Matt Damon, Jude Law movie “Contagion” filming at CDC

The CDC: Ready for its close-up

The CDC: Ready for its close-up

The CDC is starring in a new film with Matt Damon, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow and Laurence Fishburne.

The movie, “Contagion,” is filming some scenes today over at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. If you work or live over that way, expect more traffic than usual, given all the crew and gear.

The movie has been allowed onto the campus of the CDC, to film some exterior shots, but isn’t shooting inside the building.

The production did a good bit of filming in Chicago before heading to Atlanta, and it’ll be here for a while. We hear that in addition to the CDC/Emory area the film will be shooting some in Decatur as well as downtown Atlanta. Based on what we’re hearing, it sounds like the downtown W hotel might be a good spot to keep your eyes peeled for a star encounter.

The movie is billed as a bio-med drama, where a team of doctors must race to find a cure for a deadly epidemic. It’s the second project here recently to feature the CDC in its plot line. The final episodes of the first season of AMC’s “The Walking Dead” set scenes in the CDC, but did not actually film there. Instead, the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre played the role of the CDC.

Unlike “The Walking Dead,” the movie “Contagion” doesn’t feature zombies – and doesn’t plan to have the CDC explode.

I work in downtown Decatur, so I am going to keep my eyes peeled. It seems over the last couple of years that something is always being filmed around here.

If we want Atlanta to continue to be an attractive place for major film productions, I’m not sure that encouraging star stalkers will help. But thanks, anyway.

So what’s going on at the old DeKalb School of the Arts location (ex-Briarcliff HS on N Druid Hills Rd). The entire parking lot is full of movie trucks, tents, trailers, etc. Is this part of the same thing?

And IF IT IS, how much money is DeKalb Schools making from renting the property? What are they doing with the money? With their history, the public needs to know it isn’t going into somebody’s slush fund?

Emory has rented parking space at the Emory Inn. It is so full that only people who walked to the restaurant could eat there today. I had lunch there and it was completely empty! I work across the street from the CDC it is kind of fascinating to see all the helicopters and all film trucks all over. It is only for one day and, hopefully, it is pumping a few $$ into the local economy, so what’s the harm?

They’ve been filming that Teen Wolf show there on and off for a few months now. I see them there all the time.

I have mixed feelings about allowing a high security facility such as the main CDC campus being used in a movie.

But at least they’re not portraying the CDC as a single building. Heck, it’s not even a single campus.

I’ll be going to Vortex later tonight to meet up with my man Sam Jackson to discuss next weekend’s live performance of ‘Rise Up’ at the Falcons game.

Why does the plot to this movie sound like and exact remake of ‘Outbreak’? Hope it’s good though and I’m glad the production credits have brought so much business to Atlanta. Keep’em coming.

We need to thank Ted Turner, Jane Fonda, Jimmy Carter, Mr. Marcus and there support of the the CDC Foundation that helped the CDC put forth the lobbying effort to congress to get the money from Senators Hatcher, Natcher and others to finally improve its facilities. There was a time when movie producers would come and never consider using CDC labs for movie sets about CDC plot lines. For example the Holly Hunter film where she played Dr. Mary Guinon, who really discovered the HIV virus killing the Gay men in San Francisco, not Dr. Curran. Those movie producers came and looked at CDC’s labs and couldn’t beleive how awful they were. They built a better movie set in Hollywood.

Only Ted Turner and Jane Fonda had the time of day to come to the CDC 50th Anniversery Party. Both Ted and Jane were gracious and real people that of all the Celebs invited they came and mingled with the real workers of the CDC.

I worked the movie this morning as a “protester”……..we had lots of fun yelling at Laurence Fishburne as drove by us in one of the scenes. We were at the main entrance…….lots of news helicopters and staff checking us out. Maybe I’ll see my self on the news tonight!

I saw the scene at the CDC and also drove by the former alternative school on N. Druid Hills where there were ALOT of trailers, etc. What is being filmed there? It seems I’ve seen trailers there off & on for a couple of months now.

I sat in traffic for two hours because of this movie. Why can’t they shoot movies on Saturdays? Atlanta rush hour is already bad enough.

I work at CDC and was able to watch some of the filming. It was awesome watching Lawrence Fishburne and the other cast members film the movie. If you see a lady waving in the window from the CDC building that’s ME!

I, work at the CDC and noticed on Wednesday that they were setting up for something but I just didnt know WHAT at the time. Now, I know! They gave us no warning in advance. Well, one of my co-workers said they sent an email but that was after I had left for the day. I must admit, the entire atmosphere was very exciting to me. To know, that I was “so close” to some of today’s major movie actors blew me away. I am so like a entertainment groupie..LOL.. Unfortunately, much like the rest of the gawkers, we are not allowed to come close to the actors or even take pictures but we can spectate as long as we are within a reasonable distance away. It actually made the environment around us EXCITING in an otherwise drab and boring place. j/k..For those who were stuck in traffic due to this major inconvenience, I so sympathize with you. But events like this don’t happen often so please maybe just take it in stride.

Filming today just south of East Atlanta village. The cop told me they needed a street with lots of boarded up houses. No joke.

You’ve only had ONE day of traffic problems due to filming??? Lucky you!! I live in L.A. This is a regular occurrence here. Even when we’re NOT being blocked by filming schedules, our traffic here is HELLACIOUS. Our freeways suck every day, not just for film shoots, including weekends. Just be grateful it’s a once in a lifetime thing where you live & not your everyday routine traffic blockup. I would think most people would be sort of intrigued by the whole thing, seeing as how it’s not often you’ve got movie productions in Atlanta; I’m sure one day of this isn’t going to permanently scar anyone.

So a movie can tie up rush hour traffic. Whose bright idea was that? I hope you know that many employees at the hospitals located on Clifton are penalized if they are late to work.

I met Laurence Fishburne at a Duluth establishment Friday night. He was extremely cordial and nice to everyone who approached to speak to him. My most memorable role of his will forever be Capt. Hannibal Lee in “The Tuskegee Airmen”.
