Matt Ryan clowns around with some of the kids attending the Topps Old Spice Matt Ryan Football Clinic at Centennial High School in Roswell over the summer. PHIL SKINNER /pskinner@ajc.com.
Aww. Here’s some happy news on the first day of work after Thanksgiving: Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan is engaged.
From a short ESPN piece announcing the item:
“Ryan said he and former Boston College basketball player Sarah Marshall, who have been dating for about seven years, are engaged. Ryan said he and Marshall will marry sometime in the offseason.”
ESPN credited WXIA for the initial report.
We have interviewed Ryan a couple of times, not about sports but about his philanthropic endeavors around town. Here’s a recent piece on his charity putt putt night with fellow Falcon Coy Wire.

As requested here is a photo of the happy couple. We found this one on http://www.sportsnipe.com.
The event benefited Make A Wish.
“Make-a-Wish is unique,” said Ryan. He told us during that interview that he has gotten to meet some of the kids for whom meeting him and seeing a Falcons game is a final wish when facing a terminal illness. “It’s an emotional experience. It’s bittersweet.”
Such a nice guy. Best wishes to him and his bride-to-be.

Great to have a young man like this leading our city’s team. The Falcons got this one right, and we have three consecutive winning seasons to show for it. Congrats to Matt on his engagement and for doing so much good for Atlanta.

Wow… a pro athlete actually getting ENGAGED to a woman before having a houseful of illegitimate kids with her… what a concept!
Ryan is a great gentleman and a great example to all people, not just kids… i think that about 90 percent of our nation’s thug athletes could learn a thing or two about decency from Matty Ice (people like LeBron, the early-years Michael Vick, Kroy Bierman, Tony Parker, Barry Bonds, Chris Rainey, Ben Roethlisberger, etc.) Matt obviously knows how to treat people, especially women, with some courtesy and decency.
Ladies: don’t give up the goods before a man commits to you. And guys, have some respect for a woman and MARRY HER if you love her, and CERTAINLY if you’ve knocked her up!
Good luck, Matty Ice… you are a class individual. May you and Sarah have a wonderful life together.

Hoping for the best. Expecting the worst.
Its a better idea to wait until your career is over. Find a wife when you are in your mid 30s and retired. You can marry a girl in her mid 20s, have her sign the appropriate paperwork and start a family with plenty of time and money to spare.
Right now, its better to focus on career and meaningless relationships with the opposite sex.

Funny, all the people on here with their high morals…I’m sure each and every one of you all have your own shortcomings. You only know about their shortcomings because athletes(thugs..lol) are in the spotlight. In the day and in age when none of you all have your own life and like to get on blogs and demean other people, the bottom line is get a life and keep it moving. Congrats to Matty and his engagement! You can’t have an article about anything dealing with the Falcons without bringing up Michael Vick. People act like they live with Matt Ryan or something! You only know what you see on t.v. and have no idea what goes on when the cameras aren’t around. Give it time. Let him have a losing season and you will have plenty of negative things to say about him too……Atlanta never fails at kicking a person when he or she is down, but the minute things are going well, it’s all good. Whatever!

First, Congrats to Matt Ryan, however Matt Ryan is not the first or last sports figure that will get engaged without having a child first and how do you know his bride-to-be is not expecting a baby now? Stop judging people….that does not make you have class because you chose to get married prior to having a baby. I know several people got married and had children later and now….Tiger Woods????Chipper Jones both got married before the children. Class has NOTHING to do with it.

Just because you marry someone you knew before you made it doesn’y mean anything except you will probably be cheated on/divorced faster because the man already knows you too well, there isn’t a challenge anymore. Not that it’s a good/bad thing to marry your high school/college sweetheart but in most cases those are the ones who get it the worse because men/women feel that you will never do better than them. i witnessed my parents who were highschool sweethearts that everyone adored, my father who is successful in the chemical industry made sure my mother never had to work, they owned multiple homes, cars, and even businesses together. But in the end he wanted more and went out and got it if you know what I mean. My mother was there before the BIGG money, even though they are best friends now and love me to death. To make a long story short, they always taught me that it doesn’t matter whether the person was there before or after you became the person you are today, it’s about the person you become while you are with them…..#imo

“@ Mel – we’d have a lot LESS problems in this world if men did what Jeff @11:13am said. Imagine a world where men were faithful to their wives, were good fathers to their kids, and actually had virtues and values”
Look, no man is perfect and Matt Ryan I’m sure is no exception. But it’s nice to hear of a story where the athlete is getting good publicity like this, when it comes to his personal life, instead of the negative publicity that seems to surround so many sports “stars” nowadays. Seems like so many sports stars are great athletes but not very good “men”. It’d be nice if ALL MEN – athletes, and the rest of us, me included – worked as hard off the field in our personal lives as we do ON the field in our chosen professions.
You think football is hard work? Try being a committed, married man in this day and age. That will make picking apart the Bucs’ defense seem like a walk in the park.

To those of you stating the use of the word Thug is a derogatory term used for African Americans .. stop being racists. As you can see above, Curt mentioned Ben Roethlisberger as a thug also.
Why is it that some people have to look at many subjects as black and white?
Sounds like the people who actually think this is just a term used to describe African Americans are actually the ones with the racial issues, not the other way around.

Sorry Reality Check, but your experience doens’t mean it’s like that for everyone. There are plenty of married couples out there that have not cheated. It may be considered the status quo in some circles but not in all.
Sadly, it’s views like this that make people think cheating is ok. Point blank, when you cheat you are likely hurting one of the people on this planet you care for deeply. If you can’t even control yourself in that situation then why should anyone, on any level, ever trust you? It’s one thing to hurt someone accidentally or by a split second decision that you made a mistake, but cheating is not that. It’s actually very easy to avoid cheating if you want to, and if you just practice a little self control.
The problem with todays culture is that too many people just think ‘everyone else does it so I can as well’. Well, there are probably a huge number of people on this blog alone that will tell you that everyone else DOESN’T do it.

Matt Ryan is the true all American boy – nothing wrong with that folks. Thank God he is our all American boy! Best wishes for many happy years for he and Sarah. After reading about these two and appreciating Little Big Man Doug Flutie – I’m going to send all of my kids to Boston College (if they can get in). They are doing something right up there in Chestnut Hill.
