We were up bright and early for a pre-dawn interview with Falcons players Matt Ryan and Coy Wire. The guys are hosting the Celebrity Putt Putt Extravaganza next week to benefit the Make-a-Wish Foundation. The event will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 5 at Malibu Grand Prix, 5400 Brook Hollow Parkway in Norcross. Tickets are $75 for adults and $50 for children 16 and younger.
Joining Ryan and Wire will be Harry Douglas, Kroy Biermann, Brian Finneran, Tony Gonzales, Roddy White, Erik Coleman, Brent Grimes, Sean Weatherspoon, Curtis Lofton, John Parker Wilson, Todd McClure, Jerious Norwood, Chris Redman, Stephen Nicholas, Mike Peterson and Thomas Decoud.
The evening will feature refreshments, games, player meet-and-greet, go-kart rides and miniature golf, of course.
“I’m not a good golfer, but I’m an excellent Putt-Putter,” Ryan said.
This summer, Ryan and Wire held a similar event in Pennsylvania, as a sort of miniature golf training camp. They got so into it that Ryan bet a fan who attended that he could not sink a putt, putting his jersey and cap on the line. When the fan managed to circumvent the giant clown windmill obstacle for the hole-in-one, Ryan lived up to his pledge.
“I looked over and Matt’s taking off his jersey and hat,” Wire chuckled.
“We get uber-competitive,” Ryan added.
While the event is fun, it supports a serious cause.
“Make-a-Wish is unique,” said Ryan, who has gotten to meet some of the kids for whom meeting him and seeing a Falcons game is a final wish when facing a terminal illness. “It’s an emotional experience. It’s bittersweet.”
