Argh!
Atlanta is the crankiest city in the nation.
That’s according to a new poll conducted by Sperling’s BestPlaces and was based on a measurement of 11 irritation factors, including pest control, traffic congestion, and heat index, among others.
(We just walked across the street for lunch and can attest that the heat index is indeed pretty irritating today.)
The survey was commissioned by Edge Shave Zone, who has signed on comedian John Caparulo to help get the word out. Because of his, ahem, sharp wit. Heh.
Here’s the whole list.

No way. Just another “list” developed by someone in the Northeast. New York City not being on the list makes it a dead give-away. Here is my list – just as accurate: (1) New York, (2) Boston, (3) Philly, (4) Washington DC, (5) Chicago, (6) Cleveland, (7) Pittsburgh, (8) Minneapolis, (9) Hartford, (10) San Francisco. My list is based on a cold index, rat problems, rude people, dirty cities, sucky college sports programs, muggings and other crime, and being expensive.
Oh, and Scott, hit the road, buddy. I would be happy to be helpful by giving you directions and might even drive you to the airport and carry your luggage for you, because I am so nice.

Been living in Atl for over 30 years. Things are changing for the worst. Piedmont Park isn’t even safe anymore. The students at Tech can’t be out past 10p. Intown living is flat out scary with the amount of break ins and muggings. Thugs have taken over this town. You’re almost forced to move to the north part of town. Truly said. Atl is the Detroit of the south. Where are these thugs parents?

sorry been here close to 12 yrs and i have to agree Atlanta is a very cranky city for the most part… and i bet traffic is a major cause of it… its easy to blame the yankee’s of course…. but perhaps every once in a while we should nod and say hello to a stranger… crack a smile now and again… be courteous instead of rush rush rush….
i will give you an example, the other week a SUV was driving very fast in our gated comman area driveway, the grand kids were playing and very nicely as they passed us we said would you please slow down.. the very nice lady in the back seat shot us the bird and they kept on driving….

I’m gonna have to concur that Atlanta is no Detroit. Nowhere near the level of desolation.
That said, Katrina did wash up some criminal New Orleans feces, I mean thugs, on our doorstep.
I’m so cranky I sit in East Atlanta with a Benelli, watching Gran Torino over and over.
I love Atlanta!

I am so disappointed in everything right dealing with Atlanta. @ Scott I don’t blame you, move on and find happiness, peace and joy. To all you others attacking him… you are proving the point of this being a cranky city… So Crank on… I will continue to be a true ATLien and get my city back to where it needs to be….

Show me a foreigner in Atlanta that refuses to learn the English language and can’t speak an English word that isn’t always loud, boisterous, irritated, rude, unreasonable and unruly and I’ll show you emerald ocean water in Arkansas. They most likely interviewed these uninvited guest who reside in Atlanta.
Remove them (until they speak English) and the irritation factor goes down considerably if not off the chart.

Go live up in the north when there’s 2 feet of snow on the crowd and you go 37 days in a row with the temperature never getting above freezing and then tell me about irritation levels. Atlanta has zero irritation level compared to shovel snow out of your driveway so you can go to the grocery store when it is -3 degrees and the wind chill is -27.

Atlanta’s biggest downfall is the fact that it is an unplanned city run by idiotic bureaucrats who carry on the legacy of entitlement.
Other than that and traffic, and the extreme heat, there is little to complain about. I’ve grew up in the midwest and as others have mentioned, dealing with extreme heat and smog is much better than extreme cold and snow.

It is just a poll everyone. Don’t get your panties all in a wad. Love it or hate it. Check out their website for other polls that this topic came from. It shows Atlanta being as one of the best places to live and other positive subjects. After reading these comments I can understand why Atlanta was voted the crankies city. Boy, you people need to lighten up, check your blood pressure you’re about to blow a gasket…LOL
Complaining about the humidity, its the SOUTH, what did you expect? There’s nothing you can do about the humidity, its nature. And then you complain about the traffic, the traffic has been bad here for over twenty years, you knew that before you moved here. And then you complain about crime and blame it on Katrina victims, that’s not true every nut job in the news is a GRADY BABY.
If you spent less time complaining and more time embracing the positive then you wouldn’t be so cranky. If you want a good chuckle, just think of some of the wierd landmarks here in the metro area, THE BIG CHICKEN, I ROFL everytime its mentioned. Oh, by the way I’m not a native but I love Atlanta, I just had the sense live in a town called Between, thats between Athens and Atlanta.

The gay-bashing obsession and the endless Bible thumping are sickening as well. Here is a hint – why the hey don’t you Southern states secede? I am sure the rest of the nation will object mightily! Good perspective, Jennifer. Here are MY reason for ATL’s crankiness:
1. Selfish/obnoxious drivers
2. Smog from May-September
3. Really poor street signage
4. Uncontrolled growth
5. A city too busy to be friendly anymore

My wife and I just moved to ATL from Nebraska and can attest to the city’s cranky attitude. Nebraska’s unemployment rate hit a high of five percent last year, and foreclosures are rare as they used to be everywhere. No short sales. But when we Midwesterners move here to alter the attitude for the better, perhaps ATL’s first place will fall!

I lived in the ATL area for 8 long years and found it just wasn’t for me. I tried but just couldn’t fall in love with ATL as I felt the city didn’t have the heart, soul and engery that a great city offers. Very unsafe, I never heard a gun shot until I moved to ATL and then I heard a lot. Big minority problem that will continue to drain the city. I read the AJC every once in a while to smile and be glad I’m gone. If you haven’t lived outside of the ATL area or the South, you really have nothing to compare it to like some of us do. I would take zero degrees and tons of snow over gangs, home invasions and tons of murders. ATL might have been nice at one point but it sure is the ghetto now.

Hey Scott, I moved one year ago and haven’t regretted a day. By the look at the latest merto area unemployment numbers, I suggest plenty more people better start doing the same thing! I lived in Atlanta 22 years had had been coming to the city since 1969. At one time it was a nice city , but now I wouldn’t tell a soul to move there. The city is way over hyped, congested, no trees or green space with way too many blighted strip malls. To be blunt, Atlanta best days are behind it. All I have to do is sell my downtown condo because I’m sure as hell not coming back. And for those near-do-wells who keep defending this city, please, stop trying to con people, it is what it is folks!!

Since there are some dark age drones on here labeling people as “Yankees,” I will go ahead and admit that I am indeed a carpetbagger. ATL is probably not much “crankier” than most major cities. It is hot, smog ridden and overly busy, as are most major cities. Still, it beats snow and months of below freezing weather up north! Regardless, here is my frustration with the city:
1. Lanes that merge on top of one another with little warning
2. Awful lack of street signs
3. Tons of useless bureaucrats working in businesses (utilities, cable, services, etc.) and government
4. Bums everywhere
5. Police and other city workers who spend more time texting than working
6. The most backward public education system I have ever witnessed
7. Ebonics that non-black folks cannot possibly comprehend
8. Lackadaisical attitude of workers in various customer service areas

I was born in the South, lived all over the world for 20 years with the military and moved to Atlanta for a job 3 years ago. What I’ve found is that Southern hospitality is gone. It’s not a north/south thing because,* Newsflash*, the civil war is over! It’s a selfish, I’m better than my neighbor attitude that is rampant here. I’ve never seen so many unfriendly people – try merging in traffic. I’m sure the pickup truck with the rebel flag sticker who won’t let me over is not a transplanted Yankee. Stop blaming others Atlanta residents – the unwelcoming attitude is the new norm here. Now if only the economy will improve so I can sell my d*mn house I’ll be glad to leave you all here to point fingers at the yankees who’ve ruined your town.

Atlanta has a lot of issues for sure. Mostly minority populations that have issues with white people. Reverse racism is rampant and nobody wants to talk about it. A political blindness if you will. It’s driving crime and poverty and apathy. Blame the white male. That’s getting nowhere. Time to wake up to reality. You wanted the city, you got the city, now you hate your city. Atlanta sucks and has for the past 40 years and that’s why I live outside that cesspool.

Also, to the “not racist” child who wrote about the “minority run” Atlanta government… you obviously were not here in the white 70’s to watch out illustrious Fulton County commission !! and other than the mayor this was a worse run City than it is now !! Remember the old Water Dept or getting a car tag ??/ or rat control downtown ??? It was all a joke !!

Beautiful Words from James Howard Kunstler:
“Behind the incoherent cargo of conflicting complaints that makes up Tea Party doctrine — like “keeping the government’s hands off our medicare!” — stands the more basic dissolution of the Sunbelt’s miracle economy, along with the pain and bewilderment of the southern peckerwood political nexus that rose out of the dust after World War Two to build the suburban nirvana of universal air-conditioning, happy motoring, Jesus tub-thumping, over-eating, and Friday night football that defined Sunbelt culture. They sense now that history is about to thrust them back into the okra patch, with the hookworms and the chiggers, as the economy whirls down the drain, and the car dealerships close up, and the idle production homebuilders succumb to methedrine addiction, and the price of Reba McEntire tickets exceeds their dwindling resources, and they are none too happy about any of that.
Of course this Sunbelt political culture has tentacles and outposts all over the USA, wherever a few generations of laboring folk enjoyed debt-fueled parabolic rises in living standards during the cheap oil decades, and now find themselves in foreclosure hell, indentured to the very WalMarts that they welcomed with open arms (and allowed to destroy their local businesses) — and, of course, it’s yet another paradox that these are the same folk who will still defend the big box masters to their deaths. The America they stand for is a weird contradictory mish-mash of Confederate nostalgia, hyper-individualism that really owes allegiance to nothing, racial enmity, religious paranoia, and potemkin patriotism — especially involving anything in the constitution that allows them to wriggle out of obligations to the public interest at the same time that they get to push other groups of people around.”

Don’t let a daily dose served morning, noon and night of blacks behaving badly by 5,2, and 11 plant a perception of a city that is just awful. Like all major American cities Atlanta has its share of angst inducing characteristics. Overall Atlanta is a beautiful city. From afar you notice gleaming towers piercing an emerald canvas from downtown to midtown to Buckhead to Sandy Springs and the perimeter/Dunwoody area. Tons of restaurants, not just national chains, shopping, all major league sports teams, major corporations, the world busiest airport that continues to grow, the most ambitious city development (the beltline) in the nation, neighborhood festivals, more black business owners per capita than any other city in the nation. No Atlanta isn’t perfect. No place is. Perfection is unobtainable. We can only improve things but never perfect them. Get away from the keyboard and get out there. Remember, you can’t expect to find your living room everywhere you go.

If the Devil created an anti-city, a place where people would feel least human, Atlanta would surely be that place — despite the prayerful babble of tongues emanating from the evangelical roller rinks at every freeway off-ramp. One might think: Los Angeles, but that city at least came up with the amenity of valet parking, mostly lacking in Atlanta, where the suffocating heat slows the journey of blood from heart to brain.
My homeys, the New Urbanists, held their annual meeting at the “downtown” Hilton there this past week — a most mysterious selection, perhaps due to an x-treme discount on room rates in a time of austerity.

Why should people who weren’t born here leave? Why can’t all of the racist, conservative morons who think they have more right to be in an American city than I do leave? *Newsflash* Ga has been trying hard and succeeding in attracting companies to move here. THAT is why people came in the last three decades. Native atlantans are a disingenuous mutant breed of swamper whom I do not consider to be actually ’southern’, REAL southerners are graciousness, honest and hospitable – and that is not what you are. Boots are you retarded.. People on here gives the south a bad name. I was born and raised in the south and the list is no surprise. By the way New york City was on the list. Atlanta is a dirty city and overbuilt. It sauys alot by the vacancy rate. It also shows when stores open and stay only for a few months. Be for real and Boots your list makes no sense because I have been to Chicago and a few more of those cities and Chicago is not a dirty city. If you want to do murders based on population then Atlanta should be there..I don’t know why some try to make this city seem great when its not..ATlanta will never be important because its not a port city and will lack the activities that coastal cities offer. The traffic and crime is why so many are irritated.. Stop messing with Scott he stated his opinion like the rest of you. Many of you probably never left the area yourselfs and if it keeps snowing here then what will be the difference from Atlanta and the rest of the North..You all live in the same country and people up north I do give thenm this that they are open-minded and in the south that is really hard to come by..lmao

Funny article with a lot of truth to it– just look at all the cranky comments posted by these crank Atlantans. And to all your cranky bigots on this post, the foreigners are actually the nicer people in this city. New York has crime, but it is also the safest city in this country right now, thanks to the common sense of its administration who puts safety first, and spends the monies necessary to ensure that police officers and fire fighters are well paid. I blame all thise cranky Bible thumping Baptists who are blocking any 21st century progress in the city’s archaic laws and regulations.

Have any of you noticed…, the people who say’s that they moved from Atlanta and are much happier as a result ot the move, never say where they moved to? Why is that? Don’t they like to rep their new homes, or is it that they’re ashamed of their new homes, and they’re not being entirely truthful? As far as this Ga Tech thing goes, if you’re being preyed upom, it’s your own damn fault. Man up, quit acting like little bitches or sissies and act like you have some men on that campus maybe you’ll quit getting pimped on your own campus!!!

The area around Ga Tech is dangerous PERIOD. That is not a nice area, they have a campus in the midst of a ghetto. Haha there aren’t any men on the GT campus. Why would people just want to bash Atlanta for the heck of it? Why would you imply that downtown & midtown are people friendly when they anything but and dangerous to boot? Atlanta has some obstacles facing it before it can become worthy of all the hype that it generates.

The area around Ga Tech didn’t used to be that uniformly dangerous. The danger was mostly in the Southeast Campus area. I bet that is considered the “safer” area of the campus than the northside. Fortunately most of our suburbs are still considered “safe”.

Hey Goobers…do you realize not too many people, excluding myself, have responded to your philosophical dribble that you obviously cut, copied and pasted from some textbook you saved from your liberal collegiate days? If you hate the South, specifically Atlanta, so bad, you maybe need to get into your overpriced Prius and hit the road north. If you do not live in Atlanta or the South, southerners and other interested parties are extremely happy. I agree Atlanta hasn’t been a southern city since Sherman’s BBQ during the Civil War, however for some of us southerners that live south of Macon, we are not all toothless wonders roaming the woods looking for our cousins to marry. Yes, the idea of Atlanta being on the list as a cranky city may be true, but other cities can also be included. You should try Savannah sometime? All in all, Goobers quit the verbal diarrhea. If I want to hear something like that, I will watch a Roy Barnes commercial.

If you live south of Macon then you don’t really know what Atlanta is like. The city has some real infrastructure problems that need to be addressed now. People like you getting fooled into sticking up for “the south” and “southerners” and thinking that there isn’t anything wrong are just making things worse. You’re just helping rich folks from buckhead or wherever maintain high property values by shifting blame to some imaginary group of people. When mass transit, crime and accessibility issues are addressed then property values about the city will more uniform and less tightly packed in certain areas. I just don’t believe that the north vs south thing is an actual issue anymore because you just never see it on a day to day basis.

having traveled around 32 of the 50 states with major cities throughout, I can tell you that Atlanta is by far not the crankiest. Having said that, it is no where as great as the supporters believe it to be to. If you like true southern hospitality, don’t come to ATL. Many in Atlanta seem to possess this aire of superiority which I can’t really understand given it has nothing to offer in the way of diversions and attractions that can’t be experienced in a weekend. Where are the amenities that other cities of similar size possess? Why do I feel safer walking around Brooklyn than throug the Lenox mall entrance? As soon as I realized the city is full of $30,000 millionaires, I stopped caring and moved outside the Perimeter and thank God.

The natives are so fixated on class, money and status; it is like going back to junior high. What arrogant, pompous, provential douchebags.
What is with the black people here? They are the lowest of low lives and scumbags. They just make Atlanta creepy. My black friends from other cities are just embarrased and appalled by how repulsive their distant relatives are here.

My favorite thing about Atlanta is the huge number of “ministers” who refer to themselves as bishops, apostles, and doctors, even though they’ve never been to college. Seems like there’s a very large, not very bright, percentage of Atlantans who blindly send their money to these scam artists. It’s really sad, when they could be actually donating money to legitimate, worthy causes.

I agree that life is too short to spend in a city where you’re so unhappy. That’s why I’m feverishly working to get my house on the market with the next month. I am not shocked. Atlanta is going through spending and development withdrawals. Like most of the country, Atlanta is feeling the economic crunch. Maybe the city that was once to busy too hate just isn’t “busy” enough anymore. Economic stress, high temperatures, and constant traffic gridlock (due to poooor planning) is enough to make anyone stressed out and a bit cranky. I just hope that if and when the motor revs up on the economy again, Atlantans will be a bit more disciplined (economically and environmentally) with their development. The New South has lost its Southern hospitality, I suppose. What did we expect?

To all of the people who wasn’t born here, or grew up here please take my advise. If you don’t like it here, all highways leading out the city are open 24 -7. They are not nearly as congested as those coming in. Your leaving will ease the congestion on the roads and your job opening will give some worthy person a source of income.

I’m not a native but I’ve lived her for 31 years. Atlanta has changed and I’m talking about the whole Metro area when I say Atlanta. All changes have not been for the better. The traffic has gotten much worse in spite of many new roads. Crime has gotten much worse in the suburbs. And the economic collapse has hit very hard here. I think all of this has contributed to many people being irritable and cranky especially on the roads!!!!!! We plan to retire in about 6 years and we plan to move to Rabun County. I do not expect it to be perfect. But I think it will be a less irritating place to live.

@Mark I agree with you wholeheartedly. I am from the Bay and moved here because I could not afford to buy a home in California. As the old saying goes “visiting is much different from living here”. As a single Black woman with two kids, we do not live by the stereotypes that I have seen posted here. My sons are educated, have no jail records or kids out of wedlock-I have raised them better than that. My kids have been called “rich”, which we surely are not, just because I don’t allow them to share their clothes with others, (which I have never heard of until moving here) and having pride in their appearance (they don’t look like they just rolled out of bed). It’s not a matter of acting “white”, we speak proper English (@Bronco, I don’t understand alot of this Southern accent. All your words run together or it sounds like ebonics, whether the person is Black or White), have respect for others and acting ignorant in public is not an option. My sons have been accused of being “momma’s boys” because I care about their whereabouts and behavior. We have lived in numerous places, but as a mother, I am from the old-school. My parents raised me right, and I followed the tradition with my sons. My eldest is 21. He knew living off me was not an option. The only way he could live at home was by attending college and/or working until he received his degree. He chose to follow the family tradition of being third generation Air Force, and getting his degree in the process. My 16 year old wants to do the same. My children have been exposed to many cultures and environments by just living in the Bay Area, ie., the Planetarium, Golden Gate Park, Lawrence Hall of Science, Cinco De Mayo, Chinese New Year, Black History and others. Many of the kids here are content with just hanging out. Many parents here do not want to share car-pooling duties with the kids. They want you to take and pick up the kids all the time. With all the “wealthy Black people” here, why are our kids standing out on the busy streets (Camp Creek Pkwy) begging for money to either buy uniforms or go to championship games? I lived in Sandy Springs and have never seen any other minority children endangering their lives to do something constructive. I never saw this in any other city I lived in but here. There are too many people here who are trying to keep up with the Jonses and Smiths and participate in cliques. I’ve always been a independent person, so I don’t fit in with all the fake people here-especially the women. Out West and up North, if we don’t like one another, we do not pretend to do so we can know one another’s business-I could care less about you. I am not a prude, but some of these “fashionistas” need to quit. I’ve never seen more desperate-stripper looking women before in my life here. You can look sexy and cool by not exposing everything you got. I know it is hot here, but come on, where’s your self-respect? On Easter Sunday, I swear most of the women must have come straight from the club to the church, they looked that disrespectful in the Lord’s house. @Shackled by Real Estate I agree with you also. I’m tired of missing the things I love dearly like being able to walk down or cross the street without the fear of being ran over. I have been in 3 car accidents within a 2 year period here-none of them my fault. Where do these people receive their driver’s education-the bubblegum machine? The yield sign is just decoration for the sidewalk and freeway entrance. I am in the process of selling my home, so no one needs to tell me Delta is waiting. I’ve been waiting and craving to get that U-Haul truck to get out of this backwards town-never to return. If Atlanta is progressive, Lord, I’d hate to see the opposite. It’s all hype-don’t fall for it like I did.

Atlanta isn’t perfect, but no city is. That being said, NYC, Boston, Philly, or Baltimore should have topped the list. The ppl there are RUDE, buildings dirty and old (historic significance set aside), and the traffic isn’t much better- as the ppl there do NOT know how to drive- esp in NYC.
