Gucci Mane’s private post-prison party

In a photo posted on Twitter, V103's Frank Ski and Gucci Mane catch up

In a photo posted on Twitter, V103's Frank Ski and Gucci Mane catch up Wednesday night at Mane's party at the Georgian Terrace

Freshly released from jail, Gucci Mane partied with close friends last night, hosting a select group at a private dinner in the Grand Ballroom of the Georgian Terrace Hotel.

Among the folks dining on miniature beef Wellington, peekytoe crab salad, pecan crusted chicken, bananas foster and ever-flowing champagne were R&B singers/reality show stars Monica and Kandi Burruss; rappers Big Boi, Shawty Lo and Wacka Flocka Flame; producers Jazze Pha, Sean Garrett and Drumma Boy; DJs Drama and Sense; radio personalities Frank Ski and Nina Brown of V-103 and Hot-107.9’s Durtty Boyz; Atlanta City Councilman Kwanza Hall and former DeKalb CEO turned congressional candidate Vernon Jones.

Record execs from across the country, including Atlanta’s James Rhodes and Nicole Sellers and Asylum Records’ CEO Todd Moscowitz, attended as well.

“The only time you see this many Atlanta music people in one place is on the [Billboard] charts, or BET somewhere,” remarked Vawn of the Peachtree TV/BET reality show “Welcome to Dreamland.”

Mane showed up in three diamond-studded necklaces. “I feel like this is the first day of the rest of my life,” he said. “The first day of the best of my life.”

Known around the courthouse as Radric Davis, he was released shortly after midnight on Wednesday, having served six months for violating probation on an assault charge.

After his 12:30 a.m. press conference outside the Fulton County lockup on Rice Street, he said, “I just called people, thanked them for their support and just got accustomed to having my feet back on the ground. Don’t tell anybody, but I also went in the studio for a few hours, to get some things off my chest.”

And after the Georgian Terrace dinner he was headed back in the recording booth with Pha.

“Gucci said he was ready,” the producer said. “And I think we can capture some of the magic and love going on here tonight. Ooooo-weeee!”

The Truth about the "Industry"

May 13th, 2010
9:24 am

I’m going to go ahead and say it. Hip Hop as we once knew it, is dead. How can y’all not realize that everyone involved in the “Rap Industry” is actually fronting a greater agenda? Gucci Mane is a career criminal tightly involved with a popular Atlanta area gang (look it up).

White suburbanite teens listen to this crap because it pisses their parents off. Spend millions upon millions of money on their “hit singles” that are admittedly stolen loops and samples taken from popular 80’s pop hits. All of this money, then in turn, empowers these career criminals to lead even more corrupt lives of influence. Their “investments” include stash house operations, drug trafficking, smash and grab operations, and firearm collecting. This is not unlike the black market firearm and drug sales that ultimately fund terrorist organizations overseas.

The intended audience (black youth) looks to these men as role models and is softened to a world of violence and corruption. Some (obviously not all) actually look up to these individuals and begin their life of crime at an early age. You can even argue that this “music” is a recruitment cry, vying for bragging rights on who is in the hottest gang this year. In my opinion, the black youth is the ultimate victim to these “musicians”.

The AJC reports a heroes welcome because of the star-studded attendance. Let’s face it, money buys you power, and power buys company. Shame on these individuals that are shamelessly associating with Gucci Mane simply because of his fame. I can guarantee that half of those in attendance actually have nothing in common with Gucci other than a love for his music. I’d venture to say that half have never even spoken with Gucci before.

If we stop buying his music, this isn’t even an article. If hip hop is your thing, try listening to someone who actually writes or plays their own music (there are plenty of great, legit Hip Hop acts out there)…writing poetry over pre-existing loops takes absolutely no talent… especially when that poetry shows no evidence of artistry whatsoever. I can tell you all about Drive Bys, Smash and Grabs, and Drugs…the AJC reports it to us every day. Be constructive and listen to someone with an ounce of talent: ie Andre 3000 or the Roots.

P.S. Anyone else think that his latest two album titles are a little “tongue in cheek” considering his “serious” circumstances.

im awaiting the return of East Point’s native sons… OutKast.. now there is some real genre-busting southern music right there.. in regards to Mr. Mane, he has made claims that he is drug free and is changing his life around and wanted to celebrate his release with industry peers.. i see no problem with this issue.. a lot of people seem to overanalyzing and ill simplify for you: guy gets out of jail, has dinner with friends and industry peers, goes home. The real problem for most of you here is that the AJC publicized this non-event.

LOL@1gadawg! Seriously though, Gucci Mane, what talent does he really have? Can he play an instrument? Last time I watched a live hip hop show on youtube it was absolutely horrible!!!! If people pay to see these rap “artists” if thats what you want to call them, then they are clearly wasting their good hard earned money. The studios edit the music so much it might as well be “Granny With A Hairy Butt” poster a few posts back LOL!!!

I agree with ‘RufflingFeathers’ and ‘Pathetic’. Why is this even a news worthy story to be placed on ajc.com. This guy just gets out of jail, for assault or whatever, and people are rushing out to give him praise as if what he was doing before he went in was positive. This is a rapper probably without a high school degree. We as black people like to be seen and want others to feel like we are worthy to align ourselves with whatever positve or negative to be recognized. Take a stand and stop following this connery. (ie. rappers). And AJC this is not news. Stop the pandering!!

I could not agree with your post more. I’ve been teaching HS English for 15 years, the first 13 were in Dekalb but the last 2 have been in a small school system that is predominantly white. I will tell you this, ignorance knows no color. There are just as many ignorant, disrespectful out of tune whites as there are blacks. That being said, we as black people need to do better. Stop making excuses for your 16 year old son/daughter that is still in middle school. Our kids don’t value education, we think the only way we can legally make money is in Sports or Entertainment. V-103 and Hot whatever are parts of the problems, they play that garbage and celebrate these nuts and then have the nerve to say that they care about education, what a joke. Parents you need to reallize that school is not a babysitting service and stop letting society raise your kids or your son or daugther might just be the next Gucci or Brat!!!!

Pathetice and Feathers hit the nail on the head, unfortunately….I’m black AND I enjoy Gucci’s music but that doesn’t mean I can’t be honest and admit we as black ppl are heading in the wrong direction. Before I even read the posts I said to husband, “Why is OUR race glorifying the negative”?. It SHOULD NOT be cool to be a criminal(THUG), drug dealer, ex-con, etc. Why are we hurting ourselves? We should be more successful & have more successful ppl than we currently have. We now have the opportunity to make life better for ourselves but we’re not doing that.We as black ppl have so much potential and what are we doing with it, nothing or not enough. It’s INSANE how we are hurting ourselves! Why don’t we see this and why aren’t we stopping it!? Rappers don’t care who they hurt, it’s all about themselves but what about Black Parents? Why aren’t other black parens raising their kids right, what’s the excuse? True, some kids, no matter what u do, will remain a “bad apple”, but what about the rest? This whole situation is so frustrating.

ITS THE BOULE

May 13th, 2010
10:31 am

This is the cycle that we see in the rap industry in Atlanta and around the country, the Black elite AKA “THE BOULE” has control of Mane now…and have been grooming him for his return. Remember Mane fired his entire staff weeks before being released from Jail. Now he has new people around him, he does not know what he is getting himself into. But to be honest with you, he probably does. These people have the power to distribute his new album which was suppose to be released prior to him going to Jail, but is now slated for release towards the end of summer. As with T.I., MANE is going to be overly publicized in anticipation of his album release. V103 is going to be his spring-board for air-play and the other urban station will follow. Remember this, no artist can move music at the top level of this rap game without the heavy backers “THE BOULE”, he is really being CONTROLLED NOW!!!!! They “THE BOULE” will tell him what to do, when to do it and how to do it.

Keep your third eye open, especially on the videos because the video never reflect the words in the music. These are the same people that control T.I., Jay Z, Lil Wayne just to name a few. Now that he is in, and is prevy to the PLAN, HELL has a place especially for people like him.

ALWAYS USE YOUR THIRD EYE TO DISCERN!!!!!

Everyone makes mistake, but it seems like a damn rite of passage for young black men to go to prison and celebrate getting out. The young people can’t handle the glorification of these rappers lifestyle. Everything from the weed, champagne, cars, clothes and chains. The youth of today fail to realize that the average person must obtain an education ,job and basic neccessities through hard work. At some point we have to stop blaming the WHITE MAN for all of our problems and accept responsibilty. The traps have been around for hundreds of years and we still fall into them on a daily basis. Wake up BLACK Man and realize hard work brings success. Fast money brings Prison time.

Straight up, you are a part of the mis-educated masses that soak up this warped value system that is given to you by a larger establishment who has no interest other than keeping themselves rich and YOU broke, misguided, and disposing of YOURSELF so that THEY don’t have to get THEIR hands dirty with it once they have bled you dry.

Just because someone brings to light something doesn’t mean they are “hating”. That is such a “ghettoized” perspective that I have never accepted or understood (and I was RAISED in the so-called “ghetto”).

Furthermore Info..I will let you in on a little secret.. You see all that “bling” around Gucci’s neck that this article is glorifying (which I STILL have yet to figure out why that particular detail was so important)???? I invest in the BUILLION used to “craft” that garbage!! Now…get YOUR “weight” up.

Maybe one day, people like you and Gucci Mane will wake up and realize that your senseless over-consumption and flaunting on wax and otherwise just to prove your success means nothing. After all, that success is only admired by those who are themselves empty.

RufflingFeathers:

Speak that truth. Repeatedly, boldly and loudly. I am so sick of this ignorance that is perpetuated in our community and disguised as progress. And people are actually buying into this plantation “entertainment” industry.

I quit listening to V-103 over 6 years ago. I quit listening to this “crap rap” around the same time. Real, meaningful hip hop is out there, but it’s this mess that’s promoted. Positive stories of reclamation, redemption and rebirth are out there, but it’s this mess that gets the front page.

What a lot of folks don’t understand is that being critical of the Gucci Mane’s of the world is not racism, but often real concern for the future of mainstream African Americans. One commenter referred to “escaping from the hellhole”. Let’s be realistic. This guy escaped a long time ago; he is rich and privileged; he initially got in trouble with the law because he’s a violent thug. He got in trouble this time because he ignored the law. Show us where we should have any respect for this moron or why he should get any coverage, even in the Buzz.

Unfortunately, the best outcome would be for him to say the wrong thing at the wrong southside club at 3:00 am and end up shot in the parking lot, i.e. the real outcome of such behaviors. Instead, we will keep swooning over the Michael Vicks, Gucci Mane’s, and TI’s of the world, all glorified universally because they ignored “whitey’s” laws and then bought respect by lavish parties and big contributions. Where’s the racism?

I totally agree with RufflingFeathers. Unfortunately, the people who disagree are the ones who still operate with a slave mentality.

As a concerned parent, I don’t allow my children to listen to Gucci Mane or any other so-called rapper like him because the lyrics are garbage. Parents have to take control of their children and what they are allowed to view and hear. The majority of rappers are all talking about the same things – money, alcohol, drugs, women(spoken of in derogatory names), jewelry, and cars. It seems like people should get tired of hearing the same old tired lyrics (just from different people). Not sure how or why people could like music that glorifies crime and disrespect to women.

If this Gucci Mane was really interested in changing his life for the better, there would be no fanfare, announcements or celebrations, all he would have to do is make the changes in his life and others would see it for themselves. No need to make a big announcement like he’s doing something extraordinary. Saying something and doing something are two different things.

Ok people….so would it have been better that everybody ignored Gucci Mane. Yes he committed a crime, yes he had to serve time, and yes he is a celebrity of sorts. He was given a celebration by the people in his circle and you were not invited, if you had you’d been there too,(lol). And if it had been you in his shoes then you would be loving it and glad to know that you have people who still believe in you. Remember we are all just one step away from a bad decision that will send us to jail/prison. Would it have made you all feel any better if the news was “Gucci Mane just released from prison and now he is homeless, jobless and in need of a support system. He is fortunate to be part of an elite group…whether it’s right or wrong, it is what it is. If he came out of prison having to struggle like most people then you all would be saying “that’s a shame”. So he’s damned if he do and damned if he don’t. As parents we should be teaching our children right from wrong. I don’t veiw Gucci Mane as a role model. He is a rapper……and that’s it.

As the other people have explained on previous posts… why do some use these blogs to perpetuate the idea that they are living better than others? Look regardless of how you all yourselves, we all have something we are not proud of. The ajc posted this article b/c of the invitees and the fact that Gucci is relevant in most age groups under 30. My reading of the comments thus far have easily shown the line of the “generational” gap. Forget what the man has done, we all must be taken for what we say and Gucci has explained he’s trying to live his life different. Most ppl like him, grow up in circumstances that make jail the “rite of passage” as someone put it. If the man is turning over a new leaf, can he hang himself? Or will you do it because someone made you the judge and jury??? If we cannot praise and pray for those individuals we don’t agree with, how can we act as if we are any better? If we are, we wouldn’t be using time while we are at work to attack the “work” of someone else.

The councilman/congression candidate are counting on Gucci Manes vote and the others he brings to the table. Think about it logically; Gucci influences the minority of black men who councilmen and congress candidates cannot speak to. How many people do you think are Gucci’s age selling drugs and don’t vote? Thats at least a few hundred maybe even a thousand. Gucci Mane has become that anti- hero which councilmen see. Also Gucci and his team of “dope boys” probably invest money into their campaigns. They are not going to turn down funding/votes from what they see to be a cash cow. Survival of the fittest unfortunately

@Chillin says:

“My reading of the comments thus far have easily shown the line of the “generational” gap.”

No, Chillin’. Your reading of the comments thus far more accurately has revealed the “intellectual gap”.

There really have been only a handful of people on this entire thread who recognized the crux of the REAL issue, which is:

The media’s and media companies’ (like AJC, V-103, and the Asylum Records) are directly complicit in perpetuating the images and values that are very obviously DESTROYING the Black community. Furthermore, they play various roles in doing so.

Truth be told, AJC is notorious for this type of “news”. There is not even enough space on AJC’s server to hold all the information I could put forth. I will tell you this..I bet the writer of this so-called “story” is losing no sleep over putting such garbage out here. She’s just doing her “part” after all. It doesn’t impact her community so who cares?

Like I said, I am an industry “insider”. I am a MUSIC guy, which includes hip-hop. I know how the game is played. I am however not “for sale” and have no problem exposing truth regardless of how ugly it is. So don’t get it confused that people are out of touch somehow.

You know….this whole thing goes to SHOW you just how badly Black people have been broken down over the generations. I am done with this thread for the day. But this is the battle we fight…
