Tyler Perry’s next project involves all-star cast

tyler-perry-fcgTyler Perry has assembled an all-star cast for the production of “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf” that he is set to direct, Clutch magazine reports.

The cast will include Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Whoopi Goldberg, Phylicia Rashad, Jurnee Smollett, Kimberly Elise, Kerry Washington and Macy Gray, the mag says.

Shooting for the film inspired by Ntozake Shange’s 1975 play starts  in New York early this summer, and it should be released by early 2011.

In other Tyler Perry news, a red carpet premiere is being held next week in The Bahamas for “Why Did I Get Married Too,” which was shot there. If you happen to be vacationing at the Atlantis Resort in Nassau on March 29, you might notice the festivities.

And how about that title? Is it OK if I, as a white man refer to black girls as colored?

At least have one get killed off early in the film, I guess we owe you that! :)

Shoshana, it is obvious that you have no idea who Ntozake Shange is or what her choreopoem is about. Of course the cast is all Black because at the time that Ms. Shange wrote her award winning project, it spoke to the lives of Black women in America during 1975.

Did it speak for all Black women? Of course not. You might want to do yourself a favor and actually read it before you make such “culturally enlightened…NOT” comments.

Tyler, I wish you much success with this new ambitious behavior. You have my total support. Keep up the good work, I am very proud of you.

Even though his movies are average at best, you’ve got to admit the guy is smart. He’s definitely become the movie director for the African-American population. I wonder why he always has to use a play on words, or a misspelled word in all his movie titles. It gets a little kitchy after awhile.

Even if you don’t appreciate his movies you can’t deny he is highly intelligent!! I know alot of white people who like his movies and the reason why some don’t is simply because they don’t understand “our” humor!!! because alot of black people have a “madea” in there family. Tyler Perry is just doing his thing just like any white movie maker does and the fact that some of you can’t even get past that means you are still living in the past and you need to bring your head up out of the sand. Black or white cast, to me it doesn’t matter. Tylers movies have a teaching beyond what meets the eye. They teach morals and addreses issues many families go through. e.g. “Why did I get married?” and “Diary of a mad bleck woman” have values that can help not only married but single youngstars who intend to get married, to know that one should not get married for wealth, sex or other material things. It is an institution of give and take, selfishness should be left behind.
We appreciate you Tyler, continue reaching the families.

This seems like it’s going to be a wonderful movie yet again. However, I can’t help to wonder why he chose Janet Jackson….AGAIN? I know there are better black actresses out there has to be. In my opinion she just about killed her last character, esp. in a scene that requires some sort of emotion. MsKeepinItReal

It’s amazing how many people can sit on here and hate on someone that is working. Is it because you are not working? If you spent half as much time looking for a job or advancing your education( for those of you who can’t spell which are a lot of you posting) as you do hating on a person that is trying to show us that as a race we can all do what he is doing and not depend on someone to do it for us. Why can’t we just come together to support each other instead of bashing a person? We have to realize at some point everyone is not going to be pleased with everything a person does. That is a part of life. Grow up and get over it…Mr. Perry, as Katt Williams has always stated its a haters job to hate and if they are not hating then you are not doing your job properly…so with the comments that have been made YOU are doing your job. @Hobby, unless you get the full details of the story then you should keep your mouth closed. The media has a way of twisting stories without knowing the full extent. By him being a celebrity he is scrutinized like any of us, hated on like any of us, and yet when someone is doing positive things, people are quick to jump on the bandwagon of negativity. He is a talented black man who has gone from rags to riches and I’m quite sure he hasn’t forgotten where he came from, nor is he resentful enough to refuse to pay someone for services rendered.

General comment to the haters; his movies and plays tend to gross larger amounts at the box office (even with limited distribution) than a lot of major movie studio offerings for a few reasons. One, because they not only have some extremely talented actors in them (several Emmy, Oscar, and Golden Globe award winners); two story lines the speak to common plights in the urban community, and the daily life there; and third real life answers built on hope and faith. Themes that can uplift.
These are the same kind of plot lines found in the Major Studio’s films but are pointed to a more urban setting. “If you don’t know, now you know.”
In answer to why should we care about his Business\Studio, etc. here in Atlanta because he has more than 60 or 70 full time (direct) employees who daily activity affects a few dozen more in the area around the studio; And when they are shooting here more than an additional hundred or so part time workers get hired. The work building new sets also involves several trades: carpentry, electrical, sheet rock installers and, etc.
Why are the prices different? Consider how small the theaters here are compared to the ones in Boston, Philly or, New York.

Regardless of what you think of Tyler Perry’s movies here are the facts:

1) He KNOWS who his audience is and makes films for his target audience.

2) His seven films has grossed $390 MILLION

3) The AVERAGE revenue per film is $55.7 MILLION

4) the average OPENING WEEKEND is $25 MILLION

here’s my source: http://boxofficemojo.com/people/chart/?view=Actor&id=tylerperry.htm

The numbers speak for themselves.

Regarding “For Colored Girl’s”. He acquired the rights to do a film adaptation of Ntozake Shange’s award winning novel – which is the source of the name of the film and the cast. So, back off the racist comments…

“why did I get Married Too!” this film made the first “Why did I get married ?” look very tame, this movie really pushed the envelope in terms of emotions, it was not a very deept movie but Tyler really made it his business to push Janet Jackson to state of anger I have never seen in a woman. Overall I give it a B+.

You people are pathetic. Black and white will always be an issue. The Family That Preys (watch it). It’s a good movie. There are lots and lots of movies nowadays that have no black people or one or two just to save face. But we all watch and love them nonetheless. If you don’t like Tyler or his movies, don’t watch, ignore, and keep your negative comments to yourself. Did we not just celebrate Easter and the resurrection of Jesus? Umm, love thy neighbor…isn’t that something he said?
