When it comes to the kids, the R&B artist prefers privacy

Buzz looks forward to watching the April 4 broadcast of the Trumpet Awards, since we spent Saturday backstage waiting to interview honorees and performers and didn’t actually see the show.

But we were glad to run into folks like artist Synthia Saint James, who created the first official Kwanzaa stamp, and actress Keshia Knight Pulliam.

And then there was R&B artist Keith Sweat, now hosting a nationally syndicated radio show, The Sweat Hotel, but perhaps best known lately and locally as the ex of Lisa Wu Hartwell of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” fame.

Sweat had presented singer-songwriter-producer Frankie Beverly’s lifetime achievement award and, as you’d expect, he didn’t come close to commenting on any custody-battle drama.

Steve Harvey was honored with the Pinacle Award at Saturday night’s 18th annual Trumpet Awards, held at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center.

“It’s not a popularity contest, it’s what your community thinks of you,” Harvey said as he arrived on the red carpet.

Later, his longtime buddy Cedric the Entertainer surprised him on stage when it was time for the presentation.

Afterwards, the two cut up back stage for a few minutes.

“If I told you some of the road stories y’all wouldn’t have given me the Pinacle Award or any kind of award,” Harvey cracked, referring to their time touring with the Original Kings of Comedy tour.

Fans can rejoice that he has no plans to slow down.

“I look forward to the day when I can be rich and retire,” he said. “Our problem is we’re still buying stuff. I’m still shopping!”
