Atlanta’s Anthony L. Williams, left, debuts this week as one of the designing hopefuls on Project Runway.

Longtime local fashion industry type Kevin Knaus will certainly be watching, having played a crucial early part in Williams’ reality show career.

Knaus, along with style icon Tim Gunn and Marie Claire magazine’s Zoey Grossman, served as an advance-screening team for the show. They spent a memorable day last May in the downtown W, sifting through the creations of about 60 would-be Project Runway contestants.

“He’s got a real comic side to him,” said Knaus, right. “He made us laugh hysterically throughout the whole process. Hopefully he’ll do us proud.”

Williams and two contestants from Florida were part of the group Knaus, Gunn and Grossman saw and will now be on Project Runway.

“They were all so different,” Knaus said. “What we saw from (Williams) was some of the most stunning evening wear. He also designs his own jewelry.”

Knaus compared Williams’ pieces to Oscar de la Renta or Carolina Herrera.

“You could really see those were his inspirations,” Knaus said. “He’s very talented.”

The season premiere airs at 10 p.m. Thursday on Lifetime.
