Last night’s Season 4 “Dexter” finale apparently has blown the minds of many. The Showtime series remains a trending topic on Twitter and TV blogs are all abuzz.
The showdown between Dexter Morgan (played by Michael C. Hall) and Arthur Michell aka the Trinity Killer (John Lithgow) reached a climax (for those who have not yet seen it, we won’t spill the details − just check Twitter or Google). Most of the reaction leans toward “shocking”, “intense” and well, words we can’t print on this particular blog.
Lithgow is scheduled to do a live video chat today at 3 p.m. on ustream.com . Maybe he’ll get into the gory cliffhanging details – or maybe not.
Either way, did you see the finale? What did you think?

Talk about never seeing it coming!! I think that this twist will allow the writers to expand Dexter’s character voluminously. I also think it will allow the writers to begin introducing the darker sides of Cody and Astor (as they are in the novels).
I was on the fence for most of the season, but last night’s finale made the season a success and shows why cable is kicking network TV in the keister!!

Awesome and needless to say, I never saw that coming…. I was a little upset at the way it ended at first but then again, it was so intense and well thought out. I’m not a big TV watcher but this show is so awesome.

My jaw hit the floor and my wife and I could only stare at each other — speechless. More than just the event itself, the whole episode continued to lead the series toward a real evolution within Dexter. He had always accepted his “dark passenger” as an immutable fact but now he may begin a struggle to rid himself of it. This show never gets stale because they change the whole dynamic every season. Simply awesome!

Trinity gathered all the information he needed from that briefing room full of poster boards. The fact they called him trinity and he saw all (or most of) his kills. Since Dexter worked in the unit (homicide) he knew that Dexter was playing him the whole time…

I have never written into a forum like this, but Dexter’s finale warrants a comment….
We were absolutely blown away by the ending. I don’t think I have ever had such a reaction to a tv show – and I have watched quite a bit of tv. But, it was such a shock. We just sat on the couch in disbelief and stared at the tv. I couldn’t sleep for hours after watching, and I am going to watch again tonight to view from a different perspective. It will be interesting to pick up on Trinity’s cues, knowing now what the ending entails. Although so sad, what brilliant writing. I am still in disbelief.

@Maven – That Trinity knew that Dexter knew that Trinity knew that Dexter knew he was Trinity (sorry, couldn’t resist) was established last week. But that Trinity thought he was a simple blackmailer doesn’t jive with his calm demeanor on the cutting table, did Trinity now who Dexter was? “…so this is who you are then”
GREAT finale!

I echo the sentiments of shock, and disturbed. That ending has bothered me, almost as if it were real life, a great deal. I will say, that I thought things were going too smoothly just before the twist, and that my wife saw that coming WAY before I did. I was SO impressed, as I have been since the show started, even though it left me somewhat depressed. The upside for the show is that Dexter’s true calling will remain in tact, and be spiced up with a whole new dose of anger and emptiness. I have to mention, that the end of Californication really bothered me too, especially as a Father, knowing how all of that would impact my kids, and especially my 8 year old girl.

Blown away, and slightly depresed (almost feel like it was real life), but also VERY IMPRESSED! That is why this show is so awesome, and why, like someone else said earlier, while I am not much of a TV show person, Dexter keeps me coming back for more. Did anyone see the Californication season ender, as it was pretty depressing too, especially from a Father’s perspective. I know that Hank is a wreck, but for that to happen to him in front of his daughter just killed me, knowing what that would do to my own 8 year old girl.

@kevin But Trinity showed relief when he learned that Miami Metro was after Stan Baudry as the #1 suspect. For all he knew, Dexter could have also thought that the Trinity killer was Stan Baudry. So when he said to Dexter, “You’re trying to extort money from the Trinity killer,” was Trinity assuming that Dexter was the only one in Miami Metro at that time who knew the truth?

Have you ever ridden a roller coaster whare there are a lot of twists and turns and you maybe even get turned upside down a couple of times? The roller coaster approaches the gate and you think the ride is over so you release your grip. Then, it suddenly takes one last unexpected turn that takes your breath and turns your stomach inside out. The writers did this to me in the finale. Excellent writing and acting as usual. Julie Bentz did a great job playing her role and will be missed.

This has to be a dream sequence. I can’t believe Rita is dead.
What an unbelievable ending to the season! This is what separates Dexter from ALL other shows. There is nothing on TV like it, nor has there ever been. John Lithgow was superb. He talked about how people remember him from Third Rock, but what I have always associated him with is Ricochet and Raising Cain. He is such an outstanding and under appreciated actor. They couldn’t have picked a better Trinity.
Amazingly stunning.

Another rushed finale episode, like every past Dexter season. The writers don’t seem to have a sense of sustaining tension. There were so many slips that Dexter made, and the lapse in Trinity’s cycle (young mother murdered in bathtub, not in jump) may draw allegations that a copycat killer is on the loose. I fear Dexter’s identity will be scrutinized publicly, and by Deb. Is the show gearing down to end?

If they were going for a Shakespearean final moment, they got it but that’s where the series should have ended. They can’t go darker than that. In terms of plot, they’ll never wriggle out of this ending. And, for all the surprise, they telegraphed it all the way. We knew when the episode started that Rita was going to die. Too many give aways. I thought it was a mess and a big disappointment. Dexter is all “id” now. No conscience. Just another Jigsaw. It took away all my interest in the series. Dexter has two innocent deaths on his hands now. So much for the code. RIta’s death is all his fault. I think they blew it big time. They gave in to sensationalism and lost the whole nature of the show and the concept of dealing with the nature of evil. Now it’s just another slasher movie. As for surprises, I’m shocked that so many wanted Rita dead. I guess they want an uninhibited monster for a hero. However they choose to explain the ridiculous plot holes and absurd coincidences from the last episode, they won’t succeed. It will be laughable. Everyone around him should know by now unless they are the stupidest people in the world. How can anyone care about Dexter now that he caused her death? I’m done with Dexter. What a disappointment. Maybe that’s what they wanted. For us to see that he is just a monster with a cute shy persona.

A Shakesperean ending for sure but that should have finished the series. But not as a cliffhanger. Rita was a glimmer of hope. Now it’s all dark. Dexter is all monster. The show is no longer an examination of the nature of evil. It’s going to be slasher revenge show. What are they going to do? Let him get married again? Start dating? Hire babysiters? Give up the kids? However, they explain Rita’s death, it will be absurd. They have painted themslves in a tiny corner. On the production side, it was slapdash, rushed, poorly written and filmed. The whole traffic accident thing was weak. A mess. Tons of plot holes. Ridiculous coincidences. How can people say they were surpised? Every word out of Rita’s mouth was a goodbye. Telegraphed all the way. We all knew it five minutes in. You could see it coming a mile away. Now if they had killed Debra that would have been surprise. Since the two actors are married that’s not gonna happen. I’m also surprised at the blood lust of the audience vis a vis the blogs and the comments. They wanted Rita out of the way so Dexter could be free to kill without being “nagged.” She was the best thing in his life. The hope of redemption. And for those who think he’s free to do his “thing,” what’s he going to do take the baby along in a backpack? I’m done with Dexter. He might as well be Freddy K or Jigsaw.

It is utter B.S. that anyone can say they saw Rita’s death coming a mile away. Hindsight is 20-20, so in retrospect the signs were there (and obvious looking back) but just like Sixth Sense, there is no way you could have not felt utter shock and sadness during the last 2 minutes in this finale. Bravo for some couragious and brilliant writing. You have got to give it up to the writers for boldly putting a completely new spin on the series instead of stay with what was tried and true. I cannot wait for season five.

I loved it! I know people are saying that there was no way people thought Rita was going to die, but I had a feeling – the Showtime promos ‘biggest shocker yet’ etc – I thought either Trinity would get away or Rita would die. With the title of the episode being “The Getaway” and Rita seemingly safe in the Keys, I thought my first guess would be right. Boy, was I surprised then that my second guess was! My husband was staring at the TV with his mouth wide-open!
Great season – the best yet! Lithgow was truly amazing – I was so excited to see him in it this year, knowing his range of talent from comedy to uber-creepy bad guy. Brilliant!!

I knew something was up when Dexter came home and started looking at the photos on the wall. Seeing little Harrison sitting in blood like his father all those years before was absolutely chilling.
And then I immediately started thinking about Season 5 – how is Dexter going to explain his wife being a victim of the Trinity Killer? When will one of Arthur Miller’s family recognize “Kyle Butler”? Or will Dexter just chop up Rita, dump her in the ocean and claim she left them due to their marital difficulties – just to keep it lower profile? Do we really have to wait until next Fall?

Completely sad. I loved Rita. She was so pretty and he truly loved her. I really felt it was possible for Dexter to have a normal (well normalish) life with her. I enjoyed the series, and the finale. The 4th series is not one I will be re-watching, as I have past series. The ending is just too sad. I think that they could have picked another big twist, other than having Rita murdered by Trinity. If they wanted to get rid of Rita, they should have had her leave him, get in a car wreck etc. I do not like is that he is responsible for her death. His charachter of course has flaws, but to let his wife get murdered by Trinity? He was stupid for not killing him when he had the chance. I guess what I am saying is I liked the finale, the shock , etc, but I like for Dexter to be the Hero in the end. Trinity won, and Dex screwed up big time. I will be watching season 5. I just hope he does not start killing innocent people. The writers hopefully will not do that to us fans!

I was utterly devastated by the finale! My boyfriend and I sat in shock for what must have been ten minutes afterward, just staring slack-jawed at each other. It made me nauseous and brought tears to my eyes. Some people have said they saw it coming or even wished for it, but I definitely was not one of them.
But aside from my own emotional trauma, the show was absolutely brilliant. How tragically, darkly poetic! How heartwrenching and ironic that just as Dexter realizes how much his family means to him and we begin to see glimmers that he could possibly even put his “dark passenger” behind him, it’s taken away! The poignancy of the son bearing the sins of the father and history repeating itself! Genius!
What I found particularly painful, though, and that no one seems to have mentioned, is that we’ll never know what Trinity said to Rita in her final moments. We know from his murders throughout the season that he spoke to his victims before their deaths. Did he tell Rita the truth? Did she die knowing that Dexter is a killer? Knowing that it was really his fault that this happened to her?

Dexter is by far one of, if not thee most brilliant shows on telivision. The acting and writing is phenomenal but this last seasons finale I’m hoping is some sort of dream.Rita was too important of a character to kill off. Yeah, I thought Rita was in for it, but when I actually saw her in the tub, it was heartstopping. Dexter is the best show on tv, hands down, and I agree that Debra should get an award for this season. I, too, think her sob scene in the parking lot should have given her a preliminary award on the spot. My prediction: it will be like a Spiderman 3 theme, where Dexter turns to his dark side because of Rita’s death. It should be a tintillating battle between those two inner forces. However, how will he explain why Trinity picked Rita?? And he has no aliby. Even if it’s not questioned, Quinn will be highly suspect of Dexter even more so.

Another incredible series. The 3rd series was not quite as strong but this one was gripping throughout. Really hard to see how they can produce another top quality series with Dexter as a single parent though as a few others have commented. He has already had the problems of juggling different aspects of life -family,work,monster. But you never know another woman may appear. Hopefully he wont turn all bad.

I see so many ways this can go now after the drama of Rita’s murder is over. I think primarily Dexter’s focus will shift to raising a brood of 3 children with Harry’s code, all traumatized by the murder of their mother, and will be all be compelled by a part of them that seeks revenge on society. Great finale. Looking forward to next season!

I really loved this show. I think that must be the reason for my deep disappointment and anger over this episode. I don’t agree that the writing was “brilliant” or that the writers/producers were “courageous” for ending the show the way they did. I saw sloppy writing, with a lot of chaos and scenes that lacked detail. The whole thing felt rushed and thrown together at the last minute. Killing off Rita was a cheap stunt; her character was crucial to Dexter’s personal growth. I think this was more about Julie Benz and a some weird conflict with the producers, not a “brilliant” surprise ending. I don’t think I will be watching next season, and anyone watching the Dexter blog postings knows that I will just be one of many “former” fans.

Does anyone think that perhaps Julie Benz actually wanted to be written off the show? I had read that she went through a divorce rather recently and maybe she needed some time off? In any event, there was lots of foreshadowing here because Harry kept hinting to Dexter that Rita was getting in his way. People forget that the protagonist in this show is a killer for goodness sake. It is not a happy and tidy show. Why do people look for “personal growth” on the show in a serial killer? Just enjoy the show and move on. I can’t wait for Season 5.

Dexter is my ultimate favorite show of all time. I was totally shocked by the ending and kept saying ‘Oh no’ ‘OMG’.. This is so sad, and afterwards my husband and I thought just maybe could this be a dream of Dexters as he is on the plane going to meet Rita? How could the baby be left in a pool of blood just like Dexter was? And how did Dexter get to Trinity so soon? In his trunk? Dexters “code” wants him to try to value his family, so why kill off his wife and have him forever seeking the kill with anger? Dexter needs his family base and that includes his beautiful wife Rita. Can’t wait to see season 5.

I’ve seen plenty of fantastic season finales before, but this one was earth shattering. It caught me 100% completely off guard and left me speechless, and I am definitely not one to get that invested in television shows. Well done.

Wow! I agree John Lithgow was fabulous and in a way am sorry he is gone. However the ending was tremendous. It was straying too far from the original character of Dexter (from the books) as he became more and more emotional. Jennifer Carpenter definitely deserves an emmy this season and I can’t wait to see what they come up with next.

I haven’t watched the finale because, before reading the spoilers, I knew someone would be killed off. But I thought it would be Rita’s son. Think about it. Dexter denied Trinity his final kill by saving the 10 year old boy Trinity had chosen. Wouldn’t it have been the perfect revenge to replace that kill with Rita and Dexter’s son of about the same age? But now that I know it was Rita, I can’t wait to watch. Sorry Rita fans.

Dexter needs a woman in his life for stability and happiness and Rita was the one. How will he be able to take care of the kids and tell the kids that there mom has died, He will really have a tough job on his hands. It was really shocking and I really was upset to see her go Get her back.Dexter wont be the same without her. Otherwise it is a fantastic serial mind blowing with so many twists thumbs up completely
