Diddy and Kasim Reed, back in the day

diddy

These days, Kasim Reed is busy preparing to become Atlanta’s mayor. Years ago at Howard University, he had his hands full keeping Sean Combs out of trouble.

“In college I was known for being extra wild,” the artist, known these days as Diddy, told Buzz during a Thursday afternoon interview. “Kasim was one of the guys who said, come here. That’s the way he always was in school.”

Diddy, whose latest project, “Last Train to Paris,” will be released next year, was reminiscing from a 12th floor suite at the downtown W on stop to promote Ciroc vodka (we found a recipe online for the “Ciroc Diddy,” a cocktail made with one and a half parts Ciroc and three parts lemonade. Here’s a photo of the libation, from allrecipes.com).

179320

Thursday evening Diddy and Reed and about 15 associates retired to the private dining room at BLT Steak, enjoying short ribs and NY strip steaks.

In the days before this month’s run-off between Reed and Mary Norwood (who’s called for a recount following the very close results) Diddy repeatedly tweeted support for Reed. As tight as they are, the artist said his old college buddy never traded on their friendship.

“It was personal for me,” Diddy said. “He really knows me, but he never asked for my help.”

It is apparent by these posts that we have not learned anything from the past. Neither side wins when we divide, so try this if it helps. Every morning remember the way you felt, when you heard the news the towers had fell, remember the way you loved all Americans of all colors. Most of all rememeber how you cried and sang ” God bless America”. Look at you now, Zion what’s the matter with you now?

I predicted 6 months ago, when everyone was saying Ms. Norwood was in the lead, that she would never, ever win. A white person will never, ever, never, ever be elected mayor in Atlanta. She could have been running against Michael Vick, and Vick would have won. That’s just the plain and simple truth.

@Rich: Whatever, fool. That is why the city’s population is at an all-time high and has increased its percentage of white residents over the last decade.

Face it, the first credible white candidate in 36 years (the last was Sam Massell in 1973) and she nearly won. That says a lot right there about how Atlanta has swung back in the other direction from an “all black” city.

@black hollywood, it is clear that you are the DUMMY because you have refused (or simply unable) to address the real issue, so I will state it in a different way. As you said, America is one place, and Obama just got into office–yet the WORLD economy has gone down the drain. If white folks who, again, run the WORLD economy are so damn smart and know how to run governments so well, why all the economic turmoil. Answer that SMARTY PANTS WHITE MAN. I have an idea–maybe if YOU ran the government, everything would be ok.

@ RICH

December 4th, 2009

No, Rich, it is only the po’ whites that HAVE to leave Atlanta because they can no longer financially afford it. You live in Canton or Norcross or Lawrenceville or where ever because you simply cannot afford to be closer to the city. It takes serious cash to live Downtown, Buckhead, and places just outside Atlanta like Sandy Springs, Brookhaven, and the Perimeter Area–cash you clearly do not have. Recession got you down? And actually white folks’ numbers have increased in Atlanta, not the other way around.

SMARTY PANTS WHITE MAN? Is your daughter helping you write these replies. But i digress. It isn’t possible to succinctly address the spectrum of issues that caused the current world wide turmoil. It is beyond the scope of the comments on this blog. However, the issues aren’t long racial lines. Tina brought up the world economy as a weak retort to my statement that there isn’t a successful all black governments anywhere. That is an an issue entirely separate from the current credit crisis overhang. But answer me this: why isn’t there a single successful country in Africa? The possible examples you can provide for success will be only in comparison to the utter failures elsewhere on the continent. And don’t bring up colonialism. Why wasn’t the technology or knowledge available for Africa to conquer to Europe? Because it was tribes fighting tribes. So peep dat ya heard?

@Mo Lew……”DIDDY 4 REED 4 ATLANTA 4 CHANGE”. This is the kind of BS that got Obama elected and why you voted for Obama because Oprah loved Obama. Diddy knows nothing about politics and I could care less about his restaurant and business ventures he has in Atlanta. Talk to the CEO of Coke, maybe UPS, maybe the board of directors at Home Depot. Maybe then you can get the opinions of true business leaders in this city and they can tell you who the right fit for mayor should be.

I’ll say this, and back off. So many times, all that happens on this board is a bunch of discussion about race. Whether the conversation is about dalmatians, doctors or donuts, SOMEBODY finds a way to bring “this town is too black”, “America is run by whitey” or “black people are the problem” into the mix. Good grief!!! If race is bothering you so badly, don’t even bother to live. More so, why, oh, why did you bring your racist, can’t-live-with-anyone-but-”your kind” self to THE SOUTH?!?!? Make the most out of this life, and if something’s broken in it, it’s not all the government/White man’s/some random institution’s fault. At a certain age, WE are accountable for ourselves. With that, I’m signing off to handle my business and practice what I preach.

In the end, Kasim Reed is still mayor of Atlanta, you still live here, and this article was about two old friends having dinner together. BREATHE.

White Black or whatever Mary Norwood just did not strike me as being a very intelligent person she was almost as funny as Sarah Palin when she would debate and those eyes shifting everywhere, to me thats a person that either dosn’t know what she’s talking about OR a person that can’t be trusted. But when it is black folks screwing up one continent it is simple: Stupid black people. And by the way, whether you want me to mention it or not–white folks are partly to blame in messing up Africa, although those Africans share some of the blame for letting them come in the first place and being corrupt after they were gone. That is why the economy in places like Botswana (that’s in Africa) have done so well–they got rid of white folks. Please understand that you are not capable of winning a war of words with me because I will verbally crush you everytime because you are not bright enough or quick enough–SMARTY PANTS WHITE MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There are deadbeat politicians of every race. Stop acting like any black person elected is going to be the next ‘Bill Campbell’.

Also, stop complaining about the problems in the city without noting that repairs and services cost money that the citizens and city council were not willing to put up. Police/Firefighter salaries and sewer repairs aren’t free. You want the bills paid, put up, or shut up when the furloughs come.

December 4th, 2009
1:52 pm

Hate to say – Mike Hunt has it right – black people don’t vote on issues, they vote along racial lines, and if a black celebrity endorses a candidate, that is the individual they will vote for hands down. Standing in line for the presidential election, I could hear the person’s phone conversation in front of me – she had never voted in her life, and why ? The candidates were almost always white. The reason she voted in this election ? Because a black person was running for president, to quote the woman . . . Stop candycoating things – in the end it is a racial issue, especially in Atlanta. If Sean Combs endorsed Norwood, it wouldn’t surprise me to see the vote swing in that direction. College buddies aside, Sean Combs doesn’t reside in Atlanta on such a continual basis that he actually knows what it is like to LIVE in Atlanta, to know the true issues this city faces. When he is here, his existence is a priveleged and private one – he’s not running around the corner to Publix like everyman. His point of view will naturally be a very different one from yours or mine. I am continually disappointed with Atlanta’s choice of mayor since the days of Andrew Young or Maynard Jackson – these men were mayors Atlantans could be, and were, proud of. Kasim Reed, I am afraid, will complete the job Shirley Franklin began of completely ruining this city. Previous mayors brought unity and hope; Shirley began a culture of racial division that I believe Reed will continue to nuture.

Also, it is not exactly the safest place. But I guess it’s saving grace is that it is right around the corner from where I live in Sandy Springs. But don’t get any ideas about packing up and moving here. Thanks.
