So why not Tubby, and what’s taking so long to call him?

Goodness knows, Damon Evans is splendid as the athletics director at the University of Georgia. He’s bright. He’s engaging. He’s also persistent. In other words, he knows what he’s doing. But I’m here to help.

With Evans and his search committee having trouble closing the deal on a replacement for fired basketball coach Dennis Felton, I have a suggestion. In fact, I have two suggestions.

They are suggestions I’ve mentioned before in this space, and are suggestions that would match everything that Evans needs to turn his basketball program from less than mediocre into consistently good. He wants somebody who can coach. He wants somebody who can recruit. He wants somebody who is into developing the “student” as well as the “athlete” in student-athlete. He wants somebody with charisma.

All together now . . . Tubby Smith. Remember that guy? He’s the former Georgia coach who did wonderful things at Tulsa before doing the same during his two seasons with the Bulldogs. He also took Kentucky to a national championship after leaving Athens for Lexington.

Smith has spent the last two seasons coaching Minnesota into prominence. But it’s Minnesota, and it’s cold in Minnesota. It’s warm in Georgia, where Smith and his wife, Donna, loved their experience in Athens, and here’s another thing: Smith is pleading with the folks at Minnesota to build a basketball practice facility on campus. The Bulldogs already have one, and it’s perhaps the best in the nation at $35 million.

Actually, there’s more: When a reporter for the Minneapolis Star Tribune asked Smith earlier this week if he definitely will coach the Gophers next season, Smith said, “I never say never, but I’m here. I’m happy where we are. ‘Cause once you say [never], something happens, then everybody’s going to jump on you like you’re some demon or something. So I just say, at this time, I’m very happy here.”

  Hmmmm.

As for Choice No. 2, I told you a few weeks ago about my intriguing conversation in southern California with Craig Robinson, 46, the Oregon State coach who just happens to be the brother-in-law of the President of the United States.

Robinson just finished his first season at Oregon State and led the Beavers to seven victories in the Pac-10, compared to the zero they won the year before. Before that, he led Brown to a school-record 19 victories after the second of his two years at that Ivy League school. He can recruit, too. According to rivals.com, he just had the nation’s 22nd-best class. Plus, he is so insistent that his players speak correctly that he has a dictionary and thesaurus in the Oregon State locker room.

Did I mention that Robinson is as captivating in public and private as his sister, Michelle, and Barack Obama?

Let’s see. The obscurity of Oregon State or potential stardom at Georgia, especially with all of that basketball talent in the state these days. Yeah, Robinson would take the Bulldogs job in a minute.

  The same goes for Smith.

Just make the call (or calls), Damon.

I agree.

Perhaps the search firm is having a committee meeting to organize a committee to vote on a committee to make a recommendation that will investigate Tubby. If so then the committee will make a recommendation to the committee to contact UGA where a committee will discuss and proceed. The results of the recommendation will be public in March of 2010.

Evans may be bright but this whole basketball issue was mishandled.

How much does Tubby make in Minn.? Go get him.

The world is reversing its course…I agree with T.M.!!! I’ve been touting Tubby’s return here in Athens since Felton was released. I know he’s not the age Damon is looking for, and with Damon it’s as much about youthful appearance as it is with anything else, but Tubby was well liked when he was here, and he turned the program around in his first year. We wouldn’t have to worry about some higher profile program coming along and luring him away. He’s been there and has experienced that.
The second choice? Well, I’ve never agreed completely with you, Terence, but it doesn’t matter. If Tubby’s offered, I don’t believe we have to worry about choice 2.

Tubby isn’t leaving Minnesota, at least not for Georgia. That is a step down, not a step up or even a lateral move. He left Georgia for a reason before, and he’s not going to go back to it. If a better job does open up, I could see Tubby leaving for a job like Memphis or Maryland. And enough with “it’s cold in MN.” I hear that used as an excuse everytime a coach is in MN and could potentially leave for another program. Have you been to MN in the fall/spring/summer? It’s much more pleasant than the hot south. Also, they are going to build the practice facility, they are drawing up the blueprints now, and Tubby can have it any way he wants it.

Great ideas, Terence. I HATED it when Tubby left us. I’ve given him some bad press about that over the years, but I’d LOVE to have him back. And Craig Robinson would be absolutely great for our program. I’d love to have either one, in a New York minute.

Mr. Moore:

I am very confused at your endorsement given you past opinions on the UGa BBall hire.

Please recall that in your 3/9/2009 column where you you proposed Craig Robinson to be a great choice , “…Evans should make that call to the middle of nowhere. He might be pleasantly surprised and instantly blessed.” There was no mention of Tubby Smith, who is a solid coach and great person no doubt, in the article.

So what happened, why the inconsistency? This really hurts your credibility.

Thanks,

EW

Terence, and at least I spelled your name right; This is the best you could do? Let me recount your reasoning. We should hire Tubby Smith for the following reasons:

1. He’s in Minnesota, It’s cold there.
2. He loved (and you did say past tense loved) Athens, but left.
3. When asked if he would coach the Gophers next year, he said “I’m happy here.”

Good work Terence. Thanks for the information. And as if those intriguing nuggets weren’t enough, you brought up Oregon State’s coach AGAIN. And the only redeeming quality you can seem to provide for him is that his is the President’s brother-in-law (ooooooo….aahhhhh, big freaking whoop). C’mon, you can do better than this garbage. If not, just write about the Hawks, that should be an easier assignment for you with much more material to draw from.

And to Green Tea’s point, Let’s see who Terence wants as a coach at UGA.
1. Mizzou Coach, BLACK
2. Tubby, BLACK
3 OSU Coach, BLACK
4. VCU Coach, BLACK

I’m not calling you a racist Terence, I don’t know you, but what’s up with that?

Tubby would be a great hire. Yes Tubby packed his bags for UK and who can blame him. It is easier to recruit UK and he is a product of the school. UGA has been a football school and any coach who UGA buys, which is what they are doing, will leave for a bigger offer. Tubby has been to the big school and has a better chance than anyone of staying. He knows he could be the Vince Dooley of Basketball.

TM nice job promoting your guy with Obama references. Robinson has not proven himself as a coach and I do not like what I’ve heard about his opinions outside of Basketball.

I am a UGA grad and was a Georgia Girl (football hostess) back in the 90’s when Tubby wa coach. He was ALWAYS at the GA football games, every single home game, and he sat with the football recruits and really charmed those high school football players. He was so personable and my recruits were always so impressed that the basketball coach cared about other sports enough to get to know them. He was a class act and great to talk to. His personality was contagious and he moved around during the football games so he could talk to all the recruits. We really appreciated that. I thought he was awesome and I loved what he did with the basketball program while he was at UGA…he brought excitement back and I am all for bringing Tubby back…My dad and I (he is also a UGA grad) have been saying this for months. Decent talent in-state (I will grant you not as much as GA). Athens vs. the Twin Cities area? Please… that’s not even a contest.(And don’t give me the cold weather tired song and dance).

Wow, for ONCE I actually agree with Terrence – at least on sentiment.

I had the chance to get to know Tubby a little during his two years in Athens and I definitely loved the guy and had great respect for him. I also didn’t criticize his decision to take double the money to go to a true basketball school when he left for UK.

But while I agree with Terrence that it would be FANTASTIC to have Tubby back in Athens, I don’t think people go back and try and repeat history. I think if Tubby were interested, great, but I think he wouldn’t come back if we did call.

I agree. At least call Tubby. The worst he can do is say no. And who knows, he just might say yes. He is one of the 5 or 10 best coaches in the country and he runs a clean program. I just can’t believe he and his family like weather that cold. Wasn’t there just a blizzard up there last week?

As for Robinson, he appears to be a good coach, but Georgia is a conservative state and his association with Obama might work against him with those fans as it would help him with others. Also, he would be difficult to fire if things didn’t work out. How do you fire the president’s brother-in-law from such a high profile job? And what coach is going to be interested in trying to get things going at a school that has just fired Obama’s brother-in-law?

I don’t think Tubby would leave Georgia “high and dry” again. He did once, when he was younger and hadn’t been given the shot yet at a big time hoops school. He’s older, has done the Kentucky thing, and he could come to coach back at Georgia (wishful thinking) and be here ten years and then retire.

All well & good, but I just don’t want to get my hopes up that he’d say yes. I wish he would.

As for the Gophers blogging on here, get over yourselves. Minnesota hits in the -30’s range in the extra long winters. No way Tubby and Donna Smith are enjoying that. So while he may not want to “retrace” his steps at Georgia, he will leave Minny if it’s say for the Memphis job or maybe Maryland next season.

Those would be two likely destinations. I could also see him looking at another SEC school if a job down south opened up.

But no SANE people would choose to live in those wintry conditions if offered MORE money at schools as good or likely better for hoops and recruiting. And why would any high level kid want to actually play in frigid cold Minnesota? You think Derrick Favors or OJ Mayo would have a school like that on their short list?

LOL.

Tubby's not leaving

April 1st, 2009
12:18 pm

Pretty sure your AD isn’t pursuing Tubby because he knows it would be a waste of time. I know that’s just my opinion, but I’ll back it up with some facts and reasonable speculation:

1- the excuse that it’s colder here during winter is pathetic. I love how some of you complain about the cold… what’s wrong, not man enough to weather the storm? Plus, he has a son coaching high school ball, so why would he leave when some of his closest family is right here in the cities?

2- he’s already coached at Georgia. Think about it, why would he leave a program still being built to start all over again at a place he’s already experienced? He’s not getting any younger, you know, which brings me to my final point…

3- Tubby is what, 58? He’s getting to the point where he’s starting to think about his legacy and where he wants to leave it. It’s clear he wants to stay in MN long-term as long as the program goes in his direction. Sure he said he ‘never says never’, but why would Smith burn bridges if things suddenly don’t go in his direction here? If anything maybe he wants to establish something for his son Saul to take over.

Sorry, but I don’t think the odds are in your favor. However, the OSU coach is a class-act; I would pursue him

I would love to see Tubby Smith back in Athens. Yes I hated it when he left for UK. But I undestand why, leaving a football school for a B-ball school. But I feel hes already gotten the leaving for greener pastures thing out of his system. He and his wife loved living in Athens and would more than likely want to end Tubby’s career in Athens.
As for ABD100 get real, no one would stay in Minn. when they have the chance to coach in the SEC, and be at UGA. So keep on drinking the Minn. water and we’ll find you a nice mental hospital for you.

A few questions for Mark Anthony:

What, exactly, does your race have to do with anything? Is the fact that you’re white supposed to give you more credibility? Are we supposed to be impressed by the fact that you support the hiring of a black coach?

No, Mark, you sound like one of those pathetic, guilt-ridden white libs who helped that hopelessly overmatched “community activist” from the political cesspool of Chicago become POTUS.

Speaking of Obama, the first brother-in-law may be worth a look. Given Obama’s desire to take from the productive members of society and give to the deadbeats, maybe he will force players who have signed with North Carolina, UConn, etc., to play for UGA.

Grant was the best choice. Now, UGA is stucking competing with Memphis for a head coach. Of course Memphis is the better choice.

Ok TM, Robinson??? Really??? The strength of the PAC-10 is getting there, but I’m sure not about to put him in the SEC after one season of “7″ wins, when UK, LSU, FLA, and AL will dominate, unless we have the SEC championship in Atlanta every year with a tornado coming through. About Georgia talent. I think one of Tech’s problem and maybe Georgia’s is the local talent. Notice the Big East taking a big jump in quality and then look where the players come from. Notice Tech losing ground and notice where the players no longer come from. How many great Tech players came from Georgia in the Cremins era? Brian Oliver… Point is Georgia needs to hire a coach that is heavy in Northeast connections for recruiting and maybe mix in a few Georgia guys, let the locals see how the game is suppose to be played then recruit them.

It seems apparent that UGA is not interest in Tubby as they should and could of approached him much sooner. Nor are they interested in Bobby Knight, same reason. Calapari is off the board now as a potential as is Anderson. Also, the VCU coach who now is at Bama. Hmmm, Calapari just got what $4m a year at Kentucy? I would think the price tag for the UO coach price tag just went up on that news. Of course Memephis is still looking as well now. I know since we keep waiting and top canidates keep going else where maybe we can hire back Dennis Felton for only say $3m a year.

You must be joking. Tubby left just as the program was gaining momentum to take a better job. Since he has already demonstrated that he will leave, what happens when the next high profile comes along? Why would we expect him to stick? Answer: We don’t. Georgia basketball needs a Mark Richt – someone that is not just accepting a job but taking on a program and becoming a part of it. Tubby was great but he is an employee, not an owner.

because Billy Gillispie is the man for the job. He’s the only one that will fill out Stegeman and fire up the fan base. I mean, when Kentucky came to Georgia, there were more Kentucky fans than UGA fans at the game.

So the right question is “what’s taking them so long to call Billy G?”

I wrote more about this issue here > http://bleacherreport.com/articles/147757-why-billy-gillispie-is-the-best-coach-for-georgia-bulldogs-basketball

sorry, terence, for all the dingbats.
Here is why Tubby makes sense. he would only coach for 7 more yrs, long enough to bring stability to UGA b’ball. he was such a good coach/recruiter that ron jirsa was able to have a winning record. i knew tubby a little bit when he coached UGA and i’ve never seen such a class guy, and class is what we need!
Tubby doesn’t make sense because of his buyout. Also, the memphis job is open so i doubt he would turn down memphis and choose UGA.
That brings us to the Robinson guy. He makes sense cause he WANTS the job and would take it in a heartbeat. I have no idea if he can coach, nor do i have any idea jeff capel or the others can coach.
we thought dennis could coach, but he couldnt. nor could buzz peterson, jerry green, wade houston or matt doherty.
anybody got eddie fogler’s number? or mark gottfried, or john brady?

I can’t believe all of you.
Breaking down his articles into “who’s your WHITE REC??” Are you all THAT racist that you just assume he’s racist cus he recommends some coaches that happen to be black?
And the rest of you that don’t want BO brother-in-law simply because he’s… BO’s brother-in-law. It’s about basketball, not politics.

That said, I’m not sure what I think about Tubby coming back. I still want Bobby Knight, dammit!

Boy it sure is reassuring to read the posts here…I mean I really wouldn’t want to think that we didn’t still have a majority of bigoted, homophobic peckerwoods hanging around. Easily 3/4ths of those here have shown their character – and I’m particularly impressed that the Campo poster – whether it’s a father, daughter or son (or all three) – is managing to teach their kid how one is supposed to act around these parts. Makes you proud to see a Dad making time to share a legacy with his kid. As for Terrence, sure he’s suggesting a black coach. Maybe it’s because he’s black but indeed it’s also because he knows that Tubby possesses the one thing that we have to have to get this mess turned around – the ability to inspire Georgia’s MacDonanld’s All-Americans to come to Athens to get a winning tradition started…so that the fans will show up…so that future top talent will want to come and play for a school that gives a rip about basketball. My bet is that Craig Robinson could do the same thing – of course you guys really showed you’re butts on that one. God what a herd of hoses-asses we’ve got around here.

I’m seriously just trolling the Georgia B-Ball related stories and the UGA site at AJC just to laugh.

Georgia is a cess pool for college basketball. Anderson accepts $500k less per year to stay at Missouri! That should put it in perspective. There are LEAST 50 or 60 better programs/places to be. Minnesota is one of them.

And, up and coming coaches like Butler’s coach won’t come here. It’s career suicide. See Dennis Felton.

Someone will eventually accept $2M per year. No doubt. But UGA has to realize this program is a joke and likely always will be. Recruiting base is far from rich. There are a few stars a year coming out of H.S. B-ball in Georgia, but not dozens of players. This is a football and baseball state. And many of the high school kids aren’t as ready for big time b-ball as those coming from California, the Northeast, Carolina, and even the Midwest. Just better coaching and programs at that level outside of Georgia.

Get over it. But it is fun reading!

For all the people who want Jay Wright to coach UGA, wake up. He will not trade his Amani suits to come and coach at an old cattle barn and wear blue jeans. The guy eats cheesesteaks not deer steaks. The UGA fanatics should realize that money does not buy happiness, or Mike Anderson would be at news conference as your new coach. And forget Capel, if he comes to GA. he should have his head checked.

To blufftondawg,

Your various points on Tubby and Craig Robinson ring true. Here’s the bottom line: If Georgia officials approach either one of them, they wouldn’t need a Plan C or D.

DirtyDawg

yohon, Tubby would take it because he liked being in Athens and even though he left ‘for his dream job’ at Kentucky, his experience there was miserable – through no fault of his. Those folks just couldn’t be satisfied…and, if truth be known, when it comes to their basketball coach, Kentucky is just about as prejudiced as we are down here. So , he’d love to get a couple of shots to rub Big Blue’s nose in it every year.

Anyone who has been employed at the University of Georgia knows that Michael Adams micromanages every aspect of everything that goes on there, until something goes wrong, and he blames some innocent underling for his own incompetence. Damon Evans only function is as a figurehead to demonstrate that Adams is politically correct and enlightened in matters of race. Tubby worked for a clone of Adams at UK, and he is not about to repeat that mistake. Obama’s brother-in-law is not coming either. He is too connected for Adams to badger. Adams runs the university like a medieval court, and no coach with any self respect wants to work in that environment.

I’m w/ Terrance on this one. I was at UGA when Tubby came in & he created a lot of excitement before the season started. But I doubt he would come back. Craig Robinson at Oregon State would be an excellent choice. And despite what a lot of people are saying, there are plenty of coaches that would love to coach at UGA.

ESPN is reporting that Missouri’s Mike Anderson received an offer last night from Georgia somewhere near $2 million per season.
It isn’t known whether Anderson will or has accepted. Regardless, Georgia appears to have its guy, and I’m told there are options should they swing and miss on this one. Either way, there should be a coach in place within the next couple of days.

I rarely agree with you. I do on this one. Tubby would be a very good hire for UGA. He could elevate the program to national prominence which is a couple of steps up from it’s current position. To be truly elite and make a hire like UK just did, we have to get closer.

Tubby? Are you kidding me. You people who want Tubby back are the same people who got dumped by the same girl 5 times in high school. No way. And Lash, here is why. Villinova: baseketball tradition. Georgia: baseketball graveyard. We are not going to get the cream of the crop, we are going to have to create it and 5 years later go through the process again. As long as we have the same facilities, this will always be the case. And TM, just once I would like you to suggest a white coach just for some credibility. Robinson? Why not some black assistant with some successful program. That would make more sense.
