Kiffin knocks Gators, so what’s the big deal?

Leave that man alone.

Well, this time.

The way things are going for Lane Kiffin, the self-inflicted tackling dummy during his first weeks as head football coach at the University of Tennessee, there will be a next time. There also will be a few more times after that.

As for this time, Kiffin was absolutely right to tell our Michael Carvell that he is done apologizing to Florida and everybody else over his erroneous comments about Gators coach Urban Meyer and his recruiting practices.

Remember? During a recruiting breakfast last month, Kiffin boasted to Tennessee supporters (note: Tennessee supporters) that Meyer tried to “cheat” and still didn’t get wide receiver prospect Nu’Keese Richardson. That’s because Richardson stiff-armed Florida down the stretch before sprinting to Tennessee.

It turns out that, contrary to what Kiffin told those Tennessee supporters (note: Tennessee supporters), Meyer didn’t violate an NCAA rule when he phoned Richardson during a recruiting trip to Tennessee.

So help me out. Where’s the controversy here? Kiffin was talking to a bunch of … Tennessee supporters.

Have you ever been to one of these booster-type events for an average college team from a power conference? They are pep rallies that often go over the top, with the head coach serving as school mascot, drum major, standup comic, resident psychologist, PR man and grand poobah between talking X’s and O’s.

They say stuff. They say silly stuff. Then, during one of the few times when some or all of their stuff gets into the public domain, they say predictable stuff — such as, “I didn’t say that,” or “I was misquoted,” or “I was taken out of context.”

Even Kiffin tried to back away from his words to Tennessee supporters (note: Tennessee supporters) by telling Carvell, “It was not as bad (as it was made out to be). I didn’t mean any disrespect toward the University of Florida or Coach Meyer.”

Yes, Kiffin did, but so what? He was saying that stuff to Tennessee supporters.

It happens.

Kiffin sure likes to run his mouth for a guy who hasn’t coached his team in a single game. He had better win big and win often, or he is going to look like a real fool, even more than he does now, when it’s all said and done.

Thanks TM, you’re right on this of course, but you’re also fanning the flames by weighing in on it as well. Those who want to hate on Kiffin are going to ignore the venue and the audience and the purpose…along with the fact that Kiffin didn’t actually report Urbie for anything.
It was a joke by a Tennessee coach for Tennessee people at a Tennessee function and had there not been one local media member there, the whole incident would have been message board fodder instead of a nationwide media event.

I believe Kiffin is sorry for the reprimand from the SEC and the negative articles. The ‘I’m sorry if I offended you.’ crap is just that. Even my kids no that is not an apology. So does Kiffin. He is not sorry he said it and in the future he will continue to take any chance he gets to attack his opposition. See his references to the babies in FL not accepting his apology. Isn’t he a football coach?

All this talking has little effect on the field. All the SEC players are hyped up for every league contest. This nonsense is really just football fans expressing their desire to skip forward to August and some action on the field. It will also be used to fill the papers the week of the FL TN game.

If this verbal stuff really changed the outcome of the games or recruiting, wouldn’t we hear it every week from every coach?

I really dont think any of the things Kiffin has said are that bad. It seems like the media is trying to blow everything out of proportion. It wasnt meant to upset anybody it was meant for a bunch of old Tennessee alumni to get them fired up about Tennessee. I really think this program is probably heading in a good direction. This recruiting class looks particularly strong considering getting a late jump with a new coaching staff. This may not be there year but i think Tennessee is looking good for the future.

He has yet to prove he is a winner yet he is talking a lot of crap. Spurrier has earned the right to talk trash and make comments. Kiffin has only proven he has a big mouth.

Terrence “Wet Blanket” Moore -

It’s a rivalry, man. I’m a Georgia fan and grad. I can see that Kiffin has a lot of potential and has a bright future in front of him at Tennessee (starting with his first good recruiting class). But when a rival team does something stupid, we like to jump on it and have fun with it! Like UT fans singing Rocky Top to us when they beat us at home a few years ago. Or Richt’s endzone dance and Urban’s timeout retaliation the next year.

It’s just in good rivalry. But thanks for putting a damper on it.

And what he said about the people of Pahokee, Fl and then making that recruit look like a fool for lying for him, all just so he could brag about getting the recruit? I guess thats all OK too? There is no question that more than a few major college coaches have uttered something inflammatory about their top rival to his or her set of fans at a pep rally, booster club, frat meeting or whatever.

Terrence, there is no excuse for writing this article. You can state more than a few have done it and it’s alright if it’s not out of control, but do you need me to bring up the comments to the South Carolina recruit again?

Forget the Florida stuff, that is old news. I am shocked you even brought it up. The more recent problem is him bashing EVERY single recruit that has ever played for South Carolina. He took personal shots at every one of them with his ‘pumping gas like all the other recruits who go to South Carolina’ comments. His defense is he never said it, which is the same defense he originally used for two other comments he has been blasted for since becoming the UT coach, both of which he later apologized for .. in other words admitting he said those things, and then admitting he lied about not saying him.

He is a big mouthed, white trash idiot, that is representing a school of higher, well, somewhat higher, learning. There is no excuse for him to make these comments.

And no, I am not a South Carolina or Florida fan. I am a Georgia fan, and a ‘mature’ white male. It would be like me making a statement that you could go work for the AJC, just like all the other so-called journalists who have never amounted to anything in their lives and ended up writing like first graders. We all know there are at least one or two decent journalists at the AJC, so this statement, even if accurate for the majority, would still not be something that should be stated in public.

Mark Richt spent a solid year apologizing for the end zone dance. The only thing it did was convince his players that they should all fear the Gators and Urban ran it up on them anyway. Screw Florida, they already beat us 59-20 in 2007. If we get run up on people will say “we knew that was coming”; but if we don’t and somehow make it a game or, dare I say, pull on Ole Miss on them……….watch out. Win/win for Kiffin.

Articles like this make me glad we haven’t renewed our subscription to the AJC. Kiffin has offended just about everyone imaginable and has issued almost no apologies. Great start for Kiffin. Hired an all star coaching staff. Secured a top 10 recruiting class in a few weeks. Rejected some highly ranked players because they didn’t fit his system. Sent message that he will level with recruits and not recruit them to sit on the bench or change positions.

He is making sure players go to class. Has kept them out of jail. Weeded out some undesirables. Implemented respectable dress code and hair cuts. Implemented rigorous conditioning program every morning at 5:30am. Players are buying in and getting fired up about the program.

Has UT logo on Gator’s bulletin boards. Everyone is talking about him getting the attention of prospects. Most top prospects will at least look at the Vols next year. I believe he is doing the right things to build the program. I’m not sure if he has a QB to carry the team this year, but he will get top players future years.

You can YELP at Terrance Moore all you want, but the truth is you know UT is coming after you. You hope Fla hangs 70 on Tenn, but I remember 2 years ago when UT hung 51 on the pups BETWEEN THE HEDGES WITH NoSho and Stifford. Don’t look back, something is about to giiit you.

What has Kiffen done? He has taken a fan base that had grown disenchanted and hoped it could beat Florida to one that is energized and now believes it is only a matter of time until we once again stand with the SEC’s best. The other schools – and their fans – don’t matter and we don’t care what you think. He has also kept Tennessee’s name in the forefront during this recruiting period. Read the book “Meat Market” and you will see that CLK is following the model of Pete Carroll at USC who followed the model of Jimmy Johnson at Miami in the early 80’s. The common link? Ed Orgeron and his recruiting ability.

And let’s just say that the comments were not very favorable of you, yet unfounded, and created a negative image of your professional style of work. Now I’m no genius sir, but something tells me you might be a bit miffed, and harbor some ill feelings toward that dude that denigrated your character in the national spotlight. This guy is no Steve Spurrier trust me. SOS had won a conference championship at DUKE before he ever stepped up to the plate of the SEC. He had won a Heisman Trophy as a player. So he had credibility from the very beginning. All this Kiffin dude has done is be whacked by Al Davis after a couple mediocre yrs., and here he comes to the SEC all BIG and BAD!! My take on all of this would be to judge a book by it’s cover, and Mr. Kiffin’s cover is pretty tattered with no substance in the book.

Paul, the issue is that Lame Kitten is a pathological liar (ask Al Davis) who will do absolutely anything to try to get ahead. Encouraging recruits to lie to their coaches, families, teammates is certainly an indication of his character (or lack of it). It was not only Florida involved in his lack of ethics, but also LSU (Kitten lied to in incoming recruit about others being brought in at that position), Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina. Competing is one thing, lying and cheating is another. Spurrier certainly had some interesting barbs directed at other schools, but there is a difference between poking fun at them and calling them cheaters. I can only wonder what they paid for Bryce Brown – I am sure that is under the NCAA microscope given all the smoke he has created in 2 months.

On the subject of running up the score….why is it that when the Gator “Evil Genus” beats UGA 52-17 “between the hedges” and Urban’s Gators beat UGA 49-10 It’s “RUNNING-UP the SCORE, RUBBING IT IN, Lack OF CLASS, etc.”, but when UGA beats Florida 75-0 and UGA beats GA Tech 50-3 it’s showing UGA coaches characteristics of “Fairness, Class, Christanity, etc.”?
Just wondering!
GO GATORS!

It’s funny but the only people I see defending this guy is Tennessee fans that have no choice but to hope against hope and this columnist…the rest of the 10 million of us see him for exactly what he is…a Steve Spurrier wanna be (I see that he even wears the visor). He’s one of those guys who was born on third base and claimed he hit a triple. Daddy better be a hell of a coach!

Thanks Terrance! Another article about Tennessee helps our cause greatly. And, you are right. It’s not a big deal. The media hounds and the rival fans have acted like Kiffin has planned a terrorist attack or something. This is nothing more than rival school fodder.

Hey “Steve”. He didn’t say the “gas pumping” thing. Even the recruit acknowledged that. Haven’t you wondered why his high school coach has gone into hiding since this was reported? Reason … it was all a big fat lie! Just somebody trying to stir the pot. His coach should be the one who is called into question.

I can’t wait until Kiffin gets all the players that he needs to kick some butt in the SEC. Get ready boys and girls, the Big Orange is on its way back. Deal with it! Go Vols, Go!!!!!

Lane Kiffin has done what nobody has in about 15 years… make Al Davis look like a genius.

The guy is an absolute idiot, but considering Tennessee is the “dummy” school of the SEC, he fits in nicely.

Kiffin was right to call Oscar Meyer aka Urban Cryer a cheater. He is that and more. He offered a gymnastics scholarship to a potential player’s girlfriend, he constantly calls recruits while they visit other schools, he leads the NCAA with the most players arrested, and flat-out lied to Jevan Snead about recruiting Tebow as a tight-end. Mike Slive has lacked the stones to reel Cryer in given his success on the football field. I think what really burns the UF faithful is that Kiffin is acting like Spurrier used to and for once, they are on the receiving end. I love it!! Go get ‘em Kiffin!!

I can hardly wait for the college football season to start, though I love march madness and the braves. When Lane Kiffin gets his rear end handed to him and the Big Orange nation I will laughing my head off. I never liked Phil Fulmer either, he would drop a dime on every coach in the SEC in order to land a few good recruits. ROLLLLL TIDE!!!!

It is articles like this from people like TM that are the reason why this paper is dying. TM and CT need to start their own liberal rag and then maybe the AJC could get some readres back

I was at Augusta National’s media day last year when you played, and you were the joke of the crowd. You’re the worst sports writer at the AJC and harshly looked upon by your peers.

Your shock articles about polarizing topics are the only reason people read your stuff. It CERTAINLY isn’t your writing ability.

Georgia fans are feeling left out because Lane hasn’t insulted their coach or program yet.
Don’t fret about it, Bulldog fans– Lane isn’t ignoring you because he thinks UGA is insignificant… he is ignoring you because UGA fans and coaches aren’t nearly as obnoxious as those in Tuscaloosa, gainesville, or Columbia.

I noticed watching the Georgia, Georgia Tech game rerun last night that my favorite coach CPJ gave the fans behind the Tech bench in Athens a little what for before walking off the field to shake Richt’s hand. Apparently and according to Buck Belue the announcer those Georgia fans had been riding CPJ and the Tech team pretty hard the whole game and CPJ could not resist a little “how do you like me now” back at them with two seconds left in the game. If a coach hasn’t got some of that in him why is he even in this game? That Florida coach probably knew that recruit was on Tennessee soil. His call was not that innocent and I am sure the things he was saying about Tennessee to that recruit while he was on the Vol’s dime were not that flattering about the school. It wasn’t cheating but it was cheap. When in the make up of things has college football showed much class in the last few decades on any subject. It boiled over so much in the 90s they had to tone it down in Miami, FSU which all competed with Florida in recruiting. I mean those thugs even made the NFL nervous. I was thinking the other night how much I hate Duke and that Coach K and how much enjoyment those flopping whining yankee transplants bring to basketball because they get my blood boiling. It would be so damn dull without them to hate. To watch Spurrier, I being a disinterested third party observer, work these country boy coaches who are defenseless in the cross hairs is pure entertainment. They can make him quit all that by just beating him, but he gets them so knotted up knowing that is the only revenge they have they get the stadium backups, and their players feel it in the coaching staff and they get constipated too, along with the fans. At one time and maybe even today all Spurrier has to do is walk into Athens and say boo and he has picked up seven points in the translation.

everyone thought al davis, owner of the oakland raiders, was just a bitter, senile old man when he held that press conference after firing kiffin.

kiffin is proving daily that al davis was on target.

I guess black jokes are ok if I’m telling them to (note: White supremacist)? I guess lies are ok if I’m telling them to (note: The Devil)? Oh, almost forgot, I guess anything Kiffin says is ok as long as he is talking to (Note: Tennessee supporters)? Nice logic Terence.

Kiffin is an immature punk. I certainly hope the SEC teams on the UT schedule take his lame ass to the woodshed every year until he’s run out of town. An unproven west coast loudmouth. What a stupid hire the AD at UT made. You can’t spell STUPID without UT…

Your article should have mentioned that it was Kiffin who was caught violating NCAA rules (cheating) and not Urban Meyer. That was an important omission.
