Leave that man alone.
Well, this time.
The way things are going for Lane Kiffin, the self-inflicted tackling dummy during his first weeks as head football coach at the University of Tennessee, there will be a next time. There also will be a few more times after that.
As for this time, Kiffin was absolutely right to tell our Michael Carvell that he is done apologizing to Florida and everybody else over his erroneous comments about Gators coach Urban Meyer and his recruiting practices.
Remember? During a recruiting breakfast last month, Kiffin boasted to Tennessee supporters (note: Tennessee supporters) that Meyer tried to “cheat” and still didn’t get wide receiver prospect Nu’Keese Richardson. That’s because Richardson stiff-armed Florida down the stretch before sprinting to Tennessee.
It turns out that, contrary to what Kiffin told those Tennessee supporters (note: Tennessee supporters), Meyer didn’t violate an NCAA rule when he phoned Richardson during a recruiting trip to Tennessee.
So help me out. Where’s the controversy here? Kiffin was talking to a bunch of … Tennessee supporters.
Have you ever been to one of these booster-type events for an average college team from a power conference? They are pep rallies that often go over the top, with the head coach serving as school mascot, drum major, standup comic, resident psychologist, PR man and grand poobah between talking X’s and O’s.
They say stuff. They say silly stuff. Then, during one of the few times when some or all of their stuff gets into the public domain, they say predictable stuff — such as, “I didn’t say that,” or “I was misquoted,” or “I was taken out of context.”
Even Kiffin tried to back away from his words to Tennessee supporters (note: Tennessee supporters) by telling Carvell, “It was not as bad (as it was made out to be). I didn’t mean any disrespect toward the University of Florida or Coach Meyer.”
Yes, Kiffin did, but so what? He was saying that stuff to Tennessee supporters.
It happens.

Kiffin’s like free money for football fans, reporters and their editors.
Speaking of whom, I’d like to express my commiseration for the AJC staffers who are losing their jobs. It sucks. I’m sorry.

I think it’s funny all the UGA fans bashing Kiffin when the Saint in Athents (richt) can’t keep his players out of jail. Ahahahhaha, but hey coach richt does go to church wednesdays and sundays, so it’s ok!!!
Go Kiffin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
sidenote, not a fan of UGA, Florida, or Tennessee.

I live in TN, and all the UT fans keep telling me how great Kiffin is and how they are huge Kiffin fans. I don’t understand people who make these types of judgments before the season has even started. It’s very bizarre to me, and any clarification on the matter would be appreciated.

How much longer are you going to continue stealing a paycheck from the AJC, Mr. Moore?
Huh?

Terrance Moore following the end zone dance in 2007: “So much for discipline, poise and class. They could return as staples of Georgia’s football program under Mark Richt, but it’ll take a while.”
Ouch Terrance. That’s some pretty strong business bud.
Terrance Moore on Lane Kiffin spreading lies about opposing coaches:
“Yes, Kiffin did, but so what? It happens.”
Lying happens folks. Get over it. What’s the big deal?
So much for Terrance Moore’s crebility. It could return, but it’ll take a while.

Kiffin needs to understand that making comments like that to members of the media , like you Terrance, will be reported to the public because ALL reports, like you Terrance, are always looking to stir something up. If Lane Kiffin isn’t smart enough to realize that, his time in Knoxville will be short. Maybe he can go coach for Al Davis again as that worked out well for him last time.

Wasn’t that far out of control? It was borderline slander! He’s lucky Meyer doesn’t slap a libel suit on his candy ass.
Richt may not be the best or the brightest coach in the SEC, but at least he knows how to keep his mouth shut when he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
Huh?

Terrance couldn’t write a column about Georgia football last year without an end zone dance reference. You would have thought that Mark Richt slapped his mother the way he went on and on and on about it. Yet, Kiffin tells a salacious LIE and “what’s the big deal?” says Terrance. It was all in fun. Hardy har har.
Something smells mighty fishy in here Mr. Moore.

TM- Please say something good about Mark Richt, or we’ll never hear the end of it. Talk about how his hair style will be en vogue again in a few years, or say that he’s a helluva carpet salesman. The eyes of God will not look favorably upon you if you don’t proclaim your adoration for St. Mark.

Articles like this make me glad we haven’t renewed our subscription to the AJC. Kiffin has offended just about everyone imaginable and has issued almost no apologies. When he has opened his mouth he has typically dug himself in deeper… yet no one in the press is willing to hold him to his own words.
The last thing we need is sportswriters who pretend we’re not accountable for what we say… or write.
