How many Asians were in Major League Baseball 30 years ago? How many Hispanics? I didn't realize that it was such a dire emergency that the percentage of Afro Black men in baseball is plummeting. God forbid that they would want to be doctors or lawyers or business men. Ask Barack if he played baseball. What about MLK? What about Kenneth Chenault? (Since 2001, he's been the CEO of American Express that just happens to be black)

GOD FORBID that more African-Americans are pursuing more noble and sometimes more lucrative endeavors than Major League Baseball.

The comment that was posted above from Vik Tim Mentality on March 27th at 4:10am is untrue and in poor taste. Slandering me and my husband will not erase the good that we are doing in the community. It WILL however get you in a heck a lot of trouble once the AJC connects the dots to where this comment generated from. Cyberspace does offer a degree of anonymity, but it's just that- a degree.

I grew up on the soutside of Atlanta and received a soccer scolarship to a private college in GA. When I joined the team we had four white europen players and two black Jamacian players. They didn't care about race or color. Everyone was a part of team and the best players played. It didn't matter what they looke like or where they were from. If Fran Wren could find a three eyed purple dude from cabbagetown that could hit fifty home runs and play left field you could pencil him against the Philles on opening day.

Terrance I like your Nique and Murph tributes, but this make me puke when I have to read it over and over again.

I am a member of the LEAD Program and it saddens me to sit and read some of this ignorant, sterotypical nonsense you people put on here. If you don't want to read his article then don't. Nobody holds you for ransom. No one is holding a gun to your head. Do your research about the program and you will be amazed at some of the things we do to for the kids to better themselves and their communities. While others simply look to better kids in baseball, we are trying to make leaders out of STUDENT-ATHLETES. Instead of bashing Terence, why not get involved with YOUR community and do something positive. If you feel there is a lack of anyone in ANY sport, do something about it. QUIT TALKING. THAT'S ALL YOU ALL EVER DO IS TALK. But when it comes time for action, you are probably the one to say, "Awww, they got it. They don't need me." That's not only for sport, but for our school system too. Quit being a part of the problem and be part of the solution.

The fact is that the Braves are the MOST pro-active organizations in MLB when it comes to luring more inner city youth back to the game of baseball (Fact). RBI (Reviving Baseball in the Inner City) is a major league baseball initiative that the Jr. Braves support. It began in 2005 with 500 Atlanta inner city youth. Two years later that number had almost doubled to 900 in 2007. From 2007 to 2008 the number jumped by 1,100 participant children to over 2,000! In 2009 the Jr. Braves RBI program will have over 3,200 participants! The FACT is the Braves have the most successful RBI program in Major League Baseball (look at the numbers).
Within two miles of Turner Field is the Braves Baseball Academy! The Braves Foundation donated $500,000 to jump start the program in 2005.

Here are some more FACTs for you Mr. Moore. In the past 30 years, the number of black, American born players in the MLB has decreased from about 27% to around 10%. I don't dispute these numbers. With that being said the number of black, American born players in the NFL has gone from around 25-30% (then) to about 70% (now) in the same time period. In the NBA, the numbers for that time period are 40-50% (then) to 85% (now). Also the number of Latin American players in MLB(minority, non American born players), has gone from 7% in 1990 to 29% in 2008. Based on FACT, the number of minorities in MLB is at an all time high when you factor in all minority groups (Asian born players account for 3% in 2008, up from less than 1% in 1999). I guess these FACTs don't matter to you Mr. Moore. Either you don't care about true racially equality by including all minority groups or you have an agenda to push. Very sad, sir, very sad.

Mr. Moore,
Your yearly piece on the Atlanta braves not having enough black American players is almost as compelling as last year. I am waiting for your story on why we don't have any white starters for the Atlanta Hawks or why there aren't any black Atlanta Thrashers or why there are so many more black players on the Falcons. Wheres that one Mr. Moore? The reason there aren't as many white or Asian or Latino starters on these teams is because the players on the roster are better and color doesn't matter when you're in the business of winning championships.

It is absurd that in 2009 we are still talking about race. Frank Wren and the Atlanta Braves want to field a winning team that will bring us a world series. Should we give a roster slot to a black ball player over a ball player of another race who is better purely based on race? That sounds bigoted to me. I'm white and wouldn't care if the braves fielded an entire roster of black, Asian and Hispanic players if it meant in October we were watching a parade on Peachtree Street. I hope you go to another paper so I don't have to see this crap in my newspaper.

After reading all of the responses to Mr. Moore's article, I felt the need to add one more bit of insight concerning the real goal and passion of CJ and Kelli Stewart as fleshed out through LEAD. I am a resident of East Cobb and was referred to CJ several years ago when my son expressed his desire to me to be a student-athlete in college. Since that time I have watched and listened to CJ and developed what I hope will be a lasting friendship based on a mutual passion to use the resources God has given us to positively impact lives. The life-changing event for the young men involved in the LEAD program is using baseball as the means to get a college education while also learning what it means to be a man of character and a servant leader. This education will open to them a world of possibilities and change not only their lives but those that follow them. And to those who do not have "changing lives" as a goal, consider this - the percentage of blacks and hispanics in this country that currently graduate from high school and pursue higher education is around 12% and 5%, respectively. There are studies indicating that 20-30 years from now the majority of high school graduates will be blacks and hispanics. If, as a nation, we do not increase the above percentages we will have a work force that is unable to compete in a world economy, and we will all suffer. LEAD is a program that is addressing this concern, and worthy of support.
