A Final Ramblin’ for 2010?

Its been a quiet month for Ramblin’ On.

I’ve admittedly neglected things here the past few weeks.

But then, in my defense, December was a crazily busy time in our family with birthdays,  a new puppy, a trip to Vegas, deadlines in the office, and two kids who are still young enough to enjoy the magic and wonder associated with all things Christmas.

We’ll load up the Jeep and hit the road headed towards Tampa tomorrow morning.  I’m hoping to make good enough time to be plopped in front my my father-in-law’s new disgustingly large 3D plasma TV in time for kick off against Air Force.  Say a prayer for me if you get a chance…the odds that we’ll make it to Tampa by 5pm are extremely long since the kids and the puppy will require extra stops.  But hey…it gives me something to aim for right?  And there’s always the DVR!

Just in case I’m not able to post again until after New Year’s, I’ll leave you gentle readers with a few thoughts here in the waning days of 2010…

  • How would Tech’s season have played out if we hadn’t lost four juniors to the NFL?  We missed Dwyer as a home run threat, we missed Burnett in the defensive secondary, we missed Morgan’s pass rush, and we missed Thomas at WR most of all blocking and catching the ball downfield.  With those guys we very likely repeat as ACC champ and recover the Governer’s Cup.
  • Beyond just those early departures, something was wrong with the 2010 Yellow Jackets.  I don’t think the Jackets played a complete game even once during the 2010 season.  The offense and defense played well in spurts…but never for a complete game and never at the same time.
  • If Air Force beats us tomorrow, we’ll finish with a losing record for the first time in something like 14 years.  That’s unacceptable coming off an ACC title with a senior quarterback.  I don’t care who you lose early to the NFL.  I don’t care if you changed defensive coordinators.
  • We’re going to be OK at quarterback.  Tevin Washington played admirably when pressed into service after Nesbitt’s injury.  We’re going to see a real quarterback competition in the Spring.  I just hope we see some competition at wide receiver as well.

That’s enough about football.  I think people who follow the Yellow Jackets know what our issues are and where the challenges lie.

What about Georgia Tech hoops?

I took my daughter to the GT vs UGA women’s game.  We’ve got a winner in Machelle Joseph.  Great coach and program builder.

I try not to think about Georgia Tech men’s hoops.

I bought into a season ticket package with some buddies this season, but I’m pretty disgusted with things right now.  I’ll be sitting second row for FSU, Clemson, and Miami later in the season.  I’ll go because its fun to be on campus, but I don’t have lofty expectations.

Paul Hewitt?  We can all thank Dave Braine for the legacy Dan Radakovich has been saddled with.

I’ll be there, cheering for the team and supporting the players on the court.  The suits on the bench, well…maybe not so much.

As Forrest Gump would say, “That’s all I’ll say about that.”

There’s only one real constant in blogging or writing on the internet.  It eats into your passion for the subject you are writing about, especially if you are a fan blogger.  Anonymous comments ruin any chance at legitimate discussion or discourse and your alumni friends and family press you to aggressively counter what they perceive as hack jobs written by staff writers.  Before you know it, your hobby has turned into a chore.

A truly successful blog is always a combination of original content and an entertaining community that fosters discussion, both positive and negative, without vulgarity and anonymous personal attacks.

2011 should be an interesting year with plenty to talk about:

Will Coach Johnson rebound in the post-Nesbitt era and with his own recruits in place?

Will Coach Hewitt win some road games and have the ACC success that has eluded Tech for so long now?

Will Coach Hall get the baseball Jackets back into the College World Series?

Will Tech’s women’s programs continue to excel as we have seen with basketball, softball, and volleyball recently?

Will that Boggs guy still be blogging about Tech for the AJC?

Only time will tell!

Happy Holidays!

Happy New Year!

Go Jackets!

Crap second…
I think the only chance we have to git rid of Hewitt was last season when he was approached by another school. Otherwise, we’re stuck with a $7M payout every year for the next three or four years if I remember the banter. The guy can’t coach and can barely with with top 10 talent. Some of the top coaches out there would make it to the sweet 16 EVERY year with this talent. We live in Atlanta, one of the most basketball rich cities in the country. We should be able to attract a damn good coach. We’ll see what happens once we’re eliminated in March.

IMO ….
MB was not really missed – don’t the the DBs were any worse than 2009. DM was missed – GT got NO QB pressure this season. DT was missed as nobody wanted to STEP UP at WR. Only JDs home-run threat was missed as AA got what, 1200 yds this season?

GTs 6-6 record is directly attributalbe to TOs & NOT TAKING ADVANTAGE OF OPPORTUNITIES!! Let me rehash key moments in all 6 loses:

Kansas … DROPPED (TD) passes, and a couple BAD penalties.
NCST … late 1st Qtr, 3rd & 9, and JN overthrows a WIDE open Orwin S (would have been a 50+ gain, if not a TD). NEXT play NCST blocks punt for a TD.
Clemson … FIRST CU series, 3-and-out (and if 3rd down pass was thrown 6 inches higher J Trrnt has pick 6). GT roughs punter on 4th down, CUs 1st play after is a 55 yd TD run.
VT … TWO ints in the endzone, and a special teams 90-yd kickoff TD by VT.
Miami … late 1st Qtr 3rd & 10, M Butler committs Pass Int to keep Miami alive. Later in same drive GT is DRAWN OFFSIDES on 4th & 4 FG attempt. 2 or 3 plays later UM scores TD to go up 14-0. 2nd half drive to make it 14-10, only give up 80 TD on UMs 1st play after. Then driving to cut it to 21-17, fumble at UMs 5 yd line.
GA … opening kickoff TO, and NO pts! NEXT drive … fumble on GAs 4 yd line. Later, ANOTHER fumble that GA scoops & scores on. Outlplayed the Dogs AGAIN on the field, but lost where it only counts, the scoreboard!

And any of you GA fans that want to gloat … just remember, that was a no talented, high school offense-running team that put up 411 yds rushing. Enough already you clowns. Enjoy your Holiday Season, and take some of Tunica’s $ if you’re heading to the Liberty Bowl!

Congrats on the Moral Victory against UGA this year Techies.

That Coach you guys make fun of, Mark Richt……

is now 9-1 against Tech, and 2-1 against Paul Johnson. Regardless of who outplayed who, the bottom line is who OUTSCORED who.

Merry Christmas Techies. For all the crap welove to give you, I do wish you Happy Holidays and hope you got to spend good time with family and friends. Look forward to 2011, another year of dominance over your Trade School.

Why did Cowboys Buerler miss extra point in Christmas Day game?
The kicker has nothing to gain and everything to lose on an extra point kick late in the game.
If he misses, even more so than college, many fans are ready to jump on his back.
This is one reason I am adamantly against booing any college player.
We are becoming a fan base ready to get on someone back.
If we need to do that, we should find a way to get after Dave Braine.
Who hires our ADs?
I like DRAD a lot but Braine not at all and Rice not much.
Curry for example was not ready to be a head coach just as Goff wasn’t.
I’d take poison before I’d hire long time UGA assistant Bill Lewis.
I don’t care how many buildings Rice got built.
Neither he nor Braine have a clue about what to look for in a head coach and what will work with the Tech fan base.

You can blame Dave Braine for being stuck with Paul Hewitt but Mrs Hewitt deserves a lot of blame for not letting him take his dream job at St Johns. She knows he is about to get that huge buy out and she can get her dream house and say “see ya suckas” on the way out of town next summer. Hopefully Fordham will get snowed in and we won’t have to suffer another embarrassing loss tomorrow afternoon. We have a chance to beat Wake Forest this year and finish 1-15 in the ACC. Next year we will have to play off campus but since no one will care, we can just play at Marist or Okeefe.
Baseball will be more of the same. We will get up to #10 in the rankings and then choke in the post season. Until Danny is forced to hire a pitching coach, instead of just giving jobs to his old college buddies, we will continue to choke.
I don’t expect much from the football team since they haven’t seemed to care about a bowl game in several years. They did look good dancing at the bowling alley though. Air Force is too disciplined and Tech has had no discipline all year and continue to make too many dumb mistakes. Air Force wins 37-24.

We alumni of UGA finally agree with the GT faithful. We on D are NO GOOD. We know it.

To put up 450 yds on UGA is no big deal. UGA’s D is no good.

Now, that is out of the way ……………….UGA WON that game. I conclude the GT is WORSE than UGA. Y’all could not defeat UGA ……………so y’all are no good. We won, so UGA is superior.
9-1 over 10 proves it. Richt OWNS CPJ and his “on the field coaching skills”. That is a joke, because we all know that 8 IS WORSE than to lose by 1.

What about all of your Rec Adm majors flunking out like Hill and Edwards???Sad that is.

The 4 that are not eligible to play for skipping curfew just spit in CPJ’s face. No respect for him. The wheels are coming off.

Enjoy Shoney’s at I-10 and University Blvd. UGA? Oh, we will be doing some fine dining and listening to some fine blues, baby.

UGA is bad on D and GT did run up around 435 yds on UGA’s D. So? Who won the game and how many games has UGA won in the last 10????

Now to business ,…………………. GT does offer a Liberal Arts curriculum now. That was added about 10 years ago and to deny that is folly. Park Management or whatever ………………the GT players usually do not get their diplomas, however. Yes, GT O linemen and one or two or three no name guys earn their degrees but the GT stars like the three that DUMPED GT last year and the one or two that are leaving this year and the 5 or 7 that are dumped or suspended for the Independence Bowl ……………..will not earn their diplomas. They are thugs.

How any of these kids get in any school is lost on me. UGA has had about three Rhodes Scholars in the last few years and one was a UGA ball player in my day ………………..Tommy Lawhorne, who also played for the Denver Broncos ………….. I think. I may be worng about that last one but he did earn the Rhodes.

What did Dwyer graduate in or Baybay or Burnett or Nesbitt or R Houston??? I read that DE Robert Hall graduated …………………..what is his dimploma for??? Whuppin up on girls???

I hope all the GT fans had a great Christmas and have a happy New Year.

There will be some interesting stories at GT this year, and I hope the AJC covers them. First, I’m starting to wonder about CPJ’s recruiting ability. It’s hard to tell how he is doing on offense because he needs a different type of player, but on defense it doesn’t look good. Second is this Hewitt fiasco. I would love to read a well researched article with all the facts about his contract and how GT can get out from under it. GT has great atmosphere for BB, and D-Rad needs to work some magic to get a real coach in there.

Finally, I hope fans of both schools will knock off the stupid sniping. It’s not the slightest bit entertaining for anyone with a brain and an interest in college football.

I sure get annoyed hearing Dave Braine blamed for the Hewitt fiasco. Unless I’m wrong, the Athletic Board and the President signed on to this absurdity, so there is where the real blame lies. Certainly Bliane’s legacy as the absolute worst AD in our history(unless one counts Coach Dodd) goes unchallenged but let’s put the blame where it really lies. Dan Rad has done an admirable job and I would hate to be in his place now. The only real question is whether he fires Hewitt going into the ACC schedule or he waits till the end. The vacant seats will send the clear message, even to Hewitt.

Not only did GT not win against UGA they will not win against AFA today.
Again defense will be the reason.

When Al Groh said it took two years to install the 3 – 4 he was apparently right on. The Bulldogs will attest to his correctness also.

Ok, I have been a season ticket holder for more years than I care to admit, and I am NOT going to renew next year. It is just too painful to watch this football team. Johnson better fire the special teams coach because they are far from special…how about especially awful. How many games have they cost us this season? At least three. The state of men’s sports (at least the two main ones) has reached a nadir not seen for a long time. Paul Hewitt has to be the worst game coach on the planet. It would be more enjoyable to undergo a root canal than to endure the train wreck that is his team on the court. This is depressing. I have been following GT sports since the mid 70’s and am an alumnus (class of ‘88). I doubt we could even beat UGA in chess right now. There is no excuse to losing to them in basketball in our arena. Furthermore, if we could run a two minute offense, we would have a three game losing streak over the nearly as pathetic dawgs. Oh well, I guess there is always next year….JOY!

My high school team at Woodward Academy could beat the Bumble Bees. Paul Johnson is worse than Marlboro Man Mark Wrecked….

Please don’t make so many negative remarks about a very disciplined, tough nosed service academy, when it is so very obvious, that GT is just the oposite. Excuses do not get it for GT anymore. The reason the service academies run the triple option is simple. They have weight, restrictions, and the job first at the academies is to prepare these young men for leadership, not the NFL. GT had the advantage for the first year over other colleges since few teams have seen the triple option and therefore did not know how to defend against it. Not so the last two years, and although the formations can switch around somewhat, the main point of the option is almost all run oriented. Fast defenses eat it up. The reason GT loses so often to UGA is the same reason UGA loses so often to Florida. The talent level is not so much different most of the time, it is simply the fact that it becomes a habit, or a habitual trend. You want to beat them so bad, you overplay your game and make stupid mistakes. I will admit that GT was the more talented of the two teams yesterday, but Air Force was more disciplined, better coached, and played their game. Gt on the other hand, came into the game, thinking easy win, we deserve a better bowl, and we can cruise to victory. They need to become better discliplined, play smarter, and get over their ego trip. 500 teams in the ACC are a dime a dozen. GT had better shape up, because Florida State is about to show them what dynasty is all about for the next few seasons anyway.

Any team that loses 6 consec bowl games should be banned from bowls for three years. No exclusions.
How long will Washington have to “learn on the job”? All coaches make the DUMB mistake of never playing their backup QB unless they are ahead by 20 or more points and Tech is the victim of such stupidity. Washington should have been getting 5-10 snaps per game all year so he could be ready. When losing to mediocre teams such as Kansas, Clemson, and Miami why would you stick with your #1 guy the entire game ? Bench his butt !!!
Our defense finally showed that they are awake and our offense finds a way to do nothing.
Lord, thank you for letting this season end. I now have a new nightmare to go with the ghosts of Chan Gailey and Reggie Ball who both continue to haunt me. The new ghost is the team of 2010.
