SEC Protecting Its Investment

The next time you see an SEC promo or public service announcement that is related to sportsmanship or conduct, you can pretty much laugh and change the channel.  All they are doing is playing lipservice to the notion that they care…

Why do I care?

Its simple really…their lack of willingness to discipline Nick Fairley leads directly to their inability to discipline the UGA players who left the bench during the brawl at the end of the UGA vs Auburn game.

They didn’t discipline late hitting, dirty playing, fight inducing Fairley because to do so would further hinder a Ted Roof led Auburn defense that already leaks like a sieve.  (GT fans can understand this…that defense cost Joe Hamilton the Heisman in 1999 and the Jackets a shot at a national title…)

And the SEC needs Auburn to beat Alabama because Auburn is the last (and only) chance that the SEC has at putting a team in the 2010 national title game.

So…since the SEC sat on its hands regarding Nick Fairley, they no longer have any capital with regards to dealing with all the UGA players who left the bench area during that brawl.

An Auburn fan board captured the details nicely…

Lets start with a quote of the NCAA rules:

NCAA Rule 9-4-5-1-c:

during either half, coaches or substitutes shall not leave their team area to participate in a fight, nor shall they participate in a fight in their team area.

PENALTY—15 yards from the succeeding spot, plus first down for Team B fouls if the first down is not in conflict with other rules. Disqualification for the remainder of the game and for the next game [S7, S27 or S38, and S47]. For fights that occur in the last game of a season, coaches and substitutes with eligibility remaining will serve fight-related suspensions during the first game of the next season for which they are eligible.

That’s right…disqualification for the remainder of the game and for the next game…

So what UGA players would have been at risk?  What UGA players left the bench area and should be suspended against GT?

Instigating player:
61, Ben Jones

Players on the field involved in the play:
3, Washuan Ealey
7, Orson Charles
8, A.J. Green
12, Tavarres King
14, Huston Mason
16, Kris Durham
61, Ben Jones
60, Clint Boiling
71, Cordy Glenn
77, Trinton Sturdivant
78, Josh Davis

Players on the field NOT involved in the play:
2, Brandon Boykin
5, Blake Sailors
6, Logan Gray
10, Jordan Love
13, Drew Butler
15, Marlon Brown
16, Josh Murray
17, Rantavious Wooten
20, Derek Owens
23, Jakar Hamilton
24, Ken Malcome
25, Vance Cuff
28, Israel Troupe
33, Chase Vasser
35, Michael Gilliard
37, Akeem Hebron
38, Marcus Dowtin
39, Dustin Royston
46, Alex Ogletree
47, Chad Gloer
48, Kosta Vavlas
50, Darryl Gamble
51, Akeem Dent
63, Chris Davis
64, Dallas Lee
70, A.J. Harmon
72, Kenarious Gates
81, Aron White
83, Cornelius Washington
85, Derrick Lott
86, Derek Rich
89, Bruce Figgins

Yup…that second list is all the guys who left the bench and who should be suspended based on NCAA rules…if the SEC had the “stones” to do it.

Don’t believe the list?

Check out the image at this link….UGA Players Leave Bench.

That second list of players “not involved in the play” is the list of guys who should be sitting out Tech vs UGA tomorrow.

But like I said earlier…the SEC is protecting its investment.

They desperately want Auburn to beat Alabama and go to the national title game.

And they desperately want UGA to gain bowl eligibility so that they can collect payouts there as well.

Its all about the almighty dollar in the SEC…sportsmanship has nothing to do with it.

Amusingly enough…I’m watching Auburn vs Alabama as I write this blog…Fairley has already been called for one personal foul that extended a Bama TD drive and the Tide is trying to make the score 24-0 midway through the second quarter.

The SEC’s best laid plans of putting Auburn in the national title game look to be hanging by a very slim thread and the Jackets will have a chance to knock UGA out of their bowl bid tomorrow as well.

Tomorrow I’ll be screaming “Go Jackets!” but today I’m feeling a little bit of “Roll Tide!”

Eh, I’m not exactly sold on this theory. Notice the rule states “coaches or substitutes shall not leave their team area to participate in a fight“. While I think it was wrong for the mutts to leave their sideline, the rule doesn’t apply to them because they didn’t actually fight anyone.

Also, if you’ve been keeping up with the Iron Bowl today, you’d notice that the refs are most certainly not selling out for Auburn. The unsportsmanlike penalty on Fairley after his big 3rd down sack may have been the worst penalty call I’ve seen all year.

I’m not really rooting for Bama, because knowing the BCS beating Auburn will jump Alabama right over everyone into the #2 slot or something.

Granted the SEC protects their investment, however this is about a pathetic effort as I have seen to point that out.

SO you when you lose by 30 to a 5-6 team you can go crying about how the whole team should be suspeneded? I do agree with you on Fairly, but a team has to be able to defend their players against a team of thugs with cheap shots. ROLL TIDE ROLL

November 26th, 2010

Innocent Bystander is correct; you’ve misread the rule. “During either half, coaches or substitutes shall not leave their team area to participate in a fight, nor shall they participate in a fight in their team area.” Under standard rules of legal interpretation (were this a legal question), as they’ve used the word “participate” in both sections, you have to treat the word as meaning the same thing throughout; you cannot assign it different meanings under different circumstances. Under your interpretation, were a fight to break out in the team area, the entire team would be suspended for being in that area. That’s also a silly conclusion about the SEC; I’ve never seen an entire team suspended, but I’ve seen many bench clearing scuffles outside of the SEC.

Oh I can’t wait to hear all the uga justification for being thugs. Actually we should be happy for it because a huge part of the richt problems are the fact they don’t have the ability to control their players. Again when the same coach who throws choke signs to opposing players calls another team trashy, then you know what kind of morons you are dealing with…

@ugaben81 – Actually it means UGA has no excuses since noone was suspended.

The Jackets are an underdog, on the road, without Nesbitt…but we’re already bowl eligible. Much less pressure on GT than there is on UGA..especially considering the coaching situations.

Tech people are pretty pathetic. Twist the words to suit their needs, typical. You guys should stick with numbers. I guess all the confidence at the beginning of the year, with your Heisman Trophy quarterback turned out to be a load of hooey. If there is a defence worse than Georgia, it is Tech. Nick Fairley has had 2 personal fouls all year. I imagine there are players on your Bug team that have had more than 2 fouls. Should the ACC discipline every one of them?

Oh and the flag against Fairley during the Bama game was for celebrating a (clean) sack. Even the sports analysts said it was a ticky-tack penalty and should have been a non-call.

SEC has no ethics or balls! I watched the Auburn/Alabama game and the unsportmanlike conduct penalty on Farley was a farce. What did he do that any self centered player hasn’t already done this year with no flag/penalty? Skipped? Beat his chest?

But this brings me to Auburn’s quarterback. With a theft and lieing charge/conviction and 2—yes 2– school cheating accusations / “convictions”at UF, How do they justify letting a thief and liar transfer to another SEC school? Oh it’s the ratings!

And as for the supposed rule on loss of play if one leaves the bench, why are we amazed no dicipline has been issued? I guess if you whine enough, the SEC will single out a player.

It’s the same thing with the Bruce Pearl penalty…he must miss 8 SEC BBgames, but he can coach any out of conference game until the last applicable SEC game. So we’ll disciline you, but not to the detriment of the SEC out-of -conference record!

Yeah, the SEC is an alledgedly leading conference, but add having low standards wasn’t what college sports are about!

November 26th, 2010
7:24 pm

I’m torn, I want to pull for GT over the whining mutts, but I can’t stand listening to someone from the ACC posing as a legitimate college football commentator. Fairley got one personal foul. ONE. There were a couple of close calls, but the SEC doesn’t discipline players for incidents that didn’t even draw flags. Seriously GT people, shut this idiot up. You need to focus on getting to a bowl and beating the pups. Save the SEC envy for a year when you’re more competitive.

What a disappointing flop by Alabama today. This puts the NCAA in a very bad position- they will have a UCS/Reggie Bush deja vu when independent investigators- because the NCAA is gonad-less- prove that Cam Newton was paid to attend AU.

Newton and Fairley are the best offensive and defensive players in the country, respectively, but I would rather lose than have either of them in red & black.

Yes Georgia got beat by a punk Auburn team with no class and the ringleader is their head coach who was cheering on the sidelines. I played my high school football in Summerville South Carolina, and if I had played like number 90 my football career would have been over. I was taught to play the game clean and fair and not intentionally try and hurt another player. You win and lose games and the lessons learned carry on in your life. I will say this, Georgia is not perfect and they had penalties, but not like number 90 of Auburn.

So the UGA players should have gotten tossed for sticking up for their teamates? No. Thats what sports is about…. Nothing wrong with how they reacted to the auburn knuckleheads.

I don’t normally comment on Tech beat or fan blogs, but this has got to be the whiniest post ever. Yeah, Georgia’s players were on the field, but there was no Clemson-S. Carolina style brawl, and the refs were able to get things under control. No harm, no foul. Honestly, it was their fault for the game even getting to that point– both teams were snipping at each other well beyond what is “sportsmanlike” and both should have been warned.

I’m not going to disagree with you for saying that money controls college football, but at the heart of it there’s still so much more passion and excitement on a college football field that I don’t even know how anyone can possibly look forward to Sundays over Saturdays.

college fans are pathetically biased. after all of the crying about fairley, i watched the entire replay to see how “dirty” he was. y’all need to get over your whining. the only time i saw players intentionally try to hurt someone was when georgia chop-blocked the fairley kid. it’s a tough sport, not for cry-babies. your QB is going to take some shots, he’s not wearing a pink skirt. y’all are afraid of the big scary man, you big sissies. now he’s getting penalties for breathing on the QB. as for you people saying you wouldn’t want him on your team, you’re stupid, and biased, and you have sour grapes because your team lost. i would LOVE it if the falcons drafted him. your “red and black” committed the worst act of sportsmanship i have seen in years against florida a few years ago, so until you get a new coach, you have absolutely no credibility in any discussion about sportsmanship. that was poor sportsmanship against auburn when you intentionally went after fairley after it was obvious that he was being blocked into your QB. then your whole team left the bench when his teammates took up for him. just mad because you were losing. pitiful. fairley, get away from these stupid college guys as fast as you can. the falcons want you!

First: The ONLY reason this article was written is becuase of the up coming game this saturday. Leave it to Tech to look for an excuse. “If the SEC would have suspended it players, we would have won”. I can already hear it now.
Second: If your QB was hit late play after play with the intent to injure him, your team would be coming off the bench too. Fairley is nothing but a punk who will have his face smashed in when he gets to the NFL. Let him hit an NFL QB late and see what the O Line does to him!

Seriously Boggs? Has any team ever had 2/3 of their team suspended for running on the field during a bench clearing brawl? It has never happened, of course, because that would be a complete and utter over reaction and frankly stupid. Just like this particular entry in your blog.

It’s weasles like you tha give Tech fans a bad name.

How irrelevant is Georgia Tech? If this were a UGA blog it would have at least 10 pages by now. And the majority of the posters on this blog are from SEC schools. Pathetic.

The Auburn team may have no losses but they also have a total lack of character and it shows starting with the coaches and then with the players on the field. I don’t care how good a player Newton is, his actions at Florida and now show a total lack of character which I thought was also a part of Heisman consideration.

I would expect writing like this to appear in on page 9 or 10 of the comments section, not as the actual ajc article.

I’d like to recognize all the UGA fans for their cleverly veiled efforts at profanity. Keep reinforcing those stereotypes!
