SEC Protecting Its Investment

The next time you see an SEC promo or public service announcement that is related to sportsmanship or conduct, you can pretty much laugh and change the channel.  All they are doing is playing lipservice to the notion that they care…

Why do I care?

Its simple really…their lack of willingness to discipline Nick Fairley leads directly to their inability to discipline the UGA players who left the bench during the brawl at the end of the UGA vs Auburn game.

They didn’t discipline late hitting, dirty playing, fight inducing Fairley because to do so would further hinder a Ted Roof led Auburn defense that already leaks like a sieve.  (GT fans can understand this…that defense cost Joe Hamilton the Heisman in 1999 and the Jackets a shot at a national title…)

And the SEC needs Auburn to beat Alabama because Auburn is the last (and only) chance that the SEC has at putting a team in the 2010 national title game.

So…since the SEC sat on its hands regarding Nick Fairley, they no longer have any capital with regards to dealing with all the UGA players who left the bench area during that brawl.

An Auburn fan board captured the details nicely…

Lets start with a quote of the NCAA rules:

NCAA Rule 9-4-5-1-c:

during either half, coaches or substitutes shall not leave their team area to participate in a fight, nor shall they participate in a fight in their team area.

PENALTY—15 yards from the succeeding spot, plus first down for Team B fouls if the first down is not in conflict with other rules. Disqualification for the remainder of the game and for the next game [S7, S27 or S38, and S47]. For fights that occur in the last game of a season, coaches and substitutes with eligibility remaining will serve fight-related suspensions during the first game of the next season for which they are eligible.

That’s right…disqualification for the remainder of the game and for the next game…

So what UGA players would have been at risk?  What UGA players left the bench area and should be suspended against GT?

Instigating player:
61, Ben Jones

Players on the field involved in the play:
3, Washuan Ealey
7, Orson Charles
8, A.J. Green
12, Tavarres King
14, Huston Mason
16, Kris Durham
61, Ben Jones
60, Clint Boiling
71, Cordy Glenn
77, Trinton Sturdivant
78, Josh Davis

Players on the field NOT involved in the play:
2, Brandon Boykin
5, Blake Sailors
6, Logan Gray
10, Jordan Love
13, Drew Butler
15, Marlon Brown
16, Josh Murray
17, Rantavious Wooten
20, Derek Owens
23, Jakar Hamilton
24, Ken Malcome
25, Vance Cuff
28, Israel Troupe
33, Chase Vasser
35, Michael Gilliard
37, Akeem Hebron
38, Marcus Dowtin
39, Dustin Royston
46, Alex Ogletree
47, Chad Gloer
48, Kosta Vavlas
50, Darryl Gamble
51, Akeem Dent
63, Chris Davis
64, Dallas Lee
70, A.J. Harmon
72, Kenarious Gates
81, Aron White
83, Cornelius Washington
85, Derrick Lott
86, Derek Rich
89, Bruce Figgins

Yup…that second list is all the guys who left the bench and who should be suspended based on NCAA rules…if the SEC had the “stones” to do it.

Don’t believe the list?

Check out the image at this link….UGA Players Leave Bench.

That second list of players “not involved in the play” is the list of guys who should be sitting out Tech vs UGA tomorrow.

But like I said earlier…the SEC is protecting its investment.

They desperately want Auburn to beat Alabama and go to the national title game.

And they desperately want UGA to gain bowl eligibility so that they can collect payouts there as well.

Its all about the almighty dollar in the SEC…sportsmanship has nothing to do with it.

Amusingly enough…I’m watching Auburn vs Alabama as I write this blog…Fairley has already been called for one personal foul that extended a Bama TD drive and the Tide is trying to make the score 24-0 midway through the second quarter.

The SEC’s best laid plans of putting Auburn in the national title game look to be hanging by a very slim thread and the Jackets will have a chance to knock UGA out of their bowl bid tomorrow as well.

Tomorrow I’ll be screaming “Go Jackets!” but today I’m feeling a little bit of “Roll Tide!”

Ted Roof didn’t cost you a national title in 1999. The fact that Joe Hamilton and half of the football team was academically ineligible cost you the national title. You should be thankful because Joe Hamilton would have had to give back the Heisman.

Tech blog has to bash the SEC and UGA to get some hits on its blog. That’s pretty typical for a Techie.

Dear Chris Boggs,

Dude, grow up and move on. What a waste of good space. If you cared about fair play, you’d have complained to the SEC yourself with this information. But you’re a “jacket” fan who’s eating sour grapes. Enjoy those grapes, man. In the words of Dean Wormer, “Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son.”

Cheer for the jackets if they’re your team and stop wasting your time whining about the SEC. You’ll never make it there. And little Chris said, Wah Wah Wah, all the way home.

The players coming off the bench thing could be a stretch, but what about the 5 UGa football players that threw punches in the Aub game? That was never even mentioned.

Yes Georgia got beat by a punk Auburn team with no class and the ringleader is their head coach who was cheering on the sidelines. I played my high school football in Summerville South Carolina, and if I had played like number 90 my football career would have been over. I was taught to play the game clean and fair and not intentionally try and hurt another player. You win and lose games and the lessons learned carry on in your life. I will say this, Georgia is not perfect and they had penalties, but not like number 90 of Auburn.

Did Boggs even graduate from high school. What a cry baby and pathetic so called piece of journalism. GA had every right to defend themselves against a bunch of overzealous Auburn
uncontrolled emotional players who don’t have integrity. Auburn is overrated and Tech doesn’t have a chance. The best move they will make tomorrow is the one they will do on the toliet in the morning

Dude, mwhat kool-aid are you drinking? I’d highly suggest you stop drinking it. It’s really damaging to your brain…as if you had one.

@Road Scholar:

Are you serious?

“But this brings me to Auburn’s quarterback. With a theft and lieing charge/conviction and 2—yes 2– school cheating accusations / “convictions”at UF, How do they justify letting a thief and liar transfer to another SEC school? Oh it’s the ratings!”

The charges were dismissed, and the cheating accussations were basically dropped when he transferred to Blinn. That’s kind of like what happened when Nathan Deal resigned from Congress to run for governor. The ethics investigation was dropped. That sure as heck didn’t stop him from getting elected.

techies, don’t you have some homework to do?. UGA fans-did that burn your butts when they annouced the Monday after the Auburn/Georgia game that Nick Fairly was selected as a finalist for defensive player of the year? Your continuing to whimper about Nick Fairley just makes you sad.

Difference between tech and ga fans. I wanted tech to have nesbitt so there would be no excuses. Tech wants us to have to play people out of the stands so that they can get an easy W.

Your article you just wrote is funny. I am a tech fan, but give me a break….. alot of people that posted on here are absoutley right. Your whinning about UGA, and I know your obsessed with hating UGA. Auburn acted pretty childish at the end of the UGA game, but holy crap after beating bama the way they did they deserve to go play for the crystal ball as long as they beat the chickens.

So the UGA players should have gotten tossed for sticking up for their teamates? No. Thats what sports is about…. Nothing wrong with how they reacted to the auburn knuckleheads.

Hopefully the ducks win this game and the civil war next week, because i would love to see a east vs west game out in tempe for the crystal ball.

I don’t normally comment on Tech beat or fan blogs, but this has got to be the whiniest post ever. Yeah, Georgia’s players were on the field, but there was no Clemson-S. Carolina style brawl, and the refs were able to get things under control. No harm, no foul. Honestly, it was their fault for the game even getting to that point– both teams were snipping at each other well beyond what is “sportsmanlike” and both should have been warned.

I’m not going to disagree with you for saying that money controls college football, but at the heart of it there’s still so much more passion and excitement on a college football field that I don’t even know how anyone can possibly look forward to Sundays over Saturdays.

Let’s have a good game tomorrow and Go Dawgs!

Looked to me that the sec tried their best to give it to alabama….protecting fairley? wow, did you watch the game? Auburn earned everything they got, tech would have boarded the bus and left at halftime. Auburn has heart, Tech has shown no heart this year….And CPJ has admitted as much. Maybe write about that?

You’re clearly mistaken. None of those players participated in a fight and they were on the sideline. The officials did kick two Auburn players out because of their behavior. Fairly should have also been kicked out.

college fans are pathetically biased. after all of the crying about fairley, i watched the entire replay to see how “dirty” he was. y’all need to get over your whining. the only time i saw players intentionally try to hurt someone was when georgia chop-blocked the fairley kid. it’s a tough sport, not for cry-babies. your QB is going to take some shots, he’s not wearing a pink skirt. y’all are afraid of the big scary man, you big sissies. now he’s getting penalties for breathing on the QB. as for you people saying you wouldn’t want him on your team, you’re stupid, and biased, and you have sour grapes because your team lost. i would LOVE it if the falcons drafted him. your “red and black” committed the worst act of sportsmanship i have seen in years against florida a few years ago, so until you get a new coach, you have absolutely no credibility in any discussion about sportsmanship. that was poor sportsmanship against auburn when you intentionally went after fairley after it was obvious that he was being blocked into your QB. then your whole team left the bench when his teammates took up for him. just mad because you were losing. pitiful. fairley, get away from these stupid college guys as fast as you can. the falcons want you!

steampile is probably full of dawg crap. but if it’s true, then it is exactly what is wrong with the economy. people like SP hiring and firing based on trivial personal issues like cheering for ga tech, just because a team of 18 to 22 year olds beat your school, instead of based on merit and job performance. that’s un-american, and did harm to your company. you college fans can be so stupid. your story sounds completely made up. i hope it is.

First: The ONLY reason this article was written is becuase of the up coming game this saturday. Leave it to Tech to look for an excuse. “If the SEC would have suspended it players, we would have won”. I can already hear it now.
Second: If your QB was hit late play after play with the intent to injure him, your team would be coming off the bench too. Fairley is nothing but a punk who will have his face smashed in when he gets to the NFL. Let him hit an NFL QB late and see what the O Line does to him!
As far as this weekend… GO DAWGS!!!!!

Chris Boggs, so you want the majority of the UGA team suspended before the Tech game? Hmmm. Sounds like you might have a hidden agenda. lol. Are you really that scared that your Jackets are going to get a beatdown? Thats pathetic.

Seriously Boggs? Has any team ever had 2/3 of their team suspended for running on the field during a bench clearing brawl? It has never happened, of course, because that would be a complete and utter over reaction and frankly stupid. Just like this particular entry in your blog.

It’s weasles like you tha give Tech fans a bad name.

The Auburn team may have no losses but they also have a total lack of character and it shows starting with the coaches and then with the players on the field. I don’t care how good a player Newton is, his actions at Florida and now show a total lack of character which I thought was also a part of Heisman consideration.
