Tech Loss A Tale of Two Fumbles

A Tale of Two Fumbles

Sure, ultimately, the Hurricanes simply beat the Yellow Jackets in all phases of the game en route to a 35-10 victory.

But I thought the Tech hopes in this game hinged and turned on two fumbles that occured while the game was still in doubt:

  1. The fumbled kick return that GT recovered deep in Miami territory, only to be told that “forward progress” had been stopped before loss of possession.  Rather than possession in the shadow of Miami’s goal post, the Jackets wound up on defense.
  2. The fumbled pitch on the Miami 6 yard line while the score was 21-10.  A touchdown there would have made it 21-17.  Instead Miami marched 84 yards on 11 plays and made the score 28-10 to put things out of reach.

Those two fumbles are a great example of the breaks that just haven’t gone our way in 2010…breaks that DID go our way in 2009 en route to the ACC title game.

The Good

  • Perfect Weather…mid 60s…cloudless sky…no wind…one of “those days” that reminds you why you love college football game days.
  • 308 yards rushing by the Jackets with big contributions from Tevin Washington and Orwin Smith.
  • Washington completed 7 passes to 5 different players and looked pretty good overall accounting for 241 all purpose yards.
  • Kudos to Kevin Cone!
  • The Jackets were near 50% (7 of 15) on third down conversion, which was an improvement from previous efforts this season.
  • The Jackets maintained a 6 minute time of possession advantage…typically a stat that leads to a win.

The Bad

  • While the offense played well enough to win, with a few breaks going the other way, the defense regressed from the effort at Virginia Tech giving up 507 yards of offense to a true freshman QB who was making his first start on the road.
  • The offensive line continues to struggle with blocking.
  • We still have some wide receivers who struggle to make plays on catchable balls.

The Ugly

  • How does Leonard Hankerson, the best receiver in the conference, find himself alone and uncovered right after the Jackets have scored to pull within striking distance?

What’s Next?

Well…next…we play 3-7 (1-5) Duke at home. And we need to win to get bowl eligible.

The Blue Devils have no running game worth mentioning and only have wins over Elon, Navy, and Virginia this season.

But…they have taken Boston College and Maryland to the wire and played Miami tougher than we just did.

Sean Renfree (a GT commitment before Gailey was replaced with Johnson) has thrown for 2200+ yards and 12 touchdowns as a sophomore.

The Jackets will need to stop the run, force Renfree to throw, and capitalize on his mistakes…Renfree has thrown 15 INTs this season.

Go Jackets!

Beat Duke!

You pretty much summed up everything, Mr. Boggs. Kudos.

Hopefully we can bring it next week. Shouldn’t have problems stopping a non-existent running game. Then again, we shouldn’t have had problems with a freshman QB making his first ever road start, as you said.

Go Jackets!

Got to stop getting out buts handed to us on the O and D lines. QB’s cant set their feet because as soon as they come out of their drop they have to dodge the rush and most times its more than one guy. That is because they are too used to diving low all the time to block. Need OL coach to teach them to stand the DL up and engage them. It wont take long for the Rbs to be by them and it will open holes instead of having 300 lb’ers laying in the holes. On the perimeter those blocks are fine it is out in space within the line it should not happen. Stop playing Hill he cannot catch the ball and it has gotten in his head! On 4th or 3rd and 1 use the dive off guard and tackle gap to move the sticks then you can run the edges. Stop being cute on the play calling and move the chains!

Go JACKETS!

You guys really wantto actlike 2 fumbles is the reason you got your butts handed to you by a team who is not good on the road and was minus their starting quarterback??

that’s funny.

I know you guys look at UGA’s record, and think they are down and out. But they are going to wipe the ground with you and your jittery backup quarterback. And if you think you can stop their Offense, you need to take off the pee pee yellow glasses.

UGA will not only knock our jocks off but they’ll hand us our heads on a silver platter. Our D and O lines suck. They get man handled by almost every team we play. My only saving grace for this team is that they’re a young bunch. Our offense is pretty good they have several good young running backs . Couple that with their young QB’s the offense should be ok. Whats going to make or break this team is the development of both lines. I just hope the young D linemen Shawn Greene, Denzel McCoy, and J.C. Lanier come on strong next year and Izan Cross gets even better. Our D rides on their shoulders. As far as the O line they are a young group. I do see them getting better. Its tough for RS Fresh. or true Fresh. to be successful at this level. Stay thirsty my friends. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO TECH.

Dasher I love tech but you are so right. I see UGA beating us 48-10 or worse. I’m a realist. UGA should have a much better record. A play here or there and they would be in the SEC championship game. Their only problem is UGA’s D doesn’t show up every game. I stick with my prediction I made a month ago UGA will play for the National Championship in 2012. And I am a Tech fan. My favorite Tech player was Rock Perdoni, All American nose tackle ‘69. Reading an article about him is what made me a Tech fan. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO TECH.

we may not beat duke and we have zero chance against georgia unless a falling satellite crushes all their starters as they leave the locker room. georgia went on the road and gave a good effort against the #2 team in the country…we got crushed at home by an unranked team playing their 4th-string QB.

The fumble at the 6 killed us. Instead of keeping it close with a TD, we gave it back and they marched right down to score again. The things that bothered me the most is that #17 did not seem to make an attempt to fall on the ball and keep the drive alive, and that CPJ did not seem to get after him as he came off the field????? Seems that I remember a punter in the spring game drop a ball and not jump on it, and CPJ was all over him….yet a critical game, at a critical time, we do not jump on a fumble that we EASILY could have recovered, and the guy gets a tap on the butt as he comes off the field????? Has CPJ lost his edge?

I have no confidence that this team can pull together anything to win either of our remaining games. UGA will hang 50+ on this defense and may add to that total on special teams. Washington and Sims are doing all they can in a tough situation. Anthony Allen is playing hard. Outside of that, it’s hard to find positives.

reebok and nuke80 were two guys prior to the VT game indicating soo many points the loss would be….

PJ has stated he hates losing. The O is his baby and he thinks the world of it…just ask him. The D is AG. Johnson already stated he hates losing (did I say that already) and he certainly did pull the trigger on the D coord last year. So, should Al be worried?

A few weeks ago, prior to playing Clemson, there was an article in here about our next 3 big games; Clemson, VT and Miami. I said we’d be 0-3 after them and everyone disagreed. GT fans – get your head out of the sand. There’s a reason we lost to Kansas. This team is below average at best. Sad isn’t it considering we were 9-1 at this time last year. Typical Tech – can never sustain anything or be a consistent winning program. Why is it Ohio State can every year???

Somebody up there said Allen looked good for getting 97 yards. He sure didn’t look good last year, only Dwyer and Joshua did. And this year he’s only scored on good runs during Homecoming. This year when given the ball 3 times in a row, he couldn’t make a 1st down, the Tech tries to catch VT offsides, didn’t work, march backwards 5 yards, then Barrick is the one who jumps offsides. VT had it easy when Allen ran it on the same run 3 times in a row, a poor call by CPJ. Tech has ugly uniforms this year and had the same last year. They don’t pass, they snap the ball at the line of scrimmage under the center instead of a shotgun at times or every time, and a good D line grabs Joshua at the line and immediately tackles him. NC State only snapped the ball at the line of scrimmage near or in the red zone, and it worked. Some teams this year wear two different colored helmets to entertain. Tech only wears the gold ones. When I was at Tech they wore white for a couple of years, and have for only one game since, when Gailey’s team played Groh’s Virginia team. Tech’s program is not Div 1 caliber. Their football program needs to drop out of Div 1 and play teams like SC State, Georgia Southern, Elon, Charleston Southern, Jacksonville State and Furman, who they lost to under Curry at BD Stadium. Recall the giant holes SC State opened up in our D line this year? Tech might even want to start playing Georgia State each year.

CPJ’s magic wand is for Tech to wear the EXACT SAME white jerseys from three seasons ago when they went to the Chick-Fil-A bowl, EXACT SAME white pants from that year, and white helmets. When they wear dark, I recommend old gold jerseys, same white pants, and gold helmets. If they do well that year, wear the same EVERY year until they don’t do well. Pass more, like Joe Hamilton did, and maybe hire him as the Offensive Coordinator(or new coach). Hire somebody like Pat Swilling as the Defensive Coordinator, or maybe Phillipe Claybrooks.

I question their toughness and desire. They just are not aggressive and let the other team set tempo. There is something amiss for Cooper Taylor to just leave and the defense to look out of place, out of gas, and out of answers. Somewhere cancer is growing and needs to be cut out or maybe there is simply a lack of ability. I know this, if we lose to UGA the last thing I want to hear is that “they wanted it more than we did”. How did we show heart and character that turned into wins with walkons and underclassmen and now with experience we look lost?

Yeah, FALL on the fumble Orwin should have done! Score there and it’s 21-17.

But, just like when GT drove it down UM’s throat to open the 3rd qtr cutting the deficit to 14-10 and maybe taking momentum, I can’t believe that GT wouldn’t have given up ANOTHER easy TD, and down by 11 again, 28-17. It’s been this way all year!! Clemson, VT, NCST, Kansas. The D can’t sustain any “mo” whatsoever!

So Durham & Barnhart
Just said on the radio that the SEC will not Suspend ANY UGA player that broke the rules in the Fight and Rushing the Field during the Auburn v UGA game.
The SEC is a JOKE. They make rules and don’t even act like they matter.
UGA quit whinning about AUBRUN breaking the RULES and going after your QB unless you want Most of your starting O and most of your starting D to have to sit the TECH game. You had too many players break the rules rushing the field.
UGA fans will love the TECH game. It kicks at 7:45 on ESPN. Thank God I don’t go to Athens anymore. All the DRUNK UGA fans are the worst. Don’t even think there is another SEC teams fans that are as CLASSLESS as DRUNK DAWGS.

We should beat Duke because they do not run the football well. I admit that UGA’s offense is very potent but remember that they have not beaten anyone of substance. They lost to Colorado (with AJ Greene I believe), who is not much better than Kansas. We have a chance if we can limit our mistakes (unlikely). We give our opponents way to many second chances on offense because of stupid mistakes. That is how UGA lost a lot of games last year. They recovered their fumbles in their game with us (unlike most games in 2009) and won.. Their defense is not very good either. After the Auburn game I never want to hear any more comments about us chop blocking.

I don’t know about you others, but I am so tired of the 3-4 defense. It is designed to stop a pro team that runs occassionally just to keep the defense honest, but does not expect to gain anything with it. The pass is their offense. We’ve seen a little improvement in pass defense, but you can run all day against GT. I don’t understand why anyone passes against them. I, too, worry about Duke, and have no expectations of beating Georgia.

How can any Tech fan put a positive spin on the end of this season. Beating Duke means nothing but a low class meaningless bowl. Georgia will kick us again, remember Johhson states the Georgia game does not define Tech’s season. Gailey’s players are gone after this season. Gailey could recruit, could not coach! Teams have adjusted to Johnson’s offense, but he has not and will not adjust. Unfortunately it will take three years of misery before he is fired. Not being negative, just honest!!!!

yjs’01 says beat Duke and earn a bid to a meaningless bowl; I would not be at all surprised if we lose to Duke, and no gift bowl for a team that lost to NC State, VT, Kansas, Clemson and Miami; remember how State man-handled Tech with their pro baseball player cube?; what uniforms from this year would fans be willing to try to see Tech wear at a bowl- any?; uniforms CPJ has a problem with, and it’s called no short term memory from his 1st year of white and old gold got an “A” in that course from the Tech Athletic Association; losing short term memory is what happens to pot smokers on pot sometimes; CPJ needs to be given some bloodwork rewuired by the AA to see if he has any THC in his blood this year; and the Georgia game is a coin toss, but I would have to give the nod to Georgia because of their side stripes being multicolored, while Tech’s are extra wide, long, one-colored and unstreamlined-looking, clown-like looking, like Sad Sack’s fireworks and peacan logs tourist stop down on coast Hwy 17 just south of Savannah- sad team, Sad Sack, boo hoo
