Tech Loses Gutsy Effort Against Hokies

Live First Half Thoughts

The Jackets lead at the half 14-7 and make no mistake…the Hokies haven’t stopped us all night.

We’ve stopped ourselves!

The mental mistakes began on the fourth down during our third drive.  Only needed about 6 inches, which is pretty much a gimme, but we had an offensive tackle move early.  Rather than extend the drive and ownership of the football we end up having to punt.  Luckily the defense stepped up and got the ball back.

Then on the next series we have a penalty on second down that puts us off schedule again.  We end up punting.  This time special teams bails us out by forcing and recovering a fumble.

Then we get third and goal at the VT six yard line (following the fumble recovery) and we get cute and try to throw the ball.  It gets picked off and Nesbitt gets hurt trying to make the tackle.  I can understand “playing to win” but this was a situation where “playing to win” would have been keeping the ball on the ground on third down and kicking the field goal on fourth, if it was needed.  That would have made the score 17-7 and we’d be sitting on a two score lead.

A two score lead on the road against Tyrod Taylor is huge!  One big play wouldn’t have been enough to beat us if we’d kicked that field goal…

The Hokies will get possession to start the third quarter and the game will be decided by two factors…

  1. Can the Jackets defense continue to hold the line after playing a pretty good first half?
  2. Can Nesbitt return to lead the GT offense?  Its painfully obvious that the Hokies cannot stop our running game right now, but is this really the environment that you want for Tevin Washington’s first real test?

14 points will NOT win this game…we’ll need to put more on the board in the second half.

Our ACC repeat title hopes still hang in the balance…

Final Thoughts At The End

Well…if we don’t lose Nesbitt in this game we very likely beat the Hokies by two or three scores.

That’s not sour grapes.  That’s fact in my opinion.

The Hokies had no answer for Nesbitt and the offense moved at will when he was in the game.

And then even without Nesbitt on the field, the defense still played well enough to give us a chance while Tevin Washington got things sorted out.

You can hang this loss on a few coaching decisions, false starts, and a special teams gaffe:

  • Throwing the ball on the VT six yard line resulted in a INT and Nesbitt injury rather than a FG and a two score lead on the road.
  • Going for it on fourth down at midfield cost the Jackets valuable field position.  Why not trust your D, which is playing well at that point!
  • “Special” Teams gives up a 90 yard TD return after a great game tying drive was engineered by Washington.
  • Six or seven false starts consistently put our offense behind schedule and in long yardage situations.

In the end, this loss means our hopes of a repeat ACC title have ended and Nesbitt may be injured and out for more than just one half of football.

But on the bright side, the Jackets showed some real life and grit on defense and Tevin Washington throws a really nice, catchable ball.

Go Jackets!

Great job by Tevin coming into the most hostile environment in the ACC and nearly pulling off an upset. His passes looked crisp. He looked more comfortable as the game progressed.

Tevin’s future as a Jacket looks bright. Now we get him some work, win out, and roll into next season ready to win the ACC.

Chris, I totally agree with everything you said. No matter HOW GOOD the defense is playing you don’t put that kind of pressure on them by not punting on the 50. On the 6 yard line and we are throwing a pass on third down? With Joshua’s completion ratio? We should have run the ball up the middle and left a nice field goal for our kicker. ESPECIALLY, because they were getting the ball to start the 2nd half. The way we were moving the ball, is still no excuse for not punting and throwing a pass, when its not needed. I know coach is calling the plays, but knowing when to punt and when to pass is part of the game called FOOTBALL. The movement penalties, I understand because of the noise and the line not hearing. The B-back penalties of leaning forward to quick, lets you know who was getting the ball those and not very smart. Would love to see them work with Washington some in the shotgun. By the way, great job by Rodney J. on the pitch and broken play. I think he was going to throw to Washington but he never got out of the backfield.
I was VERY PROUD how our defense played, but not to thrilled with the play calling.
I enjoy watching CPJ take a defense apart and still back him all the way … NOT MATTER WHAT.

man – why can’t we run a quick slant on the last play? Melton was wide open til we tried to fade it into the back corner of the endzone?

quick slant and we score or at the very least 1st and goal from the one with a timeout left

Can’t understand why anyone wants to play for Paul Johnson. Was watching the replay of the game and he was over there chewing the kickers butt after the VT kickoff return for a TD. The guy is a first class jerk and ego maniac. That is what got T. Bowden fired at Clemson and it will likely happen to him at GT.

A very tough loss.

GT was O-W-N-I-N-G VT until Nesbitt was injured.

So many stupid mistakes:
1. Blair KO out-of-bounds
2. Sweeting trying to run the INT out from deep in the endzone.
3. So many false starts of offense.
4. Blair with poor KO that ended with VT TD.

However………………………………………………..

The MAC-DADDY MISTAKE was CPJ’s decision to
throw on 3rd & 6 from VT 6 yard line in late 2nd Qtr.

The GAME…The ACC title shot…Nesbitt…and perhaps The Season…

…were all lost on that ONE SINGLE play.

Arrogantly & stupid beyond description.

Our kicker had a very bad night and quite frankly he needed his butt chewed out. The kick was suppose to go to the side not in the middle. That and kicking out of bounds gets you chewed out. Johnson does not mince words or stand for mediocrity. If the kicker was not capable of better I doubt there would have been a problem. Understand where GT football is now and where we were for the last decade before. I can handle seeing a player getting his butt chewed out. Like the fire. Sure Johnson is arrogant and probably a sob but so was just about every other real good coach. Bear Bryant, Woody Hayes, et al would make Johnson look like choir boy.

T3….it wasn’t the decision that was bad it was who caught it or the fact it wasn’t thrown away. Seriously dude. Are you not going to at least call a play that has a chance of getting to the end-zone? VT is stacking the box. If you run there is a 99% chance you are stopped and have to kick a field goal. At least with a pass you have a shot at a TD especially on the road and if it misses you kick the chip shot. Sure it was intercepted but that was all on Nesbitt not Johnson. Who’s to say that if they had run the ball they wouldn’t have fumbled? Still not a bad call just bad unfortunate result. That happens but a senior QB has to make a better decision.

Yep, our season is now officially over. My gimmicky high school offense that is light years ahead of it’s time worked for about the first 10 minutes, then it just ran out of gas and magic. But on the brightside our defense looked good for a change. But yeah, looks like we’re going to have to fight just to make it back to our rightful postseason home of the Smurf Bowl.

we have a first down-no one was on the center and no linebacker in the gap even!

I think UNC moves to front of ACC next year. With new word out that UNC Chancellor Thorp says there is no evidence of misconduct on part of BD, I get the feeling that UNC football (recruiting) is actually going to benefit in the end because, other than ABC’ers (anybody but Carolina), there is a lot of sentiment for that program. It has always had charisma, just needed someone like a Mack Brown or a BD to lead it. UNC is currently ranked 12 in recruiting for 2011, and if no sanctions (or light sanctions) will be handed down, I think UNC recruiting will only get better. Many kids are just waiting to see what happens.

Love to see all of the UGA trolls masquerading as Techies on this blog. Guess it’s more fun that talking about your 5 loss team. No true tech fan is down on Paul Johnson as a coach. Sometimes he makes a call that temporarily infuriates me, but I do not doubt him as a coach. He won ACC Coach of the Year in his first two seasons as our coach. That’s pretty amazing in a BCS conference.

@ Tech Teacher,

Did you really just call it a “BCS conference?” You do realize HALF of that conference last year finished the regular season at .500 or worse. Tech simply backed into the conference title since all the real teams are still pitifully bad. Nevermind the fact UGA has just as many BCS wins as the entire ACC combined. So winning coach of the year in the ACC is kind of like being the fastest turtle, skinniest kid at fat camp, take your pick, winner.

Washington is not a good passer, he way underthrew the big play ball down the field in the 4th and got lucky that it was caught at all, 9 out of 10 of those will be picked or knokced away. We are all screwed with Nesbitt gone, and I give PJ 2 more years of running this thing into t he groud before its time to switch back to a tranditonal offensive style. And our recruiting sucks because none of the good players in the state want to play for a gimmick offense that wont get your draft stock up for the nfl. Am I the only person who isnt a sunshine pumper for GT, the team is on the decline already and everyone else in the ACC has caught up to defending us.

Hind sight 20/20 people… CPJ great coach who goes for it, I like that mentality and remember it’s that mentality that got GT an ACC championship last year.

However, why didn’t Blair kick it OUT of BOUNDS on the kick-off VT runs back for TD. Oh wait, hind sight 20/20. You can play this game forever, you annoying negative claim to be Tech fans and those loyal MUTTS that are on this blog.

There are no moral victories. Punt the ball – I actually thought about a quick kick on 3rd down. Why not – that is CPJ’s style. Bottom line, we should have won. No excuses or “they played their guts out” or “Tevin was better than expected” or anything else changes that. With Nesbit out, they were on the ropes, the crowd was quiet, the defense was dominating, and it was 4th down. PUNT!!!!! That single play changed everything and ruined the season – hello Weedeater bowl – I can’t wait.

It seems we have a few here that have totally forgotten how VT adjusted at the half and ran the ball right down our throats and controlled the clock in the 2nd half. VT won the 2nd half and I really don’t think Nesbit would have made any difference. In fact it might have been worse. Nesbit couldn’t ever have made some of the throws that Washington did.

With FSU’s loss today it seems that the ACC is just a bunch of 2 loss minimum teams and that won’t cut it in the polls. Tech should easily cruise by Miami and Duke but I am totally convinced if they can play the game they played VT with Washington minus the kickoff runback, they can match UGA. UGA is a 6-5 team coming into the Tech game and will never be any worse than they are this season. Richt is much more worried about Tech than Auburn because he knows that he can loose to Auburn and the Dawg fans will still be happy even with a 6-5 squad. He knows he will be lynched if he loses to Tech.

Very pleased with Tech’s performance. Yes they could have won and being a 14 point dog, not many thought they had a chance. The D really showed up. Tyrod Taylor is quick and elusive but his actual results were not impressive. Nesbitt played a fine game but Washington showed me that he’s ready and I had no idea that Nesbill had a replacement until this game. Wash seems to be a very good passer and I was glad to see other receivers get involved. I’ve seen enough of Hill. Good game for Allen. I really expected more from a Bud Foster defense. After the Clemson Coma this was a nice change.
