Thoughts on The Gold Standard?

Just recently, the Georgia Tech Athletic Association announced the launch of a new fan initiative.

The program is called “The Gold Standard” and is an effort to gather good sportsmanship pledges from Georgia Tech fans.

The official site can be found at RamblinWreck.com…or by clicking this link.

The “mission statement” follows:

OUR MISSION:
The Gold Standard is a campus wide effort of the Georgia Tech Athletic Association to raise awareness of sportsmanship at all Georgia Tech Athletic events by increasing positive Yellow Jacket support; creating a sense of pride in Georgia Tech venues, events, and traditions; promoting appreciation for the spirit of competition and providing a safe, healthy and respectful game day environment for all.

In short, they’re asking Georgia Tech fans to cheer for the Jackets rather than against opposing teams.

This is a good common sense approach.  There seems to be a common thread that runs through athletic fandom at various levels, where “fans” expend more energy boo’ing their opponents than supporting their own team.

Sometimes its easy to hate your opponent more than you love your own team.  We’ve all seen it before.  And most of us have been guilty of it from time to time.

The actual pledge is as follows:

THE GOLD STANDARD PLEDGE:
I pledge to honor and uphold The Gold Standard. I will strive to create a positive environment for my team and fellow fans. I will cheer for Georgia Tech, rather than against the opponent. I will conduct myself in a positive manner, showing respect, responsibility and leadership to Georgia Tech. It’s up with the White & Gold…Georgia Tech is out for a victory!

It sounds great, but with all due respect to Dan Radakovich and The Gold Standard effort, this is where they lose me.

I’ve got no problem at all pledging that I’ll cheer for Georgia Tech, rather than against the opponent.  I already approach GT events with that perspective.  So its not a change for me.

But I have to draw the line at altering the lyrics to Up With the White and Gold…

Oh well it’s up with the White and Gold,
Down with the Red and Black,
Georgia Tech is out for a victory.
We’ll drop the battle-axe on Georgia’s head,
When we meet her our team is sure to beat her.
Down on the old farm there will be no sound
Till our bow-wows rip through the air;
When the battle is over Georgia’s team will be found
With the Yellow Jackets swarming around!

I’m just not capable of saying “Up with the White and Gold” without automatically saying “Down with the Red and Black!”

Those lyrics have been ingrained into my pysche through years of repetition and its the bedtime song I sing to my daughter.

So while I understand what the Athletic Association is trying to do, I have to stay true to our traditions and most sacred of game day anthems.

I don’t run around before a Clemson or Virginia Tech game screaming “To Hell With Georgia!” like some fans might do.  I honestly think its a little silly.   And I’m sure the Tiger and Hokie fans would agree with me.

Maybe this is an area where we could learn a little something from our Aubie friends.  When you go to an Auburn game, they greet each other with cries of “War Eagle!”.

So I’m going to ask my fellow Georgia Tech fans to approach game day in the same fashion for at least the first eleven games this season.  When you greet each other, belt out a loud “Go Jackets!” in support of the White and Gold.

For that twelfth game, however, “Down With the Red and Black!” will be an acceptable and expected refrain.

And of course, we all know what the Good Word is.  That goes without saying!

Go Jackets!

Oh, we at UGA have a GREAT time whenever we visit your stadium. In fact, the last 5 times we visited we walked away victorious!!!

Seriously geeks, you will never be able to drop your “THWG” obsession. If this “Gold Standard” is to be taken serious, remove the “To Hell With Georgia” flag on that ugly car of yours……. thought so….

I also have news that may shock a LOT of you techies…

Not everybody aspires to grow up and be an engineer……

I know. You think I’m lying. But it’s very very true. In your minds, every student at UGA is there bc they were denied admission to the Trade School on North Ave. But the truth is, they have other dreams.

YOU chose Tech. Tech did NOT chose you. You are becoming one of the snobbiest and obnoxious “fanbases” in all of sports every time you tell somebody different.

uga, you spoke incorrectly, people go to uga because they want a social life that includes going to bar downtown and partying at frat houses. People go to Tech because they want an engineering degree that turns heads in the professional world. A Tech degree can easily get your foot in the door at many companies. Your right that we did chose Tech, but the school has to choose us as well.

This might be the stupidest thing I have ever heard about. Not root against UGA? Not see great humor when Dabo doesn’t account for a wide-out on a punt?

This looks like some sort of pledge for a Little League environment, not a major college football program. I’m not much of a “booer,” but I certainly want to retain my right to do so. I like DRad, but really, is he this bored? Rivalries are fun. I can’t see any real Tech fan not loving it when UGA gets beat.

BTW, did they consult Johnson before coming out with this pledge?

Can’t wait for the season to start and hear everyone cheering for the white and gold at BDS. With instant replay hopefully we will not have to boo the officials this year unless they start to call too many chop blocks because Frank Beamer is complaining about the triple option offense. Paul Johnson and Al Groh will be ready for the challenge and I see another successful season on the Flats. For more Georgia Tech Football articles go to http://isportsweb.com. Go Jackets!

Just what fans needed, a reason NOT to go to games. Brilliant ! If fans are within the law & within the confines of reasonable behavior, then they bought their ticket & with it, the right to cheer or boo as they see fit and without any absurd browbeating b.s. like this. Not revel in any misfortunes of UGAg, the Criminoles, or Miami? Get real.

Next time Tech is on defense and is faced with a 4th and goal, I’ll just sit quietly in my seat and not try to distract the other team. I won’t cheer when the other team gets a penalty. Our players will really like that. My family does not cause problems or hate other people, but don’t look for us to sign the “be a good little boy” agreement.

I am sorry Dan but I will always hate UGA. I never go to Athens because it is a horrible town and driving down 316 is like crossing the River Styx into hell. They are a horrible fan base and the school can drop off the map. When they play, I can only hope the ground swallows the whole stadium. Part of being a Georgia Tech fan is to hate UGA and cheer when teams like Florida beat them by 40 or 50 points. I will never stop saying “To Hell With Georgia.” Born a Tech fan, which is a minority in this state, I have grown up with UGA fans my whole life. With only a few exceptions, UGA fans are a bunch if idiotic rednecks. It makes me laugh that their last National Championship was approximately thirty years ago and that they always get schooled by teams like LSU, Florida and Alabama. Someone on this blog commented that no one aspires to be an engineer. I suppose that’s true. It is much easier to get drunk and not realize where you are the next morning than to study hard for Calculus. That is why the attendance at hell (UGAG) is much higher than Georgia Tech. To hell with Athens, Vince Dooley, bulldogs, drunken coeds, Coach Mark Richt, and that pit you call Sanford Stadium.

sorry disagree and will not change lyrics…I’m with Matt Jacket. Do not understand where all this is coming from. And I am not taking Uga’s shame, not now not ever. DRAD, honestly, is there still some SEC still in you? What exactly has GT fans done at home games to any visitor to ask the fans to sign some kind of agreement to treat visitors with respect? I have never seen any incident where they did anything out of line to any visitor. On the other hand, I did witness Miami fans mocking GT fans at the Varsity parking lot in 2006 before GT proceeded to beat them that year.
In Tampa, the GT fans were socializing and tailgating with the Clemson fans before the ACC title game. What is ironic, if you read any comments from uga fans after the loss in 2009, even the Junkyard blogger writer for AJC was making fun of GT as usual, the stadium, the music, the GT players and their videos on the tron, that man should be the one ashamed making fun of 20 year old college football players. I honestly do not know how AJC approves of that. But yet GT had Roddy Jones make a video asking the GT fans to treat UGA with respect. What gives with all that? To me it seems, just when GT makes head way to be a viable Div 1 football team, here comes something or someone to try and ruin it and push GT back behind everyone else. I think we have a great Athletic Director but I disagree with this and will let DRAD know how I feel.

I’ve been told this was done because of the volley of liquor bottles fired at the refs against BC a few years ago. They had an evaluation done of our gameday experience, and evidently this is the response. Personally, I don’t care if other fans like Tech. I want our fans to enjoy gameday.

If there’s anything I’d change it’d be knock down Peter’s parking deck and make that space into a ‘grove-like’ communal greenspace right in front of the stadium. With a more centralized tailgate I think everything would improve regarding family atmosphere and fan comeraderie. I also like the idea of fans making sure to greet each other wherever they meet with “Go Jackets!” It’s something I do when I see a fellow Jackets fan pretty much anywhere in the country.

The THWG thing will never go away. Yeah, our hate for Georgia is there, but our love for Tech should be bigger still!

I am old gold & white until the day I die and will always support the Institute, but I have to say this is crazy. One of the reasons folks love sports in the first place is because they can let their hair down and get riled up – and let it out – in sports than they can in any other activity in their lives. Now, when we’re on the ascendancy (to you Muttlanders, that means Tech now has more respect than your puppies), we need to be more vocal about it. If that means some occasional trash talk, so be it. If Clemons and the Turkeys don’t like it…tough – do something about it and beat us on the field. http://www.stinGTees.com

This is also tough for a typical Tech fan to take, seeing as how the Institute has hooked it’s radio flagship wagon to the (former) Chief Donkey at 790, who does his absolute best to kiss Muttlander behind every chance he gets. I wonder if that dies somewhat now that he’s an employee rather than owner of the “flagship”… http://www.stinGTees.com

DRad, this is your SECOND serious misstep. (I’m not even counting the truly lame “man in the crowd” promos and misc. tripe.) First, you wreck the basketball program by failing to cut loose Hewitt and his contract and instead spending tens of millions on renovating buildings to shelter him. Now, you’re directly insulting the intelligence and judgment of the Football Fanbase. We aren’t the loudest or largest group of fans, but we’re generally sober, generous, and gracious hosts (with notable exceptions) and we’re pretty damm (sic) loyal to Ma Tech. Your financial expertise and hiring decisions are truly greatly appreciated. We don’t require that you be from around here to do your job, but that also doesn’t give you a ticket to be a sanctimonious, condescending pollyanna.

Actually, Russ, the R&B Standard in Athens states:
To All UGA Fans:
Just because you didn’t go to the university and can’t spell U-G-A you can still cheer, drink, and spend your money on gamedays, providing your follow these simple rules:
1. When you pass out drunk please fall down so you are not mistaken for disillusioned fans and actual students.
2. Put your trash in the big barrels marked “TRASH.” (This does not include your family members or fellow tailgaters.)
3. When your money is gone, please leave town and go home. (Traffic tickets and DUI’s can be paid by credit card.)
4. Please join our “BAIL A BULLDOG BUDDY OUT OF JAIL” program which suggests that whenever you are being bailed out of jail on the Sunday after games, you look around your cell make sure there are no players left behind there.
7. (You know you can’t count anyway) Please refrain from making passes at either Uga or the Hairy Dawg mascots. The coeds are getting very jealous and feeling neglected.

This stuff all started when GT fans started throwing things on TV during a Boston College game a few years ago when Matt Ryan was quarterback. It got momentum when some prominent Alumni went to South Bend for the Notre Dame game and realized that GT, with all the tradition it has, should treat people like they do in South Bend. If you’ve never been, it’s an experience; I still to this day root for ND whenever they play and I have absolutely no affiliation to the school. The alumni are tired of the negativity, it doesn’t represent what GT is trying to achieve in national prominence. No one is asking you to change your lyrics, just tone it down–especially when the rest of the country is watching.

This is hilarious! Why would you want to take this out of college football? Hatred for your opponent and for your rival is what drives a lot of college fans. I am a UGA grad and former walk-on there and wouldn’t want any of the traditions such as THWG @ yech or the yella’ hammer @ bama to go away. That’s really the only saying yechies can use year in and year out against UGA. I mean what else can you say to Dawg fans after going 1-9 the last ten years.
