Coaches Polls, Party Schools, and a Video of the Week!

Coaches’ Polls

As the AJC has reported, the USAToday Preseason Coaches’ Poll has been released:

The most important teams to focus can be found below:

3. Florida – Hosts UGA in Jacksonville on October 30

6. Virginia Tech – Hosts GT on November 4

10. Iowa – The team that defeated GT on the recent Orange Bowl

13. Miami (Fla.) – Visits GT on November 13

17. Georgia Tech – Clean Old Fashioned Hate…’nuff said…

18. North Carolina – Hosts GT on September 18

19. Arkansas – Visits UGA on September 18

21. Georgia - Clean Old Fashioned Hate…’nuff said…

23. Auburn- Hosts UGA November 13

A few things jump out at me pretty much immediately.

  1. The week of October 30 – November 4 pits UGA and GT against the #3 (UF) and #6 (VT) preseason teams.
  2. September 18 is huge for both Tech and UGA with games against UNC and Arkansas.
  3. November 13 is huge for both Tech and UGA with games against Miami and Auburn.
  4. Iowa is considered a Top 10 team.  GT’s BCS loss wasn’t against a push over.

The Jackets and Dawgs share some weeks where both programs will really be tested.

I can’t really argue with the rankings too much…with the possible exception of Florida being ranked so highly.  I mean, seriously, should they be ranked #3 preseason right after losing Tim Tebow?

AJC columnist Mark Bradley seems to take issue with the fact that GT is ranked ahead of UGA. Lets spend a few minutes on this point of debate before we move into more entertaining content.  I think Mark may be a bit off in his reasoning.

Why should GT logically be ranked ahead of UGA?

  • The Jackets return a proven,  senior QB while UGA starts a redshirt freshman with no prior playing experience.
  • Both programs figure to run the ball.  GT’s option style of offense will frequently generate yards on the ground regardless of what opponents attempt defensively.  UGA’s opponents will stack the box in an attempt to force the rookie QB to throw the ball.
  • Al Groh is a better hire at defensive coordinator than Todd Grantham.  Why?  Both guys have NFL pedigrees but Groh has names like Parcells and Belichick on his resume as well as a year as the head guy with the Jets.  Groh is one of the standard bearers for the 3-4 defense both coaches are attempting to install and has a Super Bowl ring to prove it.
  • Al Groh has more collegiate experience to apply to his current position.  Grantham has about eight years as a defensive line coach at Virginia Tech and Michigan State in the ’90s.   Groh has about nine years as the head coach at Virginia where he earned a pair of ACC Coach of the Year awards in 2002 and 2007.
  • Al Groh knows the conference in which he’ll be coaching and the teams which he’ll be facing.  There will be little, if any, adjustment period for him.  When GT faces UVA, Groh will know what every player on the opposing sideline is capable of doing.
  • Is there honestly a better pairing of offensive and defensive coaches in collegiate football right now than Paul Johnson and Al Groh?  Johnson is already well reknowned for his ability to make adjustments at half time.  This has been apparent even in games GT has lost.  Now Groh is added to the mix on the defensive side of the ball.  Imagine those two guys comparing notes and altering schemes in the locker room this coming season…

Party Schools

Congrats to UGA for their recent accolades from The Princeton Review.

Apparently UGA is the #1 “Party School”. I can only figure that Damon Evans’ recent debacle pushed the dawgs over the edge in that competition.  I mean, when your AD is caught allegedly driving drunk with a lady whose panties end up in his possession … that’s gotta be worth a few bonus points.

In the end, I think Mike Lukovich says it best…“CHUGA”

Video of the Week

And last, but certainly not least, I present this little “gem”.

Lets just say the next time a UGA fan screams “Nerd!” in your face there’s no need to punch him ala Paul Johnson’s advice.

All you need to do is remember this video and turn and walk away…

And yes … that’s Coach Richt around the 3:20 mark…you gotta give the guy credit for helping those kids out.

First things first…. {{{{{30-24}}}}} hahahahahaha 8-1, 60-39-5

Second, I enjoy reading all content on UGA and GT because I am a college football junkie, and want to know what is going on with all local school’s programs. If Georgia State had a blog I would be reading it every day as well….. so I am not obsessed with GT, or scared of GT, or whatever you Nerds want to say to try and make me feel bad about coming on here.

Next… I have never read a UGA blog that dedicates so much of their time bashing the rival school. The writer or this blog is a truly pathetic existance. If you were to put a picture of the GT logo in front of them, and a picture of the UGA “G” in front of them, they would get more excited about their hate of the school that OWNS them than they would the pride and joy of their own “beloved” program. It makes me sad for him, and all of Tech “Nation” (more like a district or province) that you don’t know what it feels like to be truly passionate about your team. I am pretty sure your team doesn’t appreciate it either. Especially when they hear crickets chirping and gunshots nearby when they score in their home “stadium”.

Still….. I’m glad you are so high on Al Groh…. but from any perspective that is not GT biased, it only takes a few months ago’s newspapers up in Virginia to read the headlines about him being FIRED by the MIGHTY Virginia Cavaliers….UVA….Virginia!!!…. FIRED!!!! But you idiots want to act like he is the best hire ever. Time will tell……

Lastly…. I am glad you think UGA being considered a Party School is so degrating to us. In all actuality, it’s only degrating in your eyes. Tech students only wish they were in a town as fun as Athens, and were able to walk outside after dark and not have to worry about being mugged. School is about to start again, and you better believe the thugs in the ghetto cannot wait to hold some pimply faced nerd up and take his laptop. Good luck walking from Techwood Drive to your little Taco Mac and Blake’s on the Park for all your good times.

Continue to hate on UGA all you want. I am glad it gives you such a rise. While all your socially awkward student body thinks screaming “To Hell With Georgia” makes you the toughest fans out there, everybody else simply feels sorry for you.

“To Hell with Georgia Tech?”…..no……. I prefer to say “GO DAWGS”!!!!! And the attendance at football games is a direct relation to that sentiment.

UGA’s a joke….

UGA REALLY STANDS FOR JOE DIRT

August 7th, 2010
3:00 pm

First things first…Ugay is a place where you can do the following things to reach your ultimate goals in life or witness bliss in the making with the following….

1) Fail to live up to expectation! 08 were #1 in the nation but lost 3 times. 09 was preseason #13 but finished outside the top 30 in the nation! Enough said there.

2) Continue to make a joke out of it’s university with an AD who acts like a teenager, have players arrested on a weekly basis almost, and a coach who can’t get a grasp on his players conduct! SAD

3) Continue to recruit the top 5 classes and see it’s fan base proclaim themselves a PAPER RECRUITING CHAMPS, but what does it equate to on the field?? UNRANKED AT SEASON END OR SEE SHREVEPORT VS THE 4TH BEST TEAM FROM TEXAS!

4) Named as the #1 party school in the country. Wow.. Is that used in recruiting i wonder? Herpes at an all time high spreading in the cesspool of the south known as ATHENS! Just ask the CDC!!! CHUGA CHUGA AT THUGA!!!!! What an accomplishment by the student body. Congrats

5) The attendance at a stadium last time i checked, has won thuga exactly what again? All your fans show up to witness a loss to kentucky, thats what they got. How about GT spanking them 33-14 off the field in the 2nd half alone in front of that FULL capacity crowd. How fitting that it was staffords last home game and career numbers but a LOSS in the cesspool. I love it!

Where was your attendance in shreveport redneck? You didn’t even sell even close to all your tickets? You talk about how great your fans are, what happened in jacksonville when half of your fans headed to the exists AT HALFTIME! Great fans?? How about the GT vs thuga baseball game in athens when you got thumped 25-6 and your fans were leaving in the 3rd inning!!! the 3rd!!!!! Awesome fans dude, your an idiot and a HOMER. Keep leaving the dream up in the cesspool waving your rebel flag and watching jerry springer re-runs dude. Enjoy chasing GT in the polls again, but after september you guys will not sniff the top 25 again anyways. I believe shreveport looks good for you guys this year along with the papa johns bowl! Have a good day HOMER!!!

I concur with you concerning the Gators. Seventh or eighth would be about right until they are “undefeated” following the game with the Tide on October 2nd, then they will deserve to be in the top 3. If they’re undefeated after another “Gator feeding frenzy” in Jacksonville then they should be Number 1 or 2.

Time for all of the entertaining comments from the college football fans. It just makes this sport so much fun in addition to the play on the field. Good luck to both teams this year until their meeting in November. We are looking forward to another great football season for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. How can Tech claim National Championships when they have never been #1 in the AP Poll at anytime in their history? I guess if you say it enough times people will just accept it. Kinda like that 1998 ACC “Title” where you lost head-to-head with FSU but had the same record so you claim a conference title…pretty lame guys…pretty lame.

I’m glad we have a proven QB this yr who has a championship under his belt! and knows what hes doing from game 1 snap 1. Murray is gonna look like a deer in headlights come week 2 and i for 1 cant wait to see that. UGA will have 4 or 5 losses coming into our game this yr…right along the lines of last yr. Just cant wait to see the UGAgers start callin for richts head again….its just so dang funny to hear!!

Go Jackets! Ugag will continue to be less and less important in college football with each passing year. Who cares when they cannot even win their own little division. I guess we have to tolerate the bitter fans coming over here to our blogs, but that’s jealously for you.

PJ is right, we control our own season. We win it on the field. I really don’t care much for those preseason rankings.

We have tough games away. I hope that the players have a mental toughness about them to withstand these types of games. We have a rather deep team this year and that should help.

I’m excited to see what our new defense will do. Anything will be an improvment, but if they can actually make a difference, then watch out!

I knew all along that Iowa was no push over. They led the Big 10 for most of the season until their starting QB had to sit out 2 games – those were the only 2 games they lost. It is only the ignorant ugay fans that think otherwise.

Do uga fans even pay attention to how college football works. There has alway been more than one poll that declared national champs. Hell there is more than one now morons! How do you think you get the bcs rankings!?!?! You guys need to start doing some research before you let your keyboards overload your a$$! Tech will be right in the thick of it again this year leghumppers, they won’t miss a beat. Sorry to piss you off but losing the four jrs. just won’t make a difference. Nesbitt is healthy and allen is a beast. To the uga fans talking smack about Groh getting fired from UVA, Grantham got fired from the BROWNS! The Browns! Im sorry but it doesn’t get any worse than that!

Actually the “nerd” word is a high compliment.

While I am not a GT graduate I am intelligent enough to know that “nerd” is one of the highest compliments one can pay to another person. Only those low IQ types raised on television and “B” movies think “nerd” is an insult.

So to all you “nerd” haters do this; go through your house and unplug everything that was invented by a “nerd”. Your electric bill will be zero after you do so.

Last year I predicted GT to go 8 and 4. And I was wrong. But I will stick with the 8 and 4 for this season.

Been around for years fans. Got a big family. Many attended UGA. A few attended GT. I was too dumb to attend either. The proof is in the pudding. Rather the diploma. The GT grads are making alot of money. The UGA grads are doing OK. Some are laid off and looking for work. However I will admit in most seasons UGA has the better football team. And thats whats most important to a bunch of JAWJA fans.

Congrats to UGA on winning the top party school, surely this was based on the athletic programs ability to attain DUIs. I mean when your football team is averaging 8 a year (no joke, this is real) you are a party school with a very lax football team. Does the football scholarship come with free beer at UGA?

I honestly don’t think we are going to be at a loss for a sack leader because this year we have more than one person and a scheme that promotes blitzing.

I find it hilarious how much Tech fans obsess over Georgia. Your blog is mostly about GA, your fight song mentions GA, and there are more GT fans posting comments on the GA boards than this one. You guys should concentrate on selling out your stadium and having pride in GT’s team as opposed to hating UGA.

I do think that the Paul Johnson- Al Groh combo will be good, but I don’t agree with the statement that there is no better combination in college football. These guys have yet to coach a game together. Until someone beats UA, it has to be McElwain-Smart.

I, like most of you reading this comment, read all of the articles on the sports page regarding UGA and GT. I must say that this article is the most biased blog I’ve read this year.

Our records from the past are only good for wall decorations (assuming the team has achieved something). The scores at the end of the games during the 2010 season are what really matter.

Pre-season polls are garbage. Both UGA and GT have good chances to be great this year. Both have offenses that are ready to unleash and a new, hopefully better, defense. However, at the same time, there are questions on each side of the ball for each team.

All teams need a little luck, or good fortune, in order to make it to the national championship. Unfortunately, neither UGA nor GT has received a lot of it lately.

In summary, quit living in the past, cheer for your teams, and quit talking crap. I’d rather read quality comments rather than a bunch of people ranting about read panties, careers, scores from past games, etc.

Since dawgtards seem to love living in the past, how about remembering the Jan Kemp trial, which exposed UGA and Vince Dooley for the jokes that they were. My favorite quote from the trial was this one:

O. Hale Almand Jr., a lawyer for the defense, offered a justification for the favorable treatment accorded the athletes, citing a hypothetical player. “We may not make a university student out of him,” he told the jury, “but if we can teach him to read and write, maybe he can work at the post office rather than as a garbageman when he gets through with his athletic career.”

The best thing about the trial was that it completely killed Vince Dooley’s shot at Congress, since he was exposed as a fraud and a cheat during the trial. Make no mistake – Dooley knew everything that was going on.

Nothing has changed in the almost three decades since the trial. If anything, the abuses are even worse. Exhibit #1: Jim Harrick and son.

Today the players are even more illiterate and felonious and, well, just plain stupid, as evidenced by their arrest records and record number of penalties. Even Vince Dooley couldn’t have controlled this mob, much less Mark Richt. And now even the AD is a drunk debaucherer.

There’s a reason why UGA is known as The Cesspool of the South.

Let’s stay classy GT fans, because we have the facts on our side. Would you rather have a GT degree or a UGA degree (hint: look at the average salaries)?
Would you rather have top 10 recruiting classes and disappoint every year or have top 40 recruiting classes and go to a bowl every year for the last 13 years?
Would you rather have Paul Johnson or Mike Bobo running your offense?
Would you rather have Al Groh (a guy who has been a Super Bowl winning defensive coach, was fired from his head coaching job and was rightly demoted to DC, and was CPJ’s 1st choice) or Todd Grantham (a guy who has no HC experience, was fired from his only other DC job, and was CMR’s 3rd choice) running your defense.
Now of course the UGA fans are going to bring up 8 of 9 and 30-24, but I say they should be embarassed at losing any game to us when they have top 10 recruiting classes every year and we have top 40 recruiting classes. We are an academic and research focused Institute, and I am glad we have higher standards.

A few observations:

1. Yeah, the video was corny. So was my video book report in sixth grade on “Jonathan Livingston Seagull.” The kids made it, not the J-school. It was intended to entertain a bunch of new students, not to illustrate their abilities as professional videographers. The corniness was part of the humor aspect of this production. Sorry if you guys don’t get it.

2. The whole national title count thing is getting old–and is quite subjective. The whole point of the BCS was to try to decide a national champion on the field and to eliminate the inherent subjectivity of selection via various polls. Tech fans are fond of citing four national titles, but few of those were consensus national titles (even 1990 was a split title), and most were in the Paleolithic era. Using those standards, Princeton (with 28 titles) and Yale (with 27) kick both of our butts in terms of national title counts–yet neither of those schools would stay on the field with Georgia or Georgia Tech for a single quarter now. If one looks at data compiled by the College Football Data Warehouse (CFDW), considered by many to be the most reliable objective source for national title counts, Tech claims viable national titles in 1917, 1928, 1952 and 1990. The 1917 and 1928 national titles were consensus; the consensus title holder in 1952 was actually Michigan State, and we all know about the split title in 1990. The CFDW has Georgia claiming viable national titles in 1942 and 1980; both of these were consensus titles. Tech has been named as one of the national title-holders in at least one poll six times; Georgia has been named as one of these end-of-season “national champs” five times. Given that fact, the concomitant fact that Georgia has two consensus titles overall–the same as Tech–and given that two of Tech’s titles were from an era that predates the birth of 99% of people living in this country today, I would venture that the whole “national title count” argument is irrelevant to the discussion of this coming season.

3. The Damon Evans situation was indeed an embarrassing–to Damon Evans. He exercised poor judgement, much in the same way that Joe Hamilton exercised poor judgement while driving under the influence of marijuana and alcohol a few years back. That incident wasn’t due to a failure on Georgia Tech’s part; it was an individual person’s bad decision, much like Evans’. Tech fired Hamilton, Georgia fired Evans. Let’s move on.

4. Preseason polls don’t mean jack. We all know that. Team chemistry, injuries, etc. can all derail even the most promising of seasons. That’s why we play the game, boys. So I really don’t care who is ranked what in the preseason. Each team controls its own destiny there. Let’s just play ball.

5. The “party school” rankings are about as subjective and arbitrary as any thing out there. My engineering friends will corroborate that. There just aren’t measurable data out there to accurately determine this designation. If Georgia were ranked in the top 10 in student suicides or in drug overdose deaths, I’d worry, because these are quantifiable variables. Party school rankings? Pah. That’s as subjective as the “most beautiful coed” rankings. Is Athens a great college town? Yep–but so are Chapel Hill, Charlottesville, Madison, Austin and Ann Arbor. This list was compiled to sell magazines. It means nothing except that Athens is a great college town–but we knew that already.

6. Speaking of objectivity, I think any preseason assessments of the relative merits of Grantham’s and Groh’s hires are woefully premature. Both are destined to be upgrades from their predecessors; that’s the one thing that is fairly certain. In terms of the outcomes of these men on their respective players, let’s see how this turns out on the field.

7. One thing is for certain–Paul Johnson has made Tech football fun to watch again. And the renewed competitiveness in the rivalry will hopefully make both programs more competitive–and result in some football classics that we’ll both get to enjoy in the future. Good rivalries are just good football. Personally, I’m looking forward to Tech-Georgia over the next decade or so. There should be a few games with more than state pride on the line in there, and that’s a good thing.

The Citrus Bowl in 1990 was a second tier bowl. Tt then was behind the Gator, the Peach and the Liberty and the Cotton in prestige. GT won the NC there with 3 or 4 other schools, depending on which newspapaer that you read then. Fine. Hey ……….congrats!!!

GT has had two major bolw trips in 43 years …………. the 1967 Urange Bowl ( Bobby Dodd lost to Florida ) and the 2009 Urange and a humiliating loss to Iowa’s slow, white boy farmers.

Two major bowls ( yes, I will go ahead and count the Citrus) so, GT has 3 major bowl in 43 years. This record does not denote a major college program. It is similar to a Southern Mississsippi or a Maryland or a Virginia or a Louisville or a Baylor or a Iowa State ……….it is not big boy ball.

Money $$$, a stadium with 91,000 screaming fans and did I say $$$ and MAJOR BOWLS over many, many decades suggest an ELITE program ……………um, ah sort of like UGA is. Also, UGA plays in the SEC. ACC? Small ball.

Recently, three ESPN TV sports casters commented that “the UGA AD job was equal to the best in America at Texas, Florida and Ohio State”. ELITE all and amazingly, all but UGA have won the NC lately. Imagine how elite UGA would be IF they did win the NC lately. No NC and UGA is STILL CONSIDERED ELITE by ESPN. Power, prestige, money and fan support and BRAND AWARENESS is what drives the ELITE STATUS. Money baby!!!

Three major bowls for GT over 43 years. What happened in the other 40 years? Ask yourself that. GT’s brand is The Joke By Coke.

I rest my case. Fore !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TO “a comment or two” You actually made 15 comments. UGA is elite in that they have the best
football players in the land and haven’t sniffed a nat champ in 30 years. An elite school would perhaps
have a consistent top 5 or 10 roundball program every year. The other schools you mentioned ( Texas, Ohio State, and FL) all have great basketball programs. UGA has an occasional good tennis team and a good women’s gym squad but thats all. Its obvious that ESPN is full of it when putting UGA into the
“elite” category.

Yes, UGA is ELITE and GT is small ball

Do you reject my several points?? GT has been to um, ah, MORE major bowls in 43 years? Sir, please list them …………..you can do that, can you not?

My count is 2 major bowls ( 2 urange trips and one citrus, although it was not a major in 90 ) is it.

Go ahead ………..list the majors that I left out.

AAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAH, you cannot. GT is small ball and this year UGA will hand GT their 9th loss in 10 games and ther 12th in 16.
