Jackets Facing the Hokies in Greensboro…

Mark Fox should send the ACC offices a Thank You note after Marcus Thornton’s recent commitment.  He’d be a Yellow Jacket if the ACC had a bit of sense about how to handle recruits who get hosed when the coach that recruited them gets fired.  I figure Fox is a good enough coach without that sort of assistance from our conference.

Losing out on Knox after missing out on Thornton really puts Paul Hewitt in a bind.  Looks like we’ll be running a guard heavy offense this coming hoops season.  On the bright side, at least we won’t be confused about who is supposed to be playing what position in the post for the Jackets.  Lets hope the players and coaches aren’t confused either…

Rumors of conference expansion continue to swirl around and  I remain convinced that Tech is a better fit for the Big Ten (than the SEC) for a variety of reasons.  The biggest reason would be the money, honestly.  How would UGA fans react if GT were suddenly a member of the top power conference in college football while pulling a larger check in the process.  I bet that wouldn’t sit well…

Some of the way-too-early-to-be-taken-seriously preseason polls are out and while the ACC in general is garnering high expectations, the rankings for GT seem to be hit, miss, or non-existant.  There is just too much uncertainty surrounding how the offense will adjust to the loss of Demarious Thomas and whether or not Al Groh can get the 3-4 defense working on the Flats.

As I type this, I’m also tracking the GT vs Hokies game online.  It looks like we’re down 3-1 with the Hokies batting in the 5th.  The Hokies scored on a couple of homers in the 1st and 2nd innings but have only managed two hits so far.  Unfortunately, those two hits both left the park and the Jackets’ bats have been anemic.  We have one hit, which was a homer in the third.

So…there have been three hits total in the GT vs VT game (as I write this) and all three were homers.   I guess its all or nothing in Greensboro eh?

There won’t be another fan blog in the upcoming week.  I’m heading to random ports of call in the Caribbean.  While I might find a PC here or there to follow the baseball team’s march to the College World Series, I won’t have the time to blog.

Anyone else ready for football season already?

Go Jackets!

Danny Hall always builds his teams around the long ball. This year he stacked the line up with left handers which works at home in the regular season. In the post season, everyone will pich left handers against us and shut us down again. Hall will never learn to adjust and teach his teams how to bunt or steal bases when we can’t hit home runs. Unfortunately we will be out early again this year but Hall and Hewitt will hang around forever.

I don’t believe VT will lose their next two games. So it looks like we are just playing warm up games for the NCAA tournament. Hopefully it won’t hurt our chances of hosting a regional.

On the bright side, after we lose to Georgia at home this coming season, maybe Hewitt’s time will finally be up.

I’m still pissed he’s not at Saint Johns. It’s basketball death by a thousand cuts with Phew.

Your TV doesn’t pick up FSSO? Following a game online? “Looks like we’re down 3-1″? No ‘looks-like’ about it. This was your first so-called blog in ages, and you won’t be doing another one anytime soon? What commitment! Oh, and M Fox doesn’t owe anybody anything, but thanks for opening with a comment on the Dawgs.

Geez Boggs, a little cheese with that whine? Thornton stated the transfer rule did not effect his decision at all. My gut tells me he wanted to play for a coach that could maximize his talent. That leaves out Hewitt.

SO WHAT? Why do we care about how THEY feel? Are you kidding me? And why are you mentioning them in that conversation? That would be great! I would hope it would make them angry and you should hope that to (being a tech fan and hating uga). I really don’t understand your point there?

The Big 10 thing isn’t going to happen. They would never take a school who couldn’t even sell out its own allotment to a BCS Bowl.

But they do take schools that are actually “schools” unlike UGA. They also perfer BCS level programs over shreveport level programs.

It will be awesome to make more money than UGA in sports and be in a superior, national-reaching conference as well. At that point, sports will finally mirror real life when it comes to GT vs. UGA.

Yes, I graduated from UGA. So what? I root for Tech and UGA but if the two are playing I root for the Dawgs. That has nothing to do with what I write in this blog. I made the comment about UGA’s reaction because being a UGA fan myself I too would be upset if Tech joined the SEC. Tech is not cut out to be in the SEC. You people need to grow up. I’m on a cruise. Leave me alone!

If Danny Hall would ever hire a pitching coach, Tech would be dangerous. Unfortunately, he is set for life like Hewitt so he doesn’t bother to hire a decent pitching coach and Tech will continue to choke once you get past their ace. This is why Danny tried to pitch Deck on two days rest last year and it cost Tech their season.

Danny Hall is a pretty damn good baseball coach. It is always the coaches fault. He is kinda like UGA with these great recruits. He catches hell if he doesn’t recruit the babies at East Cobb and those kids care only about their babied arms and themselves. That why they can’t come through when the going gets tough.

Biff Pocoroba

You are correct. Danny is a good coach…until the post season. Then it becomes too apparent that he doesn’t work on fundamentals in practice. His teams can’t bunt and they make too many dumb mistakes not knowing when to cover a base and give up a lot of extra bases. Danny doesn’t have much personality so he can’t ever fire his team up when they need a wake up call. Danny will finally be on the hot seat after this season after taking a team from #1 in the country to a team that won’t even host one of the 16 regionals. Oh well, at least I won’t have to sit out there in 90 degree heat watching Danny choke away another once promising season next weekend. It was really depressing watching him get out coached by that idiot Leggett today. Glad I didn’t waste the time to drive to Greensboro.

Bod Didier

I promise you Danny Hall will not be on the hot seat. Nor is Jack Leggett an idiot. He is as well respected as any coach in America. You say Hall has no personality and Leggett has alot. What do you want? I can tell you have never done anything but caught. You should have talked to Dave Bristol and learned something about coaching.

Biff Pocoroba

You are probably right about Danny not being on the hot seat since most people could care less about baseball and think he is doing a great job since he his ranked in the top ten in April every year playing against Wofford and Georgia State. There are a lot of Clemson fans upset with Leggett after having two poor seasons in three years. Danny doesn’t need to have team hugs like Leggett but he can’t cross his arms and scowl all game to motivate his team. When Danny was considered for the Texas A&M job, their fans were irate because they didn’t want someone who underachieved with so much talent every year. Tech doens’t need to become a small ball team, but Danny can’t win with nine guys trying for homeruns every time up and not being able to manufacture a run. He can’t win with an all lefty lineup when average left handed pitchers can make us look awful. Like Hewitt, Danny will send a lot of players to the pros and do just enough in the regular season to keep enough fans happy to keep his job. When Dave Perno goes to Omaha more often than Hall, there is a serious leadership problem.

I agree with alot of what you are saying. You know I wonder how many people are on Mike Martin for not ever winning the big one. Kind of like Ron Polk, probably the greatest college coach ever, not winning the big one. Sometime there is a fine line and I agree Hall has had his trouble especially with UGA. I’m not sure Jim Morris would have ever won the way people wanted too. I still say Tech and GA sometimes rely on the pampered East Cobb league.

With those East Cobb guys especially pitchers, winning as a team is not one of their priorities, never was their parents and it not theirs either.

It is lousy………….right??? At least UGA won vs a name brand school like Texas A & M instead of losing badly to a farm raised, white, fat boy school like Iowa. AAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHHAHA
