So…shortly after I posted some kudos to the basketball team and Coach Hewitt, the wheels fall off and they quickly fail the Johnson Logic Test by losing back to back games.
They’ve lost three of the last four games…a blow out at Duke, a heartbreaker at Miami, and a decisive loss to Wake. The only win in that stretch was the NCSU “escape” which included possibly the worst four minutes of basketball I’ve ever seen a Georgia Tech squad play.
The Jackets are now out of the Top 25 and hold a losing ACC record at 5-6 in the conference. We’ve gone from being a solid lock for a NCAA tourney berth to suddenly looking at being a bubble team.
But…as bad as the Jackets have played recently, the most troubling development may be the reaction of the fans on the various message boards. In past seasons there was debate and complaint and venting…now there is mostly a resigned silence and a general understanding that our teams continue to underachieve in spite of a steady string of apparent NBA-ready talent.
Tonight we host a UNC team that is struggling mightily at 14-11 (3-7 ACC). I’m curious to see what the home crowd looks like. This was a game in past years that would have seen students camping out for tickets and which would have generated buzz online and amongst the GT faithful. I would bet even money that tonight won’t be sold out. Neither UNC fans or GT fans have much to really get excited about right now.
Can we afford this long, slow decline into mediocrity? Can we afford to make a change? Can we afford not to…if season ticket sales erode as apathy sets in?
Go Jackets…beat the Heels…please…
