Is Basketball Apathy Setting In?

So…shortly after I posted some kudos to the basketball team and Coach Hewitt, the wheels fall off and they quickly fail the Johnson Logic Test by losing back to back games.

They’ve lost three of the last four games…a blow out at Duke, a heartbreaker at Miami, and a decisive loss to Wake.  The only win in that stretch was the NCSU “escape” which included possibly the worst four minutes of basketball I’ve ever seen a Georgia Tech squad play.

The Jackets are now out of the Top 25 and hold a losing ACC record at 5-6 in the conference.  We’ve gone from being a solid lock for a NCAA tourney berth to suddenly looking at being a bubble team.

But…as bad as the Jackets have played recently, the most troubling development may be the reaction of the fans on the various message boards.   In past seasons there was debate and complaint and venting…now there is mostly a resigned silence and a general understanding that our teams continue to underachieve in spite of a steady string of apparent NBA-ready talent.

Tonight we host a UNC team that is struggling mightily at 14-11 (3-7 ACC).  I’m curious to see what the home crowd looks like.  This was a game in past years that would have seen students camping out for tickets and which would have generated buzz online and amongst the GT faithful.  I would bet even money that tonight won’t be sold out.  Neither UNC fans or GT fans have much to really get excited about right now.

Can we afford this long, slow decline into mediocrity?  Can we afford to make a change?  Can we afford not to…if season ticket sales erode as apathy sets in?

Go Jackets…beat the Heels…please…

So true. As a tech student, I’ve got a free ticket to tonight’s game, but after all of the frustration, I’m opting to study rather than go. And my dad, a tech grad, would normally drive 2 hours down here for a few weekend games, but refuses to because of the way this team is playing. Hopefully D-Rad will get the message this time and do away with CPH, who isn’t using his talent nearly the way he should!

“Can we afford this long, slow decline into mediocrity?” ………We have been for 9 years buddy!!!!! Wake up I have been calling for the head of the worst coach in Division I basketball for 5 years. Bout time the bandwagon has arrived …….and once again I have sold my tickets so I do not have to witness a team that plays like a dead cow (standing waiting for something to happen) or a chicken w its head cut off …..Either way this team has not run an offensive play since 2004

BTW Chumpert is having his 2nd best game ever tonight …….the key tonight is he hasnt SHOT the ball once!!!!!! How pathetic is it that this constitutes his second best game in his career on The Flats???

sadly,i think apathy set in a few years ago…….hewitt can recruit but has got to be the worst bench coach in college basketball…..a new, competent coach is the only way to stop this slide……

Go Jackets!

For years we have suffered through poor free throw shooting, turnovers, and inconsistency. Yes, it has born some serious apathy. I was in school during the Price years. How far Tech BBall has fallen since then. Shameful.

Why do people keep saying Hewitt can recruit? Have you seen next year’s class? We have one guy coming in and will probabably lose 4. That isn’t good recruting.

I hate to feel this way after a win, but I look at the box score and see 20 turnovers and .500 from the line. It’s just a darn good thing that UNC is having such a down year.

It’s hard not to be apathetic when things don’t improve. Maybe depressed is a better word than apathetic.

Biff ……. I have been saying the same thing ….even last year he recruited players NOT A TEAM!!!!! Other than Jarrett he hasnt recruited one true point guard and then he wonders why we turn the ball over 20 times a game. I just want to see a team in control for once who has an identity on offense. Instead I am subjected to 4 people standing around while one either tries to force a pass to someone or heaves up desperation garbage with the shot clock low. When was the last time anyone set a PICK on this team, whether it be on the ball or away from it??? I think at best the answer will be 5 years ago.

Barring transfers from a Hewitt firing, Tech does have 2 players that are good being redshirted. Daniel Miller and Kammeon Holsey. Holsey would have played quality minutes up front if he wasn’ hurt. ( which begs question why Sheehan hasn’t been playing 7-10 a game). But you know kids leave when a coach gets fired. If Hewitt goes, next coach better call Oliver, Udofia and Rice day one.

Recruiting means more than just getting some NBA caliber players. It means planning ahead and keeping the cupboard stocked. How many seasons, like last year for instance, have we had down years simply because we didn’t have the talent? And Hewitt got away with the “They’re young” excuse. But no more. We shouldn’t have years as lean as last year ever. And with the talent he got this one year (and probably won’t have next year), there’s no excuse for the way they are playing. Last night’s blowout was much more about how bad UNC is this year than about Tech.

Time to go, CPH. I was a very big fan of yours till the year after the Final Four. I don’t know what happened since then, but whatever it was, it didn’t involve good coaching.

Did anyone check the boxscore for the UNC game? UNC shot 30% from the field and 40% from the FT line!!!! Off night, or do they suck?

February 17th, 2010

Methinks UNC will be tough next year with Davis, Henson, Zeller, Barnes (no 1 recruit in nation), Bullock (another top 5 recruit), Drew, Gill, et. They are terrible this year – no excuses. But next year…look out! Davis and Henson were both top 5. Essentially, 4 of 5 Heels next year were rated in top 5 of class.

Bill is right about the cupboard not being completely bare with Daniel Miller and Holsey. Neither has any experience but both have poetenial. If Sheehan stays he will get some minutes also. It would be nice to see what he could do with some coaching. And we have talent at the guard and small forward position. Start Oliver in Bell’s place (an improvement), put Mo Miller back at point guard and move Shumpert to the 2 guard position. This leaves us with Rice Jr. and Udofia as backups at small forward and the guard positions. This is without any recruits that we get. Hopefully, we get another big man or two to fill out the roster for next year. Of course, all this depends on having a coaching staff that knows how to develop talent into a good basketball team.

On the telecast last night the g-man brought up both my previous post points. GT actually played all freshmen against UNC for most of the 2nd half. Can’t ever remember GT doing that. They are certainly the youngest team in the NCAA D1. In addition he mentioned how GT somehow is the only team to play the upper half of the ACC twice each. All GT has to do is win at Maryland to make the NCAA at this point. With their RPI and strength of schedule they will be a lock at 20 wins but gotta get there first. In addition it will solidify Hewitt as the coach for many more years to come. That and his almost un-fireable contract.

Hate to disappoint all the fire-Hewitt fans on here but CPH is going nowhere. Favors will stay at Tech as well. The man simply is not ready for the NBA. In addition he has seen the demise of more talented players before him after 1 year of college ball. Favors will have a chance to be “the man” in the ACC next year. That and another year to raise his NBA draft position should mean another year on the flats.

The Jackets look strong next year with Favors and with Hewitt coaching them they will rise to the top of the ACC. Hewitt is a great coach and motivator.

Get serious Tech folks….Favors is out of here. NBA doesn’t draft on stats, fouls, or minutes played…it’s all about potential. Rookies get that 3 year guarantee and by the third year they are starting….ask jack, young, Louis Williams etc.. Tech’s problem is still Heweitt and his rotations. Last nite, Favors gets two straight dunks and then he is off to the bench. These kids rarely get in the flow. How can the game come toyou when after playing four minutes your game is on the bench for the next 6 minutes. And then there are the assistants on the bench. The in bounds fiasco against NC State told us what those stooges are capable of.

Well I kind of take the position that if everyone is thinking alike then someone isn’t thinking-even at the risk that everyone might be right. It is easy to jump on the fire-hewitt-now bandwagon so I am not doing it. I prefer to pull for the team we have and see where it goes. This team has a lot of potential and I feel it will surprise some people at NCAA time. Might even be a sweet 16 team.

One thing I know for sure, Rad isn’t firing Hewitt no matter what the outcome of this year is. Hewitt has a perpetual contract. Go look it up. The huge payout Hewitt would get isn’t worth the rewards GT would reap-if any.

Right now Favors is not ranked as a lottery pick, barely 1st round. Favors may be viewed as having great potential by teams draft wise but Favors will only go if he is a lottery pick. Otherwise he would be better off staying and get more money down the road. Call it an 80% chance he stays at Tech, IMO.

So ya’ll keep on bitchin and moanin about the team and fire Hewitt and blah blah blah, excuse me but I will be pulling hard as always for the team. Paul Hewitt is a great coach and motivator. See you losers later.

your a dimwit

even if favors stays…. your a dimwit

phew has a case of the bca ass and this happened when he got the contract that keeps him here no matter what he does. once he got the contract wins and losses and graduating players became secondary to his primary goal.

recruiting ‘black’ players and getting ‘black’ players into the nba.

even a dimwit can see that ….. well maybe a dimwit except YOU!

he obviously does not care one iota about the gt basketball program. with bc we went to the ncaa 14 out of 17 years. with bc we occasionaly finished in the upper 1/3 of the acc. with bc we won an acc tourney. with bc we developed pg’s. with bc we actually had a coach that cared for and loved gt.

with phew we get none of that. phew is a self centered black man who is all about himself.

If Hewitt had a 100th of the integrity or love for GT that coach Cremins had, he would take a lesser buyout and resign. However, do not hold your breath. He has destroyed in the past 4 years everything Cremins built here and has made GT basketball not only irrevelant nationally, but irrevelant in the ACC and to most of the fan base. Alexander use to ROCK, therefore the name Thrillerdome. Now even if there is a decent crowd, there is no excitement, and certainly not much home court advantage. The GT basketball job is one of the top 20 basketball jobs in America, playing in the ACC, major tv market, City of Atlanta. Oh but lets not forget that Hewitt stated that no one wanted the job when he took it. Dwayne Morrison was and is a better coach than Hewitt. Also, lets not forget when he had an opening on his staff, when maybe he could have briught in a good knowledgeable bench coach to really help out, he brings in a yes man that played for him, with no real pedigree. GT basketball is basically dead. Enjoy this year folks as this is as good as it will ever be with Hewitt. When all his bigs are gone to the NBA next year it will be back to winning 3 or 4 conference games, and a 500 record at best. Wish the man had just one ounce of the character and love for GT that coach Bobby had.

dumber that rock on.

sorry brah but just because you are afraid of your own shadow and wont stick up for yourself there are plenty of us who dont feel the white guilt. i certainly dont. i dont use the n word. i feel just as bad for any body of any race who is subjected to that from any body …. including our coach.

so your ok with his comment (on more than one occasion) that his job as he sees it is to ‘recruit black players and get them into the nba’?????? why not just say ‘my job is to help all my players graduate and or get into the nba. he has said this more than once so he has not misspoken or been misquoted. what do you think would have happened to bobby cremins had he said ‘my job is to recruit white players and help them graduate or get into the nba`???? he would have been chastised and subjected to ridicule…. and rightly so.

we have a coach who if he looked at himself in the mirror would see that he is THE POSTER CHILD FOR REASONS WHY TO NOT HIRE A BLACK COACH. he is doing the bca no favors. last time i looked he has not had even a nibble of a job prospect since 04–05. the nba scouts laugh at his coaching and don nelson of the golden state warriors made comments in an article that anthony morrow was subjected to POOOOOR coaching in college. the same amo that is is averaging 28 points a game over the last 5 games in the nba. same kid who did nothing at gt.

i stand by my statement. besides being just an outright poor coach, paul hewitt saw an opportunity to advance his own agenda once he got the forever contract. wins and losses be damned. it is no coincidence that the program is approaching the same dire staights that it was in the precremins era. as i said above he has a case of the bca ass. really no other way to express it and get the point across.

ya know we all talk about his poor coaching but little is said about the fact that not only did we have the worse record at home or away or overall in the last 30 years last year but our team finished last in academics. AND we went on probation for it. first time ever for the bb program to be on probation i do believe.

he has recruited players with questionable character. yes bc recruited marbury and the kid that went to iowa. for the most part bobby cremins over 19 years had few players that compare to the thugs that phew recruits. over the last 5-6 years gt has been a revolving door for players who didnt fit in at gt. i lost track of all the players that have left the program. some poor character examples come to mind such as … dickey, southall and morris. two of these kids were long time phewitt targets so he had to know they had marginal character. we had another of his players get dismissed for cheating and more recently we had wild bill critterion pull a gun in an nba locker room. my question is why we had a kid with such poor character even at gt to begin with. bc in 19 years cant point to as many poor fits as phew can over the course of a 5 year span.

of course its all part of the phew agenda. the agenda that he can now pursue without worrying about wins and losses and the program. that he has been placing black players into the nba is his response to his record.

another example: we can go back just a few days ago. one of our future nba stars mentioned to phew that he aint getting enough minutes. hey dont blame me i didnt recruit him. just saying. i say that i have a problem with a coach who puts the needs of an individual player over the needs of the TEAM. just like phew does. a player that is not a true pg should not be playing major minutes at pg when we have other players that are better suited to the position on the TEAM.

so i ask you…. what makes paul hewitt untouchable???? he plays the race card often. so we are just supposed to be ok and keep our opinions to ourselves because he is black? give me a break! why dont YOU crawl back into your own little pc world.

i dunno about you but i feel that he should be worried about the program and graduation rates and wins an loses and satisfying the fan base. we do help pay for his salary dont we?

if he feels the need to put his BCA agenda over that of the program (the race card dude the race card) then i suggest that he retire gracefully and join jesse jackson an al sharpton.

the caveat to all this is that when and not if he gets canned …. he will go kicking an screaming … he will hire lawyers … he will say he was unjustly fired … he will try an drag gt through the mud. wanna put a wager on it? i thought so!

is that you connell?

after all paul phew hewitt is THE PRESIDENT OF THE BCA.

Hewitt has to be fired. He’s an awful coach and I won’t even watch games on TV. GT is so unprepared to finish games that it is downright embarrassing. Clearly the flaws in game management and player fundamentals rest with the coach. He has found a way to actually take players like Iman Shumpert and make them worse.

Has a college player ever been a first round..maybe top 10 pick nba pick, and not even played in an ncaa tourney game. Heck, tech will have 2 first rounders and might not even make the ncaa’s. I think this says it all about it’s coach.
