Any reader who is confused by my title should check out Tony Barnart’s AJC blog from January 11.
I debated writing a rebuttal, but this is a GT fan blog…and I’ve been chewing on it for a few weeks now.
And sometimes things just have to be said…
With all due respect, I think Tony really missed the boat on the 2009 season. This is especially the case when you consider the hometown Yellow Jackets. This wasn’t just another winning season for Georgia Tech…it was a conference championship, BCS bowl season that included a ton of high drama and compelling storylines! But nothing rated a mention on his 2009 memory lane blog post…
Not that I would expect all or most of the following suggestions to make someone’s list, but at least one might have let us GT fans know that Tony was paying attention to something other than Bama, Florida, or the SEC in general. I mean…we’re in Atlanta right?
No mention of the Tech vs FSU game? Almost 100 points, over 1000 yards of offense, a lightning delay, and Bobby Bowden walking out arm in arm with his team during the height of the breaking drama that occured in Tallahassee?
No mention of the Jacket’s defeat of #4 Virginia Tech at home and the celebration that followed?
No mention of Johnson’s decision to go for it against Wake Forest in overtime, with the title game hanging in the balance? (Rob Akey and Idaho got a mention for their 2 point conversion in the Humanitarian Bowl?) The overtime call against Wake Forest was one of THE high drama situations of the entire season…period!
No mention of CJ Spiller’s incredible season and the fact that he wasn’t even a Heisman finalist after his insane performance in the ACC title game?
No mention of Demaryius Thomas snagging Biletnikoff Semi Finalist recognition while leading the ACC in total receiving yards and yards per catch…as a part of Paul Johnson’s triple option running offense?!?!
No mention of Paul Johnson’s second consecutive ACC Coach of the Year Award and the speed with which he’s put the Tech program on a top flight winning track?
No mention of the Jackets winning the ACC title?
No mention of the Jackets earning their first BCS bowl bid?
No mention of UGA’s big upset of Tech at home when we were ranked so highly. As much as it pains me to admit it, that game warranted mention on any list written by any writer who hails from the state of Georgia!
No mention of UGA defeating TAMU in their bowl game…without a defensive coordinator on the staff? Again, as much as it pains me to admit it, that success warrants mention as well.
(So yeah…even this GT fan can admit that UGA got stiffed on a few highlights as well. )
All in all it looks like nine out of fifteen “images” were SEC related and eight of THOSE nine were Bama or Florida related to some degree. So pretty much half of Tony’s memories from 2009 were somehow related to Nick Saban or Tim Tebow. And the Colt McCoy mention could be credited to Bama’s national title as well. So make that ten of fifteen “images” SEC related. Effectively two thirds of the memories or “images” were SEC-centric and not a single one related to Georgia Tech or the ACC beyond the obvious Bowden shout out.
So can I call it like I see it? Its really Mr. SEC College Football isn’t it?
