Defense & Free Throws Defeat Duke

Today’s game against Duke was the first time I’ve sat down and watched a complete hoops game this season.

It seems like I picked a good time to start eh?  The Jackets defeated the hated Dookies 71-67.

You might ask me…”How does a team lose to UGA on Tuesday night and beat Duke on Saturday afternoon?”

Well…my response at this point in the season would be, “Coaching…or lack of it.”

Any team that is skilled enough to beat Duke is skilled enough to beat a UGA team that may not even have a full roster of scholarship players.

So what happened against Duke?

Its simple…defensive hustle for 40 minutes and getting to the free throw line enough times to hit 22 of 28 attempts.

Duke was held to 6 of 28 behind the arc and were out rebounded 38 to 32.  The Jackets then nailed all their free throws down the stretch to hold onto a slim lead.

The final score tilted the Jackets way in spite of a late turnover that resulted from the fact that the Jackets had used up all their timeouts earlier in the game and didn’t have any available in crunch time.

I know full well that I’m being harsh on the coaching staff right now.  They deserve it, in my opinion.  The offense has no identity, we can’t run a fast break, and inbounding plays are an adventure on the wild side every time we attempt one.

I give all credit to the players, who I’ll continue to support and cheer through thick or thin.  They played hard and to the bitter end today…and beat #5 Duke in front of a national ESPN audience.

The game ball goes to Gani Lawal…21 points and 9 rebounds while shooting 8 of 9 from the field and 5 of 6 from the charity stripe.  His thunderous put back slam late in the game put Tech ahead of Duke and brought the crowd to its feet.  Well done Gani!

Go Jackets!

This team just won despite the coaching. As much as I hate coach K, you could absolutely see the difference in how the teams played. The off ball movement was pretty stagnant for tech as we just seem to run a lot of isolation, while dook looked like everyone on the court had a purpose all the time. You can really see the talent on this young Tech team though… hope it works out for us!

and first… that game was fun though…

Why did swarm rush the court… swarm sucks… we are 17th in the nation on the books, and we beat duke in 2007. What ever… I guess it was a big win.

I enjoyed the game. I also was impressed with the dogs against ky.

PH was surely “into” the game. I sometimes dog him for a loss but this time I congratulate him on a win!

PH deserves no credit for this win. I will give this team its due. It plays hard defense every game. It’s not a lack of effort. It is total disorganization on the offensive end. Once again we had to call timeout when trying to inbound the ball from the sideline. I see no plays being run. Talent will win a few games, even against good teams. But Tuesday’s game will stick in my craw for a long time. That should have been a 20 point blowout. The fact is that Mr. Fox showed later today that he can flat coach. Sure would love to see that at the Flats.

66-73 you LOST to UGA this week.

Paul Hewitt is now 4-6 against UGA.

The really bad situation for Georgia tek is that the NCAA has put Georgia tek on NCAA PROBATION.

APR 914

Academic Progress Rate has SANCTIONS, in this case limits Georgia tek to only 11 Scholarships.

That is such a misnomer at Georgia tek under Paul Hewitt anyway, becuase none of your THUGS such as Javarius Crittenton and Stephon Marbury etc have ever graduated Georgia tek.

They had no intentions of graduating. They ALL flunk out of Georgia tek.

You Hewitt bashers suck. Blow it out your A$$ and especially the phatom blogger. If you aren’t gonna syupport the team turn over the blog to someone who cares and pays attention.

You aren’t the 7th best team in FG%age defense without coaching. You don’t beat Duke at their game without it being coaching. you really think those young players knew how to execute a press all game before they got here? You Hewitt bashers are crazy. Still not happy. You have no clue about Hoops, which is evident by our blogger who doesnt even follow the games and finally writes about one of them.

Thats classic a UGA fan talking smack about academics……still laughing about that one.

Sorry to come over here and piddle around, but I needed to say this…that was/is the sorriest Duke performance/team I’ve seen in I don’t know when. How in blazes did they get ranked so high? If that’s, or was, the #4 team in the country, then Georgia’s…well, better than unranked.

Waiting to see Mark Bradley’s take – if he bothers to have one – on the Georgia/Kentucky game. OK, I’m outahere.

what happened is you had Favor in the building and I am not talking about Derrick; Mark Price and John Salley were there as well as the rest of the ‘85 team that breeds f a v o r and knows how to win. It rubbbed off and if GT could somehow retain one of those team members from the ‘85 team to consult and sit on the bench you would see more of this winning. It is that simple

Tech hoops,

I’m a Hewitt basher but I support my team. I seriously wish coach PHew would take the next Cadillac Escalade outta town.

I was at the game yesterday and I thought throughout the whole game that we would lose because of something coach PHew would do. I feel like we won inspite of PHew not because of him.

@Tech hoops

Are you somehow affiliated with CPH, thus your support for him? Have you not been around since ‘05? I like CPH as a person but his numbers don’t lie. Tech has spent a lot of money on him and got nothing in return (except ‘05).

Tech’s defense under PH has usually been good. Offensive production is usually bad. Overall, I see a lot of improvement:

1. We had a timeout left with under 2 minutes to go. We did use it at 1:11
2. Less shuffling of players, longer blocks of time on court between subbing.
3. Some DNP coach’s decision! I love some of the guys on the bench but everyone doesn’t need to play every game.

We still need some offensive plays that generate lay-ups or dunks.
All of our set plays end up with jump-shots.

Congrats & keep improving the coaching and execution.

paul phew is worse the our coach from the late 70’s. phew u is no dwyne morrison. he WISHES he was that good of a coach.

only thing phew had on dwayne is better players. in fairness to dwayne state of ga was not the hotbed of talens as it is now. And this was before atlanta became an nba city.

AND for those of you who criticize bc keep in mind that…

-bobby didnt competed in a watered down version of the acc like today’s acc.
-the smaller acc had better coaches back then. bc coached againts the likes of the dean an lefty for instance.
-gt didnt play the patty cake schedule that phew plays. we played the kansas’s an gonzaga’s etc…
-bobby crimins is the third winningest coach in the acc.
-under bc we went to 10 straight ncaa’s. of bc’s 19 years we went to either the ncaa or nit 14-15 of those years. i do believe we turned down an invite to the nit one year after an ncaa snub.
-didnt bobby have like 9 acc rookies of the year in a row at gt? for awhile gt owned that award under bc.
-if nothing else bc knew how to develop guards… in particular pg’s. correct me if i am wrong but doesnt john barry hold the acc assist mark still?

than we come to phew. we hired phew to be an improvement over bc. what we ended up with is the BCA Poster Child for reasons to NOT hire a black coach just because he is black.

folks keep saying that phew is a nice guy! sorry but i dont see it. now bobby cremins is and was a ‘nice guy’. you know the guy who went quitly. the guy who loved gt. the guy who donated MILLIONS to gt. the guy who was never satisfied with his seasons. the guy who had both white an black players on his squad.

phew a nice guy? you mean the guy who is robbing gt of his salary ever year? the guy who puts his own personal agenda of the BCA and putting ‘black’ players (his own words) in the nba? the coach who now shuns alumni/ student contact? the guy who now is known for being surly and egotistical to a fault? oh! you mean that guy!

bc is a nice guy. phew… well phew is phew

tech hoops if a fan of phew NOT gt. obviously. even a child could look at what phew has done at gt and scream….. underacheiver.

i think that once phew got his cushy forever contract the real phew came through. unfortunately the assistant coaches that really coached the team left and …..

phew was exposed for the horrible coach and not so nice person he really is.

by taking the gt program down he certainly can NOT be called a nice person.

thanks phew for …

last in the acc
last in the acc in acedemis

thanks for nothing you jerk

I am a big time college football fan but have to say that the 2009-2010 college football coaching carousel (climaxed by Lane Kiffen) has provided a horrific example to the 17-22 year old players. I used to think the BCS was a mess!

PH is an African-American Bobby Cremins. Nice guy, great recruiter, but couldn’t coach rats to a pile of Cheetohs.
