Looking back on a decade of GT football…

While driving around today, I heard the local radio pundits talking about the biggest stories, highs, and lows of the past decade in sports.

Of course, most of their comments were about UGA accomplishments.

The best thing about having this blog is the fact that I don’t have to call those guys and sit on hold.

So here goes…the biggest and best highlights that jump immediately to mind from the past 10 years of GT football…

2000 @ Clemson – George Godsey to Kerry Watkins with 7 seconds left, to beat a Clemson team that was in the national title hunt.  Tech fans still call this one “The Catch”.

2000 @ UGA – Godsey and Darryl Smith lead Tech to a 27-15 win, making it Three In A Row.  I still have my “Tech Fans for Donnan” shirt.  This was the first (and last) time my wife went to a game in Athens.

2003 vs Auburn – The first game at newly renovated Bobby Dodd Stadium saw a freshman (Reggie Ball) lead the Jackets to a 17-3 win over Auburn.  This ticket stub is framed and hanging in the wall in my basement.

2004 @ Clemson – The Calvin Johnson Coming Out Party…I was at this one and it was complete bedlam at the end.  Clemson messes up a punt snap, Tech recovers, Reggie to Calvin on a fade for the win…the Clemson fans we ran into in the parking lot didn’t know they’d lost until we told them…

2005 @ Auburn – Another beatdown of the tiggers…23-14.  One of the best away game weekend experiences ever!

2005 @ Miami – The Jackets go on the road and stun #3 Miami on their own field.  I was on campus when the team buses rolled back onto campus.  It was about 3am, but that didn’t stop me from smoking a victory cigar.

2007 @ Notre Dame – The Jackets pound the Domers 33-3 in the shadow of Touchdown Jesus.

2008 vs Florida State – We finally beat the Noles on a fumble recovery in our own endzone.  After years of having all the breaks go against us, we finally have the ball bounce our way.

2008 @ UGA – Down 26-12 at the half, on the road, the Jackets roar back to win 45-42 and end the UGA win streak.

2009 @ FSU – The craziest game I’ve ever witnessed in person…over 1000 yards of offense, almost 100 points, and a 78 minute lightning delay were some of the highlights of a 49-44 Tech win.

2009 vs Virginia Tech – Tech gets all the way turn’t up and beats the #4 Hokies at home 28-23.

2009 ACC Championship Game – Nesbitt and Dwyer carry the Jackets past CJ Spiller and the Clemson Tigers 28-23, propelling Tech into its first BCS Bowl ever and its first Orange Bowl in decades.

So that’s about a dozen games that jump to mind immediately in the past decade.

I listed them chronologically.  If I had to rank the top three in importance I’d probably list them as follows:

  1. 2009 ACC Championship Game
  2. 2008 @ UGA
  3. 2008 vs FSU

The ACC title and BCS Bowl bid is bigger than any single rivalry game, so the win over Clemson in Tampa ranks as my #1 win of the past decade.  A very close second is Paul Johnson taking the Jackets into Sanford Stadium last year and breaking the drought that started back in 2001.  And for personal reasons (I’m married to a Nole) I have to rate the 2008 win over FSU in the top three.  We hadn’t beaten those guys since they joined the ACC and they’d ripped out our hearts on more than one occasion.  I’m not ashamed to admit that I might have shed a tear after that win…it meant alot…

Now…its no mere coincidence that more than a few of the high points in the last decade involved 2008 and 2009 games.  While Gailey had some big wins, they weren’t program changers like we’ve seen under Johnson.  We have a completely different GT program in 2009 than we did under O’Leary in 2000 and Gailey in 2005…other years when the program appeared to be turning the corner.

Right now I’m hoping that Paul Johnson has the same New Year’s Resolution that I do…Make 2010 Better Than 2009.

Go Jackets!

Beat Iowa!

You gotta include this year’s win at Doak-Campbell because we’d never won there and the play of Josh Nesbitt.

Chris,

Great list. I’d also add the 08 thumping of Miami. That may have been the game where the majority of Tech fans realized what we had in CPJ.

I’m also going to email you and beg for images of the great memorabilia you mentioned. I run a site called Vintage GT Memorabilia, and those would be great additions. . .

I’m excited as Mark Richt in the Carpets of Dalton showroom about the upcoming decade for GT football.

On an unrelated note, I’m glad the ACC played some bowl games against the cupcake SEC. I was kinda worried Tech might be the one ACC team with a bowl win. Thanks SEC!

Nice to see we got a win again in the Peach Bowl……now we don’t have to listen about the 4 year drought anymore.

Happy New Years to everyone. Looking forward to the Yellow Jackets adding to their successful season with a win in the Orange Bowl Game against those Hawkeyes.

bulldog, it is always nice to see you obsessing over GT. I assume you spend more time on our blog that UGA’s. but congrats on the advocare 100 independence bowl championship. that’s another thing the dogs have this decade that the jackets don’t.

Though your mythical ACC championship from the win over us seems to be up for debate after two teams that beat you (and UT was a beat down) lost handily to 2 ACC teams.

but anyway, back to the list, I’d have to put the win over Virginia Tech this year up there. It had been decades since beating a top 5 opponent

All I know is that GT is going to a BCS bowl and UGA went to some toilet bowl this year. This despite attracting significantly better athletes than GT, since everyone knows it is tough academically at GT whereas a chimp could possibly be valedictorian at UGA if he stops scratching himself enough

A few random wins in a decade is sad. Good thing those guys who played in the 1950’s are about all gone because they would be disgusted with the last decade!

Chris, I’d have to agree with your top three (and in the order you put them). We have plans to commemorate several of the games on your list with drawings/prints/shirts in the near future, just like we did with Sisson’s kick against Virginia in 1990 (”Toe Meets Leather”). Brings back some great memories. I got to see the ‘03 Auburn and the ‘09 Virginia Tech games in person. Maybe you could also throw in the 472 yard rushing onslaught against Miami in ‘08?

“Toe Meets Leather” now available at http://www.stinGTees.com.

First, this is the real Buzz that posts here (the other is a poser).

Happy New Year’s to all and yes that includes the bulldog fans that have nothing better than post on our blogs.

My hopes for the GT program for the 2010 decade is:

a) GT fans to stop obsessing over UGA. We are not in the SEC anymore! Focus on the items that put you in contention for BCS games.
b) a defense that is 75% as good as our offense
c) Paul Johnson to win up 95 games in the regular season.
d) three conference titles
e) one National Championship

It saddens me to say that I think that item a would be the hardest to achieve

The hiring of chan gomer gailey was the one of the dumbest things in the history of Tech. The only thing dumber was the fools that actually supported gomer and propped him up while he destroyed Tech football and wasted six long years. Especially the idiots on the Hive. Anyone that ever supported or defended gomer in any way should get on their knees and apologize to the Tech community.

Thank God and Greyhound that the the sorriest excuse for a coach in the history of Tech is gone forever.

I was at the Notre Dame game and loved every minute of it.As an alumni of Tech, I am also an alumni of Appalachian State in Boone N.C. If you recall, the same day we were beating N D ,my Moutaineers were in Ann Arbor in a matchup with Michigan—we all know the outcome of that contest.I had a good day that Saturday.

Looking back on a decade huh, well…

Overall crap, minus a couple decent seasons.

Closed it out with a loss to what you all claim to be a terrible Georgia team, so…

Right on track and pretty much typical.

Leave the decade analysis for the actual ending of a decade which is next year rather than following the rest of the ignorant media frenzy. The millenium did not begin until we passed into 2001 not the celebrations that occured in 2000. Decades, centuries, milleniums, etc. begin with numbers ending in 1 not zero. Do your own academic research and you will see that we continue as a society to look like a bunch of idiots to the world at large that follows the true ending of time periods. We used to understand this ourselves until the modern media began to screw everything up.

Thus the very first game you mentioned did not happen this decade but last decade and who is to say that next year we will not have many games to supplant some of those listed? The decade ends next year!!! Unless your math is like the UGA method of not counting stuff.

Beating Georgia to end the drought and maintain Tech’s
8-game streak against Georgia (1949-1956) is the biggest
win of the decade unquestionably. If Georgia had won
they would have had an equal streak against Tech.

Now you girly boys from UGA are saying something about my little Techster buddies, need I remind you how many times your little bully doggies lost to the big bad Gators over the last 20 years. I think your players pea in their pants just thinking about next year. You haven’t won anything and we won two National Championships in three years. It’s obvious who the high school team is, and by the way if we catch you trying to twist the ankles of our QB next year, you’ll carry yours off on a stretcher.

How about that 51-7 victory over the Dawgs? Oh wait, that a Dawg victory. Well there is winning 9 out of 10 against UGA! Oh thats right,
it was the Dawgs who have won 9 out of the last 10. But we DID win this
year right? What? The final this year was 30-24 Georgia? But how could
that be? We have Paul “Tiny” Johnson.

As I read through the first couple posts, I found myself thinking “if ‘M’ were on here, he’d write something about Gailey.” Then I saw he did. I have to say he’s right. The firing of Gailey / hiring of CPJ is probably the biggest event of the past decade. Without that, the top three significant events never would have happened.

I hope I’m right, but I think that the biggest moment of the 2010 – 2019 decade will have been the hiring of CPJ in 2008. GT definitely has good days ahead.
