Idle Ramblings While Watching Army / Navy

I’m watching Army vs Navy and I’m pulling for the guys from West Point.  I know Coach Johnson came to us from Navy, but I have to pull for Army due to family connections now.

All in all, its fun to watch a couple of teams run the triple option against each other.  Unfortunately its looking like Army is running out of steam.  The Middies are pulling ahead now after trailing Army for most of the game.  Ricky Dobbs just set the NCAA quarterback rushing TD record.  That’s pretty impressive.

Quick thoughts on a few things…

The Heisman Trophy

I think Suh and Gerhart are obviously the two best players in the country.  They should lead the voting if the people casting ballots stick to the spirit of the award and don’t let it turn into the popularity contest that has tarnished the award over the past 5-10 years.

Lets look at a snippet of the Mission Statement on the Heisman Trophy website…

The Heisman Memorial Trophy annually recognizes the outstanding college football player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity. Winners epitomize great ability combined with diligence, perseverance, and hard work.

Now…I don’t see anything there that says, “the best player on the best team in the country.”  So I don’t see any reason why the winning candidate has to come from Alabama or Texas.

If Ingram (not even the best runningback in the country) or McCoy (not even the best QB in the country) take the award home over Suh or Gerhart it will be a travesty and another nail in the coffin for the Heisman Trophy.

Cincy & Notre Dame

I really thought the Bearcats might have had a chance to give Florida a game…considering the Gators have struggled on offense all season and may be in a funk after getting pantsed by Bama.

Kelly leaving the team for Notre Dame makes this probably the least compelling BCS match up outside of maybe the TCU vs Boise State game.  I just don’t see that team holding it together with their coach jumping ship.  It also remains to be seen how many assistants Kelly may take with him…

Orange Bowl Ticket Sales

Its expected that Iowa will sell out their allotment and bring a ton of fans to Miami.  They have a history of traveling well.

Georgia Tech ticket sales are moving briskly considering a large portion of the GT fanbase just returned from Tampa and the ACC championship game.

Personally, I won’t be able to make the Orange Bowl.  I have some crucial work timelines which begin January 4th, right after the holidays are over.

Georgia Tech fans will buy out the GT allotment and will travel to this game even though its effectively the second bowl game in a month for the fanbase.  Unlike the Iowa folks, GT followers won’t have the luxury of saving up all of their road game budget and vacation time for one big trip.  We’ll have to do it twice…

Bowls After January 1st…

Speaking of Orange Bowl tickets…what in “hades” is up with all these bowls that are popping up after January 1st?

The following bowls are being played on January 2…

  • The International Bowl
  • The Papajohns.com Bowl
  • The Cotton Bowl
  • The Liberty Bowl
  • The Alamo Bowl

Seriously?  What’s the point of this?

Then we look at the remaining BCS Bowls…

  • The Fiesta on Monday January 4
  • The Orange on Tuesday January 5
  • The BCS Championship on Thursday January 7

How many fans, in this economy, can afford to travel to a bowl game in the middle of the week and take time off from work?

Its obvious that TV revenue is more important than scheduling games that can be attended by fans of the programs.

I understand it…but I think it stinks…

Your analysis if flawed. If you’re a GREAT player you find the way to help your team win. There is no way a player from a team with 4 losses should be considered. If that’s the case there is thousands of players that should be finalist. Losing records open up a flood gate for teams with great players. There has to be a standard to choose by. Break down Suh of Nebraska and see how he did in the games before Texas. Look at the amount of carries Gerhart had and the competition level. All 5 players are worthy and great players, it’s the amount of votes that count. The media is the most bias source of votes and shouldn’t be allowed to vote. The general public should be allowed to choose the Heisman winner. Look what they did with the Presidential election last year, the media sent a buffoon into the White House. Trashing the other 4 players to make your own look better is stupid. McCoy-worthy, Ingram=worthy,Suh=worthy, Gerhart=worthy, Tebow=worthy. All are fine candidates and will make a great winner. Stop bashing and promoting your own bias cchoices please AJC

Tough for the Cadets … son is Army in Iraq. Heisman has slipped like the bowls, pandering to sponsorship. Cincy-ND – really rambling for filler there. We’ll be well represented in Miami – and I hope for a proper showing from the players. Re: bowls — see earlier Heisman reference.

McCoy or Ingram would be ho-hum typical Heisman winners. Suh is a special player. Gerhart is the best dragging bodies, power runner I can recall since Jim Brown.

Chris, Boise St. vs TCU is way more compelling than a pretty insignificant Orange Bowl. TCU is a better football team than Georgia Tech and probably should be playing GT. It is obvious that the BCS powers that be did not want a TCU from a non-BCS conference beating the hell out of GT from the ACC. I realize you are loyal to your team but the Orange Bowl will be the least attended and least watched of the BCS bowls. With a month to prepare Iowa’s #11 defense will stop your TO. Tech is nowhere near physical enough to beat Iowa. They got manhandled and out manned by a 5 loss UGA team. GT is not near man enough for Iowa.

“TCU is a better football team than Georgia Tech and probably should be playing GT.”

TCU may be a better team than Georgia Tech. I believe they probably are. The reason for TCU playing Boise State instead of playing in the Orange Bowl is that The BCS collaborators could not stand the embarrassment of Boise State *and* TCU both finishing unbeaten and being ranked by polls or rating systems as the #1 team in the couintry.

Iowa’s offense kept opponents in the game. Their only games over 30 points were Iowa State (35-3) and Indiana (45-24). Northern Iowa was a 17-16 win, and Arkansas State was 27-24. Those teams played them as well as Big-10 opponents, except for Indiana and Minnesota (12-0 game). Overall they averaged scoring 23.1 ppg. They scored 10 in the loss to Northwestern.

I watched 2 of their games, plus part of a 3rd, and they were thrillers. Should be an interesting matchup vs. Ga. Tech.

2. Tostitos Fiesta Bowl
Jan. 4, Phoenix, 8 p.m., FOX
Boise State vs. TCU

# Three Reasons To Watch This Bowl: 1) Really, this might be the national championship game. These two are playing better than the Longhorns and the Tide. 2) These might be the two most complete teams in America. TCU leads the nation in defense and is fourth in offense and first in kickoff returns. Boise State is No. 1 in scoring offense, 13th in total defense and ninth in punting. 3) Jerry Hughes and the TCU pass rush vs. Boise State’s offensive line that has allowed the fewest number of sacks in America.
# And Why You Should Spend Your Time Roasting Your Chestnuts: We’re not going to learn much. The winner will have beaten a non-BCS team, while the loser will have lost to a non-BCS team. Last year’s Poinsettia Bowl wasn’t that entertaining.
# Three Names To Drop That’ll Make The Perky Girl In Accounting Want To Take You Into The Storeroom During The Holiday Party For Smooches: 1) Jeremy Kerley, WR/PR TCU, 2) Ryan Winterswyk, DE Boise State, 3) Daryl Washington, LB TCU
# First-Thought Pick That Might Change In The Next Few Days On A Whim: TCU 20 … Boise State 17

Exactly Delbert D. “The winner will have beaten a non-BCS team, while the loser will have lost to a non-BCS team” is the key statement in the above blurb. That is exactly why they matched Boise and TCU. TCU with their Defense, Offense, and Special Teams would have been the nightmare matchup for GT and BSU would give UF or Cincy all they could handle.

One of the more common reasons stated for the lack of a playoff system is that it will cause the season to drag on too long. However, if you look at the bowl schedule, we’re allowing the networks to do just that. Personally, I would like to see ALL of the bowl games completed by January 1st with the possible exception of the MNC game, which should be completed no later than January 2nd or 3rd (if the 2nd is on a Sunday). No way should major bowl games be held on non-holiday weekdays. It makes it too difficult for fans to attend.

Army-Navy: I understand your personal connnections. But you have to pull for Navy. It’s cool to see CP”Goferit”J’s spread triple option flexbone continue to work its magic.

Heisman: Any great player on any team that loses 4 games – in the Pac 10 no less – is gonna be overshadowed by two other finalists from unbeaten teams (much less a former winner and ESPN-god also amongst the five). Suh is awesome…no doubt. But Nebraska lost to Iowa State. And there’s a reason why the trophy depicts someone *carrying* the ball. Just like ‘chicks dig the longball’, voters dig the touchdowns. Besides, Suh has picked up a load of other trophies this week and will get a BIG check in April at the Draft. Ingram has been good/great against the toughest defenses in the country and is a worthy winner. Unlike that fool Ron Dayne…it still burns me up that Joe – and GT – didn’t get THEIR first one back in ‘99.

Bowls after 1 Jan: THIS is the real travesty. There are WAY too many bowls and there should be none after 1 January, especially crappy games no one cares about. These games, along with many other reasons, are going to be the death-knell to the bowl system and that day can’t get here fast enough.

The Cotton Bowl has always been a January bowl, with just one exception (the one for the 1966 season was played on Dec. 31). Occasionally the game is played on the second instead of the first. It’s happened a few times in the bowl’s history. No big deal.

I agree with the past 2 bloggers. The offensive lines at Ala, Fla, and Texas are mammoth and contributed hugely to their candidates successes. Don’t get me wrong they are speacial players. But Gerhart did his running behind a lesser line and Suh had to contend with double teaming and 10 guys trying to stop him. Without Spiller on the list, again it was a big football factory popularity contest.

As a transplanted Big 10 fan (i know, we can’t count), I have no dog in this hunt.
However, after reading all of these posts to Tech stories about UGA being the ACC champs, why not work a trade to get UGA into the ACC.
The ACC could trade one of its thug teams, say FSU or Miami, and UGA would be in a league that apparently is better sited for them.
The down side, UGA could no longer brag about being in the TOUGH SEC. They don’t compete any more but they are in it.

Being a former Marine, I always watch the Army/Navy game with interest. Of course I am happy Navy won – as they have the last 8 years.

Watching how Army was trying to defense the triple option was an insight in how Iowa is going to do it against Tech. I am sure Ferentz was watching the game yesterday, even though Army was out-manned.

Clemson tried the same strategy as Army – get the 3 biggest Defensive linemen they have and try to plug/crash the middle so the dive play is useless. Then try to crash so Nesbitt can’t scoot forward or outside.

Now CPJ, as the smart guy I know he is, is planning for this. But he needs to have a plethora of plays ready to exploit this piling up on the line that Iowa is going to do.

He may have to pass more. I did take thorough notice that Navy, running the same offense, has a much better short and intermediate passing game than Tech does.

But this is exactly what is missing from the Tech offense and they sorely need this. I hope CPJ puts some of this type of passing in the gameplan for the Orange bowl.

If he does, he might just catch Iowa flat-footed.

The future success of the Tech offense depends on additional passing.

It is also nice to know that Tech has primarily recruited defensive players for next year – Lord knows they need them.

Cecil34

December 13th, 2009
10:51 am

Also, I might add that Tech needs to run more mis-direction plays – you see the whole opposing defense running to whatever side the motion A-back is running to – Tech needs more counter plays to that movement because the backside is generally unattended.

I watched that Army – Navy game and it was painful!!! There was more action in Dean’s Smith’s 4 Corner offense than in that game. So my question is: What is the difference between Navy and GT’s offense? Level of players? Army defense? Tech’s offense is way more exciting than that junk on TV yesterday.

Stunned that all the techies with all the money they make from all their extremely lucrative careers cant afford 2 trips to fla….save for a 3 or 4 day trip…laughable!

And why cant all college football fans quit blaming the BCS for b owl selections…..once they have matched up 1 and 2….rest of the bowls select in order…the shame is conference tie ins which award little better than average major bowl slots! In techs defense…you should thank God they do!
Otherwise your streak of 43 years of no major bowl appearances would continue!

UGA in the ACC…never…however it would guarantee UGA a much better record each and every year….EVERY tech fan with ANY knowledge of the history of the school will readily admit tech made a monumental mistake when they left the SEC….and they will NEVER be allowed back into the SEC!
We will continue to compete in the strongest conference in America..PERIOD….and while we will have a tech like year at times (7-5) we will know that it was against the best…and we will also KNOW that the winner of the pitiful ACC it kinda like being the prettiest hog in the pen!

30-24……tech…2nd best college football team in the state of Georgia….for 14 of the past 18 years!

Hawkeye1 is obviously not an Iowa fan, or he would know that Iowa will bring 45,000 to the OB. They have already booked some kind of space for a pre-game pep-rally with the understanding that it can accomodate 45,000. They brought that many the last time they played in a major bowl. So the Orange Bowl will definitely not be the least attended bowl. I doubt that more than 25,000 Tech fans will be there, but I hope I am wrong. Still, for a school and fan base the size of Tech, 25,000 isn’t bad, especially considering so many went to Tampa last weekend. We certainly had more than 25,000, however, for the 99 Gator Bowl against ND and for the 90 Citrus Bowl, where there were probably 50,000 Tech fans (or at least fans decked out in Tech colors) there.

Watched the Army-Navy tilt yesterday. I was in the Army which is why CPJ being from Navy gave me one more reason to pull for Navy. Then today, I drove to Atlanta, had a couple of Varsity chili dogs and then drove around campus. Damn, it has grown in the past 45 years. As luck would have it I happened to drive by where the Ramblin Reck was being taken out for a test drive (in preparation for the Orange Bowl, I presume). Anyway, it was a fun day and brought back lots of good memories – Bobby Dodd, Bear Bryant, Joe Namath, a young Vince Dooley, Kim King and Bill Curry – both of whom were classmates along with Randall Edmonds, Giles Smith, and Larry Goode.

Anyway its the Christmas season and in that spirit I wish to all, even the dawgs and including the Hawkeyes, a great holiday season.

If Tech had maybe won one or two more games or so in 1999 Hamilton would have won the Heisman. It’s hard to see a player having a bigger impact on a Team (#1 offense, 45 points or so per game, 500 yards, tons of comeback victories). Bill Lothridge (GT) what came in 2nd early 60’s behind Roger Staub. (Naval Academy). Dobbs against ND showed a good arm with a nice touch showing the potential Tech has on it’s total offense.

30- 24 just means that the Georgia Bulldogs at 7-5 are still better than a 11-2 Tech team with an inflated record accomplished by playing an inferior schedule in a weak third rate conference!

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

U.S. District Judge Bill Duffey on Monday said he hoped Atlanta’s two homegrown terrorists would accept responsibility and express remorse for what they once plotted to do — wage violent jihad.

But neither Ehsanul Islam Sadequee nor Syed Haris Ahmed made such concessions.

Ahmed, a 25-year-old former Georgia Tech student, said he now believes terrorist acts are not the message of Islam, but Duffey wouldn’t buy it. He sentenced Ahmed to 13 years in prison, saying he was “committed to conduct and values we abhor.”

The two slight, bearded men first met at the Al-Farooq Masjid on 14th Street near the Tech campus. In 2005, they took a bus to Canada and plotted with like-minded extremists, talking openly of attacking oil refineries, even disabling GPS satellites with lasers.

A month later, they drove to Washington and made amateurish videos of area landmarks. Ahmed later told agents the videos were uploaded on the Internet and sent to “the brothers” overseas.

In the summer of 2005, Ahmed traveled to Pakistan believing he would die a martyr fighting the Indian army in the mountains of Kashmir. But once there he chose not to join a terrorist training camp and returned home.

Syed Haris Ahmed, Georgia Tech student, asked Duffey to convert to Islam, an invitation the judge refused. “I will not adopt your view of God and what it calls you to do,” he said.

Duffey noted that Ahmed tried to belittle his actions by portraying himself as a naive, impressionable young man.

“But you’re a smart, calculating … and committed young man,” Duffey said. “You’re committed to conduct and values we abhor.”

Tech students victimized by crime this month

By Christian Boone

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

On Thursday morning, Tech freshman Zhao Wang was stabbed, though not seriously wounded, as he made a pre-dawn run to the grocery store. Five days earlier two students were robbed at gunpoint while walking along North Avenue.

They weren’t the only Tech students to be touched by crime since the first of the month. On Dec. 2, at least four undergrads were robbed in their Home Park apartment just off-campus.

The latest incidents have followed a familiar pattern this year around the Georgia Tech campus. Crime seemed to peak in the spring, when five Tech students were robbed at gunpoint over a two-week period.

Four arrests were made in conjunction with the muggings early last summer, leading outgoing Atlanta Police Chief Richard Pennington to note there had been no attacks since the arrests.

But then, less than a month later, two separate muggings occurred within 24 hours at the same downtown intersection just south of campus. And within nine days in early October four students were robbed in separate Home Park stick-ups.

“I think [the students] have become easy targets for some of the criminals,” Pennington acknowledged at a press conference.

Georgia Tech leads the pack, but this is probably one contest where the midtown university wishes it didn’t place so high.

According to the AJC story: After several months of high-profile crimes on or near downtown college campuses, FBI statistics for 2008 released on Monday show that the violence is nothing new.

Georgia Tech police reported 21 violent crimes last year, more than any of the other 19 Georgia college and university police departments reporting crime numbers to the FBI.

BuLLdawg

December 16th, 2009

The four schools with higher crime rates were Yale University (110 crimes per 1000), Georgia Institute of Technology (106), Stanford University (91), and Dartmouth College (81).

Midtown does have a particular challenge.

“When you look at where most of these crimes are committed, which is near Georgia Tech and Atlantic Station, I would have to say that [criminals preying on college students] is where a significant amount of the problem lies,” Cobb says.

APD Maj. Khirus Williams, commander of Zone 5, says about 15 laptops are stolen from cars in the area each week. He points out arrests aren’t helping.

“Last year, we arrested 116 persons for larceny from autos. Collectively, they have been arrested 2,250 times,” Williams says via e-mail. “Thus, an arrest means nothing to them.”

Man Robbed At Gunpoint Near Georgia Tech Campus

ATLANTA — Atlanta police are investigating another armed robbery that happened near the Georgia Tech campus.

According to an email released to students by Georgia Tech, the victim was approached by four males in a newer model, black Mercedes Benz near the corner of Hunnicutt Street and McAfee Street around 2:30 a.m. The two men in the rear of the car got out and pointed handguns at the victim. After robbing the victim, they fled eastbound on Merritt Street.

As I watched the Army-Navy game, I realized that the Navy-Mizzou bowl game will be a very good barometer of GT-Iowa. Each bowl features the triple-option against a Big10 team with a good defense (calling all things relative as Iowa’s D is better than Mizzou’s, but Tech’s O is better than Navy’s). Still, we should see some big Mizzou boys trying to plug-up the run and Navy attacking with mis-direction & passes. Should be fun to watch!

Orange Bowl NOT SOLD OUT. Independence Bowl for UGA, is SOLD OUT.

1990 Georgia Tech did NOT play in any MAJOR BOWL game.

Georgia Tech has NOT even played in a MAJOR BOWL game in 43 years.

43 years.

And, you cannot sell out the Orange Bowl.

Pitiful Georgia Tech fans (both of you.)

Georgia Tech has played in 13 Consecutive Bowl Games, but Tech has LOST more than HALF THE GAMES, 7 losses, 5 wins.

5-7 last 13 bowl games for Georgia Tech.

1955 is the last time Georgia Tech WON A MAJOR BOWL GAME.

56 YEARS SINCE GEORGIA TECH WON A MAJOR BOWL GAME.

22-15-0 Georgia Tech All-Time in Bowl Games – MOSTLY CRUDDY BOWL GAMES.

25-16-3 UGA All-Time in Bowl Games.

UGA WON MAJOR BOWL JUST 2 YEARS AGO, SUGAR BOWL to end up Number 2 in the Final AP Poll.

UGA also in MAJOR BOWL just 4 years ago.

UGA ALSO WON ANOTHER MAJOR BOWL JUST 7 YEARS AGO.

UGA has been to EIGHT (8) MAJOR BOWL GAMES SINCE GEORGIA TECH LAST WAS IN A MAJOR BOWL GAME.

.602 Winning Percentage in Bowl Games for UGA.

.595 winning percentage in bowl games for Tech.

13th Bowl Game in a Row for both UGA and Georgia Tech.

5-7 Georgia Tech is 5-7 in these 13 consecutive bowl games.

10-2 UGA is 10-2 in these 13 Consecutive Bowl Games.

Don’t give me this crap that Georgia Tech is great in bowl games.

There is NO COMPARISON.

1990 ORANGE BOWL COLORADO BEAT NOTRE DAME. Georgia Tech was NOT EVEN INVITED.

Georgia Tech has NEVER BEEN RANKED NUMBER ONE (1) IN THE FINAL AP POLL.

Georgia Tech has had SEVEN (7) SEASONS IN WHICH GEORGIA TECH LOST EVERY GAME.

UGA HAS WON THE ORANGE BOWL MORE RECENTLY THAN GEORGIA TECH HAS.

Georgia Tech has played 6 games against teams NOT EVEN IN A BOWL GAME.

FAR AND AWAY THE STINKIEST SCHEDULE OF ANY TEAM IN AMERICA.

10 hours 668 miles to Shreveport Louisiana. I-20 West. UGA has been in The Independence Bowl 1 time and we Won 18 years ago. Georgia Tech has never been in The Independence Bowl.

Louisiana Boardwalk on the Red River known for its 5 Riverboat Casinos, films, Blues Music, and Classic Southern City Charm was the last stronghold of The South in the War of Northern Aggression. Sea level 40 to 60 degrees, and rain.

What would Georgia Tech fans (both of you) know about The Independence Bowl when Tech has never been there.

5-7 Bowl Record Georgia Tech last 13 bowl games in a row now.

10-2 Bowl Record UGA last 13 bowl games in a row now.

Even if Georgia Tech wins your bowl game this season, you will be 6-7 LOSING RECORD.

So quit all this B.S. about Tech being in a bowl game 12 years in a row before this year.

I see 5 SEC teams in the Top 15, but there isn’t even any ACC team.

I see 3 Big XII teams, but where are any of the ACC teams ?

I see 3 Big Ten (11) teams, but zero ACC teams, right ?

I see 2 Big East teams, but where are any of the ACC teams ?

I see 1 Independent, and no ACC teams.

I see 1 PAC-10 team, but I cannot find any ACC MEDIOCRITY.

Right Al ? That what you said ? Mediocrity in history ?

MEDIOCRITY IN HISTORY ?

THAT WOULD BE :

Al, if you subtracted the 60 LOSSES TO UGA Georgia Tech has in HISTORY, then Georgia Tech would not be MEDIOCRITY IN FOOTBALL HISTORY.

But, Georgia Tech would STILL BE 57 WINS BEHIND UGA.

Chris: Your a terrible beat writer… we have the 15th best team in the country in Basketball, and EVERY freakin blog is about football. I like GT football don’t get me wrong, but there’s only one team in the state this year that has a chance to win a NATIONAL championship in a main sport, and that’s GT hoops!!
We have possibly the BEST front court in the Nation, yet no mention of it. Like i told everyone 2 years ago (when i knew wed probably get getting Favors), in 2010 we will at least get to the Elite 8.
Man, what football could be if they only had a playoff system. Here’s a prediction… next year the championship game will have 2 of these teams in it: Oklahoma, Florida, Alabama, Ohio State, USC, Texas. Can you say… BORING!
Nothing in sports beats March Madness! Unless of course the Braves are in the World Series, or the Falcons in the super bowl.
