Idle Ramblings While Watching Army / Navy

I’m watching Army vs Navy and I’m pulling for the guys from West Point.  I know Coach Johnson came to us from Navy, but I have to pull for Army due to family connections now.

All in all, its fun to watch a couple of teams run the triple option against each other.  Unfortunately its looking like Army is running out of steam.  The Middies are pulling ahead now after trailing Army for most of the game.  Ricky Dobbs just set the NCAA quarterback rushing TD record.  That’s pretty impressive.

Quick thoughts on a few things…

The Heisman Trophy

I think Suh and Gerhart are obviously the two best players in the country.  They should lead the voting if the people casting ballots stick to the spirit of the award and don’t let it turn into the popularity contest that has tarnished the award over the past 5-10 years.

Lets look at a snippet of the Mission Statement on the Heisman Trophy website…

The Heisman Memorial Trophy annually recognizes the outstanding college football player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity. Winners epitomize great ability combined with diligence, perseverance, and hard work.

Now…I don’t see anything there that says, “the best player on the best team in the country.”  So I don’t see any reason why the winning candidate has to come from Alabama or Texas.

If Ingram (not even the best runningback in the country) or McCoy (not even the best QB in the country) take the award home over Suh or Gerhart it will be a travesty and another nail in the coffin for the Heisman Trophy.

Cincy & Notre Dame

I really thought the Bearcats might have had a chance to give Florida a game…considering the Gators have struggled on offense all season and may be in a funk after getting pantsed by Bama.

Kelly leaving the team for Notre Dame makes this probably the least compelling BCS match up outside of maybe the TCU vs Boise State game.  I just don’t see that team holding it together with their coach jumping ship.  It also remains to be seen how many assistants Kelly may take with him…

Orange Bowl Ticket Sales

Its expected that Iowa will sell out their allotment and bring a ton of fans to Miami.  They have a history of traveling well.

Georgia Tech ticket sales are moving briskly considering a large portion of the GT fanbase just returned from Tampa and the ACC championship game.

Personally, I won’t be able to make the Orange Bowl.  I have some crucial work timelines which begin January 4th, right after the holidays are over.

Georgia Tech fans will buy out the GT allotment and will travel to this game even though its effectively the second bowl game in a month for the fanbase.  Unlike the Iowa folks, GT followers won’t have the luxury of saving up all of their road game budget and vacation time for one big trip.  We’ll have to do it twice…

Bowls After January 1st…

Speaking of Orange Bowl tickets…what in “hades” is up with all these bowls that are popping up after January 1st?

The following bowls are being played on January 2…

  • The International Bowl
  • The Bowl
  • The Cotton Bowl
  • The Liberty Bowl
  • The Alamo Bowl

Seriously?  What’s the point of this?

Then we look at the remaining BCS Bowls…

  • The Fiesta on Monday January 4
  • The Orange on Tuesday January 5
  • The BCS Championship on Thursday January 7

How many fans, in this economy, can afford to travel to a bowl game in the middle of the week and take time off from work?

Its obvious that TV revenue is more important than scheduling games that can be attended by fans of the programs.

I understand it…but I think it stinks…
