Its the day before the biggest game of the season and I thought I’d resurrect and update an old blog I wrote back in 2001 when I was writing for the now defunct PigskinPost.com website. Despite being almost a decade old, this blog still rings true…and probably will for years to come.
Rivalry week is always Thanksgiving week here in Georgia because that is the week that the Yellow Jackets and Bulldogs suit up and face off on the gridiron. It doesn’t really matter when other teams play their rivalry games. This week is rivalry week in the state of Georgia.
Georgia and Tech hate each other so much that the fans of both schools actually have incorporated it into their respective fight songs. Georgia fans sing, “Glory, Glory to ‘ole Georgia and to Hell with Georgia Tech!” while Tech fans sing, “If I had a son sir, I’ll tell you what he’d do, he would yell To Hell with Georgia! Like his daddy used to do!”
The Jackets and Dawgs first played each other in 1893 (Tech won 28-6) and have battled 103 times since that first meeting. Georgia leads the overall series 59-39-5 although many Georgia fans dispute a few of Tech’s victories during the World War II era and argue that GT had an unfair advantage, or used ringers, in more than a few of those games. Tech fans deny those allegations and simply point to the scores, as they were reported, while claiming the wins as legitimate. So…you see…modern day Tech and UGA fans cannot even agree on the historical series record.
Lacking even a single point of agreement, the relationship between Jackets and Dawgs just goes downhill from there. The feelings between Tech and UGA fans were once described by author Bill Cromartie as “Clean, Old Fashioned Hate”. I have the most recent edition of his book on my coffee table as I write this. It’s a great chronicle of the history of the Georgia vs Georgia Tech football rivalry. During a recent re-reading of Cromartie’s book, a few events jumped out as perfect examples of the “hate” Jackets and Dawgs hold for each other.
Consider the early years of the rivalry:
1893 – Atlanta newspapers report that UGA supporters chant “Well well well, Who can tell, the Tech’s umpire has cheated like hell!”
1899 – Tech and UGA disagree on the final score. UGA says 33-0 and GT says 20-0.
1903 – UGA promises Clemson a bushel of apples for every point in their margin of victory over Tech. The final is 38-0.
1919 – A float in a UGA parade insinuates that GT cowardly stayed home during World War I, while UGA went to war. No athletic events are scheduled between UGA and GT for the next six years.
Obviously the rivalry got off to a quick start and has had little love lost from the very beginning. This decade, close contests and controversial calls on the field have restored the heat and hate to a rivalry that faltered in the 1970s and 1980s:
1993 – Leading 36-10 and with 89 seconds left in the game, UGA throws a fourth down pass for another TD and a 43-10 drubbing of Tech on their home field. The result? A bench clearing brawl.
1997 – A game saving GT interception, on UGA’s last drive, is erased by a questionable pass interference call. Georgia scores on the very next play to win 27-24.
1998 – An apparent GT fumble on the Jacket’s final drive is ruled as down and the Jackets go on the kick a field goal with 3 seconds on the clock to win 21-19.
1999 – With the score tied at 48, 13 seconds on the clock, and the ball at GT’s 2 yard line, UGA decides to go for the touchdown instead of the sure field goal. Jasper Sanks “fumbles” the ball and Tech recovers to send the game into overtime. The Jackets go on to win 51-48 and the local media creates a circus over the “fumble” which was later shown to have actually been down.
2000 – GT jumps out on UGA early, prompting legendary UGA radio personality Larry Munson to say the Jackets are moving the ball on the Bulldogs like UGA “was Wake Forest of Maryland or Somebody”. Tech goes on to win decisively and Tech fans like myself can be seen walking around in gold shirts that say “Tech Fans for Donnan…And Quincy Carter too!”
2002 – 51-7…
2004 – Reggie Ball throws the ball away on fourth down. UGA fans claim he can’t count. GT fans claim the officials failed up to update the down notifier in the endzone, confusing the Jackets.
2005 – Thomas Flowers benefits from obviously missed clipping calls on two big punt returns to swing field position and give UGA the edge and the win.
2006 – The refs choke on their whistles and fail to blow a play dead as Tony Taylor pulls a fumble out of the pile and runs for a TD in a game that ended 15-12 in UGA’s favor.
2008 – 45-42…Roddy Jones is still running down the sideline!
These historical references have fueled a rivalry that lasts 365 days a year and goes well beyond just football games. GT vs. UGA games sell out in every sport available. The baseball and basketball series are especially heated. Fans of UGA and GT make a hobby of cheering against each other any chance they get. If UGA’s basketball team played against the Russian national team or if their baseball team played against a Cuban national team, I’d still pull against the Dawgs.
A rivalry as old and heated as GT versus UGA obviously goes well beyond just sports venues and finds its way into neighborhoods and offices throughout the state. Growing up in central Georgia as an UGA fan (my dad is an UGA alum) I learned all of the old insults that were used regularly against Tech. Having spent the past 20 years attending and cheering for Tech, I’ve heard most of the insults that are used against UGA…
UGA fans call GT fans geeks, yechies, nerds, bugs, bumble bees, yellow maggots, NATS (North Avenue Trade School, a joke based on GT’s address and location), and just about anything else they can think of to make light of GT’s academic reputation or unique mascot the Yellow Jacket.
GT fans call UGA fans mutts, leg humpers, UGAG, rednecks, boo dawgs, ditch diggers, and just about anything else we can think of to make light of UGA’s lower academic standards and way overused mascot, the bulldog.
UGA fans call Bobby Dodd Stadium the “Joke by Coke”, while making fun of the seating capacity and ancient facilities. They were particularly partial to our “Mystery Liquid” and crowded sight lines before the stadium upgrade.
GT fans prefer using “Sanford and Son Stadium” instead of Sanford Stadium when referring to UGA’s home field and the sewage issues (and odors) that have been known to arise there.
UGA fans make fun of the lack of women on Tech’s campus while claiming that GT recruits its cheerleaders from local women’s colleges.
GT fans discuss the loose morals of UGA co-eds and their tobacco chewing habits while steadfastly defending the intelligence and integrity of the women that do grace Tech’s campus.
UGA fans claim that the local newspapers are partial to Tech athletics.
Tech fans claim that the favorable coverage is obviously directed in the Dawgs’ direction.
UGA fans make fun of the fact that GT doesn’t always sell out every home game, despite evidence otherwise.
GT fans make fun of the fact that UGA’s stands “bleed red” in the third quarter, during losing efforts, despite the fact that the stands may have been full at the beginning of the game.
UGA fans claim that Tech “lies and cheats.”
GT fans point to UGA’s past NCAA scrutiny in response.
UGA fans bash GT for taking so many Northern recruits and having so many out of state alums.
GT fans bash on UGA for being afraid to go on the road to play a real out of conference opponent that isn’t located close to home here in the South.
The insults, jibes, and accusations go on 365 days a year. There is no possible way anyone could catalogue them all. The ones listed above are the obvious ones that take about five minutes to crank out on short notice. The list will surely be longer this time next season. GT and UGA fans will be sure to jump on any news stories that happen to put their rival in a bad light, such as the misguided UGA fan who ran through security at Hartsfield here in Atlanta and caused the airport to be evacuated and shutdown for several hours. The idiot was trying to make his flight to the Ole Miss game…Tech fans will glean a years worth of jokes from that fellow and his mug shot that was published complete with a Georgia t-shirt. We widely wondered why Mark Richt didn’t recruit him to play running back. The guy was obviously pretty fast. Who knows…He might have been the next “Hershel Walker”…
Go Jackets!
THWG!
PS: Told ya the story about the fan running through the airport would never grow old. I’m just doing my part to keep it alive!

It’s great to hate once a year. Finally GT comes with a team us dawgs can truly hate…a winner coach – hate ‘em and a winner tailback – hate ‘em. Hate is good – dawgs win upset giving GT a reason to kill Clemson.
Welcome back to real football ’cause that ACC league is not.

Thank God and Greyhound that chan gomer gailey is not here anymore. That is the reason for so much excitement in Tech football is that gomer is gone.
Any Tech fan that ever supported gomer in any way (especially you FOOLS on the HIVE) should be ashamed of yourselves and apologize to all TECH fans that had to suffer under gomer.

Tech fans are the biggest a** Holes in the world. After calvin johnsons last loss in athens, a tech nerd stopped by me because of the blocked exits ahead proceeded to slap me in the face and run up to the exit. This dreadlocked, white boy about 21 years old hit at 55 year old and ran away. This is typical of tech nerds. They run their mouths and run away. Well, dreadlocked, white boy, I’ll be at grant field tomorrow looking for a little pay back on and off the field.

I reviewed the play frame-by-frame. JoeHam’’s knees hit the ground before he lost the ball. And even if they hadn’t, the UGAG player who first touched the ball’s lower body was out of bounds when he touched it. So either way, it was Tech’s ball.

John Heisman, Head Coach of Georgia Tech, 1904-1919, Won 100 games, lost 28, tied 6. Opening day of practice each season he would describe a football like this, holding the football up in front of the players: He would ask, “What is it?” Before anyone could answer he would say, “A prolate spheriod. That is, an elongated sphere in which the outer leathern casing is drawn tightly over a somewhat smaller rubber tubing.” Then, glaring at the players and speaking in an very serious tone of voice he would add,”Better to have died as a small boy than to fumble it.”
John Heisman’s record against the Puppies: 7 wins, 4 losses, 1 tie.
Oh, and by the way, the final score of that very first meeting between Tech and Georgia in 1893 was GT 28, UGA 6. And the Pups were claiming the refs were the reason the got beat… even way back at the very first game against us! LOL!

Grudge match in The South ?
It’s only a Grudge Match for Georgia Tech, as well it should be with a record against UGA of 37-59-5.
39% winning percentage for Georgia Tech.
Tech is Number 40 in attendance and Number 41 in Strength of Schedule.
UGA finds only 5 other schools with more attendance and UGA SoS is Number 5.
Georgia Tech APR Academic Progress Rate for Football is way worse than UGA APR in Football.
Coach Paul Johnson makes $2.3 million and Coach Richt makes $2.8 million, half a million more than Georgia Tech can come up with to keep Paul Johnson.

John Heisman is best known for the fact at Georgia Tech that he went out and built a football team while the ENTIRE REST OF THIS GREAT NATION actually WENT TO WORLD WAR I and defended this country. UGA, and the rest of the NATION did not even have football teams during World War I, instead the entire team and Coach was in France, fighting. Why you want to talk about him anyway, when Georgia Tech has never been Final AP Poll Number 1 and has NEVER won a Heisman Trophy, is beyond me.
Tech did the same thing during World War II, except one guy Castleberry. And, during World War II, Tech played soldiers stationed at Georgia Tech. Again, UGA football players were at World War II. Before they left, they were National Champions in the same polls that Tech claims 6 National Championships found in the Official NCAA Football Records Book. UGA 6 NC Football Tech 6 NC Football. When they came back from fighting World War II, UGA players again won NC.
As for the 1st meeting, UGA won football games the year before. Tech lost every game. As a matter of fact, Tech has had 7 seasons like your 1st season, with 0 wins. Tech has also had 5 more seasons with but 1 win. And, Tech has had 5 more seasons with just 2 wins. 755 same as Hank Aaron. In the 2nd season, Tech cheating wanted to win. Your 3 best players in that 1st game between us were NONE OF THEM students at Georgia Tech yet again. You paid them to play for Tech. At the end of the game, UGA recognized the players, and threw rocks at the train. Then, the train rear-ended a freight train outside Lawrenceville. Barricaded inside, when Tech got back to Atlanta the AJ-C ran headlines with photo of the wrecked TRAIN saying Rambling Wreck returns to Atlanta. Nowadays, Tech tries to pass that 1893 train wreck with AJ-C caption, as a 1930 automobile. Excuse me, you LIED about 1893, World War I and World War II

Grant field is named for Hugh Inman Grant, son of John W. Grant, a well-known Atlanta merchant and original benefactor of the stadium (from Wikipedia), not the Union General. Get your facts straight. And Tech’s Sagarin SoS is ranked 12; UGa’s is 17. Look it up.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL – North vs. South – We agree on this…….
Go Tech!!
Women’s Accessories
NORTH: Chap Stick in back pocket and a $20 bill in the front pocket.
SOUTH: Louis Vuitton duffel with two lipsticks, water proof mascara, and
a fifth of bourbon. Money not necessary – that’s why we have boyfriends.
Stadium Size:
NORTH: College football stadiums hold 20,000 people.
SOUTH: High school football stadiums hold 20,000 people.
Fathers:
NORTH: Expect their daughters to understand Sylvia Plath.
SOUTH: Expect their daughters to understand pass interference.
Mothers:
NORTH: Don’t care if their daughters know what a football is.
SOUTH: Expect their daughters to buy a new outfit for Homecoming each year and marry a football player.
Campus Decor:
NORTH: Statues of founding fathers.
SOUTH: Statues of Heisman trophy winners.
Homecoming Queen:
NORTH: Also a physics major.
SOUTH: Also Miss America.
Heroes:
NORTH: Rudy Guliani
SOUTH: General Neyland
Getting Tickets:
NORTH: 5 days before the game you walk into the ticket office on campus
and purchase tickets.
SOUTH: 5 months before the game you walk into the ticket office on
campus, put name on waiting list for tickets, then still have to camp out.
Friday Classes After a Thursday Night Game:
NORTH: Students and teachers not sure they’re going to the game, because
they have classes on Friday.
SOUTH: Teachers cancel Friday classes because they don’t want to see the
few hungover students that might actually make it to class.
Parking:
NORTH: An hour before game time, the University opens the campus for
game parking.
SOUTH: RVs sporting their school flags begin arriving on Wednesday for
the weekend festivities. The really faithful arrive on Tuesday.
Week of Big Game:
NORTH: Don’t even know who they are playing on Saturday.
SOUTH: Choose outfit + accessories with school colors in mind, make signs to support the home team, get shakers ready, pray for a victory, and bow down or try to high-five football players when you see them in their pre-game “walk”.
Game Day:
NORTH: A few students party in the dorm and watch ESPN on TV, wondering why “Game Day Live” is never broadcast from their campus.
SOUTH: Every student wakes up, has a beer for breakfast, and rushes over
to where ESPN is broadcasting “Game Day Live” to get on camera, cheer tirelessly, and wave banners.
Tailgating:
NORTH: Raw meat on a grill, beer with lime in it, listening to
local radio station with truck tailgate down.
SOUTH: 30-foot custom pig-shaped smoker fires up at dawn. Cooking
accompanied by live performance by “Hootie and the Blowfish,” who come
over during breaks and ask for a hit off bottle of bourbon. Televisions set up with satellite dishes so you don’t miss any football games shown that day.
Getting to the Stadium:
NORTH: You ask “Where’s the stadium?”
When you find it, you walk right in.
SOUTH: When you’re near it, you’ll hear it. On game day it becomes the
state’s third largest city.
Concessions:
NORTH: Drinks served in a paper cup filled to the top with soda.
SOUTH: Drinks served in a souvenir plastic cup, with the home team’s mascot on
it, filled less than half way with soda, to ensure enough room for
bourbon.
When National Anthem is Played:
NORTH: Stands are less than half full,
and less than half of them stand up.
SOUTH: 100,000 fans, all standing, sing along in perfect four-part
harmony.
The Smell in the Air After the First Score:
NORTH: Nothing changes.
SOUTH: Fireworks, with a touch of bourbon.
Commentary {Male Fan}:
NORTH: “Nice play.”
SOUTH: “Dammit, you slow sumbeyoch -tackle him and break his legs.”
Commentary {Female Fan}:
NORTH: “My, this certainly is a violent sport.”
SOUTH: “Dammit, you slow sumbeyoch – tackle him and break his legs.”
Announcers:
NORTH: Neutral and paid.
SOUTH: Announcer harmonizes with the crowd in the fight song, with a tear in his eye because he is so proud of his team.
After the Game:
NORTH: The stadium is empty way before the game ends.
SOUTH: Another rack of ribs goes on the smoker. While somebody goes to
the nearest package store for more bourbon, planning begins for next
week’s game.
Nothing else in the universe comes even halfway close to the
glories of Southern Football.

Grant Field was named after W. T. Grant of Grant Department Stores, not after U.S. Grant of Civil War and Presidential fame, as asserted in your post accusing Tech fans of being stupid…pretty rich…you demonstrate your stupidity in a post calling others stupid…

Sorry Lou, Tim Tebow has replaced the mighty Hers[sic]hel as the greatest college football player in history. Stop living in the past. Stop living in the past.
This just in…Roddy Jones just slipped past another UGAg air-grabbing defender on his way to the end zone.

points are not given for the size of your stadium or the number of fans that trash your campus every home game. There are no bonus points given for preseason #1 rankings or the number of 4 and 5 star recruits on the team. It’s the way that the football team actually performs on the field that counts. Your team is 6-5 this season. TECH is 10-1. Deal with it!

And yes, it’s funny how so many UGA fans never came within ten miles of a college classroom. I guess that’s why they identify with the barely literate UGA players.

I know it’s popular to bash Gailey, facts are he brought in nfl talent, but made poor in game decisions. Let’s see how Gomer can handle bringing in top tier talent. Haven’t seen a lot of nfl prospects in the under classes.
Bee very carelful today, this is the most talent GT has had since the Ross era.

My guess is that your punter, Butler will break all the UGA punting records tonight. I say he punts about 20 times for a total of 1000 yards. Now, that my UGAG friends is an accomplishment. THWG!

Come on dawg fans………….let’s get motivated. I mean………….we are awesome. We rank 119th in turnovers, 116th in penalties and we have recovered one fumble this year. Also, we definitely have the best QB in the nation with pine sitter Cox. Can’t wait to see us try to stop that highschool triple option like we did last year.

Today’s events are not looking good for us. Clemson, some chump champ, loses to SC. Bet they’ll be pissed in Tampa.
Smack talk about the dawgs could be a little too much salt. Buyer beware…….BCS bowl slipping away. If this happens, maybe someone needs to look in the mirror.
