Comparing Sagarin and SoS on an Off Week

Idle thoughts on an off week…

Various Rankings

Teams in the BCS Top 25 : The SEC has three while the ACC has four.

Teams in the AP Top 25: The SEC has three while the ACC has four.

Teams in the Harris Poll Top 25: The SEC has three while the ACC has four.

Teams in the Sagarin Top 25: The SEC has four while the ACC has five.

Anyone else detecting the trend here?  While the SEC has an admittedly strong showing at #1 and #2 with Florida and Alabama, the ACC in general has more teams ranked top to bottom.   How often have we heard arguments in the past that the ACC was top heavy when FSU was sitting on the top with everyone else beneath them.  Why are we not hearing how top heavy the SEC is right now?

And speaking of Sagarin ratings…which are generally considered non-biased and legit and which are published by USA Today.

Sagarin Stuff (Click here to see source details…)

Lets look at the current Top 10 BCS rated schools and compare their Sagarin rated strength of schedule…

  • Florida – SoS #34
  • Alabama – SoS #22
  • Texas – SoS #50
  • TCU – SoS #48
  • Cincinatti – SoS #65
  • Boise State – SoS #91
  • Georgia Tech – SoS #12
  • LSU – SoS #29
  • Pittsburgh – SoS #57
  • Ohio State – SoS #49

What does this tell us?

It tells me that Georgia Tech and Alabama are the only teams rated in the BCS Top 10 who have played anything approaching a championship schedule.  Tech’s schedule rates an impressive #12 while Bama’s sneaks into the Top 25 at #22.

Of course…Bama plays Chattanooga (rated #163) today and Florida plays FIU (that’s Florida International University if you didn’t know…rated #136!) so we can expect BOTH of their SoS to fall.

Sagarin also does conference rankings…lets check those out…

CONFERENCE CENTRAL MEAN SIMPLE AVERAGE TEAMS
   1 PAC-10 (A) = 79.75 78.73 ( 2) 10
   2 SOUTHEASTERN (A) = 78.99 79.39 ( 1) 12
   3 ATLANTIC COAST (A) = 77.23 76.90 ( 3) 12
   4 BIG EAST (A) = 76.98 76.76 ( 4) 8
   5 BIG 12 (A) = 74.03 74.75 ( 5) 12

Maybe…just maybe…the SEC isn’t the big bully on the block this year?  The PAC-10 has a nice advantage if you consider the conference as a whole rather than a few highly or lowly rated teams.   They have a bigger lead on the SEC than the SEC has on the ACC, which is making up ground from past seasons.

BCS Level Competition?

A poster using the handle “midatlantech” makes an interesting post over on Stingtalk…

If you look at the Top 10 BCS rated schools and their schedules, its very interesting to see how many of them will play BCS level competition and whether the games are at home or away…

Florida – 9 Total (4 away)
Alabama – 9 Total (4 away, 1 neutral)
Texas -8 Total (4 away)
TCU – 2 Total (2 away)
Cinn – 9 Total (5 away)
Boise – 1 Total (0 away)
GT – 11 Total (6 away)
LSU – 9 Total (5 away)
PITT – 9 Total (4 away)
Ohio St – 9 Total (4 away)

So…what jumps out at you reading that list?

The Jackets will play the most BCS conference competition (regular season) and a majority of those games will have been on the road.

The Jackets will end up playing 11 of their 12 games against BCS conference teams…three from the vaunted SEC before its all said and done.

The other thing that should jump out at you is the fact that Boise and TCU will have only played three BCS conference teams combined!  Boise beat Oregon at home, which was a little impressive.  And I give TCU credit for beating UVA and Clemson in addition to fairly decently respected BYU and Utah teams.  But still…if you want to earn a spot in the BCS title games…play more BCS conference opponents!  Boise has no excuse!  Look at the #91 rated strength of schedule!

Ah well…like I said…just idle thoughts during an idle week…

I just hope this does not go to Techs head. Next thing you know there is Tech clothes being sold in Kroger and Walmart like another school. One would think half of the mexican lawn care workers were UGA alum.

Your math at least for Tech is wrong. They’ve only played 11 games. One was against Jax St. They couldn’t possibly have played 11 FCS schools because one of those was an FBS. You are right that they will end up playing 12 of 13 FBS schools, but since they still have Clemson and uog left, that would make 10 as well.

The sec is that all hype conference.

The ACC beat the sec 6 out 10 regular season games last year and will most likely win 4 out of 7 this year.

The sec talks the talk but they cannot walk the walk. That is why they are for the BSbcs, Because if we had a true 16 team playoff…the sec hype would be exposed for all to see.

Thanks to God and Greyhound, chan gomer gailey is gone forever. Any Tech fan that ever supported or defended gomer in any way sucks as bad as he does. We could have had Paul Johnson in 2002…think about it.

That’s because ESPN has a mega contract with the SEC. Of course it’s in their best interest to promote the SEC. ESPN’s coverage and commentary is no longer unbiased.

Sagarin? LMAO! Talk about the ACC’s record in BCS bowls. Pitiful! The ACC hasn’t had a serious NC contender since 1999. GT lost to a 5 loss SEC team last year by 35 pts. Chris, Sagarin doesn’t mean squat. Come back after all the bowls have been played and then talk about the mighty ACC.

Great Information!

Maybe, just maybe the ACC can finish strong (including bowl games) and we can start to chip away at the obvious media bias against the conference. The SEC, Big 12 & Big 10 are OVER-RATED! As long as the BCS stays like it is, they will continue playing crap teams because if the teams in these conferences played decent competition on a regular basis, they would be exposed.

I still say the BCS needs to be changed so that ANY & ALL teams which finished the season outside of the Top 100 do not count towards the computer or personal polls for BCS standings! If teams want to play 10 chumps and only 1 or 2 decent teams………….they have not earned the right to be considered for a BCS slot.

If Florida, Alabama, Texas, etc. schedule 3-4 pitiful teams to give them an easy run, they should not BENEFIT from the cowardly approach; they should suffer for being too scared to play decent competition. Almost every team plays one easy game, so it would be even unless teams schedule multiple soft teams. A team that schedules 12 games against Top 100 teams should benefit if they win all or most of the games!

The SEC must be tough. UGA VII’s heart couldn’t last 2 seasons of play. Well, maybe being ranked pre-season #1 last year, just having this season be so bad, and the thought of Willie coming back just killed UGA VII.

MC,

You are right… LSU beat GT by a score of 38-3 last year… but if you watched the game you will know that LSU was not a dominate team…. the fact that every one one of Les Miles gambles paid off and turnovers that went the way of the tigers were the story in that game.

This is evidenced by the fact that GT had more yards than LSU with just seconds to go in the game.

I am sure GT would love to play LSU again …. you can bet your arse that CPJ won’t consider going to the bowl game a reward and just let them have fun in the days leading up to a bowl game….

UF should be ashamed of their schedule….

Considering the ACC’s 1-9 record in BCS bowl games over the past decade — the worst record of the six BCS conferences — expansion didn’t exactly turn the league into the superpower many expected. Instead, the nine other teams have sandwiched their new members into a 12-layer Dagwood of mediocrity.

Says it all.

TO MC: I think you will find that the players and often times coaches Of teams in all conferences change year to year. There are new coaches at Ga. Tech, North Carolina, Clemson, Miami, Duke, in the ACC. The conferences don’t remain stagnant. Miami and Florida State were once yearly contenders for the National Championship,
Florida was just a good program until Urban Meyer arrived, Alabama was an average team until Saban came to town, Saban also brought LSU back to a National contending level.
The point being just because the SEC, or PAC 10(USC) or Big 10 (Ohio State) get on a roll, doesn’t mean it’s going to stay the same.
Unless you are a biased SEC homer, You should be able to tell that other than Florida and Alabama, the SEC is not that good THIS season. Maybe next year, it wil be better, but it could also be worse. NOTHING STAYS THE SAME FOR EVER!

The ACC is a very competitive conference from top to bottom, and not top heavy like the SEC with 2 good teams and a bunch of average ones. Georgia Tech has not only played a tough schedule, they have done it without any rest and needed this bye week to rest up for the championship portion of their schedule starting with UGA next Saturday. Looking for lots of success from Paul Johnson during his coaching period on the Flats.

i posted at least some of the info in another ajc blog a week ago.

in comparing the sec vs the acc you didnt go far enough. it is a good comparison to look at the top 30. when you look at the sos of the sec to the acc it is very telling to compare all the teams.

i dont remember now how it went exactly but i do remember that the sos for the acc’s top 6 teams for the most part are better than all of the sec’s powerhouses but for ugag. if i remember right gt,um,uc,vt,nc all had tougher sos than lsu uf and bama. of course that was a week ago so it may have changed abit.

if you want a topic for more discussion how about that the ACC coastal is argueably the toughest division in all of college fb.

5 of 6 teams will have winning records. there is a potention for 4 teams with 10 wins or more. all 4 teams have sos in the top 20. add in a uc team from the pacific that may win 10 and we are a conf with potentially a 13 win team an 4 10 win teams.

next week is a very important week as far as the acc goes. fsu vs uf, uga vs gt, uc vs usc… there is NO reason why the acc couldnt win all of those games. fsu seems to be using all this controversy to their advantage by coming together as a team. uf is going to have trouble with ACC speed ;o).

dis n dat

-when ugag fans harp on our attendance just remember…. its the quality of the fan not the quantity that we care about.

look no further than the most recent article that painted the uga fan base as drunken rednecked white trash for the most part. peeing off the top of the stadium, hundreds of people arrested at each game for unacceptable behavior while drunk, leaving tons of trash strewn all over the area are just some of the issues these fans exhibit.

while i am sure we have our issues the numbers pale in comparison to ugag.

-the div 2 teams that beat acc teams are doing pretty well for themselve i do believe. jax state and william n mary for instance are not tooo shabby i think. anybody know how those teams are doing?

-when i was compariing the sos last week bewteen the sec vs the acc, it was tied for all practical purposes which means that generally speakin….

the bottom teams in the sec played a tougher sos than did the top teams. imagine that.

tech fan here…with an opinion, naturally…

flordia and bama might be the 2 best teams in the country, with texas thrown in ther for good measure…the next tier of really good teams would include lsu, g-tech, TCU and several others w/ 1, 2 or even 3 losses.

top to bottom, if you played it off, i would expect the SEC and ACC to go either 5-7 or 6-6 against each other…i’d concede that the SEC has 2 teams clearly better than the best of the ACC…but I’d also say that Vandy is WORSE than the worst of the ACC.

Anyway…See you on Te Flats in a week, Doggies. Good luck against the Wildcats tonite. Hope you avoid any more injuries. Sorry about your dog.

While I am a general football fan, it’s funny that everyone is talking about how “top-heavy” the SEC is when is seems the ACC is pretty similar in that regard. Duke, Virginia, North carolina, Maryland, and North Carolina State. Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt What do all these have in common? They’re all pretty lowly on a season to season basis. But, play anyone of these SEC teams against the ACC teams mentioned and I’m pretty sure the SEC would win every time. How about putting an “Average” SEC team against the best ACC team? Well, there is a pretty good chance it’s always going to be a close game… Example, would be UGA -Tech next weekend.
Not to mention the fact that the BCS top 20 seems to be going through a rut this year. Does anyone expect Boise State, Cincinnati, Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh, TCU, and Standford to be in top 20 next year? The majority of major college football teams look weak this year. Will GT be back in the top 20 next year?

MC

November 21st, 2009
2:53 pm

And UGA had more yards than GT last year Steve Spurrier. So what’s your point? Obviously GT wasn’t good enough to stop those Les Miles gambles. Anyway you look at it GT got beat down. GT didn’t even belong on the same field as LSU Or was GT just do damn bad that they gave 35 points away without LSU doing anything for them. LMAO! Explain how your vaunted O scored just 3 points.

MC

And still the ACC stinks up the postseason year after year. Win a BCS bowl every now and then how about it. Explain why the ACC becomes a whipping post for the rest of the college football universe every single post season. Sagarin? ROFL!!! Too bad his computers can’t play the games for the “mighty” ACC.

fsu vs uf

November 21st, 2009
3:01 pm

yes i do.

-ALL the intangibles favor fsu. bobby/mickey retirement factors, bowl streak, losing ponder etc. imo the team has come togehter.
-fsu is a very streaky team. they seem to play their best away from home. byu for instance.
-there is no question that fsu has the athletes to compete with anybody. witness their top 10 ranking at the begining of the season.
-they are on a role.
-havent missed a beat since ponder went out. the replacement is doing great inspite of the intense pressure to win out.
-there will be a ton of fsu fans at the swamp
-the refs will be from the ACC ;o). home cooking favors the noles.

-uf is having issues with its O
-uf could lose this game and still play for the nc if they beat bama.
-fsu is noted for roughing up qb’s. look for them to rough up tebo.

bottom line is i expect it to be a very close game.

also sorry but i dont buy into uf and bama automatically being the best two teams. look at what happened to bama last year.

you are a victim of the espn/abc hype. my guess is that 60% of espn sportcenter is DEDICATED to the sec. its like a damned commercial for the sec for hours a day. over and over again. now they are hypeing the sec loser to play in a bcs bowl as automatic. say what?

imo the ESPN is to SEC as FOXNEWS is to the REPUBLICAN PARTY.

espn has a billion dollar contract with the sec. espn has a dog in this fight. big time.

i think the jackets could play with bama or uf. our win against vt was more impressive than bama’s imo. when bama beat vt it was at the beggining of the year when the teams had no identity. when gt beat vt going away…. any sports caster you listened to said that no 4 VT was playing as well as any team in the country. we beat them when they were peaking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hey mc

dont look now but the acc is gaining ground …. fast

we won the head to head vs the sec last year and look to do it AGAIN this year.

please dont give me that crap about the matchups.

that same arguement could be used for the candy assed sec bowl matchups as well. for instance…. osu having to play lsu in their home territory for the nc.

how about gt having to play a dline stout lsu team last year. when we played lsu it was the first time all year they were healthy. they had a huge ad on paper wrt thier dline vs are oline. that was common knowledge.

gt had a makeshift o line all year long. injuries galore. so bad we had tight ends playing on the o line. lost a starter etc. our online was in bad shape even at bowltime.that was common knowledge.

it was a match made in heaven for the sec and LSU. i find it funny that another matchup that favored the sec team blew up in your faces.

i guess utah didnt buy into the espn/sec hype any more than i do…..

when you have an advertising entity like espn in your corner jockeying for the best possible postion how could you not win a good % of your bowls?

give me a break dude……

when you look at the bowl matchups it is clear that the movers and shakers (espn etc) put sec teams in positions to win.

Just like a Mutt fan, MC.

Ignore the preponderence of statistics cited in the blog, pluck one or two of your own to hang onto, and denounce all the other facts with one or two isolated facts.

Did LSU beat GT last year? Yup. Did Utah plaster Alabama last year? Yup. I guess the SEC sucks, huh? I guess based on your logic the MWC is champion, huh?

The bowls are *exhibition* games…..lots of teams go into bowl games with little or nothing to prove…unlike regular season games which determine bowl destinations. Did Bama’s loss “prove” anything about the weakness of the SEC compared to the MWC? No more and no less than the GT loss proved about GT or the SEC.

And the discussion is about THIS YEAR, Dawg, not the last 10 years. Get a life !!! Or at least, learn how to read, think, and discuss in a reasonable manner !!

Our friend, “m”, has been an equal opportunity Gailey hater and if the AJC wants to continue my subscriptions and traffic on the website, threats to ban a blogger simply b/c they could not stand Chan Gailey cannot be tolerated. Who are you Chris Boggs to make such a decision when the best reporting you do is on a blog. Dwyer will break off his usual 40 to 80 yd TD, and there is no DB for UGA that can cover No. 8. Just when you think you can stop these guys, the next wave of “Roddy, let me break 5 tackles for a 60 yd TD just like I did last year on that UGAzz” will get his carries and then UGA will start thinking about 2010. And we have Anthony Allen who can take the ball to the house and is a mack truck. 10-1 baby….and trust me when I tell you that NO TECH BALLER IS TAKING THIS NEXT GAME LIGHTLY…We oldschoolers are making sure of that….

Chris, I totally support you maintaining some class and decorum on YOUR blog. This is not a freedom of speech issue, since ‘m’ is quite free to continue his rants in several other locations. Over the last several years I have almost entirely stopped reading the reader comments sections because they so often devolve into name calling and worse.

Back to the article/blog …….. I see where one of the bloggers & myself see the BCS, and the massive contract between ESPN, CBS, SEC TV, etc and the SEC as the fraud it is. I see this contract possibly doing the same thing to college football, as a whole, as the NBC et al TV contract with Notre Dame. NBC and other TV has shoved ND football down the public’s throat to the point ND has become an alsoran, laughing stock team. I’d guess 7 out of 10 people consider ND a joke. And now you’ve got the “suits” telling US who we’re going to watch. Who we’re going to anoit as the best team/conference. Who’s going to play for the NC, etc, etc. So you better be damn sure they are going to keep SEC teams at or near the top so as to assure their “nest egg/SEC” has someone playing for the NC. Took LSU THREE!! losses to get them knocked out of the top 10! The BCS is going nowhere but down……. a playoff is the only answer, but $$$ is the king, and as long as we viewers are forced into thier system we’re just going to have to sit back and take it. TCU is the team that gets the big screw-job this season …. who will it be next year???

mash a bug: no mashing last year, or this year, or next year. Somebody show CUZ the strength-of-schedule rating. See if he can tell the difference between Tech’s schedule and the Little Sisters that the bulldoggies get whipped by.

I agree with your thoughts on the Chan Gailey comments, Chris, although your response might be a little strong. It makes me sick to see the same old comment over and over again – it was time for Gailey to go but I think he was a decent man despite his coaching flaws and I don’t see the point in continuted personal attacks. He’s gone, CPJ is here and I’d rather focus on the job that he and the Jackets are doing.

Can you please block ‘m’ from every blog, not just yours? That would be sweet. Love the blog, keep up the good work!

Right, Old Schooler! m is correct. Gailey would send Tech to the Blue Turf bowl in a heartbeat. He did not care if he ever beat ga. That’s what got him canned. Not soon enough I might add. But he was much better than Curry or Lewis.

Once again, a pretty clear argument against the current BCS system. Also, I support banning ‘m’ from the blogs if he continues to copy/paste comments about Gailey. We get it. We got it a year ago when you were posting the same thing. Let it go.

Chris Boggs you telling the truth! I chose my name “SECFACTCHECK.COM” to bring attention to this very fact.

I will give you my theory-answer to your question…”Why are we not hearing how top heavy the SEC is right now?”

It is all about the allmighty dollar and not results on the field. The ESPN, CBS(s) have deals with the SEC. Watch the polls early in the year as it relates to upcoming games… BIG correlation… #3 so and so facing #12 so and so…! Additionally, what bowl wants small schools coming to their bowl? They want as many fans as possible…. The SEC fans are drunk on their own Kool-Aide. If all the alumni from Wake Forest had attended the Orange Bowl, they still would not have sold out. Despite having a great team, the media world and promoters were scared to death of them succeeding… What a great story, a 4,000 student University competing against 40,000 student state supported schools with TV contracts, coaching endorsements, etc.

So, you will always hear the ACC and other smaller less $$$$ schools getting slammed and the schools in the SEC and the USCs, ND, Ohio State have at least a one or two game mulligans because of how they travel and how many T-Shirts they buy. That my friend is THE reason there is not a play-off system in D1. Think of the massive stadiums, coach’s salaries, facilities at risk if smaller schools had a clean shot at winning the national title.

I give UF its credit, and Bama, too, for that matter. But to wit, Bama beat VaTech by 11, after trailing in the 4th quarter. I believe Bama was/is the best team. But, Tech and UNC both beat VaTech (UNC beat them at Tech and appeared to have the better team regardless of the score). So, is Bama better than Tech, or UNC for that matter. I contend that Bama is not better than Tech, and maybe the same for UNC vis-a-vis UNC and Clemson. In summary, the SEC might have only one team better that the ACC teams mentioned here. And that is only a maybe, since I believe Tech could hang w/UF. Just my opinion.

The way Josh is playing he could be running the Titans’ option offense. But the NFL will have to wait until 2011 to get him.

Chris,

Thank you for telling “m” to basically STFU. I’m so tired of hearing this guy. I’m a current Tech student and was around for 2 years of Gailey and trust me, I couldn’t have been happier the day he got fired. However, there is no need to dwell on the past and that’s what this guy is doing. Seriously, he sounds like a broken record UGA fan talking about Herschel and the “glory” days of Jawga football when they won a NC in 1980. Come on dude…it’s 2009 and the year of the Diesel…not the dog.

And on another note, great article! I really enjoyed seeing everything laid out in plain fashion so that when I show it to my friends at UGA, I can honestly (and with facts) tell them to shove it.

Can’t wait for the game this weekend! Nothing better than a Saturday night game at Bobby Dodd under the lights with CPJ at the wheel! Unless of course you add in a GT win!

I am not sure why everyone waste so much energy arguing these points. I would love to say that the ACC has the stronger football conference. However, the ACC is still behind the SEC year over year when it comes to football. Compare average attendance, donations, media attention, pick a non subjective measure and the SEC will come out on top…most of the time. Who cares!! The ACC is starting to turn the corner when it comes strength of conference…I think that anyone with a rational thought would have to agree. The ACC needs their marquis football schools to return to prominence (FSU, Miami) and have continued growth by the other prominent football schools (GT, Clemson, Va Tech, Boston College). You will not have to argue about conference strength. We will compete favorably with any conference. Still have ways to go though…

That this video is for the Youtube Trash talk circle, its all in fun and trash talk. It will take a complete game by UGA to beat GT this year, yall have a great team this year and we dawgs know it. This will still be a good game either way and I am still glad to be a Dawg win or lose.

Tech nerds – for all of you who still think that UGA’s schedule is weaker than Tech’s:

UGA’s Sagarin SoS through week 10: #3
Tech’s: #12

This does not justify UGA’s pathetic season, but become educated on football, considering that is what you are commenting on. Not to mention, Tech has not played a team with a winning record since mid-Oct. That does not sound like a tough schedule to me. The Gayturs and bama do play St. Mary’s School for Blind and Criplled Women every other week. I agree that they would not be undefeated if they at least put some middle-school boys teams in there every now and then.

Jd, just wondering how many wins does UGA have aganst that #3 schedule? How many wins do the Jackets have against the #12 schedule? Also our SOS is hurt by playing UGA, whereas your SOS is greatly helped by playing the Jackets.

harpin on gailey....

November 24th, 2009

we have a coach who takes gailey players and puts together two great seasons. one of said seasons could be legendary. same players.

same players that the previous couch could only manage mediocre results with. not one year. not two years.7 years of mediocrity. AND no wins against ga. talk about laughing stock.

this is the same coach that proved our previous lame ad’s opinion that we are a mediocre program. a program that at BEST would achieve mostly 7 win seasons and an occasional 9 win season. da braine ran our entire athletic program like that. as if it twere mediocre AT BEST!

chan is not only a symbol for medicrity but he was ok with it. i would say that the harping on chan goober gailey is well deserved! nice guy yes. goober of a coach? most definitely.

but for drad, chan gailey would have kept his good ol boy coaching buddies as assisants for the entire 7 years. ya think we would have recruited as well as we have the last few years had chan kept his buddy as an assistant? giff smith and staff was a result of pressure drad placed on chan to make changes. the only changes he made were as a direct results of pressure from drad. period.

i would say that many folks (non fans of chan) have 7 years of built up frustration to vent imo. starting with that 50 point loss to ga.

bill lewis is still mentioned with desdain after 15+ years why not chan after 2?
afterall chan was exactly like bill lewis. both nice guys. both terrible fb coaches in their own right.

both killed the program. bill did it with quick strokes in a few short years. chan on the other hand killed our program with slow small quick invisible strokes over 7 years of mediocrity.

many still curse the name of bill lewis under their breath. he is constantly mentioned as a low point in our history. why does chan mr nice guy gailey get a pass?

i certainly havent forgotten what chan ‘accomplished’ at gt. its just the pj has taken much of the pain away.

funny thing is …. i could almost paste and copy most of my post and replace chan gailey’s name with PAUL HEWITT but that is left for a different blog.

Dang man…

What happened?

I thought we were superior?

Surely two of the lowest ranked teams in the weakest division of the SEC didn’t just beat our two division champs, did they?

Tell me it’s all just a bad dream …

Hold your head up conference. I know it was a tough weekend but we all live in denial anyway so I still think we are better than the SEC. Heck, we live in denial about the higher academic standards at Tech too. Those high academic standards didn’t seem to keep Reggie Ball and Joe Hamilton out of school.
