Paul Johnson Plays to Win!

Oh my…oh my…what a gutsy call.

You hear people talk about “coaching not to lose” all the time.

Tonight you saw Paul Johnson “coach to win”.

There was no chance the Jackets were going to kick a fieldgoal and give Riley Skinner another chance to put the ball in the endzone.

The defense had played great all night and the offense had overcome errors and penalties to put itself in a position to win the game.

I don’t think Johnson would have kicked a field goal even if he’d had to go for it in fourth down again, inside the five.  By that time, it was obvious that the Jackets were going to win or lose the game with the ball in their hands…controlling their own destiny.

This was one of those games that teams have to win in order to have a “special season”.

Gutsy, gutsy win…now I’m off to pull for the Seminoles to hold on and beat the Tigers.

I look forward to hearing comments from other Tech fans who were at the game tonight…what did you think about that call to go for it.

I liked the decision but it was due more to the lack of confidence in the defense rather than confidence in the offense.

Didn’t get to go My niece’s highcschool band is also directed by Tech’s band director and they played at half time. My sister went with Dad to see the game. After the game I called Mom and told her that even though we won Sis is not allowed you use my Ticket anymore. Mom Dad and I went to Nashville last weekend and Mom got scared since she was at the game and Tech was tied at the half. Mom thought Dad and I wouldn’t let her go to game anymore either. Well, damn Clemson just took the lead. Come on FSU. Great game.

The best part of the evening was actually after the game when the police escorted van that was carrying the referees stopped in front of me. I could see the zebra stripes through the tinted glass. I shouted and gave them hell. It was funny because nobody around me knew the refs were in the van and they thought I had gone crazy. Not my best moment but I’m sure the refs got a laugh out of it.

BALLS O’ STEEL!!! This man – CPJ – indeed is the greatest Tech coach since Bobby Dodd. I was ready to throw everything I could get my hands on onto to the field to make him kick for 3. He showed me why I’m not a coach – but an artist ;) – and why he’s the best there is. DRad – mortgage Grant Field to keep this man at The Flats PLEASE!!!!

One more to go before punching the tickets to Tampa. Dook – your judgment day is coming next Saturday. GO JACKETS!!!

StinGTees’ biggest “endorsement” was received this week…FROM THE BIGGEST JACKET OF THEM ALL! Search S C Q Art & Apparel on Facebook and check the Photos to see his note! The note is also posted under “News > Articles” at http://www.stinGTees.com!

Great win…CPJ gets the all credit. Had they lost, he’d a gotten the blame. Why make Nesbitt pass so much? The running game was rolling most of the night. Great as he is running the ball, Josh looks lost back there in the pocket…if he doesn’t immediately throw to his primary receiver, like he did on that 4th down.

Not to look ahead, but beating Clemson a second time will be tough.

Great to see Dwyer now dominate the last few games as he did last year. Can’t wait to see him torch UGA again.

CPJ is without a doubt the best coach in the country I keep looking around and there is nobody that can call plays or motivate his players better than CPJ can

and the scary thing is… all of these guys on offense are back next year now thats exciting
(assuming dwyer doesn’t go pro)

GO TECH BEAT DUKE, BEAT UGA, THEN BEAT CLEMSON AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
we should move up to at least number 7 in the BCS this week as well

GT has a small shot at the national title game and the chance of that happening got a little better today with three teams ahead of them losing. So why on earth are all of our fans hoping we dont play Clemson??? IF Clemson can win out they would likely be ranked between 17-23. That would make GT’s schedule TOUGHER and make GT look better if we win and I think we will. GT played Clemson early and thats the best time to play the TO. Have some faith in our team and cheer for the best team on the other side of the ACC so the Jackets will look even better. If GT makes it to #3 or 4 they might be able to jump someone like Boise or TCU if they beat the Tigers in Tampa. First thing is first though. Beat Dook AND CRUSH THE PUPS

I am thankful that Tech stopped trying to pass so often and that Wake Forest did so as well. You have to wonder why Grobe primarily went to the running attack as the game grew late. This allowed us to get them in some third and long situations and Morgan did his thing. Game ball goes to WF OC.

Ya know I checked the other papers this early AM and only 2 had a decent storyline. Both were abbreviated AP wires.

Not many people follow Georgia Tech – never have after we moved to the ACC – and not much before we moved either if my gray matter serves correctly. What a shame.

Right here in Atlanta we have a new “legend” NCAA coach of the year and a never say die team. Tech won early – the officials kept the game close – musta’ had wagers on the spread – pathetic phantom flags kept Wake in the game.

Balls out at the end GT – no guts no glory – what a statement – what a game.

You earned it & deserve it!!! Let us just see how the home town paper (AJC) covers it! It is a shame that our paper does not support an Atlanta team like GT, but it is alright; we know who is the best in the state & it ain’t Georgia!!! Go Jackets….ramble on!!!

War Jacket – Wake switched to more running because of the defensive adjustments Tech made in the 2nd half, it went to a man to man with some zone mixed in. This caused Riley to hold on to the ball a bit longer and our defense to get to him.The D played a terrible first half but redeemed itself in the second half and OT.Great game, now I need some time to grow back some nails.

Obviously GT has a very good ACC team. They have proven capable of beating ACC teams that practically everybody else has beaten. They beat SEC bottom feeders. In 2 years their marque victory is a 3 point win over a UGA team that rolled up over 500 yards and 42 points on them. They were humiliated by LSU. Against SEC teams not named MSU and Vandy GT has given up 80 points in 2 games. One can praise PJ’s offense all day long but it the Tech defense that will be their downfall. Tech cannot beat Alabama because of defense. They cannot beat Florida because of defense. It’s doubtful they can beat Cincinnatti because of defense. If the sun shines brightly on GT the rest of this year and they make it to a BCS bowl against a team like those above, they get trounced. Because of defense. Theirs or the opponents. When GT beats a team of that stature on a big stage, I will reserve the term great until that day. Until then they are just a very good team in a very bad conference.

Chris are you hanging out with Rueben Houston? Vandy scored 3 points on UF and when it comes down to it it is defense that will be GT’s downfall against the UFs of the world. Tebow would out “Nesbitt” you and UF’s defense can handle your O. Bama would control the ball on your D with Mark Ingram and that defensive front of theirs would blow your O line up every play.

Duke I would prefer not to have to play the same team 2 times in a season. Have you not seen the stats on those games? ACC Bball has a Home and away game then the ACC Turny. It is hard to beat a team 2 of 3 times. Don’t tell me a Dukie you don’t know that. Football is even harder than Bball and I know you know that. I think it was UF that split the season with Bama to get a MNC when in the end both teams had the same record. So 1 games means more than the other? I think that is why baseball plays double elimination. I thought you were smart? With no playoff NCAA footbal is a BEAUTY Contest all year.

Pi$$onaDawg you can blow smoke all day long. You don’t want to play Clemson because Tech barely got out alive the first time and without a little help from the officials on that phantom holding call Clemson beats you the 1st time and Tech is out of this conversation. It’s understandable that you would want to play a whipping post from that other division. Bottom line. If you are so concerned about beating the only team in that division that can give you a game, maybe you shouldn’t be talking so loud about wanting to take on one of the big boys at the top of the rankings. Clemson has lost 3 games for Christ’s sake. Why the fear of Clemson?

Hey, I am a Tech man all the way and do not want to “go negative” here after such an important win, BUT…. The Tech defense really sucks. On big downs they just dont seem to have a chance. Look at the Clemson comeback when we had them buried. Look at FSU, Miami, Vandy and Wake moving the ball at will. A lot of Tech people are assuming that we will beat this very poor UGA team with ease, but I do not make that assumption at all. PJ is an outstanding coach who has done an incredible job. but the defense is no good, that is for sure.

I have one big criticism of play calling: Late in the game we have the ball and the game is tied. We get 5 yards on first down. The next play they pitchout to Jones on the left side and we lose 4 yards. This kills the drive. They should have called 2 straight ahead plays that had no risk of significant loss of yardage. We have to remember that we don’t have the offense for 3rd and 9. Two plays straight ahead would have likely earned a first down and we could have run out the clock and kicked the FG that would have won in regulation without ever letting them touch the ball again. Even if we had not make the first down, we would have run more clock and had a good shot at a FG. I could not believe what a bad tactical mistake that was to make that call. Hey, I am thrilled to win it, but we almost threw it away. Our defense has a LONG way to go.

Dookie – I don’t think it’s so much a fear of an opponent as it is a fear of the odds. Yes, the game was close. There were missed calls both ways, especially late. Hang your hat on one call if you want, show your ignorance. No skin off my nose, GT won. As for Vandy, look at point differential. You cannot argue that from both sides of the fence. GT’s MOV was 25 and UF’s was 24. Heck, GT’s second half results were better than UF’s entire game. What does that mean? Nothing, each team won in it’s own way. Look at the games against MSU, similar. Just face it, you come on here with absolutely nothing substantive to add, just trying to be as one-sided negative as you can. Well, that’s nice, run along and play somewhere else now.

On the fence, same logic for you, until GT goes out and plays the Bigger guys (as you define them) they can neither be assumed to have either lost to them or beaten them. What proof do you have that GT could not beat the bigger out of conference schools? I think you have about as much as we have to say that we would. Makes you no better than any of our fans that say they would. Actually, you have to wonder about what type of person it takes to come on a team blog to belittle that team with respect to no other specific team. It’s one thing for a fan of that team to root for it against other, higher-ranked teams. It’s quite another to belittle a specific team with respect to a broader group of teams when you, most probably, have no affiliation with any of them.

All GT can do is play the next game. Focus turns to Duke. Each win makes the next game that much bigger.

We definitely need work on the defensive side of the ball as well as limiting those penalties on offense. Part of the problem with defense is its’ lack of depth and the recent injuries, especially in the secondary. It also amazes me how different the defense appears to play in the second half of games, just makes you wonder.

Duke will be a big challenge. Their offensive strength is our defensive weakness. We need to make it past Duke to get to our bye week so that we can rest and heal up before the UGA game. Focus on Duke, period.

VegasGT it’s fear of Clemson pure and simple. Keep spouting your ignorance. GT fans are terrified of any team that can move the ball and play just a little defense. And Clemson fits the profile. Not only can they move the ball on offense but they can end a game quickly with their return game. You GT fans want to back into a major BCS bowl. If GT is all that you should be begging to play Clemson. Begging to prove the naysayers wrong. Man up. But you VegasGT would rather cry and whine about odds than man up. You puzzy!

I am a TECH fan who was at the game. Our first defensive series was excellent, 3 and out. Our defense does need to improve but we were playing against one heck of a quarterback. Skinner has a 146.56 qb rating, 2500 passing yards and 20 tds.
The weather was perfect for southern football. It was a very exciting game. It’s great to see a team that plays hard and plays to win.

As far college football goes this year, there are no Floirdas. I only see one Florida and one Alabama and one Texas. In 2007, Louisiana-Monroe beat Alabama by seven points. It was Saban’s first season. In 2008, LSU, defending national champions, beat GT 38-3. It was Johnson’s first season. Keep staring at that game, if you like.
GT is improving every week. GT is focused on Duke this week.

The person criticizing the play calling should review the entire season. We’ve converted several third and longs with pitches this season.
Beat Duke!

Like GT fans keep staring at a UGA game they won by 3 points, GT9? What would GT’s record be playing an SEC regular season schedule with that defense. 4-4 maybe? When GT plays in and wins a major BCS bowl against a highly ranked team from a major conference then all doubts will be gone. Until then the beatdown by a 5 loss SEC team in the Chik fil A Bowl is what you’re judged by whether you GT fans like it or not. Beat Clemson, beat a top 5 team in a BCS bowl, then talk. Until then you’re a good team in a very very bad conference.
