Jackets and Gators: Four Common Opponents?

Why Isn’t Nesbitt Getting Heisman Mentions?

Tebow’s been responsible for 18 TDs (10 passing and 8 running) and a little over 1800 yards of offense.  Seven of those scores came against Charleston Southern and Troy…so don’t get too excited.

Nesbitt has been responsible for 19 TDs (6 passing and 13 rushing) and a little over 1900 yards of offense.  Only two of those scores came against cupcake competition opening the season against Jacksonville State.

So Nesbitt has been responsible for more scores and more yards at this point in the season…against fairly comparable competition.  And by the end of the season Nesbitt will have played potentially better overall competition since the Gators still have Florida International on their schedule.

By the end of the season, the Jackets and Gators will share four opponents…FSU, MSU, Vandy, and UGA.  That’ll give us a chance to make direct comparisons.

As of right now, Nesbitt’s performance against MSU looks alot better than Tebow’s.

Tebow threw for 127 but had two INTs returned for scores.  He ran for 88 and a TD as well.

Nesbitt only threw for a paltry 266 (1 TD and no INTs) while running for a respectable 53 yards.

Can the Yellow Jackets continue to win in spite of their recent success?

While this may sound like a silly question to some, I think many GT fans will understand exactly where I am coming from.  We’ve had small (and large) periods of success more than once in the past decade which were followed by crushing defeat and wrenching heartbreak.  Its gotten to the point where Tech fans almost expect to be let down…sometimes we feel like its just a matter of time before the proverbial “other shoe” drops out of the sky to crush our dreams.

More than once this past week I’ve caught myself dwelling on how bad it would feel to lose to Wake Forest this coming weekend.  Its almost like I’m preparing for the inevitable let down.

Its during those times that I have to remind myself that there is something different about Tech this season…Paul Johnson.

Chris,

I get those feelings too, and always have to convince myself to be positive and confident in CPJ & the team. I think it may take a few seasons of no ‘losing the ones you should win’ games to pull Jacket fans out of our recent-history-paranoia.

Tomorrow afternoon’s game against Wake is just one step closer to some well-deserved confidence.

I know exactly what you’re talking about. this may sound bad, but over the years as a Tech fan, I’ve learned to be excited with any win because I know that in every season since 1999 (and beyond?) we’ve lost at least one heartbreaker to someone we should’ve beaten, and it usually costs us a better bowl game.

I realize that CPJ doesn’t walk on water and he, probably, can’t cure leprocy….HOWEVER, he has cured me of the horrors of the Tech let down game! After the bowl game against lsu, I was deflated. We didn’t look like we were prepared and I remembered CPJ referring to bowl games as a ‘vacation’ of sorts. Since the beginning of this season, with the exception of the miami game, I’ve been impressed with his passion for winning! We’re 8-1 and he continues to point out to our players that ‘we haven’t accomplished anything, yet’! He’s addicted to wins and as a Tech fan… I fear no opponent!!! GO TECH!!!

I had that sinking feeling when we fumbled on the 2 at Vandy. I had flashbacks of Virginia last year. Then 10 or so plays later we are up by 14.

Another common team is UGa, Florida beat them 41-17 and Tech will crush these dawgs 56-17. When that comes to pass the press will have to concede that Tech is either same or better than Florida. Unlike Gailey, Johnson will have the team ready and focused, so a letdown is very unlikely. A loss will only come if their defense is loaded with talented defensive ends and linebackers who can shut the triple option offense down. None of the remaining 3 teams are that talented so I don’t see a letdown for now but I am concerned about the ACC championship and the Orange bowl.games.

I think all Tech fans have gotten accustomed to losing at least one game per year that we should have won. However, we are far from alone in that respect. Think USC … every year they lose at least one game within the PAC10 … costing them not only a chance at the National Championship, but often a chance at the Rose Bowl as well. Likewise, Florida has lost a game to an SEC West team every year for a while. Fortunately for the Gators, they always seem to lose early enough in the year that they have time to recover … and they NEVER lose a game in the SEC East. That gets them into the SECCG, and ultimately into the MNC picture.

The point is this … in order to compete for the highest prize at the end of the year, you must certainly be good … but it’s equally important that you be LUCKY … at least once each year. Tech’s luck ran out in Miami several weeks ago, keeping us out of the National Championship picture this season. However, we’ve been good enough (and/or lucky enough) to win everything else. Let’s hope it’ll last for five more games.!

Go Jackets!

Josh most definitely should be in the Heisman talk. But there is one big thing going against him – the offense we run. Even though an option-based attack won Nebraska 3 national titles in 4 years, Tommie Frazier, one of the best college QBs in the last 40 years, didn’t get a Heisman. I think Josh is similar to Tommie and will probably end up the same way Heisman-wise. Not to mention Tebow gets WAY more press because he’s at Florida, they started #1, he a big Christian, he does circumcisions, etc. ;)

No let down tomorrow. The next to the last step to Tampa. Even though our Jackets can’t wear white – YOU CAN! Get “Toe Meets Leather” at http://www.stinGTees.com today!

GTRich –
Settle down – you’re sounding like a delusional Dawg fan. GT will be focused and prepared but there is no way we are going to beat UGA by 39 points. UGA has plenty of talent and they will come into Bobby Dodd fired up and won’t quit.
I expect the Jackets to win against UGA but it will be a battle and I’d be happy with a 1 point victory

I’m with you, Paul. UGA will be tough. So will Wake and Duke. beating Clemson or FSU again in the CG won’t be easy, either. Let’s take’em one at a time.

Nesbitt is a warrior, but the Heisman votes will be cast too early for Josh to be a factor. He’d have to have an even more impressive year next year…and become a much better passer. All he does is heave it up, and we’ve been lucky our guys have out-jumped those little MSU and Vandy DB’s. He was less effective against Clemson and Miami.

Wow, I did not realize that Nesbitts numbers were that comparible with Tebows. As much as I love Tech and think Josh is doing a great job this season, I dont think he is as good as Tebow. I think that one of the major problems with Tebow this season is having to learn to work with a new OC since Mullen departed for MSU. It brings to me in mind of George Godseys junior to senior season. As a junior Godsey had Ralph Friedgen as an OC and he was an offensive mastermind much like Dan Mullen. After the season Friedgen left for Maryland. In come Bill Obrien as the OC and with basically the same skill player as the year before Godsey just didnt seem like the same QB, he still had excellent numbers but something just seemed to be missing, not to mention the fact that he tore his knee up in the peach bowl against LSU at the end of the junior season. This season seems much like that for Tebow. Im a big Tebow fan and would love to see him take home the hardware again this season, but at this point I dont think he is truly deserving it this season. I am also one of those Tech fans that has come accustomed to a heartbreaking loss every season, im hoping that this years heartbreaking loss was against Maimi. I still believe if the scheduling had been different that would have been a different game. Lets hope that is our only hiccup of the year. I truly think we still have a shot at winning out and possibly finishing in the BCS top 5. Just take it one game at a time and we will be fine. Dont look ahead just take care of business at hand. Hopefully then Dwyer, Nesbitt, Allen, Thomas, D. Morgan, and M. Burnett will come back for their senior seasons and we will be in the running for the BCS championship. If Nesbitt keeps playing like he is I think he will get much mention for the Heisman next year. Go Jackets!!

Looking at ESPN’s “Heisman Watch”, the Oregon QB (Masoli) has one good game against USC. And now he’s a candidate?

Nesbitt’s numbers > Tebow’s numbers > Masoli’s numbers.

If GT and FL played during the regular season Tech would probably win. However if they played in a bowl game FL would probably win. e.g. last year against LSU. When a perennial or team with talent has a month the completely focus on CPJ offense. Opponent/kids learn to play stay at home discipline/assignment football. RAMBLIN WRECK!!!

The big difference that everyone seems to be over looking with the comparison to UF is the defense. Our offense may be a step above UF, but our defense is not even close to being in the same league as UF’s. I have said it many times before, GT would be a great team if we had a defense. GT Rich seems to think we will crush UGA. I have NO idea how he arrives at that conclusion, since our D let one of the WORST offense’s in the country score at will. That would be Vandy, for anyone who has already forgotten. I will just put it this way, again, GT will never be a championship team without having a GREAT defense! Period. GTrich, we will be lucky to beat Wake and Duke much less crush UGA!

Techman78

Yeah the obvious difference between the jackets and the gators is defense. There defense is out of this world good. I will have to agree with gt4ever as far as championships are concerned. We will not win a BCS championship until we have a great defense, for that to happen I think we have to get a Jon Tenuta clone to come run our D. ACC championship, that is attainable but not the BCS. However, I dont think we will have to be “lucky” to beat wake and duke. Just play solid like we have been we should be ok. As far as the UGA game, it will be a slugfest. There season is in shams and all they have to play for at this point is pride. They will pull tricks out and do everything they can to ruin our season.

I sure hope your right Techman78… I just wonder how long the Offense can sustain all these points, without any help from their teammates on the other side of the ball. I agree, no more cupcakes, not even Duke. If you think about it we really havent had any cupcakes this season. Jacksonville State is not a bad team. They took FSU down to the wire and really should have beat them. I have been very worried about todays game all week, all season for that matter. Wake Forest scares the crap out of me as a Tech fan. They can throw the ball really well and we dont defend the pass worth a crap. That said, I dont really think they can stop us offensively, even though they have theoretically already faced us (Navy) once this season. If I seem to recall Navy rushed for 338 yards against them and won the game without even attempting a pass. The difference between us and Navy is that we are bigger, stronger, faster, and have more game breakers. Navy may run the offense a little more precisely than we do at this point but I think we are more “big play” capable. Plus we do have the ability to pass the ball a little too. I think we win the game but closer than many may expect. Lets say 45-38. Go Jackets!!!

Slow down just a bit Adam and give me some of the kool aid your drinking because I wanna feel like that too. We are not ready for that just yet. I would love to see us do that but first-Florida has a much better D than any team we have played all season long and second-that is an almost impossible scenario for us to even be in position to play the Gators at seasons end. Even if we win out…convincingly and win the ACC championship…convincingly several teams would have to lose to catapult us to that point. The ACC as a league does not get much respect nationally so my money would be on Florida playing a one loss team such as Texas (if they do slip up and lose a game). I do however like the confidence you have in the jackets, a couple more consecutive wins and I will build more confidence in them myself. I think that Paul Johnson has almost got these guys believing they can beat anyone on any given day. I am starting to believe that they actually can. When Gailey was here I never knew what to expect from one quarter to the next, not to mention from one game to the next.

GASooner talked about the difficulty GT could have when teams have 4 weeks to prepare their defense – like in the Peach Bowl last year (sorry – but I just can’t call it the Chik-Fil-A Bowl).

I agree that GT would be more likely to beat a top team in mid November during the run of the season, but there is another way of looking at it than the other team had 4 or 5 weeks to prepare for the bowl game. GT’s offense will have been off for weeks. Think about this season and last – how GT’s offense improved during the course of the season. It relies on precision, decision making and execution.

The Orange Bowl will be 31 days after the ACCCG and anything can happen in that time.

Just a thought.

Good point, Tech did look pretty rusty in the Peach Bowl last year, LSU also came in with a lot to prove as well. That combination doomed us fro the opening kickoff. IF we make it to the Orange Bowl this season I believe that coach will take a complete business approach to it this time realizing that we have alot to build apon for next season. For now we must concentrate on the Deacons today, we cant make the ACCCG if we dont beat the Deacs and the Devils. Go Jackets!!!

I’m a life long Red Sox fan, so I know what that “other shoe” feeling is like. But it’s also a great feeling when it doesn’t happen.

As far as a letdown goes for Duke, the ACCCG or the Orange Bowl goes, I don’t think it’ll happen. This team is more mature and they have a bad taste from last year’s Peach-Fil-A bowl to remind them to focus. They believe in CPJ more, too. I’ll bet the 2010 GT team would beat the 2009 GT team 48-28.
