8-1…No Matter How You Look At It…

So…the Jackets are 8-1 with three games remaining against Wake, Duke, and UGA.  The Wake and UGA games are at home in Bobby Dodd Stadium, while the Duke game is on the road.  This is a good thing, because the Tech defense seems to travel without its “man card” whenever we have a road game.

I watched the Vandy game while handing out candy last night, so lets get to it without any further idle chatter…

The Good

Jonathan Dwyer – 186 yards on 22 carries with three TDs.  The Diesel was running hard and with attitude.

Josh Nesbitt – 193 yards and two TDs via the air and 56 yards and two TDs on the ground.  Can you say dual threat?

Roddy Jones – 80 yards and one TD on just nine carries.  Roddy was running tough and fighting for yards.

Offensive Line – These guys are blocking their butts off and are fighting through a variety of aches, pains, and injuries.

56 Points – Yup…56 points, no need to say anything more…597 total yards of offense and almost 40 minutes of time of possession.

Halftime Adjustments – The first half score was a 28-28 tie.  The second half score was a 28-3 blowout.

The Bad

Halftime Adjustments – The fact that we had to make halftime adjustments after giving up 28 points to Vandy is a “bad” thing.

Bad Angles and Missed Tackles – The defense was taking bad angles, allowing Vandy ball carriers to get extra yards.  And often when they took good angles they missed tackles that could have ended drives or prevented points.

The Ugly

Special Teams – Have we ever had a worse kickoff team?  We can’t kick the ball into the endzone and we can’t maintain lanes and tackle returners.  When I watch other games on TV it seems like every other team is capable of kicking deep or tackling the return man before or around the 20.  Why can’t the Jackets do it too?  We’re giving up too much field position, no to mention points…

31 Points – 31 points to Vandy…are you kidding me?

Looking Ahead…

This coming weekend we host a 4-5 Wake Forest team.  But don’t let that record fool you.  Jim Grobe is still coaching at Wake and they have been known to rip the heart out of GT seasons in the past.  (They pretty much ruined Joe Hamilton’s Heisman campaign in ‘99…)

The Deacons lost tough games to Baylor (24-21), Boston College (27-24 in OT), Navy (13-10), and Miami (28-27) in a game they should have won.  So we can expect this to be a tough game against an opponent that is much better than their record.

Then we’ve got Duke…5-3 Duke…Duke which has gone 3-1 on the road and 3-1 in the ACC with wins over NCSU, Maryland, and Virginia in their last three games.  Duke which is averaging 400 yards and right at 30 points a game behind Thaddeus Lewis at QB.  Duke…which is Tech’s biggest remaining challenger in the ACC Coastal.

And of course UGA…who we all know about.  The biggest question there may be whether or not the Dawgs try to mimic Grambling when they come to Atlanta or if they might try the yellow and green of the Packers.  They way Mark Richt has coached the past few years, there is no telling what motivational gimick he may try…

Go Jackets!

Beat the Deacons!

Yes, Duke is looking good, Cutcliffe is doing a great job, we could use some Tech fans making the trip to Durham. Skinner is a good QB at Wake, recovering from a concussion otherwise may have pulled off the win over Miami, no time to rest, every week is a battle..

I agree about our inability to kick the ball into the endzone. Absolutely pathetic. You mean to tell me that we can’t find someone on the GT campus that can kick the football into the endzone?? CPJ – hold tryouts immediately! There is no excuse. I watch high school kickers (from the 40) kick the ball out of the endzone every Friday night. We have to do better. We give the other team excellent starting field position because we kick the football like a da** girl.

CPJ – get this fixed NOW!!

One thing, I believe the schedule has been tough without the week off coming until after the Duke game. Should GT win out against Wake and at Duke, you got to think about strategy vs. the Dogs. You want to be top notch heading to Tampa which is more important than Georgia although what a feat to pull off 4 more wins!

We need to give every game our all. Both Wake and Duke are good teams and can beat us if we let them. Heck, if DUKE wins out THEY go to Tampa. About UGA, you know what they say about messing with hurt dogs. We need to mash on the gas against them and have Joe Cox do his best AJ Suggs imitation and throw pick-sixes all day long. I want us to one-up 51-7 (51-3, 58-7, etc.).

Respect everyone and fear no one. Tampa will come if we TCB.

What were UGA coaching staff thinking? Dressing up as to your own funeral… I think we’ve been spoiled by CPJ last two years. I hope it does NOT happen, but if we have a loss in next three games, no one gets too upset with him.
There wasn’t even a tiny bit of doubt in my mind last night, even when we were trailing after half time, that we’d pull through. If Chan was our head coach, I would have turned off the game.

All due respect to the Commodores, but I think Tech just had their off game, as is evidenced by the second half. If we show up and execute, we’ll get it done. I’m thinking that a lot of long time fans, myself included, are just sitting around waiting for the team to screw it up when we ought to be grateful we have a coach and a team that seem to be working above all of that. I still think this was our trap game and the rest of the season we have our heads on straight, go out and play Jacket ball, and get it done!

Nobody has mentioned it yet, but I was glad to see Jaybo Shaw get some snaps last night. He and Orwin Smith looked pretty good running the offense.

I agree with the comment above that Vandy was a tough game for Tech. Vandy has a horrible record, stadium only half full, no impact on conference race and a defense that is actually better than their record indicates. I sure wish we had an answer for the kickoff coverage and big play problems, but you have to give the Jackets credit for always finding a way to come back.

No reason to talk about any opponent other than Wake. With or without Riley Skinner at QB, Wake will come to Grant Field ready to play hard. It would really be nice to see both offense and defense play a complete game and not give up any cheap scores.

Last comment; I sure wouldn’t want to be a linebacker or DB trying to tackle Jonathan Dwyer right now. Dude is hitting his stride at the perfect time of the season and is really blowing up some defenders.

GTMAn is right,

The kickoffs are HORRIBLE. Find a soccer player, someone, anyone, that can kick the ball far enough!
PJ said he’d have it fixed. We have to believe he will find that soccer player somehow, or this will eventually cost us a game.

The reason that Tech is 8-1 is because thanks to God and Greyhound (and DRAD) chan gomer gailey is gone forever. We would still be mired in the muck if gomer was still here.

And any of you Tech fans, that are currently enjoying the success of Paul Johnson, if you ever supported or defended chan gomer gailey in any way, you suck as bad as he did.

Wake, though they gave Miami all they could handle, it not so much a worry. Thaddeus Lewis and Dook worry me the most. On the road. Right before U[sic]GA. We will have everything to play for, but if we get complacent like the D did last night in the first half or starting looking ahead, we’ll have trouble on our hands with the quickness. Not to sound too much like m, but I’m glad we have CPJ to kick ‘em in the butt and focus on the task(s) at hand instead off Chan. One game at a time…it’s more than a cliche – for Tech fans, it’s now a way of life!

I agree with TML. In case you guys didn’t know, Duke leads the ACC in passing yards per game (yeah, even more than FSU, who torched us). The game is on the road, their defense is serviceable, and everyone assume they are Dook. I can smell trap on this game a mile away. I’m hoping the team can too. I’m not missing my trip to Tampa, because of FREAKING DOOK!

Also, as of now, there are no plans of bringing the band to Duke (budget issues i think), so I don’t know who you should harass about that, but please do.

Keep telling yourself that, that you are 8-1 no matter how you look at it.

Playing Duke, Vanderbilt, Jacksonville State college, North Carolina, Mississippi State college, Virginia, Weak Forest, and by stark contrast – no good team.

It is NOT Georgia Tech.

Let’s see 3 SEC teams ranked ahead of the top-ranked ACC team.

Georgia Tech’s SoS for all games this year, shows that Tech’s Opponents have a LOSING RECORD by several games.

Oh, but we play 3 SEC teams you say. Excuse me, you have not played any good teams, and will NOT do so.

SEC has 3 of the Top 9 teams in college football, and the ACC has ZERO.

37-39 record of all teams on Georgia Tech’s schedule this season.

UGA’s opponents are 16 games OVER .500. Oh, Georgia Tech fans (both of you) are so damn great.

48-32 record of all teams on UGA’s schedule this season.

Georgia Tech has NOT played and will not play any one. Miami of Florida has not played and will not play any one.

For this, we are to suppose that it is the right thing to do while we get our coaching staff squared away right now in here, that Tech should come in here and brag.

Run your mouths.

Take your Loss Number 60 from UGA as you always do.

Do you have any idea who has LOST 59 games to 1 single opponent Tech fans (both of you) ?

Where is the ACC’s Florida, LSU or Alabama ? You don’t have 1.

Who has Tech played ?

Will Tech even get to play Florida, LSU or Alabama ? Hell no.

You will go to the Orange Bowl in Miami where no one goes to football games at all.

You will do this after you play a totally unranked ACC team from the Atlantic Division in a conference Chumpionship no one will attend, or even watch.

Florida plays, instead, LSU and handed LSU their only loss of the season in a real conference.

Alabama plays, instead, LSU this week.

LSU plays, instead, Number 1 Florida and Number 3 Alabama.

The winners of these games play each other in The Conference Championship, obviously. The winner of that game plays for the national championship, and the loser plays in the Sugar Bowl which will be sold out and watched by everyone in the country.

You cannot even sell out your own stadium for the 1 game against a team only ranked because they didn’t play any one either, like Tech. The day of the game, you Tech fans were still offerng 4 cokes, 2 hotdogs, 2 bags of peanuts, and a parking pass to come down there in the slums of Atlanta where all the crime and drugs are and buy a ticket to your lousy scheduled games in a sorry-butt conference, quite obviously.

8-1 against no one.

Beat Wake Forest!
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this season. It was a beautiful drive up to Nashville. Our players have worked so hard from spring practice through the summer and every week this season. The effort that they have left on the field for every game is excellent. Vanderbilt was fired up going in to halftime and when they came back for the third quarter. The Jackets kept rolling and shut the Dores. Twice this season we’ve given up kickoff returns. Fortunately, our offense has been able to answer. If we bear down on Wake and not give them anything easy, we could have a good game.
Johnson said that he was going to fix the kickoff coverage this week. I believe him.
Let’s fill Bobby Dodd this Saturday to show our appreciation for the great effort we’ve seen by our JACKETS and Coach Johnson, who are now ranked #10 in the nation.

Two of Florida’s wins: Charleston Southern, Troy with Florida International yet to be played
Three of LSU’s wins: Washington (0-12 in 08), Louisiana-Lafayette, Tulane, with Louisiana Tech yet to be played
Two of Alabama’s wins: Florida International, North Texas, with Chattanooga yet to be played
Florida 8-0 against no one

Georgia lost to Oklahoma State who couldn’t stay on the field with Texas, and lost to Houston who lost to UTEP, and Tennessee (4-4) who couldn’t beat UCLA (3-5) at home.

#10 Georgia Tech 8-1

College football does not award points for number of fans in the stadium or merchandise sold. On the field, where the game actually takes place, Georgia Tech is 8-1, UG is 4-4. Of course, you already knew that.

Yes, the defense had a tough first half against Vanderbilt. Lets not forget this is a Bobby Johnson coached team who plays great teams tough every year. I think our problems in the first half were as much to Vandy’s credit as anything. We’ve got tough games left, and believe me when I say each of our next three opponents will be playing inspired football when the “Top Ten Jackets” come to play. Yes, due to past experiences, a lot of Jacket fans keep expecting a let down, but this is a different team, a different coach and a different attitude. These kids and this coach are willing to leave it all on the field, and whether we run the table or not, I love this attitude and I like our chances, week in and week out. GO JACKETS, and THWG.

sounds like BuLLdog is a lil upset that his puppies suck this year! Funny if a bottom feeder SEC team beats one of their powerhouses, their fans say “well thats the SEC for ya, any team can win on any given day because we are so diversed from top to bottom”. funny how the story changes when a lowly ol’ acc team is 2-0 thus far against the mighty SEC its “because we dont play anybody good from the SEC”.

Our offense can stay with most any team in the country. Our defense and special teams are not so great. Good at times but not great. I believe CPJ will make the necessary adjustments but he can only make adjustments not play. Our guys need to get their heads screwed on for the next three games because these will be the toughest games of the season. It is a climb to the top of the mountain that the Jackets can make if they just play smart football.

At least half the poster realize that beating Wake should be the focus. Any talk right now about beating UGA 51-7 is ridiculus.

BuLLdawg, didn’t you just copy your post from that last column I read?

Great as he is, Nesbitt has a long way to go to becoming a threat as a passer. He just heaves it up, and we’ve been lucky our guys have been out-jumping the little DBs. Teabow is Peyton compared to Josh.

Lum,
Nesbitt is surely a threat to pass it. That was proven again with the tosses to Peebles and Thomas. True, he throws a lot of jump balls Thomas’ way, but it seems to work.

I hope opposing defenses think the way you do and keep forgetting about the pass. Josh will make them pay.

I said this last year and I’ll say it again. Our kicking game is going to kill us and cost us a ball game sometime in the near future. Blair is a great kid with a lot of guts. He makes saving tackles game after game but he is not a college kicker. We need someone who can at least get it to the end zone. I watch high school games and almost every kicker I’ve seen kicks it into the end zone for a touchback. Please CPJ, find someone who can kick the ball. Or just let Blair kick it out of bounds every time. The forty looks pretty good as apposed to touchdowns.

I believe it was said best on 790TheZone yesterday morning – UGA plays a bad game and LOSES by 24. GT plays a bad game and WINS by 25.

BuLLdawg: You already posted the same thing on Doug’s blog. So come up with some new material. Why don’t you put GT’s OOC schedule up against LSU, Alabama and Florida?? Also, in the lastest BCS, there are 3 SEC schools and 3 ACC schools in the top 25. The only thing that the fact that the SEC has 3 schools in the top ten shows how weak the rest of the conference is. The SEC is LSU, Alabama, UF and the 9 dwarfs. And your comment about the Cokes, hot dogs and tickets is getting old – that was 2 years ago. That actually describes the UGA men’s basketball team this year. Plus, the way things are going for UGA football, that will be describing that program in a few years. Let’s see how many empty seats there are this Saturday for TT.

The bottom line is that if GT beats WFU and Duke, the UGA game means NOTHING. The only team who’s season will be made is if UGA beats GT.

Hi everyone, According to Doug Roberson’s article Wake wants to wear the white jerseys. Well, I think GT ought to tell Wake to shove it. We are undeated at home in white. Why should they get to choose, it is our home game. Do they not get to run the show on their own field? They pulled this stunt in Jacksonville 3 yrs ago and looked more like GT that we did. Probably was Grobe’s plan. If you think GT should wear white, than please email athletic department and let them know. Thanks!
