Do the Jackets turn the Corner this Weekend?

I remember exactly where I was in 1990 when Scott Sisson kicked the game winning field goal to beat the #1 Hoos in Charlottesville.

I was at my friend Brian’s house watching on TV and when that kick sailed through the uprights we went nuts, hopped on my motorcycle, and rode through downtown Barnesville GA screaming and honking the horn.  After junior college, Brian went on to UGA and I went to GT…but that Scott Sisson kick was something I’ll bet we both remember fondly to this day.  It was a helluva football game and high drama to a couple of college guys who loved college football.

Unfortunately, since 1990, Charlottesville has been something of a House of Horrors for the Jackets.

1992…55-22 loss

1995…24-7 loss

1997…35-31 loss

1999…45-38 loss.  Despite having Joe Hamilton under center and a #7 ranking coming into the game.

2001…39-38 loss.  Hook and Ladder…’nuff said…

2003…29-17 loss.  Matt Schaub and Heath Miller dominated us.

2005…27-17 loss.  A three game win streak and Top 25 ranking squandered.

2007…28-23 loss.  Peerman and a muffed punt seal our doom.

The ‘92, ‘95, and ‘97 games were during the dark period of the mid – ’90s and were understandable to a degree.  But the losses since ‘99 have come during a period where GT has had arguably better teams than UVA.  Its almost as if Bobby Ross signed some sort of bad mojo, black magic contract back in 1990 that we’re still paying off with heartbreaking and season impacting losses at the hands of the Hoos.

So…now…here we are…in 2009…with a 6-1 record and a #11 ranking…heading to Charlottesville yet again, to face the Hoo Curse.

Up to this point, Paul Johnson has been a drought breaker…beating FSU, beating UGA, winning on the road at FSU, defeating VT this past weekend.

Does this team have the FOCUS and INTENSITY to break the Charlottesville curse and capitalize on the good momentum, high ranking, and national recognition that is beginning to shine our way on the Flats?

The real question is this…can the Yellow Jackets finally “turn the corner”?

We stand at the intersection of success or failure, recognition or resignation, pride or shame, and ultimately the step required to return Georgia Tech football to its long lost and rightfully earned seat amongst the college football elite or the slip that will relegate the Jackets once again to the status of just another also-ran.

Make no mistake fellow Yellow Jackets…this is a big game coming up this weekend…

Go Jackets!

Beat the Hoos and Break the Curse!

Of course GT will win and break the “curse” this Saturday. Just like the last two weeks, we have everything to play for and CPJ will most definitely remind our Jackets of that all week.

I remember watching the game and Sisson’s kick that night. Two unbeatens teams in an in-conference matchup halfway through the season. A national CBS audience with Jim Nantz calling the play-by-play. The burned Astroturf the morning of the game and the questions of ‘will the game be played today?’. I was in my parent’s living room and was in awe of the game going back and forth and then ending the way it did. Absolutely amazing. Made me start looking at the Institute, and it paid off with me deciding to go there.

Before I broke out my pencils this past winter, Sisson’s kick was the first great moment in Tech’s legacy I wanted to depict. Pick up the result of my inspiration from that 1990 win – the “Toe Meets Leather” t-shirt – soon to be offered as a framed/unframed print – at http://www.stinGTees.com! Be the center of attention/conversation at your game-watching party this Saturday!

Just do your job! Curses and streaks don’t mean squat in the game. Interesting to talk about, but doesn’t help you run, tackle, or kick. Do your job, the rest will take care of itself. Go Jackets!

This is the first point in the season where I can sit back and really enjoy a game confidently… A lot of the games up until now had me a little worried, but now I am sure that PJ will have them ready to play this Saturday. Our offense has become an unstoppable force over the last few games and it finally appears that our D has really turned it on.

Last week we made a huge statement… we’re not gonna let anyone start second guessing us at this critical point. Look for a big win over UVA this Saturday. GT 38 UVA 14

I think too that Tech will end its Charlottesville nightmere and here’s why:

In his initial season, CPJ dropped ACC games to Virginia Tech, NortynCarolina and Virginia. He has already avenged the first two and will complete the trifecta Saturday. He takes losing personally, something a coach on the Tech campus has lacked for quite some time.

New coach, new offense, new attitude.

I like PJ’s quote that he doesn’t have a streak at UVA.

I have heard some say that this is a “trap” game, but I really don’t see that. Everyone is aware of the record in Charlottesville. Everyone is aware that UVA is currently on top of the division. Everyone is aware that another loss by GT puts them out of the race.

There is nothing but incentive to come out and dominate this game. I only hope they come out focused and not over-amped.

Unfortunately, my kid has a soccer game at 1pm, so I will have to follow the game on my cell. Anyone know of a good iPhone Ap that would make this easier?

Great post! Thanks for bringing back my favorite football memory of all time. I watched the ‘90 game in the rec room of the Techwood dorm. Within minutes of Sisson’s kick sailing through the uprights, the dorms had emptied and Techwood Dr. was packed with celebrating students. The impromptu party went well into the night (and I believe our own BDS goalposts came down, if I’m not mistaken).

The tradition of under performing and losing games we’re supposed to win left with Gailey. UVAs offense is a lot closer to UNCs than FSUs or VTs. Our defense will handle it’s business, and our offense will continue to roll! Any lingering fears of a “trap game” will be gone by the end of the 1st quarter.

“Interestingly, Georgia Tech currently projects to have a stronger chance at remaining undefeated from this point forward than do any of the undefeated contenders. By our calculations, there remains an 80 percent chance at least one of the one-loss teams will participate in the BCS national championship game this season. If Georgia Tech, Miami or USC can take advantage of the right timing of losses, they’ll be right in the mix to claim a spot.”

I continue to be amazed at the number of national outlets that are picking UVA and weekly pick against GT. It’s not that it can’t happen, but what in this years performance would lead you to that pick. The only conclusion I reach is that they all believe that LSU solved Tech’s offense and if teams were just smart enough to follow the roadmap Tech can be stopped. What a bunch of nonsense – does last weekends shutout of the Detroit lions doom the pro set at every level – not likely

The 1990 UVA-GT game is without a doubt one of the best college football game I’ve ever watched. My memory of the TV coverage was the halftime show with Mike Francesa going on and on about how UVA was getting it together and watch them really pull away in the second half. Well, they didn’t and I’m not even sure if they let Mike back on the air for postgame commentary. I didn’t think Musburger made the calls in that game because I think he left CBS in April 1990 very shortly after his totally lopsided comments favoring MSU when Tech played them in basketball enroute to the Final Four. Some of the more detailed points might fade over the years, but I for one will never forget that game as well as some of the heartbreaks we’ve suffered over the years since. I think the hook and ladder may be the worst of all of them. I’m just thankful I had to listen to that game on the radio so I don’t have to be reminded of seeing it happen.

I watched that glorious 1990 game in a strange place, Athens, GA. It was my girlfriend’s sorority formal that night, and I wathced the game from my hotel room while I was getting ready. When Sisson made that kick I was jumping up and down on the bed and screaming alone in my room in a suit and tie.

The next weekend I was down in St. Pete, FL enjoying the sunshine while I watched Scott Sisson kick two field goals in horrible, cold, rainy weather to beat Va Tech 6-3. The last of those field goals was a game winner in the 4th quarter. That game doesn’t get talked about enough, but that was a tough victory.

Earlier in the year I watched from the stands at Bobby Dodd as Chris Gardocki almost made a 60 yard field goal as time expired. Tech held on to win 21-19. It’s always great to beat Clemson.

Then I was back in Athens on the Saturday after Thanksgiving to watch the Jackets beat down the bulldogs. The same people who congratulated me the night of the Uva game weren’t as nice that day.

What a year! This one’s shaping up to be just as exciting! This weekend we TURN THE CORNER!!!

I have lived in Atlanta for a little over ten years! First, we never play you guys so we have no rivalry with you. So this is not personal!I am just curious that in all of the time I have been here I have never seen much support for your team. I have not seen many GT shirts, GT bumpers, GT anything!
I have taken some clients to several games and have never had a problem getting tickets and good ones at that. Even this year, and last weekend, I have gotten great seats on short notice. But suddenly I am seeing GT stuff! Why does it take a real good season to be a GT fan? In Florida you see Gator stuff everywhere and you can’t get a seat unless you pay big bucks to a scalper. And this has been the case for at least 35 years. And we have had some bad teams.
I just wished someone could explain to me the “bandwagon” mentality? Does this mean that when GT goes back to their old self…. it will go back to what it always has been?
Guys I just don’t get it. I would not give you the time of day for a Georgia fan but at least they are consistent. And you don’t get tickets there either! Not that I would go anyway!

I know too many UGA fans that didn’t go to school there, don’t give money, and don’t go to the games. So what kind of fan is that? You will find it difficult to find a TECH fan that didn’t go to school at GIT. My Dad is a 61 grad and I have been going to games with him since I could keep my butt in the seat and watch. I don’t go to Tech and don’t plan to attend the school but I have been a fan since I was a kid. GT was probably the first college football team I ever saw and that’s how it really got started for me. That’s probably one reason why there aren’t more every day Tech fans is because of the mentality of some alum that you have to have attended/or are attending the school to like them.

Big Gator-Finding Tech stuff has always been hard even for us Tech fans. I’m like 30 minutes or so from Athens so you know Tech gear is hard to come by where i’m at.

bugsquacher – your resentment is – delicious.

UVA does represents a corner. A BIG corner. As a student during the Gailey era, I am still trying to shake the jadedness brought on by this scenario. This is the Jacket’s game to lose – the big let down after the big win, the woulda-shoulda-coulda game. The game we are sitting around scratching our heads afterward wondering what the hell happened (we were supposed to win, right?)

These are the games that could have propelled the Gailey era teams from mediocre to above average. Instead we got the horrid losses to UNC… (ugh) Duke. These are the games that could push PJ’s above average team to excellence, to national recognition. LSU and UVA didn’t help that perception last year, but I’m really pulling for Saturday. If we do win, I’ll be hoping its not too late to finally jump on the CPJ bandwagon.

Hey, now hold on there Big Gator. I remember visiting Gainesville a few times in the late 80’s and early 90’s. I seem to remember seeing a whole bunch of Miami Hurricanes down there in that time. It really wasn’t until the Steve Spurrier era started that Florida experienced some band-wagon jumpers. Now that you guys have 2 National Championships, you talk like you have been a powerhouse since the days of George Gip.

I live in Lawrenceville, and you wouldn’t believe how hard it is to find GT stuff. Hard to even find a hat at the local sporting goods store. And believe me, I give them grief EVERYTIME I go in that store. But, things are looking up these days. With UGA performing their annual flop, I have noticed a couple places picking up some GT stuff. Heck, I saw GT cups and plates at Publix the other day! Of course, the UGA stuff out-numbered GT by 10-1, but it’s progress. And hell must have frozen over, the AJC is talking about the Jackets. True story, I was out of town for the season opener (Sept. 5th), and I was checking my phone for scores to keep up with what was going on. Tech had an early game and UGA was playing OSU at 3:30. I checked the AJC site on my Blackberry around 2:30, and while GT was playing, the AJC’s first article, or the ‘Above the fold’ headline said, and I kid you not, ‘Joe Cox on field warming up’, but there was NOTHING about the GT game, no score, no comments, nothing. And Tech had been playing for 2.5 hours! Not even a score! Come on AJC, you gotta do better then that.

This is all about milestones. In 1990, I was entering my senior year the Naval Academy, and remembered watching with interest Tech’s win. I’m interested in Tech because of CPJ. The man that single-handedly resurrected Navy football has a system that’s fun to watch. There are a lot of Navy fans that want to see his style and his effort rewarded on a national level.

As I said, this is about milestones. CPJ doesn’t care about historical streaks, no matter how long. At Navy, he ended a 40 year drought against Notre Dame. At Tech, it seems like every week brings the end of one streak or another. Last year it was UGA. This year, it was at FSU, Va Tech, and countless others. UVA should see the end of another bogus “curse” because you have a coach who makes his only luck and his own karma.

Everyone else is just going to have to deal with it.

Big Gator – you see things just like the Uga fans do and fail to use logic. The biggest reason that you don’t see Ga Tech gear everywhere and a packed stadium every week is because of the alumni base. I went to Tech in the late 80s. At my fraternity the pledges had to know everyone’s name, hometown and major. As I learned the more than 70 hometowns I saw that most of them did not come from the local area or even from the state. That was true of the entire student population. When those people graduated they didn’t automatically look for work in Atlanta and stay here. They were searching for jobs all across the country (high paying jobs due to their high intellect). With schools like Uga and UF, most of the students are from those states and 70% of the fans never attended a class on campus but live in the state. They all go to the games and buy their shirts and hats at wal-mart and the gas stations. All you have to do to be a Gator fan is buy an orange shirt and a pair of cut off jean shorts. That’s 80% of north Florida. Once CPJ builds this team back to national respect the local non-Tech grads and students will get excited about the program and jump on board. But don’t kid yourself, you can get a ticket to any Uga game you want right now for a song and the same was true when Ron Zook was in Gainesville.

Thank you to the ones who have attempted to explain why things are the way they are. First, I have been to a ton of games at Florida through the thick and the thin. And it has never been a easy ticket! and even when Zook was coach you couldn’t get a ticket. In fact most people wanted to be sure and go to the games to boo Zook and get him out. By the way.. it worked!
I am in retail and we purchase items that has a history of being bought by the consumer. We can’t put things on our shelfs that don’t move. So logic would say that the history is that the stuff don’t sale.
And as far as the alumni approach… I am a graduate of Florida with a bachelors and North Carolina with a masters. Most of the fans I have hanged with or go to games with did indeed graduate from UF. But I don’t think it makes much sense that you should only be a fan if you went there. In fact that is the weakest arguement I have heard from anything coming from a fan! But I guess it does allow a chance to justify poor support. I have traveled the country and in most cases the college teams have most of their fans in no way connected to the school.
In fact, I love GT basketball and go to a lot of games. I hope I am welcomed into the family even though I have never attented a class there. And along that same line did Coach Johnson or Paul Hewitt attend Tech? Both great coaches and very productive! I am glad you guys hired them in spite of them not attending the school!

Big Gator – You have a good question. The answer is that Vince Dooley captivated the football passion in this state and took it to Athens. The troubles the Falcons had for years also contributed to the jaded feelings about football in Atlanta. It was not always so. One of my first memories as a football fan was of my mother running through the house crying, “Tech beat Alabama!” There were the thrilling times that Notre Dame’s gold helmets fought GT’s at Grant Field. Then came along Vince and those red jelly bean helmets of the Bulldogs – a sight I learned to loathe. But hey, with Mike Smith and Paul Johnson, the heart of football in this state is gradually making its way back to Atlanta.

Bugsquacher-First learn to spell and second I think UGA should be preparing for 2 beat downs the first coming at the hands of the Gators and the second at the hands of Ga Tech. It’d be so nice if Tech laid the hammer on UGA and destroyed them 51-7 or so.

As an example of a non-Tech grad being a Tech fan, my brother-in-law, who unfortunately unexpectedly passed away Monday night, was a life-long Tech fan. After spending 3 years in the army in Korea, he belatedly graduated in 1959 from UGAG. Prior to his years in Athens, DURING his years in Athens, and for the entire remainder of his life, he was 100% Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket. From the late 40s till the late 60s, he and some or all of his 5 brothers, none of whom attended Tech, went to almost every home Tech game and many away games as well. And, I might add, he and his brothers all lived their entire lives in Augusta, so it was not always easy to get to Atlanta in those days. Fortunately, since he had been in decent health and his passing was unexpected, he was able to watch the VT game last weekend. I’m sure if the good Lord allows it, he will be watching Saturday as the Jackets win another one, further proving that the glory days of Ga Tech football are far from over. If Tech continues these winning ways, there will be a new generation of fans like him, and I welcome every one of them.

Here let me give you little boys a history lesson…. Since 1964, the Jackets have managed just 12 wins against Georgia. Let me say that again for all of you Jacket fans out there…12 wins in 45 games. To say that Georgia has dominated this series in the past 45 seasons would be a slight understatement. During that stretch of dominance, Georgia has posted win streaks of five, six and seven (twice). Tech has won three straight once (1998-2000).

Hey stupid, yeah you bugs. No one said you haven’t dominated the series since 64… But you, and we all know, that your dominance is over thanks to CPJ. Get use to it. CPJ will get Mark Richt run out of the cesspool, because not only can you not beat the gators, now you won’t dominate us either. You inbreds are in trouble, and the rest of us are laughing at you.

hey independent thinker, beyond the shadow of a doubt, I make more in 1 month than you make in 12, so dont go there….you will be embarrassed. Unlike you (who probably never finished anything higher than the 10th grade) let me know when you want to compare tax returns. Btw, you are somewhat right, what have we done lately? won 7 of the last 8. Im sure you would agree a boss that looks at only the last year instead of the performance over many (3,5,8,40+) years would be silly in his evaluation. Im sure you dont understand this so let me spell it out for you….over the past 8 years GT has won 1 game. In the past 45 games, GT has won 12. Any logical person would agree UGA gets an excellent rating in its historical play in football over GT. Since we continue to kick GT’s a$$ consistently year after year.

bugs, you sure didn’t kick our a$$ lastyear, now did you. Nor did you kick Bama’s, Florida’s, OK State’s, or Tennessee (not a very good track record against them either). And you.still haven’t explained your failure over the past 15+ years to even compete with UF. Hell, you haven’t even won 2 in a row over the gators during that time, have you? And it’s easy for a fool like you to post comments in here bragging about a fantasy income, when you don’t have the b**ls to put your name or email address or any other identifying information. You are totally full of s***t.

Tech fans continue to sit there and post the dumbest thoughts on National Championship Game.

Miami of Florida beat you soundly 33-17.

Tech has to be within 5 spots and have beat Miami of Florida head-to-head, which Tech did not.

Miami of Florida is also ahead of Georgia Tech by 3 positions in the BCS Rankings.

Neither team plays a single good team, except Tech plays UGA whom they will never beat, in the last game.

There are no other even beginning to be reasonable opponents for either Georgia Tech nor Miami of Florida.

Nothing Georgia Tech can do to jump Miami of Florida, and if Georgia Tech did jump Miami of Florida and Miami of Florida is within 5 spots of Georgia Tech, Miami of Florida goes to the BCS Bowl Game representing this said sorry conference, the ACC.

This is because Georgia Tech LOST to Miami of Florida head-to-head 17-33.

Your season was over the nanosecond you LOST to Miami of Florida.

You will NOT beat UGA anyway, and will drop farther behind Miami of Florida.

You have run your mouth about how great you are in a sorry conference because instead of LOSING to UGA for the 60th time, you delayed that 60th LOSS to UGA until this season.

I hope that this clarifies just how absolutely void of any common sense you are at Georgia Tech.

National Championship, B.S. Tech has NEVER EVER been ranked Number 1 by the AP Poll ever. And, this year is obviously no different with you Number 13.

Now, run your mouth some more.

Gator and the rest of you who count fans and stadium sizes to judge a team. We don’t care ! As far as bandwagons go, that describes most of the UGA fan base. We are not ignorant to the fact the GT’s program declined after the Dodd years. In fact, many of your fans or their parents were formally dressed in white and gold and were the disloyal traitors among us. They know who they are, but most would never admit it. My father in law is Exhibit A.

Yes, Our numbers are small compared to your’s. We are proud to be the loyal few, who don’t give a sh*t about your numbers and popularity. We enjoy the underdog role and that makes our success all the more sweet.

Believe me, it extremely satisfying to see you squirm when we all see that a program with “average” recruits is outperforming your bunch of highly touted, undisciplined, undercoached, and usually over-ranked, prima donas.

Ben Wedekind, a 22-year-old international affairs major from Florida, can’t help that his mind wanders to Nov. 28 and the annual altercation the Bulldogs.

“That’s part of why people are so excited, because we appear to be so much better than Georgia this year,” he says with determination. “We’re gonna win. Oh, yeah.”

Thank God and Greyhound that chan gomer gailey is gone forever and that Tech football is back due to Paul Johnson. Hallleeeedamloooooyah.!!

What is sad is that I have tried to get a solid answer to my questions about the GT program. I really do enjoy GT basketball and like going to football games. I guess there is no answer out there for why the average person in one of the largest cities in America don’t support GT.
My goal was to find a local blog site that there was some fun and logical football talk. It took forever for there to be a blog site and now I get borderline “weak” answers. For as much as I hate anything UGA, at least they support their team through thick and thin. And yes even when we beat them again.
So as much as it pains me I am leaving this site and will spend my time and energy with something or someone that can make sense! As I depart please either come to the realization that there is very little support and quit making excuses. I learned a long time ago a real test of a man is to not make excuses but fix the problem! Heres hoping this happens. I really do enjoy my new adopted city and going to the games….. just not this site!…. bye

We’ll have fun in our cake walk against Vandy (Yeah, if you’re still clinging to that win last week, I have news… you beat the team that lost to ARMY – do you know how bad you must be to lose to Army?!)

yes, you have noticed i’m a little obsessive/complusive….a bit of a retard.

I am prone to hours of research to produce meaningless stats to post on blogs where no one cares.

While I try to point out GT is inferior to Ugay, i’m clearly obsessed with GT and its program.

Because my football program is spiraling towards mediocrity, I must find other things to focus on.

I am unable to deal with the fact that CPJ is one of the best coaches in the nation, better than any other college football coach in the state of Georgia.

I will now go do some further research on the merits of preseason national titles and how UGAy has more than GT.
