Offense Bails out the Defense in Starkville

Just a quick hit here, before I try to catch the end of the Miami vs Oklahoma game.  (Go ACC!)

If you had told me that the Jackets would throw for more yards than they would rush for, I’d have laughed.  But that’s just what happened as Josh Nesbitt went 11 of 14 for 266 yards and a touchdown.  Four different receivers caught passes, led by Demarius Thomas’ eight catches for 175 yards.

The Jackets still ground out yards on the ground as they ran 54 times for 216 yards.  But it was the passing game which saved the day.  And it definitely gives the FSU coaches something to look at and worry about before the upcoming game this next weekend.

I expected the Bulldogs to be able to run the ball.  They have a real stud in Anthony Dixon and he was instrumental in MSU running for over 200 yards on the Tech defense.  The Jackets defense didn’t seem all that keen on tackling anyone, especially Dixon.

It was a strange, strange game with huge momentum swings and big plays.  Kick returns for touchdowns, fumbles picked up for touchdowns, both teams fumbling balls away on their opponent’s goal line, and six fourth down attempts between the two teams…all of which were converted.

But…what is it the SEC fans always say?

“Its tough to win on the road in the SEC…”

Yup…sure is tough…and we’ll take the win and move onto the next game.  1-0 in the SEC sounds good no matter how you get there!

Go Jackets!

Beat the ‘Noles!

Big win. I predict GaTech gets more SEC wins than at least 4 others actual SEC schools this season. Bring on the Tallahassee Drama Club next week!

D. Thomas (who now goes by B. Thomas) gets the game ball and Josh Nesbitt is a close second. Great performance by the O line too. It just looked like whatever play Coach Johnson called was going to be successful.

Looked like the D took a pretty significant step backwards after last week against UNC. Tackling was pretty bad. During one drive, Morgan Burnett had to make 3 or 4 consecutive tackles on running plays. The D is going to need to play better than that the next few weeks if we are going to beat FSU and VT.

Always good to win on the road though.

I think the great defensive performance against UNC was due to UNC being so inept. MSt shredded our defense tonight….Womack better get busy or be gone. Our ST sucked as well. I hope Johnson won’t put up with this like O’leary did with Roof.

That’s pretty much how I felt the entire game. That’s why I wasn’t worried about Missy State’s O putting up some points.

Side note… Our next opponent, FSU, sure did lay an egg against BC today. I hope they just aren’t that good.

I second that Rob. D looked pitiful tonight and Womack has done nothing to impress me during his tenure. PJ won’t put up with it too much longer. Get the D in order and we can play against anybody.

This was a great win against a team that took LSU to the wire last week. Sure I’d like to see the D play better, but this is the team I expected all year–great offense, enough defense to win. Let’s get behind this team and this coach and fill up the stadium for VT no matter what happens at FSU next week.

Enjoy a big win Jackets!

I gotta quibble with you on this C-Dub. I think the O-Line still stinks. How many times were the DTs from Miss. St. in the Tech backfield? Too many, by my count.

This too. I felt like there were play calls that CPJ missed. It seemed like he was setting up big counter plays, but those plays were never called.

The Nesbitt/GT passing game kind of reminds me of 1997 when after a few games Joe Hamilton started to click in the passing game. If Tech keeps getting this kind of completion percentage and keeps getting the yards on the ground it’s 1999 all over again 400 to 500 yards offense. Now the D was inconsistent then too but had some good athletes that could make some big plays from time to time. The other thing is this MSU was a good team with what could become one of the best offenses around in due time. The experience against this spread option Florida like should help us down the road. Great game Jackets, CPJ and Staff!

The other thing is this MSU was a good team with what could become one of the best offenses around in due time.

Dixon is certainly a very good RB, but I’m not sure the other players are anything special. Mullen is a very good offensive play caller, and he deserves a ton of respect, but there was an unacceptable amount of missed tackles by GT in the game, and the players seemed to be out of position more often than not. I like MSU’s offense from a scheme standpoint, but from a personnel standpoint, there is nothing special about them besides Dixon.

I agree, the offense definately bailed the defense out on this one. The problem here is that when we start playing teams that can slow down our offense (like VT for instance), then we are going to be in trouble when we cant keep points off the board! Great win though. Go Jackets and Go ACC!

The win over MSU continues to prove that Paul Johnson is the superior football coach in this state. PJ expects more from his players and program than Mark Richt, which is the reason that the Jackets will continue to improve and remain the biggest threat to CMR’s career, which is now showing holes.

Alot of credit needs to go to Dan R for locating a quality coach with a high level of intensity and drive. PJ was successful at Georgia Southern and he has brought that same winning attitude to GT.

GT will not win every game, but their opponents will think about it when GT shows on their schedule. Matter of fact, LSU modeled their running game after GT during the UGA vs. LSU game, which required UGA to spread their defense.

It just feels good to win baby!

This is directed to all you GT “GREAT WIN!!!!” folks: I’m an MSU fan in Atlanta, and yeah, this loss makes me bitter. So let’s get that out of the way, so you don’t waste energy accusing me of bias. I’M BIASED.

But here are my observations from the game–ignore them at your own peril.

A lifelong MSU fan, I can tell you that State’s defense this season is NOT any good–our secondary is horrible, the worst we’ve had in years, and Torbrush, the coordinator, is shaping up to be the worst DC we’ve had since Ron Cooper in 2003. So I wouldn’t take Nesbitt’s success through the air as ANY indication that you’ll have similar success again this season. You won’t, unless you face a similarly horrible secondary/DC combo as ours.

State’s turnovers are a recurring problem this season, too–hardly “forced” by you guys and your stellar defense that gave up 487 yards. Don’t believe me? Watch the LSU game. We spotted you 21 points last night. Are you going to depend on the other team self-destructing week in and week out? That’s quite a formula for success.

The bigger issue you guys have is that when push came to shove, you couldn’t stop the run OR the pass. You gave up 487 yards to Mississippi State. Let that burn in.

On the upside, that Dwyer kid is a player.

Heh, good luck with the rest of the season.

CPJ fan, dogg news sells newspapers even when they lose. AJC is their marketing group. They don’t really really want Tech to be successful. To the AJC readers they write for, it’s like Vandy or Duke having a football team – how could players who are accepted on academics really play good football. And the majority of the Tech fan base actually attended Tech……

Wow TURD….you are pretty hard on your own team, especially after they looked very good in beating Vandy on the road and came within a 1/2 yard of beating LSU after pretty much dominating that game.

As far as 21 pts as a gift, well, we did fumble in your end zone once and allowed a long KO return for a TD…which we have not done since 1996. SO, your right, I won’t count on us fumbling the ball when trying to reach the ball for the endzone every game and will not count on allowing too many kickoff returns for a TD.

By the way, Lighten up a little, you guys may just be better than YOU think you are. I don’t think too many LSU fans (who are 5-0) would disagree.

Good win. Any win is a good win, but SEC on the road is really good.
OL is still a problem on offense. But it looked like all nine blockers made their blocks on the Allen touchdown.

Now put this one behind us & worry (we fans worry, team prepares) about
FSU on the road. Coach said in his post comments that the defense were not reading their keys. He has been saying that all year. Obviously there is a problem here. You cannot depend on the offense to score 35 points every game.

Yeah the Miami win was a big win for the ACC.

If Tech wants a good bowl game they need to run the table on the remaining ACC games & take one of the 2 remaining SEC games.

When was the last time FSU lost 3 in a row? They will do just that if we beat them. Scary thought. Nesbitt’s passing was pretty sharp last night. If he plays like this throughout the rest of the year, we will win. Def needs to get better. Too much standing around lazyness.

One thing everyone is overlooking is if we finished tied with miami and vt, meaning we all go 7-1 in conference, the team that goes to the acc champ game is the one ranked highest in the bcs. with miami winning, it’s sure to be them. so you better hope they stumble somewhere cause they aren’t going to rank gt ahead of them. we also need ga to do well to help our sos

Overall, way to go Tech, CPJ, and DRad. Proud to be a Tech fan!

One other point to note is that CPJ doesn’t have a short term focus. In recruiting, he has taken the approach to build relationships within the state, which will pay off further down the line. As the announcers kept pointing out last night, Tech loves CPJ !

Wommack last yr inherited Tenuta’s defensive players such as Vance Walker, Darryl Richard and Michael Johnson now all in the pros. Just curious if Tenuta was even offered an opportunity to stay on before heading to Notre Dame. Guess not. Just feel we would have been ranked a top 5 team if that happened. Just question Wommack’s ability when Spurrier fired him at South Carolina and after seeing the struggles this season thus far. Our offense deserves better, they really do.

One other comment…not happy about the Ramblin Wreck not in Starkville last night. Are we some I-AA school? That is our tradition, what’s up with that? I understand the Wreck was at Dacula Friday night but can Tech not have a duplicate for special appearances? What the hell would NASCAR do if not for a 2nd racecar they bring along to all the races..

TN GT: State is tons better with Mullen than they were at any point with Croom. I’m not about to deny that. That said, State’s defense with Ellis Johnson at the helm was tons better than what we have now with Torbrush. Actually, the Torbrush hire is the only thing that really gives me pause about Mullen.

These State fans you supposedly know–if they’re claiming our D is now better than EJ’s, that’s incredible. If they’re claiming that our D is currently better than what Croom fielded last season after Ellis Johnson left for South Carolina, then they’re delusional.
