Ramblin’ Thoughts about UNC

Around noon tomorrow we’ll begin to see if the Jackets have healed up, rested up, and gotten their heads on straight after the debacle down in Miami.

We’ll also get a look at how this coaching staff, including Coach Johnson, will react to obvious deficiencies on both offense and defense.

Offensive Thoughts

With Jaybo Shaw back in the depth chart is there any chance we see him take snaps against UNC?  Nesbitt has played poorly through large portions of the past two games.  But how poorly would he have to play in order for Shaw to come into this game?  I don’t think anyone had expected to see Jaybo before the Mississippi State game at the earliest.

With Tyler Melton back in the depth chart at wide receiver will we finally have a receiving threat on the far side of the field from Thomas?  The past few games its been obvious that one receiver was on the field to catch passes and one was on the field to block.  Its imperative that we have two receiving threats to put more pressure on defensive safeties who will then have to decide who to cover…the receivers or the a-backs?

Will the dive to Dwyer be snuffed out again?  If so, can we get the ball to him on the edge?  And then if we do, can we block anyone?  If the dive isn’t a threat then we can’t open up the edges and pitch outside.  That leaves only the QB midline option like we saw in the fourth quarter against Clemson.  The offensive line has to do their job between the tackles and get Dwyer some creases to take advantage of.

Defensive Thoughts

I mentioned the need to drop the 4-2-5 and get back to a 4-3-4 in my post Miami blog.  We need three linebackers on the field so that we can make up for a woeful defensive line in rushing and short yardage situations.  We also need to be able to mix up our blitzes and rush a linebacker or a safety if the defensive line is out there playing in roller skates again.

I’m encouraged to see Womack (and Johnson) show an ability and willingness to make defensive changes if something isn’t working.  Our previous coaching staff didn’t seem to be willing or able to make significant changes like we’re going to see tomorrow.  This is a good thing.

Keep an eye on Julian Burnett in this game at linebacker.  He could be our next young impact player…remember Darryl Smith, Key Fox, KaMichael Hall?

Thoughts about UNC

Noone knows how good UNC is.  They rolled Citadel, struggled against UConn, and played what appears to be a solid game against ECU.  The only thing we do know for sure is that Tech has played much tougher competition in Clemson and Miami.

I’d like to see this Tech team use revenge as a motivational factor, like Miami did against us.

Coach Johnson wants to beat UNC…he holds a grudge as good as anyone.

Go Jackets!

Beat UNC!

I don’t have a good feeling about this one. That usually means GT is about to play well, but it is hard for me to believe. The defense I saw 8 days ago could not have stopped any decent offense, and I am afraid that UNC will have a decent offense. Of course, maybe that was freak event, but it really reminded me of how our defense played toward the end of last season and for 2 quarters against Clemson this year.

So, I say Go Jackets, and no matter what, I will support CPJ and this team. But I do not have a great feeling about tomorrow. If it makes everyone feel better, though, I did have a good feeling about the Miami game. LOL :)

In my humble view, NC is overrated. The UCon game was a lucky win. ECU is not a quality win. I am not a GT fan but I picked them first on my 5 on 5 card. Im picking FSU, VT, TCU and Arkansas. All my friends think Alabama is going to run all over Arkansas, so, I will be 4 of 5 for the 3rd week…..and one 4 of 5 was a push

What’s wrong, Chris? No list of 10 reasons why GT will beat NC? Still feeling woozy after your piece about how GT was going to hand it to UM? Could it be that you’re showing some well deserved humility?

Tech’s problems on offense have nothing to do with who is playing QB.
The OL cannot block anyone. The A backs cannot block anyone. Go back this AM & look at the Clem & UM tapes. Notice how many tacklers came off of Tech blocks to make the tackle.

Tech’s problems on offense have nothing to do with what offense is being run. If the OL cannot block for this offense why does anyone believe they would block better in a pro-set or traditional I?

I trust no one is surprised that the defense is struggling.

This game, UNC, just about boils down to a season maker or breaker.

collegeball fan you are 100% right about techs offensive blocking , it has been terrible.i watches a few games i recorded from last years georgia and miami game and tech blocked very well in those 2 games. you see the key to making this offense explosive is the blocking.we beat miami and georgia easily bc we blocked well and the abacka and bbacks we able to get into open space.
i trust coach paul johnson that he will have us ready against nc and i predict this will be the make or break game for techs season.
tech wins 35-21

Hey Collegeball and Joey
So, your solution is “block better”. I’m glad you’re not coaching. How about making it easier to block better by throwing a few screens. Both Miami and Clemson were 3 yards in the backfield right after the snap. A couple of succesful screens would a) Keep the LB’s at home b)slow down the pass rush (making it easier to block) c) Give Nesbit and the offense some needed succes in the passing game.

Our pass rush was also pathetic. CPJ should give Tenuda a call and get some blitz tips.

The schedule continues to be tough up to the UVA game. Our boys look tired, they need some innovative coaching help. I trust CPJ will give it too them.

Life is good, your opinion indeed is humble. You forget that UNC throttled Tech last year (the fact that Tech rushed for 378 yards last year is meaningless). UNC also beat Miami and would have beat VaTech had they not lost their QB in the 3d quarter and had to play the rest of the game with a freshman who had never taken a snap and who consequently threw 2 ints. In addition, UNC is better this year, despite having lost a great trio of receivers. Their young receivers are as talented as any in the country. All three were 4-5 stars (Little, Jones, Adams). The Uconn game was not a piece of luck. They shut UConn down for the entire game. They gave up a TD when they fumbled deep in their own territory. UNC chanced up their offense in the last quarter and had to 80-yard drives. The safety came when UConn was 3d and 17 deep in their own territory and UNC’s defensive end (Quinn, one of the best around) bull-rushed the QB and was dragged down.

Hopefully some rest will make the difference. You could tell they were gassed during the Miami game. I guess 3 games in 12 days will do that to you. Hopefully having some days off will get ‘em back up to speed and the blocking and “D” problems were just due to being worn out. Quicker off the ball and quicker reaction times. Dam, I was supposed to be at this game but medical problems sidelined me. Can I get redshirted?

we should be up by more than 10 points. need to put a TD up on our opening possession of the second half and have the tarheels looking at a 3-score game. we have to be killing them in time of possession. keep it up, keep their D on tyhe field. GO JACKETS!

Well, it looks like you didn’t get what you wish. Mississippi State gave LSU all they wanted, so maybe you will have better luck next week? Look, Paul Johnson is a good coach, and he can build a very talented program just by getting UGA’s leftovers. They are going to win 9 or 10 games a year. Get used to it, and hope that all the 4 and 5 star players that you guys recruit do better.
