I Want My GT! How about you?

With the season fast approaching, I’ve been taking stock of my existing GT gear and clothing and have been thinking about what I need to replace or update or add this coming year.  (I know I at least need a new hat, my wife is afraid my current one is going to start moving around the house on its own…)

I just happened to be in the Super Target up here in Cumming with my daughter earlier this week and figured it was worth a look to see if they had a collegiate section.

I found a small area that was labeled as their college section and discovered that it was completely UGA gear.  And when I say completely…I mean 100% UGA gear.  No Tech, no FSU, no Auburn, no UNC, no Florida, no anyone else except UGA.  Every bit of gear and collectible stuff was flea bitten mutt paraphenalia.

That irked me a bit and as I walked around the store I started taking a mental count of how many people I saw wearing GT hats or shirts versus UGA hats or shirts.  By the time I checked out, the tally was six people with GT gear (including the guy behind me in the checkout line) and zero people with UGA gear.

So I asked a young girl who appeared to be an assistant manager where the GT stuff was.  Her reaction was that they didn’t have any and if I wanted GT gear I should go closer to Atlanta.  She also admitted that she was a UGA fan at which point I enlightened her about the strong GT population in North Fulton and Forsyth counties.  It was simply a bad business decision for Super Target to be so biased in their stocking selection…especially considering GT fans with money gravitate towards Target while our rival fans tend to gravitate to WalMart.

I just shook my head, shared a chuckle with the GT fan behind me in line, and commented that we’d just have to keep beating them in order to change the pecking order in the state.

When I got home I realized that there was something I could have done to be more prepared during that trip.

I could have gone to the I Want My GT website and printed out cards that are designed to be used in just this sort of situation.

Haven’t heard about this site yet?  Well…take a look here: I Want My GT

This is a great site where you can find stores that sell GT gear while also printing out cards that you can give to stubborn store managers around town…just to let them know that you want them to carry GT gear.

While Paul Johnson and the football team earns respect on the field, we GT fans need to step up and be very vocal about the fact that the Yellow Jackets are the home team and that we will remember and spread the word about retail outlets or locations that don’t acknowledge that fact.

Don’t just grumble and whine and walk out of that Kroger the next time you are assaulted by a sea of red tailgating gear…drop one of these cards on the manager and make yourself heard:

I Want My GT!

Go Jackets!

Chris I bet you don’t have a pot to pee in. GT fans with money? You paupers can’t even afford to buy tickets to your own stadium judging by your attendance. But you guys are untouched when it comes to being legends in your own minds.

Chris, actually the Target folks are extremely smart. They are well aware that when Tech comes out of September 1-3 they would be stuck with all the GT items when you bandwagon fans go back into hiding. And it is inevitable that you will. You are Tech and that is your place in the football universe. Out of sight and out of mind. Nobody in their right mind wants to load up on GT garbage, What are you complaining about anyway Chrissy? You’ll be able to pick up all the GT stuff you want laying all over the roadways after that 1st beatdown that gets put on you in September. UGA always comes back. Tech always goes back. Fact of life Chrissy. You’re a Tech fan. My condolences.

Is this your version of increased focus on GT? You still waited a lot of days to post again. Where is the urgency to keep us informed and post regularly about GT sports? I know you love GT, I love GT. But let’s get someone to write the blog who has the commitment to post more – and give insights about the football team. Yeah, Tech gear is interesting, but you haven’t provided us any insights on the football team…. and it’s ALMOST HERE!!! I will do this again….. please devote more time to this blog or allow someone else to write the blog…. Plus… you never address even the good comments… Oh well.

GTFan,
The AJC.com producers want “fan” blogs to be more “fan” oriented across all sports now. This blog isn’t meant to compete or overlap with the actual beat blog.

Thanks for reading.

In the state of Georgia, UGA fans outnumber GT fans more than 10 – 1. There are only +/- 60,000 GT grads living in the state. UGA is in the top 5 in licensing income from merchandise sales. LSU is up there too. Aside from the GT bookstore, you will always find more red & black that gold & white in virtually any retail store. No reason to get upset about it, it is what it is.

I, too went to a store in North Georgia and found mountains of UGA fan items and nothing for us Tech fans. I asked the store manager and she phoned her boss. The boss said, “Georgia Tech people know who they are. They need no tricked up symbols to prove themselves.”

If, in the next 8 years, Tech wins 82 games, finishes in the top 10 six times (including #2, #3), wins their division 3 times, wins the conference championship 2 times, plays in 3 BCS bowl games (wins 2 BCS bowl games), goes 6-2 overall in bowl games, and goes 7-1 against your in-state rival, I guarantee you’ll find more GT gear on the shelves. Some might even make it outside the perimeter.

Kohls carries Gt stuff. More uga stuff than gt but they do carry it. And it does make sense from a business standpoint. To the morons who rag in gt about the fan base and then say we have 10-1 fans. Well there you have it. That’s why you sell out your games. Because every redneck in the state roots for ga. It’s a larger student pop on top of that and easier to graduate. GT does have some pathetic fans who could care less about the athletic programs and that hurts. How one can go to university and then not care about the football program is beyond me.

I would like to see a count of how many people run around with Georgia garb on that are not Georgia grads. I think that point is somewhat made here. You get some Hank Williams type running around a Target and he wants to look educated but thinks the toothless look, much in need of a haircut, facial hair and dirty fingernails might pass easier in a Dawg hat than a Tech 1400 SAT type hat. This good old boy has not summised the school stands for something besides football, and according to the last SAT test showing a 45 point drop in Georgia there might be a larger demand this year than ever.

Why would you expect to see gear for civilized teams when you live in the sticks? No respecting GT fan would be found way out in Cumming.

Joking aside, it is even harder o find gear for smaller schools. Even though Clemson & Furman get a lot of students from Georgia, it’s a pain trying to find a lot of selection of either.

Having worked in Sports Marketing for years (and being a fan of neither team) I can tell you without hesitation that the reason you aren’t finding Tech gear is because it simply hasn’t sold well over the last 10 years. I’m hardly ever approached with marketing deals targeting Tech. National retailers know this and choose their markets that way. Add this to the fact that UGA is a Nike school (they promote their schools nationally and leverage their entrance into larger retail outlets) and GA Tech’s deal is with Russell Athletic…a brand that has a tough time getting in a lot of chains anyway. With success and good marketing, the brand can grow, but as of now, it’s pretty localized to Midtown Atlanta. Sorry.

Allow me to explain something that most people won’t understand. Every GA Tech instructor expects and allocates 5 hrs of study/practice/work per day. At 4 classes, that makes 20 hrs of work per day and roughly 4+ hrs for class. In other words, most Tech students can’t find time to sleep, much less going out to watch people play catch. Or twitter around in these blogs…

Like SEAL training, very few make it, and those who do have time for very little else.

Several people above got this right: There is no market for GT gear. Why? Mainly the numbers — there are more of everybody else (anybody else!) than there are Tech “fans.” Pure and simple, the store manager doesn’t want to get caught with merchandise he can’t sell. And, too — you rarely see a Tech fan with much more than a ball cap or maybe a windbreaker on that says “GT.” Tech people are just not that much into buying fan gear. All this is the reason you don’t see more of Tech items in the local newspapers.

I have noticed this problem for years. I have realized that there is nothing we can do about it except win. A colleague of mine moved to Middle Georgia. He went to a Tech game with me and bought his 10-year old daughter a Tech t-shirt. She ended up being the only one at her school who had one. We just need to take care of things on the field and everything else will work out. The kicker is that those in the state who are not UGA fans or Tech fans hate the Myopian Hush Puppies as much as we do.

And as I have always said, it’s not the quantity of the fan base, but the quality of it that counts.

On the other hand, he said, he can put a red G on anything and Georgie people will buy it. The profit margin on the Georgie stuff is very high because he can get away with it. I guess money management isn’t one of their strong suits.

It is dissapointing to go to an Atlanta area store and not find near the selection of GT gear verses UGA gear, but what is worse is what SunTrust has been doing for the past three years. They have a special promotion for anyone opening an account whereby the customer receives free UGA checks, a UGA cooler and other UGA promo items. I asked a branch manager about a similar offer for GT fans. He looked at me like I was from Mars. After 25 years as a customer of SunTrust I am now banking elsewhere.

There are plenty of places to buy GT stuff, especially online. It is up to the Tech fans to show up at the games and buy the gear. Most retailers are only interested in Green not what are in their stores. I hate UGA but if I owned a store I would sure take advantage of it. Heck, GT is more than willing to expand the stadium to make more $ off of Clemson, Auburn, FSU, and UGA fans that fill up the North end zone.

Let´s play football then we will have someting to talk about. That said, I am a life long Ga fan and alumi but pull for GT on all saturdays except the last one in November. I have gone into Wallmarts in the middle Ga. area and seen only Fla. and AU. merchandise. Needless to say I voiced my opion and NEVER went back inside. I also would like to say I never go inside a Target (a French owned store) after they refused to help the Katrina area people with requests for toilet paper and soap products or any aide at all. Their reply was that they had only one designated charity and that was the Gay and Lesiban World wide Awareness. No other coment needed. Meenwhile lets play some football.By the way AL. Tallcarl – I am no friend of Target, but the facts are Target is a US company based in Minneapolis and the company contributed $1.5 million to the American Red Cross for hurricane victims, and was “offering real estate for command centers for rescue efforts in Louisiana as well as looking for real estate available in Alabama and Mississippi. Target also expedited large-scale shipments of “food, water and bug spray” to the affected areas.

Wal-mart did even more contributing $17 million in direct aid to storm victims, and an additional $4 million in cash to the Salvation Army for Katrina relief efforts through the Walton Family Foundation.

I know it is fashionable to bash these companies but they, and others, do a lot of good. BTW, the bit about the Gay and Lesbian World Wide Awareness, has been dismissed as an urban legend, probably started at UGAG. (http://www.snopes.com/politics/military/target.asp)

Re: 2009 Sugarbowl – who played in it? If it was one of thsoe SEC wannabes, I didn’t take note of it.

Re: Food stamps – I assume a lot of them get bought with the tax money I pay every month and have paid every month without exception since graduating from Georgia Tech in 1968. There is no telling how many dawgs I have fed over the past 41 years. For that, I apologize, but once I pay the taxes, their use is out of my control.

First of all I will say I am a UGA fan… But I managed a retail store in Cumming for 4 years that carried an equal amount of UGA products and GT products (by the way store management does not have any control over what products are carried in the store those decisions are made by people in corporate offices). The UGA products always sold out quickly and the GT products always sold slowly and then about half of it ended up in the clearance section. I am sure there are areas where GT products would sell better than UGA products but Cumming is dominated by UGA fans. But Target probably did miss out on sales by not carrying atleast some GT products.

All these commits by UGA fans just proves to us GT fans that ya’ll are already a little bit scared about this year! It does not bother me that stores like Wal-Mart, Target & Kroger sell UGA stuff…they have too. It has to be out for these UGA fans to drool over & buy. With us GT fans, we know where to shop for our merchandise, our stores have a little bit more class than the ones mentioned! It would be nice though of the stores were not so one sided, but then again it shows the mentality of the sore owners. Kohl’s here in Kennesaw does sell Tech wear, but you really have to look for it. I have been saying for years that the media & this newspaper in particular is very biased when it comes to college football. This newspaper will always favor UGA over GT even thought GT is a local Atlanta team. We will just have to wait & see what happens this year football fans. Go Yellow Jackets!!
