Great Day to be a Yellow Jacket!

You know, fellow Tech fans, there are some days when you just have to relax and enjoy the warm, sweet embrace of success while savoring the just rewards of pulling for the “Good Guys”…

Today … is one of those special days.

Lets take a quick inventory of what makes today so great.

First and most noteworthy is Derrick Favors signing his official letter of intent to be a Yellow Jacket.  Favors is the Scout.com #1 ranked basketball recruit in the country.  That’s right…in the country!  At 6-9 and 220 lbs he’s the type of recruit who can do it all and can instantly have an impact on a struggling basketball program.  Think Kenny Anderson and Stephon Marbury level recruit here…a starter from day one on campus and a difference maker.  He may be the most highly regarded recruit in the history of the program.  Not only was he the MVP of the much heralded McDonald’s All American game but he’s also the winner of the coveted Naismith Award…presented to the best highschool basketball player in the nation.

So basically…the best basketball recruit in the nation, and a Georgia native at that, selected Georgia Tech over Georgia.

Second…the baseball Jackets took a big steps towards a Big Three Sweep, last night, when they traveled to Foley Field in Athens and upended the mutts 11-6 on their own home turf.  I would be amiss if I neglected to mention that UGA was ranked #1 and GT #10 when this defeat was delivered.  Does it get any better than traveling to your hated rival’s home field and knocking them off when they are ranked #1?

Some of you might be scratching your head and asking what a “Big Three Sweep” is.

Let me explain…

The “Big Three” in college sports is widely considered to be football, basketball, and baseball.  Sure…GT fans want to beat UGA in any sport when we compete, but the Big Three are paramount and where most of the bragging rights are earned for the next 365 days.

Paul Johnson’s football squad got the ball rolling when they traveled to Sanford and Son Stadium and used a 26 point third quarter to stun the Dawgs 45-42.  UGA’s preseason #1 ranking wasn’t worth the paper it was printed on when Roddy Jones and Jonathan Dwyer were running wild through and around the mutt secondary.

Wait a sec…I think I just saw Roddy Jones running through the neighborhood.   A bunch of my UGA neighbors appeared to be chasing him but they were slowed down by all these supremely ugly bulldog statues.  You know the ones I am talking about.  They’re made out of cement and always seems to have red sweaters or Gs painted on them.  If those guys want to catch Roddy they’ll need to drop those leashes and move a little faster.  I just don’t have the heart to tell them that it won’t do much good.

On the hoops front, Paul Hewitt and his team prevailed 67-62 after erasing a 10 point half time deficit with a 15 point second half spanking of the Dawgs.  As bad as the hoops Jackets were this season, they were still better than the squad UGA brought onto the hardwood.

So right now..considering the Big Three…the Jackets are ahead based on 45-42, 67-62, and 11-6.

When the baseball Jackets win the meeting in Turner Field on May 12th, the domination will be complete!

A nice little “Plus One” to tag onto Tech’s current run of success would be the women hoops team’s 57-42 domination of the Lady Dawgs.   I was fortunate enough to attend that game with my four year old daughter and we had a blast.  I encourage every dad (or mom) with a daughter to take their girls to a women’s hoops game.  We have a fabulous coach and a team on the rise.  We can expect more wins from the Lady Jackets in the future.

In closing, bear with me while I wallow in the sweet taste of success…

45-42

67-62

11-6

57-42

THWG!

GO JACKETS!

Wow! What a fund raising team we’ve got at Tech! Our alumni don’t contribute enough money nor buy enough season tickets, so our marketing department decided to make up for it by price gouging the UGA fans for the Georgia game. Once again we are gonna be carried by Georgia Football.

I hope we can round up at least a thousand people to watch the game this Saturday. By the way, history doesn’t favor the option attack after year one in the modern era. So we have two guys who would be fourth string in Athens at WR? Plus a bunch of walk-ons? Don’t look now but I think the only passing we’re gonna see is the pitch and shuttle variety.

I think CPJ needs to drop some random drug tests…some of the guys are chanting “National Champs” at practices. Looks like our boys are going the Joe Hamilton route…why does our campus have to be the highest in crack head per capita ratio? We are helluva engineers, we should be able to engineer athletes without drugs and class skipping, let alone a helluva remedial program.

Oh and did I just wet my bed tonight looking thru the recruiting magazines at all of those big studs we (the Leghumpers) are getting to sign with us. Too bad many of them are overrated and overhyped so that stupid SEC/Dawg fans will plunk down our trailer payment a Rivals subscription. But wellll guess I AM a dummy. Maybe next week our neighbors cow will let me close to her again. Till then it’s just me and these recruiting mags

The website has declined to post my comments four times; are we only allowed to post positive comments regarding UGA?

I will try again using more than one post; I appoligize in advance for the multiple posts.

Apparently, we are only allowed to post positive comments regarding UGA.

My first 5 attempts to post and few honest and realistic observations were blocked.

It will not be long before the UGA faithful begin with the standard insults, skewed records and boring comments.

The constantly negative posts by UGA fans simply verify they are concerned. Considering the fact that many of the UGA fans think GT is an EASY win on the schedule; it must really hurt when GT gets the “W” in any sport. The informed UGA fans realize that Florida has the exact same opinion of the UGA football team that UGA has of the GT football team………and it puts a little pressure on the inflated opinion they have regarding the UGA football team. UGA typically beats the numerous soft teams on the schedule and wins 50% of the time against decent/good teams; they win <10% of the time against the really good/great teams. The more realistic UGA fans are sincerely concerned (well justified) because they realize the GT football and GT basketball teams are on the rise and will be tough to play for the next several years.

The future of the GT Football, GT Basketball and GT Baseball Programs are very BRIGHT and it seems like a significant percentage of DAWG nation is starting to get a little concerned!

Go GT!

For the record, the comments I attempted to post were fair, interesting and somewhat thought provoking. They were VERY mild compared to some of the completely negative comments I have read from some/many of the GT bashers on these blogs.

I was simply trying to state that the GT Football, GT Basketball and GT Baseball programs are improving and some of the UGA fans seem to be taking notice (showing signs that they are a little concerned).

The GT vs. UGA rivarly will be better and more interesting if both programs find a way to stay in the Top 25 in these three sports!

Go GT!

An honest question: how exactly is GT’s basketball team on the rise when you still have Paul Hewitt as your coach?

Excellent Point DawgGirl32 – I agree. We will never be truly on the rise until CPH is gone…even if Favors gets us to the Sweet 16 all by himself. I just hope Hewitt doesn’t make Favors worse.

Very solid basketball recruiting class even without Favors. We have an absolutely stellar freshman class with Favors on board. Add these players to the young talented players already at GT and our future looks good. The 2008 players will be better now that they have gained the much needed experience they needed. Coach PH has many positive attributes and is simply not getting fair treatment from many of the GT fans and various bloggers. We would have had a completely different team in 2008 if Young and Crittenton had stayed in school. Give him a break. He represents GT well, has great positive attitude, high character and his players have great relationships with him (even after they graduate or go to the NBA).
