You know, fellow Tech fans, there are some days when you just have to relax and enjoy the warm, sweet embrace of success while savoring the just rewards of pulling for the “Good Guys”…
Today … is one of those special days.
Lets take a quick inventory of what makes today so great.
First and most noteworthy is Derrick Favors signing his official letter of intent to be a Yellow Jacket. Favors is the Scout.com #1 ranked basketball recruit in the country. That’s right…in the country! At 6-9 and 220 lbs he’s the type of recruit who can do it all and can instantly have an impact on a struggling basketball program. Think Kenny Anderson and Stephon Marbury level recruit here…a starter from day one on campus and a difference maker. He may be the most highly regarded recruit in the history of the program. Not only was he the MVP of the much heralded McDonald’s All American game but he’s also the winner of the coveted Naismith Award…presented to the best highschool basketball player in the nation.
So basically…the best basketball recruit in the nation, and a Georgia native at that, selected Georgia Tech over Georgia.
Second…the baseball Jackets took a big steps towards a Big Three Sweep, last night, when they traveled to Foley Field in Athens and upended the mutts 11-6 on their own home turf. I would be amiss if I neglected to mention that UGA was ranked #1 and GT #10 when this defeat was delivered. Does it get any better than traveling to your hated rival’s home field and knocking them off when they are ranked #1?
Some of you might be scratching your head and asking what a “Big Three Sweep” is.
Let me explain…
The “Big Three” in college sports is widely considered to be football, basketball, and baseball. Sure…GT fans want to beat UGA in any sport when we compete, but the Big Three are paramount and where most of the bragging rights are earned for the next 365 days.
Paul Johnson’s football squad got the ball rolling when they traveled to Sanford and Son Stadium and used a 26 point third quarter to stun the Dawgs 45-42. UGA’s preseason #1 ranking wasn’t worth the paper it was printed on when Roddy Jones and Jonathan Dwyer were running wild through and around the mutt secondary.
Wait a sec…I think I just saw Roddy Jones running through the neighborhood. A bunch of my UGA neighbors appeared to be chasing him but they were slowed down by all these supremely ugly bulldog statues. You know the ones I am talking about. They’re made out of cement and always seems to have red sweaters or Gs painted on them. If those guys want to catch Roddy they’ll need to drop those leashes and move a little faster. I just don’t have the heart to tell them that it won’t do much good.
On the hoops front, Paul Hewitt and his team prevailed 67-62 after erasing a 10 point half time deficit with a 15 point second half spanking of the Dawgs. As bad as the hoops Jackets were this season, they were still better than the squad UGA brought onto the hardwood.
So right now..considering the Big Three…the Jackets are ahead based on 45-42, 67-62, and 11-6.
When the baseball Jackets win the meeting in Turner Field on May 12th, the domination will be complete!
A nice little “Plus One” to tag onto Tech’s current run of success would be the women hoops team’s 57-42 domination of the Lady Dawgs. I was fortunate enough to attend that game with my four year old daughter and we had a blast. I encourage every dad (or mom) with a daughter to take their girls to a women’s hoops game. We have a fabulous coach and a team on the rise. We can expect more wins from the Lady Jackets in the future.
In closing, bear with me while I wallow in the sweet taste of success…
