Lady Jackets Tip off Against Iowa

I was lounging by the pool at Disney’s Coronado Springs resort when I got the word that the men’s hoops team had fallen to Florida State.  Looking at the numbers it appears like Clinch vs Douglas came down to the bitter end…a situation that hasn’t favored the Jackets much this season.  I take solace in the fact that the Noles were able to knock UNC out of the championship game.  At least the rest of the ACC wasn’t subjected to another Duke vs UNC media lovefest.  I can only take so much of that each year…

Coach Hewitt and the hoops underclassmen now enter a much anticipated off season.  The team and the coaches have to be aware of the expectations coming up in the 2009-10 season once Derrick Favors and the other signees join the fold.  The Jackets must be competitive and must reach the post season next year…or every last shred of Hewitt’s capital from the 2004 San Antonio run will have been spent.

The women’s hoops team will tip off against Iowa at 9:30pm EST…in Iowa City.   It stinks that the Lady Jackets have to travel across the country, following a 21-9 season with some big wins mixed in.  But that’s what happens when you lose in the first round of the ACC tourney to #12 seeded Clemson.

Tech last played Iowa in 2007, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, and prevailed 76-57.   I wouldn’t expect the Lady Jackets to be rattled by having to play on the road against a lower seeded opponent…on their home court.  However, Coach Joseph’s squad will be playing without Alex Montgomery.  Montgomery was injured at the end of the previous Clemson game.

That effectively leaves Tech without their leading scorer and rebounder…a loss that cannot be overlooked.

Someone will have to step up for the Lady Jackets to prevail tonight.

With my wife camped out in front of the TV watching Desperate Housewives, I think I’ll be tuning into ESPN2 here shortly…

And no…before someone asks…I haven’t missed the fact that the Tech baseball team is 16-2 and ranked #3 in the nation.

I fully intend to focus on the “beesballers” here shortly.  They will be facing a very good UGA squad in Atlanta on March 25th at 7:00pm EST.   UGA has been ranked as high as #1 this season and the three game series between the Jackets and Mutts will be for some pretty big bragging rights as both teams look to be major players in the NCAAs this coming summer.
