Slow Food Atlanta and Georgia Organics are helping sponsor one of both groups’ most popular events of the year: The fourth annual Field of Greens at Whippoorwill Hollow Farm in Covington on Sunday, October 4 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Whippoorwill farmers Andy and Hilda Byrd (Hilda has been very sick, and needs your thoughts and prayers) are hosts again this year.
Over 50 vendors, restaurants and chefs will participate, from Woodfire Grill’s (and “Top Chef” contender) Kevin Gillespie to Kevin Rathbun of Rathbun’s. Tastings from each restaurant (a confirmed-so-far-list is below) are from noon until 3 p.m., when the Three Not-So-Little-Pigs contest gets underway.
New this year, the cooking contest pits Jay Swift of 4th & Swift, Kevin Gillespie and Dave Larkworthy of 5 Seasons Brewing against each other for a three-hour pit-show, where the chefs will roast Heritage pigs from Thompson Farm, Gum Creek Farms, and Riverview Farms, respectively. Chef Ron Eyester of Rosebud will prepare some piggy-friendly sides.
There will be an expert panel of judges to determine a winner, and a “peoples’ choice award.” In addition, “green” exhibits and vendors will be on hand, as well as art projects and goat milking for the kids (no pun intended). Adults: $15 for the day; kids under 12 are free. All proceeds benefit Slow Food Atlanta for local farm initiatives.
