What about the “Ted Roof effect”?

It will most likely be felt next year.

But it could make some things interesting this year — three weeks away from signing day.

One name to watch is Trey Johnson, the Under Armour All-American linebacker who is committed to Ohio State.

Johnson played at Central Gwinnett, the same high school as Roof. And, if you remember, that formed the bond of their friendship which caused Auburn (when Roof was defensive coordinator there in 2011) to be the first school to offer Johnson, and then for Johnson later to commit to the Tigers.

What about other schools? Nkemdiche flirted with the idea of checking out other schools, such as Alabama and Florida, but ultimately settled on Ole Miss and LSU. “I don’t want to get it all mixed up with other schools in there.”

Ole Miss, where his older brother Denzel Nkemdiche is a star linebacker, is the frontrunner for the 5-star prospect. “Yes, it would be real hard for me not to go to Ole Miss; that’s a family thing,” Nkemdiche said last week. “It would be real hard not to do that, real hard.”

It was, after all, an all-star game, where kids are thrown together for only a few days. In these games, the offenses are always at a disadvantage, and everything is pretty unorganized. Think of it on the same level of a “pickup” basketball game.

UGA officials confirmed on Friday that 13 of its recruits have enrolled early in college.

The Bulldogs, which have 30 commitments for 2013, originally had 17 recruits that intended to start class on Monday for the spring semester. However, only 13 were cleared through admissions. The others will have to wait until May.

UGA needed to hit the magic number of 10 early enrollees circumvent the SEC’s new over-signing rules on a 25-man annual limit on class size. Under the rules, 10 of this year’s recruits will be “back-counted” toward the 2012 scholarship numbers, permitting the Bulldogs to sign 25 in February.

With 13 total enrolling early, 10 of those will count toward last year, and the other three will go toward this year’s numbers.

The last admittance of the group was John Atkins, a defensive tackle from Virginia’s Hargrave prep school.

On Thursday, Atkins told the AJC that he was approved by the NCAA Clearinghouse after his coach discovered that one of his grades had been …

LAKE BUENA VISTA, FLA. — Not much has changed over the last month involving recruiting with Robert Nkemdiche, the nation’s undisputed No. 1 overall prospect.

For starters, Ole Miss is the still the clubhouse leader for the 6-foot-5, 284-pound defensive end from Grayson High School.

“Yes, it would be real hard for me not to go to Ole Miss; that’s a family thing,” Nkemdiche said on Wednesday, referring to his older brother Denzel Nkemdiche playing linebacker for the Rebels.

“It would be real hard not to do that, real hard.”

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

The main competition for Ole Miss is LSU.

Contrary to published reports, Nkemdiche said he has yet to pin down dates for official visits with either co-leader.

Georgia will have only one player pick a hat on national TV during an all-star game.

It’s Trey Johnson, the linebacker from Central Gwinnett High School.

The 6-foot-1, 220-pounder will announce his college decision on ESPN during the Under Armour All-America game at 5 p.m. Friday. Here’s Johnson on his finalists:

Ohio State: “I like the atmosphere up there, and I understand they need linebackers.”

Florida: “I like the defensive scheme they have, and how good their defense was this year with Will Muschamp.”

Tennessee: “They brought in the same defensive scheme that Auburn had, which is the same scheme my high school ran, so I feel like I fit into it well.”

Most people consider it “automatic” for Johnson to select Ohio State because that’s the only college that he toured on an official visit. What is Johnson’s response to that? “I made a ton of official visits. I took three trips to Florida. I’ve been …

After arriving at the Army All-America Bowl, Robinson told Rivals that he is no longer committed to Clemson.

It’s the second time that Robinson has de-committed from the Tigers. In between, he’s also switched to Florida, and later backed off that pledge.

“I didn’t know who it was, at first,” Barber told the AJC. “Coach Malzahn said he had nothing to do with the old coaching staff at Auburn. He said if he had been there, I would’ve definitely had an offer before the season. (Malzahn) felt like I was one of the best running backs he’s watched this year.
Around 100 high school juniors will be on display for the RisingSeniors.com Bowl, which will be played at 1 p.m. Monday at Grady High School. Tickets are $20 for the all-star game that will also be broadcasted on ESPN3.com.

Here’s a look at the top five prospects in the game:

Deshaun Watson, quarterback, Gainesville: The 6-foot-4, 200-pounder has looked like the state’s No. 1 prospect in practices. Watson has prototypical size, he possesses outstanding composure, he’s a running threat, and he can throw on the run with velocity. Watson has been just about perfect on short to intermediate throws in the cold and rainy weather. “He’s as gifted as anybody I’ve seen,” said Blessed Trinity coach Tim McFarlin, the East team’s offensive coordinator. Watson nearly holds all of the state’s major passing records, and he led Gainesville to its first state championship earlier this month. …

Two of UGA’s football recruits who expected to enroll early will now have to wait until May to join the Bulldogs.

Defensive tackle John Atkins and outside linebacker Leonard Floyd, who both attend Virginia’s Hargrave Military prep school, both have to finish up a little academic work before they can enroll at UGA. They will not be finished in time to start classes with the Bulldogs on Jan. 7.

“I was kind of upset about it at first,” Atkins told the AJC on Wednesday. “But I’ve kind of gotten over it because there’s nothing we can do about it. I’m keeping my head up, and going to keep doing the things I was doing at Hargrave.”

UGA has at least 17 commitments from high school, prep school or junior college who said that they planned to enroll early. After the change of plans with Atkins and Floyd, the Bulldogs are down to 15.

The magic number for UGA is 10 early enrollees, because that’s the maximum amount that …

A rarely-used SEC document may have helped Alabama land the nation’s No. 1-ranked offensive tackle out of prep school.

On Tuesday, Brandon Hill of Virginia’s Hargrave Military prep school announced that he was flipping from Ole Miss to Alabama.

It was under unique circumstances:

Ole Miss was ordered to stop recruiting Hill by its compliance office after it was revealed he had signed an SEC financial aid agreement with Alabama earlier this month, according to the Clarion-Ledger’s Hugh Kellenberger — and that was when Hill was still committed to Ole Miss.

The website also reported that Hill may have not realized what he was doing when he signed off on the papers.

Why do high school football stars enroll early in college?

Mainly, it’s to get a headstart on competing for a starting position.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

QB Brice Ramsey has his reasons for graduating from Camden County High School this month so he could enroll at UGA for the start of the spring semester on Jan. 7. Ramsey will be joined at UGA by his high school teammate, DB JJ Green, who is also committed to the Bulldogs.

“It was for academic and football advantages,” Ramsey told the AJC. “You get to come in and play with the team, along with make the transition to college without having it all piled onto you in July and August.”

Ramsey is one of 17 high school, prep school, or junior college prospects committed to UGA that have said they plan to begin college classes in two weeks. The Bulldogs are only counting on 10, as that’s the maximum number that can be “back-counted” to last year’s …

Pretend you’re sitting on Santa’s lap.

If there’s one prospect that could wish for … for your favorite college football team, who would it be?

Post the prospect’s name and college team below, i.e. Robert Nkemdiche for Ole Miss. Or for Alabama, LSU, Clemson or whomever.

Just to make things interesting, we’ll only allow Santa wishes for uncommitted prospects, even though some of the committed prospects will surely waver over the next five weeks.

If you’re UGA, who do you put atop your wishlist?

Some would think the top priority would be 5-star LT Laremy Tunsil. That would give UGA Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall as tailbacks, with Tunsil and John Theus at tackles for the next few years. Some would ask Santa for 5-star DT Montravius Adams with the Bulldogs being wiped out on defense next year due to graduation and early NFL departures. Or there’s RB Alvin Kamara.

If you’re Georgia Tech, this class could be full already but the Yellow Jackets will likely add one or two more …
