Vonn Bell: 5-star safety sets up visits to Alabama, Tennessee and Ohio State

5-star safety Vonn Bell put his recruiting on hold until after his senior season at Ridgeland High School.

Ridgeland’s season ended with a loss to Sandy Creek in Saturday’s Class AAAA state championship, and Bell has set up his official visits to his three finalists.

Bell will go to Ohio State on Jan. 11, Alabama on Jan. 18 and Tennessee on Jan. 25, his coach told the AJC.

The AJC Super 11 selection grew up a fan of Tennessee.

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer attended Bell’s game last Saturday at the Georgia Dome.

Some bad news for UGA

UGA got some bad recruiting news on Saturday.

Tramel Terry, one of the team’s top commitments for 2013, suffered a serious knee injury on the first play of Saturday’s Shrine Bowl all-star game between the top high school football players in South Carolina and North Carolina.

Terry, the RB-WR from Goose Creek (S.C.) High School, may have torn his ACL, according to ESPN’s Miller Safrit.

The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Terry is an early high school graduate and will enroll at UGA next month, but his status for spring practice is unknown due to rehabilitation from the injury. Terry was expected to contribute immediately as a backup running back and slot wide receiver.

It was heart-breaking news for Terry, who had twice committed to UGA and decided a few weeks ago that he would go ahead and stick with …

One thing that makes college football recruiting so entertaining to follow is that it’s always full of surprises. They’re never-ending.

Reuben Foster, the 5-star linebacker who is being targeted by UGA, turned some heads when he said that a good daycare program and good babysitters would affect his college decision, reported ESPN.com’s Kipp Adams (click for story).

Foster, who de-committed from Auburn last week, has a 3-year old daughter named A’Ziya Blackmon. In trying to be a good father, Foster said his daughter’s care and concerns will impact his college decision:

“The school I pick has to have a good daycare program and good babysitters in case she wants to spend the night with me and I have football,” Foster told ESPN. “They coaches have to have a good bond with her too. My little girl has to like them and she knows …

There’s also Walton High School’s Tyren Jones, who is committed to Alabama, but his senior season – and his team’s championship hopes — ended abruptly after a knee injury.

The 5-foot-10, 195-pound Kamara is another one in the pipeline of prospects out of Norcross, the Gwinnett County powerhouse.

“He can just do so many things,” Norcross coach Keith Maloof said. “He can catch the ball out of the backfield and had a 65-yard scoring reception (in the semifinals). He threw a touchdown pass (in the quarterfinals) … The kid can do just …

AP All-America team loaded with talent from Georgia

How much talent is there in the state of Georgia?

The AP released its All-America teams this week. There were six players from Georgia on them, and not one of them signed with UGA or Georgia Tech out of high school.

Not one — although Jarvis Jones of Carver-Columbus High School later transferred from USC to UGA.

What about the other five?

  • Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama, Westlake High School: Signed with Alabama over Auburn, South Carolina and Rutgers. No offer from UGA or Georgia Tech.
  • David Yankey, OT, Stanford, Centennial High School: He claimed early offers from both UGA and Georgia Tech, but it’s unclear how heavily either school recruited him. Yankey was serious about academics, and ended up picking Stanford over his other finalists of Duke, Wake Forest and South Carolina.
  • Kevin Minter, LB, LSU, Peachtree Ridge: Minter grew up a Georgia Tech fan, and that was the school where he attended his …

UGA’s Tray Matthews on Reuben Foster, Shaq Wiggins, and Mark Richt’s mansion

If Reuben Foster makes an official visit to UGA next month as expected, the Bulldogs will have something big in their favor.

One of Foster’s closest friends, Tray Matthews, will likely be his UGA player host during the January recruiting trip. And Matthews is the main reason that Foster is considering the Bulldogs.

This weekend, Matthews was one of around 20 prospects to make an official visit to UGA. The safety from Newnan High School is an early enrollee and will be a student at Georgia next month – making him eligible to host recruits.

“I heard that Reuben is supposed to making an official visit, I’m supposed to be his host, and I’m going to show him around,” Matthews told the AJC. “I will be there on Jan. 6, so whenever he takes his official visit, I will be his host.”

One of UGA’s former recruits will be playing for the archrival Florida Gators.

“It was because Florida’s faithfulness, and them being here with me throughout the whole process, even when I was committed to Georgia,” Brown told the AJC. “They’ve been with me since day one. They were the most faithful.”

UGA and Brown had a tumultuous recruiting relationship. He originally committed to the Bulldogs in August, but began to waiver after Brown said Florida’s coaches let him know that another recruit (5-star OL Laremy Tunsil) talked to UGA’s coaches and said Brown might be playing offensive guard there. (Note: Tunsil is being recruited by UGA to play …

The 6-foot-5, 310-pound Johnson is one of Georgia’s top remaining priorities. He is a former standout at Banneker High School and ranked as the nation’s No. 2 prospect out of junior college by 247sports. Johnson has only taken recruiting trips to Oklahoma and Georgia, but has another visit scheduled for Missouri next month.

“I don’t know exactly when I’m going to commit,” Johnson said. “But whenever it feels right, I’m going to go ahead and do it.”

Earlier this week, Johnson underwent knee surgery for a torn ACL and MCL. He hopes to play next season, but has a redshirt season available just in case he isn’t …
