The 5-foot-10, 160-pounder from Sandy Creek High School picked the Bulldogs among a dozen offers, including Tennessee, Michigan, Ohio State, Wake Forest and Ole Miss.

“It felt right; it’s the place for me,” Wiggins told the AJC.

Alabama’s Nick Saban has his eyes on UGA’s top football recruit for 2013.

The coach of the BCS champions recently made a personal appearance to let QB Brice Ramsey of Camden County High School know that he’s a priority for the Crimson Tide.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Ramsey has been committed to UGA since last summer, since before the start of his junior year. Alabama, along with UGA, Florida, Florida State, Clemson and Notre Dame, had actually offered Ramsey as a sophomore.

Saban is aware that Ramsey is pledged to UGA but isn’t fazed.

“Coach Saban talked to me a while, and then talked to our principal for a while,” Camden County coach Jeff Herron told the AJC. “Then [Alabama] wanted Brice to call over the weekend so they could make the formal scholarship offer from the University of Alabama. I …

Remember all that talk about a UGA “mystery football recruit” that never happened?

It’s probably going to happen now after a gut-wrenching turn of events for UGA over the last week.

On signing day, the Bulldogs went 2 for 9 on targets that held UGA scholarship papers – and could’ve signed with them. However, the devastating news arrived a couple of days later when three members of last year’s “Dream Team” recruiting class were dismissed for team violations (DB Nick Marshall, DB Chris Sanders, and WR Sanford Seay).

All of sudden, UGA has at least seven scholarships to fill – if it chooses – by this summer.

Expect UGA to sign one by then, maybe more. The top candidate would be a junior-college prospect somewhere in …

Mike Bobo reportedly played a pivotal role in reeling home UGA’s most highly-publicized recruit a day after signing day.

Josh Harvey-Clemons, the 5-star linebacker from Lowndes, committed to UGA in front of a national TV audience at 9 a.m. Wednesday but didn’t turn in his paperwork until around 24 hours later. The delay caused a brief heart attack among UGA fans.

Harvey-Clemons had to get the approval – and signature – of his grandfather, Woodrow Clemons, who is also his legal guardian. Both of Josh’s parents are deceased.

Grandpa had nothing against UGA, the story goes, he just wanted Josh to go to Florida because of convenience and thought it would be a safer commute for everyone. Grandpa liked FSU also but felt the two-lane roads to FSU weren’t as safe as the 100-mile drive on I-75 from Valdosta to Gainesville.
Even after a little help from Josh Harvey-Clemons’ grandpa, UGA’s record-breaking streak in recruiting appears to be over.

The Bulldogs are the nation’s only team to finish in the top 10 of the Rivals’ top 10 team rankings every year since 2002. Until this year.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

What about this year? After Harvey-Clemons turned in his paperwork on Thursday, UGA rocketed from No. 19 overall to No. 11 – one spot away. Is that Harvey-Clemons really that good? Good enough to move an entire team up eight spots? Yes, he’s good but not that good. The jump also had to do with Rivals recalculating its rankings with the overnight addition of late signees from colleges across the nation.

“It can’t last forever,” Rivals’ Mike Farrell …

You can read extensive coverage of Harvey-Clemons, how everything went down, and UGA’s reaction in this blog by the AJC Chip Towers. (Click on story link)

Now let’s get back to the Big Picture for UGA with some of the recruiting experts:

What did it mean for Georgia for Josh Harvey-Clemons to finally sign with them a day later?

Scout.com’s Chad Simmons: “It caps it off … I guess the cherry on top today with some drama. Yesterday, it seemed like they were going to get off to a good start at 9 o’clock in the morning [when Harvey-Clemons committed on ESPNU] – and I guess they kind of did with the commitment. But until the LOI is signed, nothing is official, as we all know now. This really caps it off well for Georgia. I’m sure they wish they …

With all the hoopla surrounding his decision on where he would play college football next season, Georgia or Vanderbilt, Tucker’s Joshua Dawson relied on two of the three things that have been a constant in his life: his faith and his family.

“It was the hardest decision I’ve ever made,” Dawson said Wednesday morning, minutes after deciding to flip his longtime commitment from Vanderbilt to the Bulldogs. “Both are great schools. Both recruited me hard.

“I’ve been asking God and waiting on him to tell me where to go,” said the 6-foot-5, 230-pounder, sporting a crisp new Georgia baseball cap. “As soon as He gave me the answer, I told my family and they left it up to me.”

Not even Dawson’s coach, Franklin Stephens, the third constant in his life, knew for sure until he laid Dawson’s letter-of-intent from Georgia on the table in the Tucker auditorium, shortly before the signing ceremony at the school.

SIGNED

John Atkins, DT, 6-3, 315, Thomson
Comment: Committed to Georgia last summer over Auburn, Florida and Georgia Tech. … Very athletic and plays goalie on high school’s soccer team.
Quotable: “Atkins is another enormous lineman with the ability to use his power to control the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. [He] is also a standout center in basketball and, incredibly enough, stars at goalie for his soccer team, a credit to his overall athleticism. While Atkins showed the ability to play guard at the next level in the Under Armour All-America game, his skill-set should fit nicely on defense, where he can play anywhere on the three-man front.” — ESPN’s Kipp Adams

Collin Barber, P, 6-2, 190, Cartersville
Comment: Averaged 45.6 yards per punt and also handled kickoff duties, booting 90 percent into the end zone. … Earned his first offer at UGA summer camp and committed to the Bulldogs within minutes.
Quotable: “Coach Richt was sitting in …

UPDATED at 9:32 a.m. on Wednesday: JaQuay Williams commits to Auburn

After covering college football recruiting all these years, I should’ve known it was too good to be true.

Some mutual friends of JaQuay Williams reached out to me and said the state’s No. 1 prospect at WR wanted to talk.

In the last few weeks, JaQuay had been bombarded with phone calls from college head coaches, college assistant coaches, friends, neighbors, and reporters from Rivals, Scout, 247Sports, ESPN and me — as he wrestled with the idea of sticking with his commitment to Auburn or flipping to UGA.

JaQuay had dodged many calls from coaches and nearly all of them from the media. But here it was Tuesday, one day before signing day, and JaQuay was finally read to break his silence. I think it’s safe to assume that I was chosen because he was going to flip to UGA.

We arranged to meet at a “secret location” – his training facility near downtown Atlanta. I was actually early for once, arriving …

Brandon Greene told the AJC on Monday afternoon that he still plans to sign a football scholarship with Alabama.

However, UGA still hasn’t given up hopes of changing his mind before Wednesday’s signing day.

The 6-foot-6, 295-pound offensive lineman from Cedar Grove High School confirmed that UGA has sent him a letter-of-intent. Greene said he also got one from Alabama, and that’s where he plans to sign.

There’s a lot of speculation surrounding Greene, who is ranked the state’s No. 1 prospect at OL by some, and with good reason: Greene made a surprise visit to UGA last month, reportedly angering Alabama coach Nick Saban.

Even to add more suspense to the recruiting drama, Mark Richt and his entourage of three UGA assistants went to Cedar Grove to see Greene last Thursday. …

UGA LB target Markuss Eligwe has decided to postpone signing his college scholarship papers for a few days.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound linebacker from Stone Mountain High School has been committed to Florida State since last spring. He took an official visit to UGA last month. Eligwe also took a recruiting trip to Cal last week – which is why Eligwe is postponing.

“Cal is a great place and I had a great visit,” Eligwe told the AJC. “I was expecting good things, and it blew me away truthfully. So I’m going to give myself another few days to think about it.”

Rather than sign on Wednesday, Eligwe said it was likely he will wait until Monday.

How much of a contender will Miami be to UGA and the other finalists for Josh Harvey-Clemons?

The 6-foot-5, 200-pound linebacker from Lowndes High School will announce his highly-anticipated decision at 9:05 a.m. Wednesday on national TV. Harvey-Clemons is the state’s No. 1-ranked prospect, according to ESPN.

What about Miami? For the record, they are co-leaders with UGA, Florida and FSU. But the Hurricanes may have some catching up to do if you listen to Woodrow Clemons, the grandfather and legal guardian of the 5-star prospect.

Clemons has ranked the recruiting trips to UGA, Florida and FSU as an “8” on a scale of 1-10. What about this weekend’s visit to Miami? “Overall, I’d probably give them a 7, well a 6 or a 7.”

You know those rumors about longtime Auburn WR commit JaQuay Williams flipping to UGA?

They could shoot to the moon on Thursday.

UGA coach Mark Richt is expected to visit Sandy Creek High School on Thursday to speak with Williams, who is ranked as the state’s No. 1 prospect at WR.

“Honestly, all of this has kind of surprised me; I didn’t think Georgia would still be in it,” Sandy Creek coach Chip Walker told the AJC.

Georgia got involved very late with Williams, who committed to Auburn over Ohio State last summer. UGA only offered a few months ago and convinced him to take an official visit last weekend.

Some of the mystery surrounding why perhaps the state’s top uncommitted prospect didn’t go on his official visit to UGA has been revealed.

Dalvin Tomlinson, the AJC Super 11 defensive end from Henry County High School, didn’t visit UGA on Monday or Tuesday as previously scheduled. The Bulldogs are being considered by Tomlinson, along with rumored frontrunners Georgia Tech and Alabama.

“I talked with Dalvin and he had something that came up with his family,” Henry County coach Mike Rozier told the AJC. “He said he talked with [UGA assistant Bryan McClendon] on Saturday morning and let him know. It was a personal issue having to deal with his family.”

Will Dalvin reschedule his official visit to UGA? “I talked with both Dalvin and Coach McClendon, and they didn’t know yet.”

Does UGA still want Tomlinson? “I’m sure …

Josh Harvey-Clemons still has two official visits left, but his grandfather is predicting “a photo finish” between UGA and Florida.

Harvey-Clemons is a 6-foot-5, 200-pound linebacker from Lowndes High School who may be the state’s top uncommitted prospect. He made an unofficial visit to UGA over the weekend.

“It’s going to be a photo finish between Florida and Georgia, as I told Coach Bobo before we left,” said Harvey-Clemons’ grandfather, Woodrow Clemons, told the AJC.

“The visit to Georgia went well, really well. They wanted a commitment for us before we left. And we stood firm. We’re not going to commit until Feb. 1.”

That’s because JHC has two official visits remaining: to Florida State on Jan. 20 and Louisville on Jan. 27. This weekend’s trip to UGA was his first since traveling to Florida last month.

James Franklin vs. Todd Grantham, Round 2?

Vanderbilt’s head coach and UGA’s defensive coordinator are going head-to-head in a recruiting battle over one of the state’s top prospects, Tucker High School defensive end Josh Dawson.

If you remember, Franklin and Grantham got into a heated confrontation after this season’s Vanderbilt-Georgia game.

Back to Dawson: The 6-foot-5, 229-pounder has been committed to Vanderbilt since last summer. This weekend, Dawson took an official visit to UGA. Technically, the Georgia assistant in charge of recruiting Dawson is Rodney Garner but Grantham has gotten heavily involved within the last few weeks.

In case you missed it on late Friday night, another UGA RB target committed to South Carolina. Click here to read the full story. Did Gurley committing to UGA affect how RB Mike Davis was considering the Bulldogs? He said “no.” Maybe, maybe not, but I say likely. Did UGA still want Davis after landing Gurley? On the surface, it seems like UGA only wanted to take two RBs in this class, and Keith Marshall and Todd Gurley filled that void. However, this is a very unusual year for UGA from the standpoint of having so many scholarships open (between 8-10) this late, around two weeks before National Signing Day. At this point, many colleges start simply taking the best overall athlete left on the board, Had Davis really wanted to go to UGA, my guess is that they would’ve found a spot for him.

Does anybody remember another highly-touted RB that UGA signed out of North Carolina years ago? I think the …

Todd Gurley, the 4-star RB from Tarboro, N.C., committed to UGA over Clemson on Friday.

“I just came here to tell you where I will be taking my talents to next year, and that will be the University of Georgia … Go Dawgs,” Gurley said.

The 6-foot, 210-pounder is commitment No. 17 for UGA’s 2012 recruiting class. He is the second at RB, joining fellow North Carolinian Keith Marshall, the 5-star from Raleigh, N.C. Marshall is ranked as the nation’s No. 1 RB by Scout.com and enrolled in college early, starting classes at UGA this week.

Gurley is a consensus top 15 RB in the country.

“Todd Gurley ran track for Team USA in Europe last summer and when you put those letters across your chest, you’re elite,” said Rusty Mansell, National Recruiting Analyst for 247sports. “You’re talking about a kid who will be in the range of 220 and 225 pounds as a freshman. He ran for 235 yards …
