Dalvin Tomlinson, AJC Super 11 DE, rates his visit to Georgia Tech as ‘8 or 9′

AJC Super 11 defensive end Dalvin Tomlinson of Henry County High School gave high marks to his recruiting trip to Georgia Tech this weekend.

When asked to rate the visit on a scale of 1-10, Tomlinson said, “I’d say an 8 or 9. It probably would’ve been a 10 if I had gotten up there on Friday. But the Saturday experience was a great experience.”

The 6-foot-3, 270-pounder, who is one of the state’s Top 5 uncommitted prospects, said he was unable to make it on Friday because of wrestling practice at school (he’s a two-time state champion in the heavyweight division) and he was going to watch Eagles Landing Christian Academy in football’s playoff semifinals (wasn’t able to go after all).

Tomlinson was the big man on campus this weekend at Georgia Tech, which also welcomed QB Dennis Andrews of Tallahassee, Fla., and Allatoona High School RB …

Will UGA try to go after Georgia's No. 1 RB? Mike Davis did a back flip after scoring on this play (AJC)

Will UGA try to go after Georgia's No. 1 RB? Mike Davis did a back flip after scoring on this play (AJC)

Will UGA try to recruit the RB who some say is No. 1 in Georgia?

Stephenson High School’s Mike Davis abruptly de-committed to the Florida Gators on Sunday night – nearly a year after committing to the SEC school.

“Things happened; there was a misunderstanding with the Florida coaches,” Davis told the AJC. “I can’t comment on what went wrong. It just wasn’t meant to be. Some things happened, and I don’t want to comment on what happened.”

Should UGA try to recruit Mikey?

  • Yes, UGA needs RB’s like people need oxygen
  • Let’s wait to see what Marshall & Gurley do

The 5-foot-9, 200-pound Davis seemed stoic when talking about the shocking development. “I’m not feeling any emotions about it. It’s over with [Florida].”

Davis, also said this on Twitter, which may or may not have to do with Florida:

“It’s funny when …

Robert Nkemdiche: UGA in the running for the nation’s No-1 ranked football prospect (UPDATED)

Breaking: Recruiting drama! Georgia’s top basketball prospect changes his mind and signs only hours before midnight deadline (click here)

***

They aren’t part of his top five, but UGA still has a spot in the sweepstakes for the No. 1-ranked junior in the country, Robert Ndkemiche of Grayson High School.

The 6-foot-5, 270-pound defensive end made a rare unofficial visit last weekend, traveling to UGA with a couple of teammates to watch the Auburn game. The only other trip that Nkemdiche has made this fall was to rumored frontunner Alabama for the LSU game.

Despite the Atlanta suburb of Grayson being located only 35 miles from UGA, the Bulldogs haven’t been able to crack Nkemdiche’s top five, which consists of Alabama, LSU, Florida, Oregon and Southern Cal.

However, his coach told the AJC on Tuesday night to not count the Bulldogs out.

Recruiting drama! Shaq Goodwin signs hours before midnight deadline

How about a little recruiting drama on the last day of basketball’s early signing period?

Facing a midnight deadline to the period, Southwest DeKalb High School power forward Shaq Goodwin went ahead and signed a letter-of-intent with Memphis.

The 6-foot-8, 240-pound Goodwin, who is ranked among the nation’s top 25 overall prospects, committed to Memphis last week with the intention of signing in April’s late period. On Wednesday, Goodwin decided to go ahead and sign rather than look at his other suitors, which were UCLA, UGA, Florida and Arizona.

“That’s where my heart was,” Goodwin said.

“The recruitment of William Shaquille Goodwin is over; welcome to the Tiger Nation!” his mother told the AJC. “We talked at length again last night and … he really didn’t want to visit anywhere else.”

  • Meanwhile, another one of the nation’s top 25 prospects, Miller Grove power forward Tony Parker, will not sign by the end of the …

Surprise! UGA gains ground with 5-star DE Jordan Jenkins after visit — “too close to call”

  • BREAKING NEWS: Florida QB who some call the “next Tim Tebow” commits to UGA (go here for story)

UGA is now a serious contender for AJC Super 11 DE Jordan Jenkins after his official visit with the Bulldogs this past weekend (AJC)

Jordan Jenkins, the 5-star defensive end from Harris County High School, liked his official visit to UGA so much that the Bulldogs may be sneaking up to join his longtime frontrunners, Alabama and Florida.

It was some surprising good news for UGA, which had been given up as all but dead in the fierce recruiting battle for the 6-foot-3, 250-pounder who is considered one of the nation’s top overall athletes. Jenkins nearly canceled his official visit to UGA on two separate occasions before finally making the recruiting trip this past weekend.

UGA’s chances for the AJC Super 11 selection who is ranked as the state’s No.1 prospect by at least one recruiting publication have dramatically improved.

“Jordan told somebody that Alabama and Florida are …

Stephenson, the high school which may have had most talent-loaded roster the state of Georgia has ever seen, was eliminated in the first round of the state playoffs.

Stephenson, which has 11 seniors committed to D1 schools and could add several more before February’s signing day, lost to Lowdnes 7-0 in the Class AAAAA playoffs on Saturday.

It was a heartbreaking end for Stephenson (9-2), which got a bad draw in the first round after losing to ML King 50-49 last week when UGA-bound WR Blake Tibbs returned a kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown with 16 seconds left in regulation. The loss knocked Stephenson down to a No. 2 playoff seed, where it had to face an underachieving but always dangerous Lowndes squad.

The state of Georgia may never see a star-studded roster like Stephenson, which was led by AJC …

Will it be Georgia Tech or UGA for Robert Carter?

He’s the 6-foot-9, 250-pound power forward from Shiloh High School who is ranked among the nation’s top 25 overall basketball prospects.

Carter is scheduled to announce his college decision at 5 p.m. Thursday at Stats Restaurant. Carter is reportedly torn between the two in-state schools, Georgia Tech and UGA. He took official visits within the last month to both schools, along with Florida. Don’t count out the Gators in the chase for Carter.

Georgia Tech has a few things in its favor. When Carter made his recruiting trip with the Yellow Jackets on Oct. 22, he arranged it where he would be visiting the campus at the same time as Georgia Tech’s two signees, North Gwinnett guard Chris Bolden and North Clayton swingman Marcus Hunt. They all got to be good friends while playing basketball on the AAU circuit.

It was no surprise on Tuesday when one recruiting service came out with its rankings for the nation’s top high school juniors, and Robert Nkemdiche was at the very top of the list.

The 6-foot-5, 270-pound defensive end from Grayson High School was rated No. 1 in the country for the class of 2013 by 247sports. Nkemdiche has denied longtime rumors that he is a “secret commitment” to Alabama. His only unofficial visit this season was to last week’s game at Alabama. He is officially considering Florida and LSU, along with Alabama.

The bigger surprise was that another junior from Georgia was ranked No. 2 overall in the country – Troup County linebacker Reuben Foster, who is officially committed to Alabama but also still talking with UGA, Auburn and Florida.

“It was really a tough decision among the people that decided between Robert and Reuben,” said Rusty Mansell of …

Shaq Goodwin headed out of state to play college basketball (UPDATED)

UPDATE: Many of the media reports stating that Shaq Goodwin committed to Memphis were based on his tweet early Tuesday that said “#MemphisBound.” I did confirm it directly with Goodwin via text message that he did indeed commit to Memphis. However, Goodwin did NOT yet confirm if he will be signing with Memphis this week. There is speculation this afternoon that now he may wait. Please check back for updates.

Several of Stephenson High School’s top football prospects make cameo appearances in a rap video hyping up Friday’s matchup against M.L. King.

The pair of 9-0 undefeated teams will square off at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Hallford Stadium in a game which will also be broadcast live by CSS-TV Comcast Ch. 45.

Stephenson is a candidate to lead the nation this February with the number of seniors signing football scholarships with FBS schools with 11 currently, including AJC Super 11 defensive end Jarontay Jones (committed to Virginia Tech).

Back to the rap video: Linebacker Raphael Kirby steals the show with his swift dance moves. He committed to Miami last spring without ever visiting the ACC school but started looking at other schools at other schools after NCAA allegations swirled around the …
