While a lot of boys begin getting exposed to sports by their fathers from the moment they leave the hospital as newborns, Quinteze Williams didn’t get it until he was 10 years old.

That was the age that is father, Ellis, after finally getting his life settled properly, fought for and won custody of Quinteze and his younger sister. Immediately, Ellis set about the task of molding his son into a Division I-level football player.

But the road, particularly at the initial stages was rough for Quinteze. Though he was already well over 5 feet tall and almost always the biggest person on the field, football didn’t come naturally to him.

“I didn’t like football at all,” said Quinteze, who committed to Florida after his junior season at Sandy Creek. “All the running and hitting. When I first started playing, I didn’t like it at all, probably for the first three years of playing. I used to cry all the time.”

But Ellis wouldn’t let him quit. Instead, he …

Harvey-Clemons is a 6-foot-5, 200-pound linebacker from Lowndes High School who may be the state’s top uncommitted prospect. He made an unofficial visit to UGA over the weekend.

Did UGA get some good news about another top RB on Sunday?

Maybe so, maybe not. We’re not quite sure. But it could change again any minute. It’s that time of year again, the final stretch of recruiting where anything can and will happen before kids sign on the dotted line on February’s national signing day.

The top RB is Stephenson High School’s Mike Davis, who recently de-committed from Florida for undisclosed reasons after being pledged to the Gators for nearly a year. He was quickly offered by UGA and made an unofficial visit with the Bulldogs.
Stephenson High School RB Mike Davis liked Thursday’s recruiting trip to UGA so much that he plans to come back in January for an official visit.

When asked to rate Thursday’s trip on a scale of 1-10, Davis said, “I’d give it a 10. I was really impressed.
For the second year in a row, the No. 1-rated running back in the nation is headed to UGA.

Keith Marshall of Raleigh committed to UGA on Tuesday, picking the Bulldogs over Clemson, Florida and South Carolina.

The 5-foot-11, 190-pounder will enroll early at UGA, starting classes in January. He is expected to contribute immediately to the Bulldogs, which have been plagued with major problems and issues with their running backs.

“The first thing Keith Marshall does is give Georgia immediate depth at tailback,” said Rusty Mansell, National Recruiting Analyst for 247sports.com. “He also gives Georgia a game-changing running back, but depth is the biggest thing right now. Whether Isaiah Crowell is healthy or not, they had to add depth to the backfield.”

What can you expect from Marshall at UGA next season? He doesn’t have the same bulk or power as Crowell, but is a track guy who can score from anywhere on the field if he gets into open space.

(Lots of breaking news of Marshall: Please check at the bottom for the most current updates)

What if Keith Marshall does not pick UGA on Tuesday?

It would be a recruiting nightmare for the Bulldogs. Even the idea that the nation’s No. 1 RB is seriously considering alternatives ignites panic attacks among masses of UGA supporters.

Marshall is the “make-it-or-break” recruit for UGA’s 2012 class. The speedster from Raleigh, N.C., is the guy that the Bulldogs have to get. Why is that? Because of ongoing RB problems and an emergency-level lack of depth (we’re talking fire alarms, folks) at the place once proudly known as “Tailback U.”

From listening to some UGA fans, if Marshall doesn’t make the “expected” decision on Tuesday afternoon, the Bulldogs might as well forget about next season. It would be like another 0-2 start …

Will UGA try to recruit the RB who some say is No. 1 in Georgia?

Stephenson High School’s Mike Davis abruptly de-committed to the Florida Gators on Sunday night – nearly a year after committing to the SEC school.

“Things happened; there was a misunderstanding with the Florida coaches,” Davis told the AJC. “I can’t comment on what went wrong. It just wasn’t meant to be. Some things happened, and I don’t want to comment on what happened.”

The 5-foot-9, 200-pound Davis seemed stoic when talking about the shocking development. “I’m not feeling any emotions about it. It’s over with [Florida].”

Davis, also said this on Twitter, which may or may not have to do with Florida:

“It’s funny when you look a coach in the eye [and] see right through the B.S. [they] be [feeding] …

The 6-foot-5, 270-pound defensive end made a rare unofficial visit last weekend, traveling to UGA with a couple of teammates to watch the Auburn game. The only other trip that Nkemdiche has made this fall was to rumored frontunner Alabama for the LSU game.

Despite the Atlanta suburb of Grayson being located only 35 miles from UGA, the Bulldogs haven’t been able to crack Nkemdiche’s top five, which consists of Alabama, LSU, Florida, Oregon and Southern Cal.

However, his coach told the AJC on Tuesday night to not count the Bulldogs out.

How about a little recruiting drama on the last day of basketball’s early signing period?

Facing a midnight deadline to the period, Southwest DeKalb High School power forward Shaq Goodwin went ahead and signed a letter-of-intent with Memphis.

“That’s where my heart was,” Goodwin said.

“The recruitment of William Shaquille Goodwin is over; welcome to the Tiger Nation!” his mother told the AJC. “We talked at length again last night and … he really didn’t want to visit anywhere else.”

Jordan Jenkins, the 5-star defensive end from Harris County High School, liked his official visit to UGA so much that the Bulldogs may be sneaking up to join his longtime frontrunners, Alabama and Florida.

Stephenson, the high school which may have had most talent-loaded roster the state of Georgia has ever seen, was eliminated in the first round of the state playoffs.

Stephenson, which has 11 seniors committed to D1 schools and could add several more before February’s signing day, lost to Lowdnes 7-0 in the Class AAAAA playoffs on Saturday.

It was a heartbreaking end for Stephenson (9-2), which got a bad draw in the first round after losing to ML King 50-49 last week when UGA-bound WR Blake Tibbs returned a kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown with 16 seconds left in regulation. The loss knocked Stephenson down to a No. 2 playoff seed, where it had to face an underachieving but always dangerous Lowndes squad.

Will it be Georgia Tech or UGA for Robert Carter?

He’s the 6-foot-9, 250-pound power forward from Shiloh High School who is ranked among the nation’s top 25 overall basketball prospects.

Carter is scheduled to announce his college decision at 5 p.m. Thursday at Stats Restaurant. Carter is reportedly torn between the two in-state schools, Georgia Tech and UGA. He took official visits within the last month to both schools, along with Florida. Don’t count out the Gators in the chase for Carter.

Georgia Tech has a few things in its favor. When Carter made his recruiting trip with the Yellow Jackets on Oct. 22, he arranged it where he would be visiting the campus at the same time as Georgia Tech’s two signees, North Gwinnett guard Chris Bolden and North Clayton swingman Marcus Hunt.
Dalvin Tomlinson, the AJC Super 11 defensive end who is one of the state’s top uncommitted prospects, has decided on at least two of his five official visits.

And the first two winners are?

“I know I’m taking one to Alabama for sure, and most likely Indiana,” Tomlinson told the AJC. “The other ones, I have to think about.”

The 6-foot-3, 270-pounder is also being heavily recruited by Georgia Tech, UGA, Florida, Clemson and Stanford – and will decide between those schools for his final three recruiting trips. This season, Tomlinson has made unofficial visits to Georgia Tech (twice), UGA and Florida State.

“He has got a ‘poker face’ with his recruiting; he hasn’t made a decision yet and he’s weighing his options,” Henry County coach Mike Rozier said. “Academics are important to his recruiting because he’s got a 3.9 GPA with honors.”

Georgia Tech took its best shot at landing one of the state’s “Big Three” basketball prospects over the weekend.

Robert Carter, a 6-foot-9, 250-pound power forward from Shiloh High School, made an official visit to Georgia Tech over the weekend after taking a recruiting trip to UGA last week. Carter is one member of the “Big Three” — three Atlanta area seniors ranked among the nation’s top 25 overall prospects, a special group which also includes Southwest DeKalb’s Shaq Goodwin and Miller Grove’s Tony Parker.

When asked to rate his Georgia Tech trip on a scale of 1-10, Carter said, “I had a good time at Georgia Tech. I enjoyed spending time with the coaches and players, and I like the direction that coach [Brian Gregory] is taking the program. I don’t know if I could really rate it, though.” After pausing for a few seconds, Carter said, “I’d probably give it a 9.”

UGA coach Mark Richt offered an early football scholarship to Walton High School’s Brandon Kublanow, who is likely the state’s No. 1 junior prospect on the offensive line. UGA offered the 6-foot-3, 280-pound Kublanow at the center and offensive guard position.

“As soon as we got to Georgia on Saturday, they said Coach Richt wants to see you,” Kublanow told the AJC. “My mom and I talked to Coach Richt for about 45 minutes. At the end of the conversation, [Richt] said ‘you have an offer from us and we really want you to come here.’

“I was a little surprised. Some people had told me that I might be getting an offer, but I was still surprised. And I’m really excited about …

UGA’s top football recruit will visit Notre Dame.

John Theus, the 5-star offensive tackle from Jacksonville, confirmed that he will take a recruiting trip to Notre Dame for the Oct. 22 game against Southern Cal.

“They understand that I am committed and I have been honest with them about my commitment; They know I am going to Georgia as long as Coach [Mark Richt] is there,” Theus told Chad Simmons of Scout.com.

Theus committed to UGA at Dawg Night prospect camp in July. His older brother, Nathan Theus, is a freshman long snapper on scholarship with the Bulldogs.

There have been rumors swirling around Theus about Notre Dame and Florida since he pledged to UGA. Theus called Richt to inform him. “Coach Richt was happy that I called to tell him about the visit, and he was happy that he did not have to lose any sleep over me visiting them.”

Within the last month, UGA has …

Henry County defensive end Dalvin Tomlinson has Alabama and Georgia Tech as his co-leaders, followed by Florida, Clemson and Indiana. “You can put Georgia in there, too … and Stanford,” Henry County coach Mike Rozier said.

The 6-foot-3, 255-pounder earned rave reviews for his head-to-head performance last Friday against Sandy Creek defensive lineman Quinteze Williams, who is committed to Florida. Tomlinson started at offensive tackle and defensive end in the loss.

“Dalvin is having a really good season and he really handled No. 48 (Williams) from an offensive standpoint,” Rozier said. “No. 48 is a good player, but he wasn’t as much of a factor as he usually is that night. It wasn’t even close, but they won the game, and I’m sure that’s the most important thing for them.”

Jordan Jenkins, who is a candidate to be Georgia’s No. 1 overall college football prospect, may be close to the end of his recruiting journey.

The 6-foot-4, 250-pound defensive end from Harris County High School made an unofficial visit to Alabama last weekend, and is headed to Florida this Saturday. Alabama and Florida are the co-leaders for Jenkins, followed by Auburn, UGA and Tennessee.

“I think after this Florida visit, I think his announcement is nearing,” his father, Ronald Jenkins, told the AJC. “I anticipate it definitely before the end of the season, in my opinion, or right after the end of the season. I really think he’s getting closer to his decision.

“Next Saturday at Florida is going to go a long way in his decision process, even though February is a long ways away. The visit to Florida will help clear his head on a few things.”

Brice Ramsey, UGA’s quarterback of the future, can play a little kicker, too.

The junior quarterback from Camden County had one of the top 10 longest field goals in the history of Georgia high school football on Friday. Ramsey, who committed early to UGA, booted a 57-yarder in the 58-0 win over Bradwell Institute.

“He actually kicked one earlier that was 57 yards but was wide right,” Camden County coach Jeff Herron told the AJC. “He had plenty of distance on that one and he told me when he came off the field ‘You give me another chance, Coach, and I will make it.’

“Lo and behold, with two minutes at the end of the half, we got to the same location. It was fourth down and a mile. Brice got up there and drilled it. It hit the fence behind the goalpost. It had another 7-8 yards for sure.”

What about Brice at QB? On Friday, Ramsey completed 6 of 11 passes for 138 yards and …

One of the top uncommitted seniors in the state is AJC Super 11 member Josh Harvey-Clemons of Lowndes High School.

The 6-foot-5, 200-pounder will take official visits to UGA, Florida, LSU and Louisville. JHC is projected to play safety in college, but is also getting looks at outside linebacker.

“The dude is a freak … he’s the best I’ve played against in the last three years,” said Trent Thompson, quarterback of No. 1-ranked McEachern High School.

“I think he will play safety in college, if they don’t put him somewhere on offense. I don’t think he’s thick enough to play linebacker. Wherever he goes, he’s going to be outstanding.

“I still can’t believe the interception he had against me. He jumped so high, and kept getting higher and higher, and came down with it. The dude is a freak.”

Here’s McEachern coach Kyle …
