BREAKING: 8:50 a.m Thursday: Josh Harvey-Clemons’ letter of intent arrived at UGA this morning, according to UGA spokesperson Claude Felton.

Recruiting is considered to be “Soap Operas for Men” — and there’s a good one going on in Georgia.

Josh Harvey-Clemons, ranked the state’s No. 1 overall prospect by ESPN, committed to UGA on national TV but his grandfather – who is also his legal guardian – reportedly won’t sign off on the scholarship papers.

“Everyone has to sign, you know?” Josh’s uncle, Roy Hart, told the AJC around 3 p.m. Wednesday. “But he’s going to sign, from what I understand.”

Fair or unfairly, UGA caught some criticism for being “too late” to offer some of the state’s top football prospects this year.

The Bulldogs may be trying to counter that perception for next year’s class.

On Thursday, UGA recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner made a personal appearance at Dooly County High School, which is located 60 miles south of Macon. That’s a big deal when the Bulldogs still have to fill 10 or so scholarships for this year’s class.

Garner was there to make a verbal scholarship offer to Dooly County High School defensive tackle Montravius Adams, the 6-foot-4, 280-pounder who is rapidly emerging as one of the state’s top 10 prospects for 2013 after his dominating performances at last …

Ten of Georgia’s top football prospects are participating in Thursday’s Under Armour all-star game, and only two are uncommitted.

Chaz Elder, a defensive back from Banneker High School, will announce his decision between South Carolina and Georgia during the game, which begins at 8 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN.
Back to Elder: The 6-foot-2, 180-pounder Elder has listed South Carolina as his longtime frontunner, and the Gamecocks still appear to be the school to beat. However, Elder did take an official visit to Georgia last month.

What do you think about the No. 1 recruit of Georgia Tech’s 2012 class?

Now you can get a good look at English transplant who is causing such a stir in college football’s recruiting circles. We’re talking about Francis Kallon, the 6-foot-6, 250-pound defensive end from Central Gwinnett High School. He’s committed to Georgia Tech.

Kallon, who is ranked as a 4-star recruit by both Scout and ESPN, recently had a highlight video of his senior year – his only year of playing organized football – put on YouTube (see video at bottom).

Up until now, only college scouts and high school coaches had seen the video. What did they think? Central Gwinnett coach Todd Wofford paused before answering. “You wouldn’t believe it if I said it. I … don’t want to put that kind of pressure on him.”

Georgia Tech has offered one of the state’s top 2013 prospects at running backs.

Grayson High School junior Wayne Gallman said Georgia Tech is one of four early offers, along with Clemson, Auburn and Vanderbilt.

Jordan Jenkins, the 5-star defensive end from Harris County High School, liked his official visit to UGA so much that the Bulldogs may be sneaking up to join his longtime frontrunners, Alabama and Florida.

It was some surprising good news for UGA, which had been given up as all but dead in the fierce recruiting battle for the 6-foot-3, 250-pounder who is considered one of the nation’s top overall athletes.
Is Auburn in danger of losing the commitment of WR Jaquay Williams to UGA?

UGA is making a late charge for Williams, and offered a football scholarship last week to the 6-foot-3, 200-pounder from Sandy Creek High School. Williams is considered the state’s No. 1 prospect at wide receiver.

Williams, who committed to Auburn over Ohio State last summer, told the AJC he will make an unofficial visit to Georgia on Saturday – his first trip to Athens in two years. Part of the reason will be to hear out the sincerity of UGA’s interest, and the other part will be to watch Auburn play in person.

“I’m going to go up there, look around and check things out,” Williams told the AJC on Thursday night. “But I’m really locked in on Auburn right now. Something crazy, and I mean real crazy, would have to happen …

It was no surprise on Tuesday when one recruiting service came out with its rankings for the nation’s top high school juniors, and Robert Nkemdiche was at the very top of the list.

He is officially considering Florida and LSU, along with Alabama.

The bigger surprise was that another junior from Georgia was ranked No. 2 overall in the country – Troup County linebacker Reuben Foster, who is officially committed to Alabama but also still talking with UGA, Auburn and Florida.

How do you know which prospects are a top recruiting priority? By where a college head coach appears during his team’s off week.

Georgia Tech was off last weekend, and Paul Johnson spent a day at Central Gwinnett High School. He was there to see the No. 1 commitment of Georgia Tech’s 2012 recruiting class, defensive end Francis Kallon.

Johnson and recruiting coordinator Andy McCollum stopped by the high school early in the day to talk with Kallon’s coaches, then returned later in the evening to closely observe Kallon in Central Gwinnett’s loss to Grayson.

Alabama DB commit Geno Smith is planning an unofficial visit to archrival Auburn but it’s not why you think.

Yes, Auburn was the runner-up to Alabama for the AJC Super 11 DB’s commitment but his trip to Auburn would be to go see Alabama play. This year’s Iron Bowl will be played at Auburn on Nov. 26.

“Other than the Iron Bowl, I don’t plan on visiting any other schools than Alabama,” said Smith, who still hears from Auburn, UGA, LSU, Arkansas and Florida State on a regular basis.

Smith has kept an extremely low profile since committing, focusing on his senior season at St. Pius, which is 7-0 and ranked No. 2 in Georgia’s Class AAA. Smith stars on both sides of the ball for St. Pius, also playing tailback.

Smith has flourished under the incredibly high expectations that were put on him for his senior season. “I know the expectations are high, but I don’t really think about it that much because I’m confident …

Parks was so blown away by Holsey’s dominating presence that he went back to FSU and raved to his coaches about Holsey, who committed to Auburn. Evidently, FSU’s coaches liked what they heard because they are in now hot …

Kurt Freitag, one of the state’s top college football prospects at tight end, may be close to making his college decision.

The 6-foot-3, 245-pounder from Buford High School has made official visits to two of his three finalists, Alabama and Florida. He will decide later this week about scheduling a recruiting trip to Florida State.

Freitag took his official visit to Alabama for the Arkansas game. Freitag’s teammate at Buford, linebacker Dillon Lee, is committed to Alabama, while another – offensive lineman Vadal Alexander – has the Crimson Tide as a finalist, along with LSU and Auburn.

“Alabama made it perfectly clear how much they want and need Kurt to be part of the team and school; he left with a very good impression of fitting in,” his mother said.

Freitag saw Alabama play again last weekend during his official visit to Florida, which he also enjoyed.

Guess what kept Georgia Tech’s No. 1 football recruit from making an unofficial visit to archrival UGA last week?

This is a good story. Refreshing.

Francis Kallon, the star defensive end from England who is playing his first year of high school football, didn’t go to UGA last Saturday because he had to take the SAT.

What’s really interesting about that is that the 6-foot-6, 260-pounder has already has an outstanding SAT score of 1,530. But his parents, who wouldn’t allow Francis to play football unless he made straight A’s, want a better score.

“I think his parents think the higher he scores on the SAT, the more money he will get for his football scholarship — but he’s already getting a full scholarship,” Central Gwinnett High School coach Todd Wofford said with a laugh. “But hey, you have to admire how his parents stress academics.”

UGA is the latest …

It the first offer for Brandon Kublanow, the 6-foot-3, 290-pounder from Walton High School who is an early favorite to be the state’s No. 1 college prospect along the offensive line for 2013. Kublanow is a UGA fan and the Bulldogs could be the next to offer.

“The Finisher” earned his nickname after devastating and dominating blocking skills were caught on tape by Rivals and Scout at last month’s Corky Kell Classic at the Georgia Dome. Kublanow had 13 pancake blocks against Peachtree Ridge, including a couple where he fell on top of the defender as he was making the block and – to the amazement of scouts – stayed on top of the defender and shoved his helmet into the artificial turf, as if to make sure he got the message.

Brandon Morris, one of Georgia’s top college basketball prospects, took an official visit to UGA. Morris is a 6-foot-7 small forward from Miller Grove, the three-time defending Class AAAA state champions.

“He liked Georgia, but no … Brandon didn’t commit,” Miller Grove basketball coach Sharman White told the AJC. “I think he wants to take some more visits and research everything before he makes his college decision.”

UGA coach already has a pair of homegrown commitments for 2012 – Whitefield Academy’s Kenny Gaines and Milton’s Charles Mann. Fox hMark Foxas two more scholarships available, and is targeting Morris.

You’re a pretty big deal if you’re a high school kid and the head coach of the reigning BCS champion shows up at your football game the night before his own team’s season-opener.

Jordan Jenkins, the AJC Super 11 member who is a candidate to be Georgia’s No. 1-ranked prospect, is a pretty big deal.

On Friday night, Auburn coach Gene Chizik made a personal appearance at Harris County High School to observe the 6-foot-4, 250-pound Jenkins. Tennessee assistant Lance Thompson was also in the stands for the game.

Auburn has gained ground with Jenkins in recent weeks. Alabama and Florida are the frontrunners for Jenkins, while Auburn moved up and is now “battling it out with UGA for third.”

Jenkins likes Auburn because of the program’s success, its proximity to his home (only an hour from Harris County), and the friendships he has developed with the Auburn coaches …

John John Atkins committed to the Bulldogs on Friday morning. The 6-foot-4, 290-pounder from Thomson High School picked UGA over Georgia Tech, Auburn, Florida and Clemson. Thomson is located around 60 miles from Athens.

John John is recruit No. 13 for UGA’s 2012 college football recruiting class. He is the third defensive tackle to pledge to the Bulldogs, along with Jenkins County’s Jonathan Taylor and Georgia Military Junior College’s Jalen Fields.

“I don’t think John John has come close to realizing how good he can be,” said John Barnett, who retired as Thomson’s longtime defensive coordinator last season. “He has impressed college scouts with how quick he is for his size.

Lassiter High School safety Kene Orjiokie is the hottest college football prospect in Georgia.

The senior transfer from California landed his third football scholarship in five days on Wednesday night. N.C. State offered, following in the footsteps of Georgia Tech and Ole Miss a few days ago.

“I talked to N.C. State, and I’m very appreciative of the offer,” Orjioke told the AJC. “They asked me what position would I like to play, safety or linebacker? I told them I’ll play anywhere that helps the team win. Yes sir, I’m fine with any position.”

Which college will be next? UGA, Auburn, Tennessee, Clemson, Mississippi State and East Carolina have all expressed interest. Orjioke will be making an unofficial visit to Auburn on Saturday.

Could Florida be in danger of losing one of Georgia’s top running backs?

Stephenson High School’s Mike Davis, who committed early to the Gators, confirmed to the AJC that he plans to visit other schools but remains committed to Florida.

“I just want to take my visits with my teammates,” Davis explained. “There’s nothing there with me committing to another school. It’s just me going to have fun with my teammates while they are having fun. I want to enjoy the time with them because I know this might be my last time with them. Of course I’m committed to the Florida Gators. I’m not trying to go anywhere else.”

Which other schools may get visits from Davis? He isn’t ready to say. “I don’t know.” Davis had around 15 early offers when he committed to Florida last February over Alabama, South Carolina, Auburn, Tennessee, Georgia Tech and Penn State. What about UGA or Georgia Tech? “I haven’t heard anything …

Georgia Tech was the last college visit for “Big John” Atkins announces his decision on Friday morning.

The 6-foot-4, 290-pound defensive lineman from Thomson High School named UGA, Georgia Tech, Florida, Auburn and Clemson as his finalists.

Georgia Tech was the school that had the opportunity to make a last impression.

Big John made an unofficial visit to Georgia Tech on Saturday; the coaching staff was gone by the time he arrived, but he spent a few hours hanging out with some of the players.

“It went good; I like Georgia Tech because they are like a family,” Atkins told the AJC.

What about archrival UGA? “I’ve liked them ever since I was younger,” he said.

Georgia Tech and UGA appear to have inside position, along with Auburn, because Atkins has traveled to the campus of all three. He has never visited Florida and Clemson, but still says they are among …
