LB Kent Turene drops USC, will pick from UGA, Nebraska, Texas Tech

Georgia’s chances with an out-of-state recruit increased slightly over the weekend as Kent Turene, a three-star linebacker from Lauderdale Lakes, Fla., officially decommitted to Southern Cal.

“Yes, I decommitted to them,” Turene said shortly after his plane landed in Ft. Luaderdale Sunday night. “Now I just need to get home and evaluate everything.”

Turene’s pledge to the Trojans has been shaky for a while. In the last month he has visited Georgia, Nebraska and Texas Tech, the latter just this past weekend. After the trip to Lubbock, Turene decided to pull the plug on USC.

Turene (6-3, 225) raved about his official visit to UGA the weekend before last. He was a little less euphoric about Texas Tech, saying, “It was cool. I liked it.” But Turene still wasn’t willing to offer any hints as to which way he might be leaning, if any way at all.

Asked directly if Georgia had a chance to sign him on Wednesday, Turene said, “They have a great chance.”

Asked what the odds were he’d sign …

Ex-UGA recruit Zack Witchett may have Memphis scholarship offer

Ex-UGA recruit Zack Witchett, who had his football scholarship revoked by the Bulldogs earlier this month, may have an offer from Memphis.

Witchett is scheduled to make an official visit to Memphis this weekend and will likely be offered before he leaves campus, according to Booker T. Washington coach Stanley Pritchett. He is being recruited at wide receiver and defensive back.

“They know he is a D1 athlete and they are kind of glad he might fall to them,” Pritchett said. “The Memphis [assistant] said they were going to offer, that Zack had to meet with [Memphis coach] Larry Porter but he felt like it was a ‘done deal.’”

Georgia withdrew Witchett’s scholarship offer on Jan. 5 — less than a month away from signing day — due to undisclosed off-the-field issues. Pritchett said that Memphis asked about that particular situation. (Click here for the UGA details)

“They wanted to know what kind of ‘character guy’ he is,” Pritchett said. “I told Memphis that Zack is like your normal …

Michigan shows late interest in Chattahoochee QB Tim Byerly

Michigan expressed interest on Monday in Chattahoochee quarterback Tim Byerly.

Chattahoochee coach Terry Crowder recently sent film of his state championship quarterback to Michigan and a few other schools, hoping it would garner some attention.

When Crowder followed up with a call to Michigan on Monday, he got some surprising news. “They really liked him on film. Michigan said they had another quarterback visiting this week who felt like would commit to them. But if that did not happen, then they are going to really look at Timmy.”

The 6-foot, 210-pound Byerly is one of the state’s most overlooked college football prospects. He helped lead Chattahoochee to this past season’s Class AAAA championship, completing 170 of 249 passes for 2,664 yards and 30 touchdowns. He also rushed for 1,506 yards.

“Timmy was the best quarterback I saw this year,” Crowder said. “I just don’t understand why more of the big boys aren’t looking at him because he can really help someone out at …

THE TEN AT 10:

1. The departure of Georgia offensive line coach Stacy Searels for the same job at Texas is disappointing to players he has recruited to become Bulldogs. But apparently it is not a deal-breaker.

Dalton offensive lineman Watts Dantzler, one of the first recruits to give Searels the nod early last summer, said he remains “100 percent” committed to UGA, as are most of his fellow offensive line commitments, all with whom he has been in contact.

“You know, I think [Searels] had to make a decision that was best for him and I understand,” he said Wednesday night. “But I committed to the school, not to him, and I’m still committed. I’m looking forward to seeing who they’re going to hire.”

Dantzler is one of five O-line commitments the Bulldogs have for 2011. He said he has been in …

Stephon Tuitt drops Tech, switches back to Notre Dame

Stephon Tuitt has switched his commitment back to Notre Dame.

The five-star defensive end from Monroe Area High School, who flipped from the Fighting Irish in order to commit to Georgia Tech on Tuesday, confirmed to the AJC late Wednesday night that he flipped back to Notre Dame. Elapsed time on the de-commit/re-commit: About 30 hours.

“What a day!” Tuitt said.

Tuitt said he had a change of heart after Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly and several defensive coaches made an in-home visit Wednesday night.

“They just told the truth,” he said when asked what changed his mind. “They didn’t say anything negative about Georgia Tech or anything like that. They just told the truth about what Notre Dame could do for me and what I could do at Notre Dame..”

Tuitt said he “had a few questions I needed to get off my chest.” Asked what those questions were, he said, “just some little things and some big things. I had some questions about the class they have coming in and some about the …
