The latest Ken Griffey, known as Trey Griffey, has committed to play football for Arizona and new coach Rich Rodriguez.

Numerous media reports surfaced of the commitment Monday night and the younger Griffey, the son of the baseball great Ken Griffey Jr., confirmed it to the Orlando Sentinel.

“My parents said, ‘It’s up to you, you got to do what you want to do … what you feel is right,’” Griffey told the Sentinel. “I’m going to the University of Arizona. It doesn’t get any better than that.”

A 6-foot-2, 190-pound wide receiver, he caught 72 passes for 970 yards as a senior at Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando.

Lorenzo Mauldin finally did last week what he thought he was going to do more than a month ago. The defensive end from Atlanta’s Maynard Jackson signed a national letter-of-intent to play football on scholarship in college.

Only this LOI was not from South Carolina, as he expected it to be when he committed to the Gamecocks last July. Mauldin signed instead with Louisville. With a little luck and some more hard work, he’ll join the Cardinals for preseason practices in August.

“South Carolina was, you know, planning on me signing with them after prep school,” said Mauldin, a 6-foot-4, 240-pound senior. “I don’t believe they thought I would make the [qualifying test] score. It kind of made me feel like they were wishing for me to not make the score.

“[Louisville] Coach [Charlie] Strong had faith in me from the beginning. He said he …

With the sting of its NCAA Tournament first-round loss still fresh, the Georgia Bulldogs found a little relief by landing a fourth member for its 2011 recruiting class.

Nemanja Djurisic (pronounced neh-MON-juh jerr-REE-sic), a 6-foot-8, 230-pound power forward from South Kent, Conn., by way of Southeast Europe, committed to the Bulldogs late Sunday evening. He will sign with UGA when the national signing period begins in mid-April.

Djurisic chose Georgia over a laundry list of offers, including closest runners up N.C. State, Utah, Arizona State, Kansas State, Minnesota and Texas.

“I like him because he’s very sound and cerebral,” said Dave Telep, senior basketball recruiting analyst for ESPN.com. “He’s a tough and intelligent basketball player. He has a little Matt Howard in him.”

That is Parks’ primary position at Callaway High School. The Yellow Jackets offered him a scholarship to play quarterback for them early Wednesday morning.

“It elevates them a little bit knowing they want me to play quarterback,” said Parks, who is projected mostly to play tight end on the next level. “We run the option at my school, but not the triple option like they do. But I believe it’s something I could do.”

Listening to Kenyan Drake explain his commitment to Alabama Monday night was like hearing a Crimson Tide coach offer a recruiting pitch.

“In my eyes, you can’t get a better offer than Alabama,” said Drake, a 6-0, 188-pound running back from Hillgrove High in Powder Springs. “They offer you top-tier academics and top-tier athletics.
This is definitely not the way Dexter Moody thought his football career would turn out.

Moody, a four-star linebacker out of Emanuel County Institute in Twin City, was a much ballyhooed recruit when signed with Georgia in 2009. But pretty much nothing has gone right since then.

“Yes, I decommitted to them,” Turene said shortly after his plane landed in Ft. Luaderdale Sunday night. “Now I just need to get home and evaluate everything.”

Turene’s pledge to the Trojans has been shaky for a while. In the last month he has visited Georgia, Nebraska and Texas Tech, the latter just this past weekend. After the trip to Lubbock, Turene decided to pull the plug on USC.

Turene (6-3, 225) raved about his official visit to UGA the weekend before last. He was a little less euphoric about Texas Tech, saying, “It was cool. I liked it.” But Turene still wasn’t willing to offer any hints as to which way he might be leaning, if any way at all.

Asked directly if Georgia had a chance to sign him on Wednesday, Turene said, “They have a great chance.”

Ex-UGA recruit Zack Witchett, who had his football scholarship revoked by the Bulldogs earlier this month, may have an offer from Memphis.

Witchett is scheduled to make an official visit to Memphis this weekend and will likely be offered before he leaves campus, according to Booker T. Washington coach Stanley Pritchett. He is being recruited at wide receiver and defensive back.

“They know he is a D1 athlete and they are kind of glad he might fall to them,” Pritchett said. “The Memphis [assistant] said they were going to offer, that Zack had to meet with [Memphis coach] Larry Porter but he felt like it was a ‘done deal.’”

Georgia withdrew Witchett’s scholarship offer on Jan. 5 — less than a month away from signing day — due to undisclosed off-the-field issues. Pritchett said that Memphis asked about that particular situation. (Click here for the UGA details)

Michigan expressed interest on Monday in Chattahoochee quarterback Tim Byerly.

Chattahoochee coach Terry Crowder recently sent film of his state championship quarterback to Michigan and a few other schools, hoping it would garner some attention.

When Crowder followed up with a call to Michigan on Monday, he got some surprising news. “They really liked him on film. Michigan said they had another quarterback visiting this week who felt like would commit to them. But if that did not happen, then they are going to really look at Timmy.”

The 6-foot, 210-pound Byerly is one of the state’s most overlooked college football prospects. He helped lead Chattahoochee to this past season’s Class AAAA championship, completing 170 of 249 passes for 2,664 yards and 30 touchdowns. He also rushed for 1,506 yards.

Stephon Tuitt has switched his commitment back to Notre Dame.

The five-star defensive end from Monroe Area High School, who flipped from the Fighting Irish in order to commit to Georgia Tech on Tuesday, confirmed to the AJC late Wednesday night that he flipped back to Notre Dame. Elapsed time on the de-commit/re-commit: About 30 hours.

“What a day!” Tuitt said.

Tuitt said he had a change of heart after Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly and several defensive coaches made an in-home visit Wednesday night.

“They just told the truth,” he said when asked what changed his mind. “They didn’t say anything negative about Georgia Tech or anything like that. They just told the truth about what Notre Dame could do for me and what I could do at Notre Dame..”

Tuitt said he “had a few questions I needed to get off my chest.” Asked what those questions were, he said, “just some little things and some big things. I had some questions about the class they have coming in and some about the …

When Marcus Caffey committed to Purdue on January 2, he spoke joyfully and confidently about his choice. He was certain it was the place for him.

But Kentucky coach Joker Phillips kept working on him and, less than two weeks later, he broke through. Caffey, the No. 26 player in the state, switched his commitment from the Boilermakers to the Wildcats on Thursday.

“I feel like I’m pretty close to Coach Phillips and all the Kentucky coaches,” Grady’s star running back explained. “I’ve gotten to know them well during the recruiting process. Plus, a lot of guys from Atlanta go to Kentucky. It’s a place that feels more like Georgia, more like home.”

Caffey is the seventh Georgian to commit to the Wildcats and the fourth member of the AJC Fab 50. He joins M.L.
James Vaugthers and his family got word that David Shaw had been named Stanford’s new head coach only a couple of hours before boarding a plane Thursday to make his official visit to the school. But who Shaw hires as defensive coordinator is probably going to play an even more important role in whether Vaughters honors his commitment and signs with the Cardinal on national signing day.

Vaughters, an AJC Super 11 linebacker from Tucker and the No. 4-ranked player in the state, has been committed to Stanford since last June. But he said after coach Jim Harbaugh left to coach the San Francisco 49ers he may have to reconsider his decision depending on what happened to the coaching staff.

Shaw, Stanford’s offensive coordinator since Harbaugh has been there, was tabbed the new head coach on Thursday.

The 2011 AJC Fab 50 is out, and it might just be the strongest group of football players ever assembled on paper in this state.

Traditionally, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has at the beginning of each year produced a list of what we believe to be the best senior high school football players in the state. That’s not exactly what this is.

While most of the names you’ll find on this list certainly were fine high school players, that’s not why they’re included. This is intended to represent the 50 best “college football prospects” in the state. So it’s based as much on potential at the next level as much as it is high school production.

Leading the list was a trip of 5-star-rated recruits who remain undecided about their college choices. Carver-Columbus running back Isaiah Crowell gets the distinction of being the top prospect in the state. He’s …

Tyler Marcordes has no ties to Georgia Tech. He has no ties to Atlanta or the state of Georgia, for that matter. But when football recruiting put The Institute in his path, he fell hard for the Yellow Jackets.

The 6-foot-4, 231-pound athlete from Normal, Ill., committed to Georgia Tech right before Christmas. He’s No. 17 for the Class of 2011.

“I didn’t really know that much about them,” Marcordes said of the Jackets. “I watched them on TV before and I knew a little about the history of the football program. But when I got down there the first time, I just liked it right away. When they offered me, I decided to jump on it.”

In Marcordes, the Jackets got themselves a versatile athlete. He earned all-conference honors as both a quarterback and safety at Normal West High School. But at Tech he’s expected to play outside linebacker.

Usually Mama is the first to know everything. But not in Yvonne Sebastian’s case. Not this time anyway.

“I still don’t know,” Avery Walls‘ mother insisted just minutes before he was to announce his college choice in front of a small assembly at Eagles Landing Christian Academy Tuesday morning. “He was supposed to tell me at 7:30 this morning but he ended up rushing out the door to get an 8 o’clock final exam without telling me. I’m as eager as everybody else to find out where he’s going.”

Ms. Sebastian at least got a few minutes heads up. Walls emerged from his English exam — his last test as a graduating high school senior — and whispered his choice to her and ELCA head football coach Jonathan Gess. A few minutes later, after faking a reach for a Michigan cap and picking up and dropping an Oregon cap, Walls donned …

1. AJC Super 11 RB Isaiah Crowell, a 5-star prospect from Carver-Columbus, told Scout.com’s Chad Simmons that Georgia and Alabama are even after his visit to Athens this past weekend. The Crimson Tide held a slight edge previously. He also said he plans to visit on Dec. 11, which is the night of the Bulldogs’ Senior Gala event. He hasn’t decided if that will be an official visit or not, but the timing is certainly interesting either way. I’m supposed to talk to Crowell later this week so I’ll provide a full update once I do. In the meantime, here’s a link to Chad’s story.

2. Speaking of 5-star prospects, AJC Super 11 DE Ray Drew has been a popular man early in the contact period, which began Sunday. He told me Monday he hosted coaches from Clemson and Florida. Today he is scheduled to meet with Georgia and LSU representatives. Interestingly, Drew put out a notice that he would not accept any coaching visits during school hours. How’s that for unusual? So …

The Georgia high school football state playoffs begin tonight and that means some of the finest football talent in the state will be put to the test against each other.

I’m heading over to Snellville tonight to cover the Class AAAAA opener between Alpharetta and Brookwood in the “Channel 2 Sports Zone Friday Game of the Week” (7:30 p.m., Charter 126/Comcast 248; 1 a.m. WSB-2). That game is a perfect example of elite talent being pitted against each other early in the playoffs.

The No. 1-seeded Broncos (9-1) feature a couple of the best players in Gwinnett County. They are led by spectacular two-way star Andre Sims, a longtime Michigan State commitment. Sims starts at both split end and cornerback. And while his offensive numbers are down from last season when he led the county with 921 yards …

When you say Grady Grey Knights these days, the first name that probably comes to mind is Damian Swann, the AJC Super 11 defensive back who is attracting recruiting attention from all over.

But there is a new name emerging from the old Atlanta high school. Marcus Caffey, a 6-foot, 190-pound running back, leads the Grey Knights with 911 yards on 78 carries (11.7 ypc). He, too, is attracting recruiters to Grady by the dozens. And along with Swann, Caffey is a big reason Grady is 7-1 and ranked No. 9 in Class AAA.

It will probably come as no surprise that these two elite athletes are also close friends.

“I’ve known him since I was 4,” Caffey said of Swann. “He played on my first basketball team. We’ve been playing on the same teams ever since.”

Asked if he and Swann ever discussed attending the same college, Caffey said: “Damian told me if I go to Georgia, he’s going to Georgia.”

Swann, as has been well-documented for quite some time now, has been the subject of an intense …

1. Georgia Tech didn’t waste any time moving on after the de-commitment of Kyle Harris this week. Just a day after getting that news from the Pepperell offensive lineman, coach Paul Johnson was on the phone with East Paulding’s Taylor Gadbois extending an offer.

Gadbois, a 6-foot-7, 275-pound tackle, got the call Tuesday night. “Coach Johnson called and said they liked what they had seen and that they thought I could help them,” he said. “I told him that I was honored and I appreciate it.”

Tech is the best opportunity Gadbois has had so far. His previous offers have come from Illinois State, Indiana, Middle Tennessee State and Troy. Why, Gadbois was asked, hadn’t a prospect of his size playing on a good team not attracted more recruiting interest to this point?

“I definitely have to say because I didn’t play my junior …

“I heard the day after when we came back,” said Sims, a wide receiver and defensive back who has been committed to the Spartans since early this summer. “Coach [Dave] Warner called and told me about it. First he said they were calling to make sure I made it home safe. Then he told me Coach Dantonio had a heart attack.”

Sims could not have been more surprised. He saw Dantonio like most everybody else did: A fitter-than-usual 54-year-old who had energy enough to fuel an entire college football program.

The truth was, Dantonio had a blockage in one of the arteries to his heart. He …

Teams getting ready to play North Paulding know right off the bat they have to focus on stopping No. 32, AJC Super 11 wide receiver Chris Conley. But once they line up against the Wolfpack and see No. 30 lining up opposite Conley, they might think they’re seeing double.

They’re not. No. 30 is senior wide receiver Joey Eliezer, and his similarities to Conley go beyond their 6-foot-3, 185-pound frames.

Just ask Paulding County, which saw the duo combine for 241 receiving yards and four touchdowns in the season opener.

“If teams double-cover Chris that keeps me in single coverage and gives me a chance to make plays,” said Eliezer, who hit the Patriots for 129 yards and two touchdowns on four catches. “It’s kind of like pick your poison.”

Just the threat of these athletic receivers has proven effective for North Paulding. The Wolfpack (2-0) barely threw the ball in their second game of the season, a 51-3 win over Alexander this past Friday. They’ve outscored their first two …

Should Georgia make legacy prospects a recruiting priority?

Phillip Daniels thinks so. And that’s the core question surrounding the curious case that is the recruitment of his son, wide receiver prospect DaVaris Daniels of Vernon Hills, Ill.

Phillip Daniels is a Georgia letterman (1992-1995) and a defensive end about to enter his 15th season in the NFL (with the Washington Redskins). His son, by all accounts, is a pretty decent football prospect himself.

DaVaris Daniels, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound play-maker, gets a four-star rating from both Rivals and Scout, is the No. 90 prospect overall and the No. 15 receiver in the ESPNU 150 rankings, and has a pretty impressive offer sheet of about a dozen schools (only two below the Mason-Dixon line, for what that’s worth).

Last week I wrote about DaVaris Daniels abruptly canceling a press …

DaVaris Daniels’ recruitment is turning into quite a drama.

As I reported in this morning’s “Ten at 10,” the highly-touted wide receiver out of Vernon Hills, Ill., abruptly canceled a press conference he had scheduled for noon Tuesday. According to a Chicago Sun Times report, Daniels was expected to commit to Miami over Notre Dame at that time.

As you may also know, Daniels’ father is none other than UGA letterman and Georgia native Phillip Daniels, a longtime NFL player most recently with the Washington Redskins. Well, somebody claiming to be Daniels absolutely lambasted the author of the Sun Times article, calling it “a fabrication” and “a bunch of lies.” In particular, Daniels took exception to the story’s assertion that Daniels could not academically qualify for admission to Notre Dame, his first choice, which is why he was going to commit to Miami, his second choice.

Click on THIS LINK and you can see Daniels’ (alleged) comment in the comments section below the …

1. I’ve been somewhat surprised to see some of the negative reaction to Georgia’s latest commitment, OT Watts Dantzler of Dalton. While a lot of the negativity is coming from rival fans of the Bulldogs, it seems to be based mostly upon 30 seconds of video somebody posted on here showing Dantzler getting beat a couple of times in pass-protection drills during Georgia’s recent elite-prospect camp in Athens. Here’s the reality: Dantzler is 6-foot-7 (or 6-8, depending on whom you believe) and weighs 330 pounds. That’s breathing some rare air, size wise, for a 17-year-0ld. He had more than 30 scholarship offers from nearly every major program in the South and beyond, including Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, Notre Dame and Miami, among others. And while pass protection is the one area Dantzler needs to improve on most, he’s still a …
