Will Ja’Quay Williams consider Auburn again?

The family of Ja’Quay Williams likes Auburn’s hiring of Gus Malzahn.

But it’s unlikely that the star wide receiver will be signing with the Tigers again.

Williams committed to Texas A&M over UGA and South Carolina on Sunday after backing off his longtime pledge to Auburn a couple of weeks ago. The former Sandy Creek High School standout is attending prep school this semester, and he hopes to enroll at Texas A&M in January.

“I think that’s a smart move to hire Coach Malzahn,” said JaQuay’s uncle and legal guardian, Kevin Ofchus. “I think it makes you wonder why they let go of him in the first place. I guess that will be the big question, you know.

“It tells you that there’s a lot of dysfunction. One year, you get rid of both of your coordinators. The next year, you get your rid of your head coach and bring back your offensive coordinator again. One thing that you want — one thing that rock-solid programs have – is …

Auburn’s recruits from Georgia react to hiring of Guz Malzahn

Auburn’s football recruits from Georgia got the news about Tuesday’s hiring of Gus Malzahn. Most of them want to know more about or meet Malzahn, or see whom he is going to hire as defensive assistants before saying much more:

  • Carl Lawson, DE from Milton High School (ranked nation’s No. 2 overall prospect by ESPN): “Don’t have much information on him.”
  • AJ Jackson, TE from Lovejoy High School: “My coach told me, but I don’t really know who that guy is. I’ve never heard of him before, but I’m sure he’s good if Auburn hired him. They said he was the OC at Auburn a couple of years ago. It’s a good thing he’s been a coach at Auburn before.” The 6-foot-6 Jackson has scheduled an official visit to Mississippi State on Jan. 25, and will also take trips to Florida State and Ole Miss.
  • Jimmy Hutchinson, punter from Harrison High School: “I’m super excited about it. I know Auburn is heading in the right direction. I feel …

Will ex-UGA WR recuit Ky Priester get another look from the Bulldogs?

Every year, both UGA and Georgia Tech extend a last-minute scholarship offer to an in-state kid after another target goes elsewhere.

Kyrin Priester, who had a breakout senior season and is now considered by some to be the state’s top prospect at wide receiver, is a name to keep an eye on.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound speedster from Brookwood High School was actually committed to UGA for a few months, re-opened his recruiting, and is now pledged to NC State. However, that commitment is kind of shaky after NC State fired coach Tom O’Brien.

“I was kind of upset about it,” Preister told the AJC. “But I’m not going to do anything until I find out if my position coach gets fired. If he gets fired, then I’m not going to NC State.”

Priester quickly picked up an offer from Mississippi State on Monday and has many other colleges wanting to evaluate his senior highlight film, which …

Auburn loses another high-prized football recruit

Auburn has lost another high-prized commitment from Georgia.

Trey Johnson, a 4-star linebacker from Central Gwinnett High School, de-committed from Auburn on Tuesday, according to his coach.

“In talking with Trey and his dad, they feel like it’s time to de-commit because they don’t even know who Trey is committed to at Auburn (without a new coach hired),” Central Gwinnet coach Todd Wofford told the AJC.

“Trey wanted to be fair to himself, and to be fair to the schools that are recruiting him. It is two months away from signing day, and he’s not in a position where he can wait to see what coach Auburn may hire, what defense they may run, and things like that.

Johnson’s de-commitment doesn’t come as much of a surprise. Ever since Gene Chizik was frequently mentioned as being on the hotseat, Johnson had openly communicated with other colleges.

The 6-foot-2, 225-pounder went on an official visit this …

The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder from Sandy Creek High School took an official visit to UGA this weekend.

“Texas A&M, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi State are on the current list,” said Kevin Ofchus, his uncle and legal guardian. “And Auburn is still in the mix.”

“Like a lot of kids, we’re just waiting to see how things pan out with which specific coach it is (hired at Auburn). Until things get figured out over there, Ja’Quay needs to do his due diligence and research where he wants to go.”

Last February, Williams signed with Auburn after almost switching to UGA at the last minute.

However, Williams became a free agent again this year after not meeting NCAA academic …

House call: UGA picks up commitment No. 30 at Mark Richt’s digs

One of UGA’s top recruiting targets had some good news when he visited at Mark Richt’s house on late Saturday night.

Johnson, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound safety from Mississippi Gulf Coast junior college, picked UGA over Ole Miss, South Florida and Mississippi State. He is commitment No. 30 for UGA’s 2013 recruiting class.

“Coach Richt was very excited,” Johnson told the AJC. “He was happy and he hugged me a couple of times. His wife and his brother-in-law and his son … they were happy as well.”

Somewhere, UGA defensive coordinator Todd Grantham had to be happy, too. Johnson is expected to be an immediate contributor next year to a defense that will lose at least 8 out of 11 starters. Johnson graduates from junior college in December and will enroll at UGA in …

  • UGA is expecting Reuben Foster to make an unofficial visit for Saturday’s Georgia Tech game, which Foster confirmed to the AJC. The 4-star linebacker from LaGrange is committed to Auburn but still flirting with UGA. For the Bulldogs, it will be important that Foster does indeed appear at Saturday’s game, with his own team at Auburn (Ala.) High School in a playoff game on late Friday night.
  • Another Auburn commitment, WR Ja’Quay Williams is scheduled to take an official visit to UGA this weekend. Williams signed with Auburn over the Bulldogs after a fierce battle last year, but did not satisfy NCAA requirements and is spending this fall at prep school. Williams was the state’s No. 1 prospect at WR last year and is considered better than any of the …

Nkemdiche is the nation’s undisputed No. 1 prospect as a 6-foot-5, 284-pound defensive end from Grayson. He’s backed off his early commitment to Clemson, and now considering Ole Miss (where his older brother plays), among others.

DeVondre Seymour is a 6-5, 290-pound offensive tackle for North Gwinnett who is the adopted son of the NFL All-Pro for the Oakland Raiders. The younger Seymour claimed early offers from UGA, Alabama, Florida and South Carolina, among others, but has kept a low profile in the recruiting world over the last six months.

JaQuay Williams: Auburn WR commit to make official visits to UGA and Texas A&M

JaQuay Williams, the state’s No. 1 prospect at WR last year, will take official visits to UGA and Texas A&M over the next two weekends.

The 6-foot-4, 210-pounder from Sandy Creek High School signed with Auburn last February but fell just short of NCAA requirements. Williams is spending this fall at Virginia’s Fork Union prep school and is planning on enrolling at a four-year college in January.

Williams is still officially listed as an Auburn commitment, but – like many other recruits pledged to Tigers – still looking at other colleges due to speculation over Gene Chizik’s future at the SEC school. Auburn is 2-8, and the school president issued a statement that the football program will be evaluated after the season.

The highly-regarded defensive back from a California junior college will likely decide between Oregon State and Texas Tech in December.

Nelson is a native of Warner Robins and, he is ranked as the nation’s No. 2 DB out of the junior college ranks by 247sports.com.

“Steven did de-commit from Georgia but he has not committed anywhere else right now,” Fred Zepeda, the defensive backs coach at the College of Sequoias junior college, told the AJC.

“He took a long time to think about everything before he made this decision (to de-commit). I’m just supporting Steven with whatever he does. I told him to go ahead and take his trip to Houston on Dec. 14. He will probably wait until sometime over his …
