The 5-foot-9, 160-pound cornerback will lead Sandy Creek High School against Ridgeland for the Class AAAA state championship at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Georgia Dome.

Wiggins has been committed to UGA for nearly a year and is still being heavily pursued by other colleges. Next month, Wiggins is scheduled to take official visits to South Carolina, Florida, Ole Miss and Texas A&M. The Gamecocks are considered UGA’s biggest competitor.

“Yes, I’m still committed to Georgia but I’m looking at other opportunities,” Wiggins told the AJC. “This is a real hard decision for me. It has become real hard for me right now. I really don’t know who to believe. I’m just going through the process slowly.”

Do you know about any juniors playing Georgia high school football that project to be D1 prospects?

Georgia’s RisingSeniors.com Bowl is looking for a few good men for its Dec. 30 all-star game.

The RisingSeniors.com Bowl is a recruiting showcase that features many of the state’s top junior football players each year. Around 60 of 90 roster spots have already been reserved, with the remaining 30 to be filled over the next few weeks.

The RisingSeniors.com Bowl is only in its second year, but has quickly passed national all-star games such the Under Armour All-America game and U.S. Army All-American Bowl with its importance toward recruiting. Why is that? The Under Armour and U.S. Army game features seniors which have either finished the recruiting process (by committing to a school) or are close to it. Recruiting is over.

Meanwhile, RisingSeniors.com features only juniors …

How does UGA’s 0-2 start affect football recruiting?

The Bulldogs have 14 players committed to sign football scholarships with the team in February, along with four high school juniors pledged the sign with UGA the following year.

Many of Georgia’s commitments made unofficial visits to Georgia for Saturday’s 45-42 loss to South Carolina, including 5-star offensive lineman John Theus of Jacksonville and Thomson High School defensive tackle John John Atkins (UGA’s most recent commit). As far as junior prospects, Camden County QB Brice Ramsey, Newnan safety Tray Matthews, and Goose Creek (S.C) wide receiver Tramal Terry – both early commitments to UGA — were among those in …

UGA hasn’t given up with its recruiting of Josh Dawson, one of Georgia’s top college football prospects.

The 6-foot-4, 227-pound defensive end from Tucker High School made the surprising decision to commit early to Vanderbilt. In June, Dawson picked Vanderbilt over Georgia, Notre Dame and South Carolina, among his 23 early scholarship offers.

It hasn’t discouraged Georgia. Dawson said UGA mailed him a written scholarship offer earlier this month, and that he stays in touch with Bulldogs recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner on a regular basis.

“Right now, I’m committed to Vanderbilt, but I’m still taking offers and listening to what people have to say,” Dawson told the AJC. “I just know my final decision will be in February. That’s when everything matters.”

Dawson said he will likely take only two official visits – to Vanderbilt and UGA. “I might go to …

Alabama and Georgia Tech are the frontrunners for Henry County defensive end Dalvin Tomlinson, who is a candidate to be Georgia’s No. 1 overall college football prospect for 2012.

The 6-foot-3, 255-pounder is an AJC Super 11 selection and has around 20+ early scholarship offers, with Florida, Clemson and Indiana filling out the rest of his top five. Tomlinson, who is a two-time state champion in wrestling, has a 3.8 GPA.

“Dalvin is relentless,” Henry County coach Mike Rozier said. “He is at full tilt every play, and looks like he never takes a play off. He goes both ways for us and his motor is always running. The college scouts always talk about that when they watch his film. You just don’t see many high school kids that are relentless and have a motor like him.”

Tomlinson made a recruiting trip to Alabama on Saturday and nearly committed.

Georgia’s No. 1 college prospect at quarterback, Greyson Lambert, made his college decision over the weekend, with Virginia narrowly edging out Alabama in an intense recruiting battle.

The 6-foot-6, 195-pounder from Wayne County High School was also being recruited by Arkansas, LSU, Tennessee, Florida State, Florida, South Carolina and Clemson, among others, over the last year and he camped at many of his favorites in July.

“Yes, Virginia and Alabama, those were my two favorite schools,” Lambert told the AJC. “I just felt like the whole situation at Virginia is better for me. It was really tough to pick between those two. I was born in Alabama, and I have family still there. But I was just blown away by everything Virginia had to offer. It’s kind of weird saying that, when you’re talking about a school like Alabama right there. I don’t know, I just had a different …

Nephew of Olympian Gail Devers commits to play football at Virginia

Buford DB CJ Moore is the nephew of three-time Olympic gold medalist Gail Devers

Buford DB CJ Moore is the nephew of three-time Olympic gold medalist Gail Devers

Speed is a family tradition with CJ Moore, who committed to play football at Virginia.

Moore, a lightning-fast cornerback from Buford High School, committed to Virginia over offers from Rice, Memphis, Air Force and Navy. Moore’s mother, Monica Phillips, ran track at UCLA, and his aunt, Gail Devers, won three Olympic gold medals in sprinting events.

“We’ve definitely got some speed in the family.” Moore told the AJC with a laugh. “We really don’t talk about it because it’s just natural. It just seems like everybody in my family either ran track, coached track or had something to do with track.”

The 5-foot-9, 155-pound Moore will be following the same sports path as his father, who did both football and track at Cal State Northridge.

The younger Moore has already established himself as one of Georgia’s fastest college prospects for 2012, winning the Class AA state championship in the 100 meters in …

QB Greyson Lambert on mend, will visit Alabama, Florida, FSU and South Carolina

Wayne County QB Greyson Lambert has nine offers, and may add a few more in July

Wayne County QB Greyson Lambert has nine offers, and may add a few more in July

Georgia’s No. 1 college football prospect at quarterback, Greyson Lambert, is nearly fully recovered from a leg injury that sidelined him for three months and is sprinting through schools on the recruiting trail.

Lambert made unofficial visits to South Carolina and N.C. State last weekend. He plans to make recruiting trips to Alabama, South Carolina, Florida, FSU — and maybe a few other schools — in July.

The 6-foot-6, 195-pounder from Wayne County High School said he has nine early offers: Alabama, South Carolina, Miami, N.C. State, Virginia, Louisville, Purdue, Boston College and Mississippi State. He also had early offers from UGA and Clemson which are no longer available (see below).

Nearly every elite quarterback commits before his senior season, but Lambert is unsure.

“That all kind of got pushed back with the whole leg thing; With not being able to visit many schools in June, I might wait …

LB-DE Josh Dawson commits to Vanderbilt over Notre Dame, UGA, others

Vanderbilt is raiding the state of Georgia for college football prospects.

Josh Dawson, a 6-foot-4, 226-pounder from Tucker High School, picked Vanderbilt among his 23 football scholarship offers, which also included Notre Dame, Boston College, South Florida, and UGA. He will play defensive end or outside linebacker in college.

Vanderbilt has seven commitments for its 2012 recruiting class, including six from Georgia.

“I felt like Vanderbilt wanted me more than any other school that offered me or recruited me,” Dawson told the AJC. “It felt like a family there. All the coaches and players have the same  mindset. They want to win SEC championships and the whole BCS championship. That put Vandy over the top with me.”

Who is generating all the excitement among Georgia recruits and generating the high expectations for Vanderbilt? It’s none other than James Franklin, the first-year coach at Vanderbilt.

“Coach …
